- The Simpsons are iconic, right? One could even consider them 'immortal,' having established their legendary footprint all the way back in 1989. Over the decades of weekly television, across which The Simpsons have produced more than 700 episodes, the legacy has grown exponentially. From TV to film, from action figures to t-shirts, from posters to video games, there's no stopping The Simpsons. Of those video games, though, not all were created equal. Titles like Road Rage or Hit And Run have stood the test of time, where others like Simpsons Skateboarding have... not. And with as low down as Skateboarding is, it doesn't hold a candle to Simpsons Wrestling.
Simpsons Wrestling may very well be the worst wrestling game ever made, and it's about time we give it the full Triangle X Squared O deep dive, retrospective treatment. I remember as a kid, going to EB Games (that's how friggin' old I am!) and seeing this game. Being a huge Simpsons fan I begged my mom to get it...she said no and I got Mega Man X4 instead.
I think I made the right choice.
Also, for the record, a Seinfeld chess game would rule.

OSW might be worth a watch Ian since you were a WCW boi and not born when they start their tracking of the big Hogan WWF run. Their WCW episodes are pretty awesome as well, that might trigger some nostalgia for ya. Y'all have similar Don't Give A Fuck comedic styles except they are Irish and a trio,whereas you just kick ass solo.
They are massive Simpsons marks as well so that may be why the original commentor made that comparison as well.

Oh no. Not this game. This is a picture perfect example of greediness and the executives not caring for a single second of quality. I feel bad for the developers of this game as I don’t think they’re too happy on making this piece of shit game. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts in a few hours.

You know, despite the title being "Simpsons Wrestling", never once did I ever consider that you'd make a video about it for Triangle X Squared Circle. I mean, you fairly pointed out that besides taking place in a ring and featuring the barest of win-by-pin mechanics, there's nothing tying this to 'wrestling'. Also, the fact we got crap like this when the arcade Simpsons game was sitting right there without a home port is just...there aren't words.
This game is in my collection, but I have never played it. A co-worker bought it back in 2001 and was unable to return it since he had only learned it was crap the old-fashioned way (opening it and playing it). Since he knew I had a PlayStation, he gave it to me, told me it was terrible, but he didn't want it in his house. So I added it to my PS1 library and it's just been sitting there for twenty years. Oh well, at least it's keeping it out of someone else's hands. :)

I own this game and break it out on the variety streams every now and again just to show people how bad it is. I like the show and appreciate the positives you mentioned, but yeah, it's rough. I'm excited to see you do Saturday Night Slammasters, as I used to rent that one a good bit and remember enjoying it.

Switching the art style is an interesting thing, I have only seen it work with character skins or something. One of the TMNT games had a thing where you could switch the in-game sprites to old school comic looking, Playmates-inspired in-game models. Batman in his animated look was super fun in Arkham City. But that’s ONE character, not the whole game haha.
Great video, man. Makes me wonder if this would have gone over better if this came out during the Simpsons’ peak, but then again Bart vs the Space Mutants wasn’t good either so who knows.

Michael John Hedden, you're probably one of very few people who actually loved this game. Maybe it's because you grew up watching The Simpsons when you were young, so you probably own Hit and Run, Road Rage and even "The Simpsons" Skateboarding as well.

@@MikeyyRetro I had been cursed on Hit and Run since 2009. I literally completed 99% of the game and only had to complete the last mission. I turn off the game because of curfue. I play it the next day, and for some f'd up reason, I lost all my game progress, even though I SAVED MY FRICKING GAME THE FRICKING NIGHT BEFORE!!!!

It's funny you dropped this video today. I just played this again a few days ago. This game makes me sad. They should have just given us a crappy Simpsons arcade. Luckily for me we have an original Simpsons arcade cabinet at our local mall. The Marge joy stick doesn't work it's so old.

