This Is the episode where it gets clear the TV show Is not about a restaurant, but it Is about grief and how everybody struggles with it. The yelling Is the pain creeping around them.
All stories (unless they are just spectacle) are about the characters. Everything else is setting and situation.
I'm so happy they got Jon Bernthal to play Michael. Such a great actor and he became great friends with Ebon who plays Richie when they were both on the Punisher show together in season 1.

I think Richie's thing is that he's lost without Michael. he just lost his best friend and is also going through a divorce, so he feels like his life is falling apart and he's trying to hold on to the one thing that actually still makes sense to him: The Beef. I've never lost my best friend that way but I can imagine it'd be a pretty f*cking difficult thing to move on from. everyone in that family is suffering from intense grief and this show does an excellent job portraying that. btw, I'm from Philly and we just call it soda 😄
I love how well Steven is vibing with the show. Pay close attention to the camera work in the next episode. It won awards.
H/t to random Reddit commenter, but the opening scene is a microcosm of the show and the restaurant: Mikey starts working on the braciole/ restaurant, but is too chaotic, distracted (maybe drugged up) to finish. Richie is hanging about, drafting off Mikey's charisma. Sugar kinda does/ kinda doesn't want to be involved, but is cut out anyway. And Carmy drops in once Mikey stops working, and finishes the braciole.
Jon Bernthal is such a perfect choice to play Michael. Just like the character, he is one of the most charming and charismatic guys on the planet.
Love this episode and how it heavily focused on Richie trying to deal with the changes happening all around him after losing his best friend, Michael. It really adds more to his character. Also loved how Tina started to come around to Sydney and defended her by confronting Richie about how he’s been acting. Very good character development on her part. Thanks for your lovely reactions ❤️
Jon Bernthal slays every role given to him!! He has a total run time of 4 minutes or so, but made that great impact. THAT MAN IS SO UNDERRATED! His smile made me cry in the end

@@passwordprotectedd Syd had already resolved the situation peacefully, and it pissed him off that she went over his head when he planned to deal with it aggressively. The whole reason he blew up on her inside is because she took care of it while he was running around like a maniac trying to find his gun. There's no evidence that there was a problem with the dudes hanging around outside after Syd got things calmed down, but he just called the cops on them anyway out of spite over everything. That was my read on it. Just to be clear, I'm aware of Richie's character development, but I don't think he's turned the corner yet at the end of this episode.
@@dtgstl3148 (SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE SHOW) I see what u mean and understand that take which is a good interpretation, but I personally don’t agree with it. Here’s mine: At the start of the ep we see Richie still telling the same old stories that clearly parallel Michael 's story telling, basically a release of grief, trying to relive those glory days. It's Richie’s cathartic release, a way to handle the grief he holds. Nothing is going right with him, he isn’t successful in dating, Tiff thinks of him as bad news, the kitchen is changing, all sorts of bars and restaurants are closing around him, etc. I think his act of calling the cops on the “gang” is a way of control, but not in a way to get back at Syd, but a way to control the change in his life. We know how many places are closing around them ( this will come up more in future eps as well), and I think Richie knows that Crooked John and his crew will eventually have to leave, or they will become a disturbance to The Beef, thereby putting them at even more of a risk of closing. Syd’s solution is good, but it’s not sustainable. Getting rid of Crooked John and his crew would be another change in Richie’s life that he would not be able to handle, so I believe he takes matters in his own hands this time, accepting that change is inevitable and protecting the restaurant.
I also think John Mayer’s ‘Last Train Home’ adds more evidence to this interpretation. We know in 2x1 that Richie talks about purpose and how he believes he will get left behind one day as he holds no relevant skills. LTH parallels this by discussing time, age, and family. I believe Richie by this point is realzing he’s getting older and needs to accept change or he will be left behind at his “old” age. This is a way of him accepting that and starting to make change.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the ep starts with Richie still in a state of grief by telling a date he just met old stories that parallel Mikey, to ending with him removing an entity that he otherwise would have a hard time dealing with as it’s reminiscent of the “old days.”
I also don't think Richie's talk of purpose in 2x1 would make much sense without this interpation. It would be jarring if Richie was not starting to accept things around him such as his grief and change and all of a sudden he goes to talking about purpose and people leaving him behind. It seems like a natural progression to me to go from grieving heavily -> not accepting change -> talk to Tina -> takes small control of change -> season finale -> 2x1 discussion about purpose.
here's a great comment from Reddit that I agree with as well and adds to my points: ": if you give in once, you become a mark/easy target. When the guy bossed Sydney around to give them sodas and she grudgingly agreed, my first instinct was “oh no” which is reflected when Richie at the end says how she thinks she can handle the neighborhood and she has no clue how things work. I get what Sydney was trying to do but bribing certain ppl only creates greed which leads to blackmail or violence. They’re just sandwiches so probably not, but if it was me or my friend, I would’ve said fuck no. If you give an inch…..
Obviously I could be wrong. That’s just my view point and possibly where Richie’s train of thought was going. He probably did the right thing by nipping it in the bud"

