  • These days, video games based on pro wrestling are, for the most part, going for a simulation style. The WWE 2K series is the biggest in the industry and it's trying its hardest to recreate what you see on television every Monday and Thursday. And that's fine! They (for the most part) do a pretty good job with what they're trying to accomplish. But it wasn't always like this. We used to have games like WWE All Stars, where over the top, cartoonish versions of our favorite current and classic WWE Superstars would fly 30 feet in the air when executing a maneuver. Before that, we had WWE WrestleMania XIX, with a story mode that's... Oh man, we'll jump into that somewhere down the line.
The point is this... Before any of those titles hit stores shelves, we had 1995's WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game. You may have come across this one in an actual video arcade, or maybe you owned one of the home console ports. The fact of the matter is this: WrestleMania: The Arcade Game walked so that games like All Stars and Battlegrounds could run. Let's dive into this one for our SEASON 2 PREMIERE of Triangle X Squared O: The Wrestling Game Retrospective Series. Enjoy it!

Wrestlemania the arcade game? You can not imagine how much i played it back in the days. Again and again and again. Although there weren't a lot of game modes to play. Although there were "only" six/eight wrestlers playable. I still got it today and still play it from time to time on my super nintendo. I love it. I don't know what it was that fascinated me there. Maybe the sounds or maybe the crazy moves or maybe the graphics (they looked pretty damn cool in the 90's) maybe the commentary or maybe all togother.

Dude, “Batman” Sega Genesis OST in the background is A+. Always loved that soundtrack.
The digitized graphics were always pretty cool to me. It definitely made everything stand out visually, and the behind-the-scenes process was really interesting to see. Plus having those sprites made it possible to mod games, like the video going around featuring Razor Ramon in Mortal Kombat. A crossover I didn’t know I needed.
The special moves were always crazy. That fighting game, arcade-style influence was something I never got into.

I will never forget seeing the first Mortal Kombat game in an arcade for the first time, right when it came out. I’m 37 now, so you do the math. There was ALWAYS a crowd around the game. The other thing that I always remember is when NFL Blitz first came out, and thinking it was hilarious that sometimes the announcer would say “Holy $hit!” when you tackled someone really late. Sure they bleeped out the swear word, but it was still funnier than hell.

This reminded me of how much I miss games like WM:A, NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, MLB Slugfest, Red Card 20-03, NBA Street, and SSX. I have never like sports games, but when they are purposely over the top, they are a blast.
Especially SSX. I never thought I'd dig a snowboarding game, but it wound up being one of the 4 launch titles I bought with the system (along with Armored Core 2, Evergrace, and SFEx3). To this day, SSX Tricky remains one of my favorite games in PS2's library. Hell, how about doing to look at the SSX series on the channel?