Ok so what I always heard was that this game was never meant to be a wrestling game but was licensed to be a generic story based Simpsons game but due to the popularity of wrestling that all changed.
The studio wanted to make bank on the wrestling boom and the developers who were angry over the concept change just rushed this garbage into production and called it a day.
Is that true? I don’t know but it always made sense to me so I believed it.
Not in any research that I did, no.
Here's some information I gathered on The Simpsons Wrestling and why it turned out so poor. One of the former level designers from Big Ape Studios revealed some mindblowing information on his website.
-Supposedly there were problems with the license holder about attacking other people other than the AI. I think he was probably implying that a Tag Team Mode was planned but cut due to production problems.
-The original dialogue written by the writers of the show to use for the characters was originally more vulgar but was dropped completely.
-An arena called "Springfield Elementary" was cut due to the Columbine Massacre.
-The producer hadn't a clue what to do with the game and left during mid development. The team had to work on it themselves.
-He believed that the team shouldn't have called the game Simpsons Wrestling due to feedback from wrestling fans.
-The frame rate was ruined due to design choices with the characters.
-The character select screen was originally going to be 3D and allowed you to hit the ai and swear at them but this was cut very early on. Someone found all the cut voice lines in the games files. There is E3 2000 footage of this on RUclips.
-He enjoyed working on the game and saw this as a massive building block for working on games in the future. He is aware of the games legacy.
Very cool stuff, brudda. Very interesting. Amazing how some of this stuff happens.

Comparing other, actual wrestling titles that were out or released when this turd dropped into the toilet bowl. The lack of story mode. The lack of, I dunno, wrestling? So can I name something Scott Gorske’s Monster Truck Racing and it be a game of fucking hop scotch but, oh, it takes place in a monster truck arena! The fuck. I never thought I would ever say or agree with someone that made the statement you made but backstage assault was a god damn masterpiece in comparison.
No lie though, I am now morbidly curious about a Seinfeld Chess. 😂

Haha, what a punch in the d**k this game turned out to be. The premise sounds outstanding, like it would be impossible to be f**k up... I played once and it was like instantly going from childhood to being an adult. F**king game stole my innocence. Almost ended up sitting in some dive bar trying to drink away the pain. The 3 moves u mentioned in the beginning aren't the only ones u can do..
When you're jumping on opponents head, you can press triangle and circle and square as well for different attacks, if u do circle u jump and knock your opponent down,
also when you grab you can do the same thing.. triangle is a character special grab, square is to throw them. circle is to slam them onto the ground
Same with using the ring ropes to bounce yourself into your opponent, u can use square, triangle and circle to combo it just after u bounce.
Another thing
The developers were excited to make this game but the main director of the game quit midway through and the rest of the people were left to scrap the game to the end
that is why the character screen, the main menu screen and cutscenes are bad
If u're wandering how I know, well I know someone that talked to a person that worked on the game.
Another thing, u can play as smithers and the alien guy by entering cheat codes, as well as the cat and mouse from the show (which u can also get by completing all of the modes)
There is a story mode actually, it's in the manual for the game

The only Simpson's game I've ever played was hit and run on GameCube. I never knew about this game or any of the other games the Simpson's made so this is all news to me 😅 thanks for sharing

I'm a Simpsons fan myself but the Simpsons wrestling did not age well. There was no Treehouse of Horror levels or anything that had to do with Treehouse of Horror at all in that game so on my scale of great game to asinine and atrocious ripoff I would give it an asinine rating because why would they do a wrestling game that's based on The Simpsons without putting actual wrestling like Greco-Roman wrestling pro wrestling Japanese pro wrestling or hell even Deathmatch wrestling? I used to have the PS1 version of that game and it is fucking horrible I prefer The Simpsons Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror for the Gameboy Color over this freaking atrocious asinine and stupid game

I remember popping this in at my buddies house for shits and giggles when we were in high school. We got through about 30 seconds of a “match” before immediately turning it off and laughing our asses off. We then proceeded to play Mario Kart and No Mercy for the rest of the evening.

I once rented a Harlem globetrotters video game from the local video game store. What I pressed didn't matter. I replaced it with double dribble. Still sucked, but much better.

Dude half of Dexter sucks. It was my favorite show at one point, S4 is the peak... And then it's never the same. Season 7 was the closest they got to a comeback, and then Season 8 was so horribly hilarious that I had to turn it off in like the second episode. It got THAT bad. Such a shame, too.