Hey Nikki and Steven at this episode did you realize that we had a little Punisher reunion with John Bernthal as Michael and cousin Ebon Moss-Bachrach who played Micro in The Punisher.
I've been driving myself crazy trying to remember where I had seen Richie's actor before and it just finally popped into my head that he had played President John Quincy Adams in the miniseries "John Adams". Loved that series so much!!
He played micro in the Netflix punisher series… with John Bernal! Haha those two are a great pairing
He's been in a bunch of stuff - he was in The Punisher, he was on HBO's Girls...
Ebon won an Emmy for his performance as Richie this season, and he will likely win it again for S2. Jeremy Allen White (Carmy) and Ayo Edebiri (Syd) also won well-deserved Emmys for their performances, and the show is probably going to clean up again at this year's Emmys.
He was also great in Andor and NOS4A2 - both great shows
It's honestly so sad, seeing how Richie behaves in this first flashback. He doesn't act any particularly differently, but you can just TELL that he was in a much happier place in that scene. Like even though they were best friends, you almost get the sense that Richie was like another younger brother, hanging on to Mikey's every word and just eager to contribute or hype him up. It makes it even more obvious how devastated and broken Richie really is now, especially since it seems like he watched Mikey's downfall happen right in front of him
I have never seen Jon Bernthal in anything I did NOT like. One of my favorite actors of all time. I first saw him when he was a regular on a short lived TV series called "The Class".
Minnesota we call it pop except when I travel I try to call it soda but occasionally I slip up calling it pop when ordering a drink then I get a weird look
Down south we call sodas "cokes". Typical southern conversation about beverages:
"I'll have a coke." "What kind you want?" "Mountain Dew."

I'm from Michigan, and I'm more likely to say 'pop', but I use 'pop' and 'soda' interchangeably. No one's gonna misunderstand you either way so it's pretty much a toss up. Also, I absolutely love Tina's realizations this episode and confronting Richie here. He's obviously in mourning, but it won't help to hold on so tight to old systems that can't be maintained, because, yes, it was a delicate ecosystem but Mikey's gone and Mikey was part of that ecosystem. He has to adjust, but it's so hard to do that. I love watching these characters move through this.
Chicago is "pop" country. The one didn't term that threw me was "jagoff." I thought that was specifically Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While it originated in Pittsburgh, apparently the one other place that uses it extensively is … Chicago.

Just watched y'all's Alien, and the Thing reaction and it was great. It took me back to my childhood and how I loved these types of movies. It is hard to find movies of that type of horror today. Now if you haven't seen The Fly another 80's horror classic your in for a good one.

I live in Michigan, born and raised. I've lived lots of places they call it several different things. I am in pop country, but I hate that word, so I call it soda. I have since I was a teenager and I always will.

I think Nikki said it so well. Richie thrives in chaos bc he’s use to things being chaotic. He knows how to handle chaos but he doesn’t know how to handle change. This calmness and order that Carmy is bringing in is hard for Richie to understand.

Haha pop, that's funny! I'm in Boston, Salem actually & my family, Italian always called it tonic. Most of the time, it's soda for me lol I know everyone grieves in they're own way but Richie was getting on my last nerve by this point. I've seen the both seasons twice by now & still I don't have positive feelings about Richie until next season ep7 Forks. Some people fear change & some people embrace it.

It was after he and Tina’s conversation that he realized that thibgs can’t always stay the same and that those guys hanging around was just bad for business.

Richie is early-S1-Tina, but even more extreme. He's unable to move on from the past, clinging on to what could have been. Michael was chaos, but in the best way possible (at least to Richie), keeping things chaotic is like keeping the memory of Michael alive. Richie is telling Michaels stories, because Michael can't anymore. That is how he grieves, but the wound isn't closing, because everything else is hurting just as much.
I was actually surprised that he didn't snap at Tina when she called him out. An equally interesting and important choice by the writers.
The end is him calling the cops, when he explicitely told the guy on the corner he wouldn't. I think the subtext is that they head those issues in the past and they always turned a blind eye and ignored both the dealings on the street corner and how that impacted business. Richie knows that the impact is bad and that it likely won't stop being bad. Him calling the cops is a little step of letting the past go and making an effort -> He wants to be/feel better. Babysteps and all that...