I am such a hardcore Star Wars fan, that I liked Phntom Manace on PC. I had a Pentium 199 since 1997 till 2005, so this Phantom Menace was lagging really bad with controls delay and graphics freezing. But I still managed to beat it and to enjoy in the process))))

Other shows come and go, but Vikings stood with me since beginning. While, I agree, some shows just tells a story and that’s it, or others have a strong start then fails misserably, Vikings got better and better with each season, and my lord, all the deaths and scenes had actual meanings, not just throwaways to catch the viewers offguard

This game was so sadly disappointing for me. I think I saw it at a relative's house once when I was a kid and for around 15 years I thought I must have dreamt it because I never heard or saw anything about the Simpsons fighting game again. When I finally re-discovered it, I didn't mind if it was bad, what made me sad is that it's not really interesting at all. I spent all those years wondering how the game really was, and for an awful game, it could at least have been somewhat fun, but it wasn't.
If only it had been fun at all, right? RIGHT?!

a simulation style (albeit simplistic) would have served the game more. Our generation's knowledge of the characters are incredibly common and I'd love a Simpsons version of Wrestlemania 2000.

@@616Entertainment I just realized that I wasn’t thinking of Saturday Night Slam Masters (I literally just remembered that it is kinda a spin-off to Final Fight and was an awesome rental on the weekends with 2 player action.). I am thinking of a completely different SNES Wrestling Game. It is any of the WWF or WCW ones & it isn’t Fire Pro or any of the Super Famicom exclusive ones. It’s on the tip of my brain. I can see the logo in my head right now, (frustrated).

I really hate to say this but, the best parts about Hit and Run are the story, unlockables and interactivity. The gameplay itself is repetitive and every chance to actually use your punches and kicks is optional. Seriously! Every single mission is a literal race against time and the last one is impossible to beat because the countdown is way too fast.
You be careful with talking down on Hit And Run, man. Hahahahhaahha. Nah you're probably right, though. I haven't played it in 18 years.
At least the music in the game is pretty good.

Well, the South Park kart racer game did happen so...Yeah. The Simpsons Wrestling came out on March, 23rd 2001. In about 9-days WrestleMania X-7 is about to go down while this pointless game is out in stores, what a weird fact.
thank god i never actually played this as a child i heard about it somewhere online back in 2001 we had web tv remember that thing went online on your tv kinda a precursor to how we do it now in todays world with the advances technology and faster internet anyway i heard about it i was like WOW SIMPSON'S WRESTLING I GET TO PLAY AS FAMOUS CHARACTERS FROM MY FAVORITE SHOW and i see stuff online years later and you could not believe my relief when i saw what i almost could of had gotten if i did not see the game with my own eyes and yeah i really dodged a bullet thank god i smartly got to experience no mercy nwo revenge and all those releases on the N64 i even think legends of wrestling 2 is better than this dig crap and it was atleast something different not the best game but was a nice introduction for me to older legends i knew less about of course hogan and andre and some guys i actually were more familiar with but it was pretty decent for what it was

It might seem shorter, and in episode number it is, but the first three episodes of this show, I covered 2 games a piece. So even though it's been five episodes, we've already covered 8 games. And in episodes 6, it'll be 9 games now, which is right near the amount from season one! And yea, this is going to allow me to focus big time on The History Of Halloween, which will pay off.

lol I didn't even rent this one. A friend of mine had bought a copy of the game for full retail price and I was (un)lucky enough to play it with him for free. I don't think we played for more than 10 minutes before switching to Digimon Rumble Arena.
Dude Digimon Rumble Arena is worth a nice little penny these days.

After watching this video something tells me you don't like this game LOL.. Seriously tho, I grew up watching The Simpsons back in the 90s. I loved playing The Simpsons Arcade game. I even have it on the Xbox 360... Somewhere at the beginning of the 2000's I fell out of love for The Simpsons. I am legit surprised it's still going especially with today's "cancel culture" bs. Anyways, this game didn't look appealing so I avoided it lol
Weirdly, The Simpsons and I have the same age, I was born in 1989, and The Simpsons debut in 1989. I wish that this "cancel culture" on social media from both sides of the spectrum just goes away and take some chill pills to relax and enjoy life.
That's when the vast majority fell out of love with the show. You can research the size of the audience they've had and lost over the years, it's really crazy. The downturn began in the early 2000s. Not just you, I assure you.
