Lived in singapore for 5 years, you need to try the local food much more. You’re not going to have a good experience based off going to the most touristy spots in the centre of the city. This is like judging London based off going to Soho and Hyde Park, rip-offs as well
Appreciate the comment and info. Where would you advise we check out next time? We had 4 nights, so a fair few places we ate at that I didn't include. We did have a Nandos as we haven't had one in 4 months :) Soho and Hyde Park are insane... but you've gotta admit Singapore is crazy from a price perspective...
Also, on the food front I am severely allergic to nuts so I have to be really careful on where I eat. I really wanted to try some of the places in Chinatown, but there was an array of Satay on the menu :)
@@gazwrighttravel ah damn, the nut allergy is definitely a big one! You have to head to a local hawker centre, Singapores culture is 100% based around food. Lau pa sat is good even though its in the centre but I would recommend going to Maxwell Food Centre. Even better the beers will cost you only a max of 10 SGD per pint! The food will be around 5 SGD and this is how you live as a local. I would also recommend the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which is a UNESCO site and filled with residents rather than Gardens by the Bay which is overrated imo. I will list foods you have to try (barring nut allergies):
Chicken Rice
Bak Kut Teh
Chili Crab/black pepper crab
Roti canai
Nasi Goreng
And honestly so many more!
When I lived in Malaysia and visited Singapore I didn’t like it, but it really grows on you when you live there and the lifestyle there is easy, so I understand your frustrations
@@gazwrighttravel if you go to any hawkers centre (groups of small restaurants locals eat at) you can get exceptionally good meals for less than 5 pounds. Singapore is known for its cheap very good quality food and you went to nandos?? :P
@@gazwrighttravel Go to steamov at beach road, haidilao if you into their special dance, fortune center for vegetarian chinese food.
@@gazwrighttravel Satay is definitely a no if you have allergy to peanut. The sauce is made from peanut.
what were you expecting from the most expensive hotel in the city? cocktails in London's posh bars also cost 30 quid. Unless you're saying that's somehow acceptable for London, but unacceptable in Singapore because of ... what exactly? I'm curious, just because it's Southeast Asia you think you should be able to live like a king for cheap?
@@vicho8762 London is also super expensive. I definitely agree with you on that 😄 why would it be cheap because it’s SE Asia - who said that as I didn’t?
I knew it was going to be super expensive. I just share my journey and experience with people, so they can get a glimpse and taste of what it’s like.
I’ll be back at some point to give it a 2nd chance and get a different feel for the city/ country. Where else should we go to eat/ drink? 🤝

SG is one of the most expensive city in the world. Only public transport is cheap.
SG is clean, safe and efficient. Almost zero corruption. That is all she can offer
@@steventay5834 yeah I can 100% agree with the safety and cleanliness 🤝
Singaporean here. Born here in 1962. So I am literally a dinosaur now. Is Singapore expensive - heck, yes - cars (US$100,000 for a basic Japanese car, US$400,000 for a small apartment, etc). But how did we survive? Basically, I work very very hard and I save save save. We cook our meals at home or eat at hawker centres. You can get a decent meal for US$3 and if you throw in a coffee, it is another US$1. A fish and chip meal in the hawker is about US$7. It is really affordable. I was in Iceland a few years ago. Fish and chip in a cafe cost US25 and if you go to a restaurant (which i did), it became US$40. So in summary, you can have a really enjoyable holiday here on the cheap and forget about those hotels' cocktails - it is simply not worth visiting. Please visit Singapore again and visit the hawkers - I highly recommend Chinatown Complex and Maxwell. If you venture out, you can try Zion Road Hawker (at Great World City MRT). You won't be disappointed.
@@ragsoh Hey, thanks for the message and all the info. I really appreciate it. We went to the food centre in Chinatown and it looked amazing. I couldn’t eat there as I am severely allergic to nuts/ peanuts and there was lots of satay. It’s 100% where you can save abit of money and have some really tasty food (from what I saw).
Yeah I went to iceland last year and it’s crazy isn’t it. What were your favourite things your did in Iceland?
@@gazwrighttravel I am a pescatarian (I only eat seafood). Maybe a safe bet would be chicken rice and noodles for you. And fish dishes like fish soup, fried fish are generally nut free. May I suggest you use Google translate to ask the hawkers if their food has nuts in them. For Iceland, my favourite thing was driving around the amazing country. The food was very expensive but it was a trip of a lifetime - so i just splurged.
@@ragsoh thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. If satay sauce (peanuts) is on the menu I usually avoid it in case there is cross contamination.

Where is the beat country you have travelled to?
Singapore’s safety, cleanliness and convenience is tops in South East Asia. 99% of facilities and services work, standards and expectations vary. Easy if one speaks and reads English.
Food variety is probably one of its best features, very easy to take it for granted.
That’s about it. For those who love the heat and humidity, good for you.
Born Sporean but never been a patriot. Hate the typical Sporean culture. Overly pragmatic and linear in mindset. Too mainstream and you’ll stand out if your orientation and lifestyle is different.
(I’m not referring to one’s sexual preferences or fashion sense)
Yes after you’ve seen every man made thang specifically designed to impress the tourist, you’ll be meh after that. Unless, you’ve never been to Asia. So SG is like Asia-light.
Did you know, the Singapore Sling is only drunk by foreigners (especially white ones). Just ask the average Sporean on the street and chances are, 9/10 have never tried it. Possibly 5/10 even know about it.
Last words: expensive and boring but easy to take the comforts and convenience for granted.
Hey - thank you for taking the time to comment and sharing some insight! Super interesting on the Singapore Sling comments and I 100% agree on the safety and cleanliness. Singapore is top of the list for that and I understand your point that this can sometimes go unnoticed. Have a great week. Thanks, Gaz

Key Operative word here “Budget Traveller”
But your destination includes Raffles Hotel, Gardens by the Bay, Haji Lanes etc, essentially all the tourist traps.
Then in the very same vein you complain about how expensive it is… duh! Of course it is expensive!
If you truly want to educate about budget travelling, why don’t you share about the hidden gems such as Tiong Bahru Market with famous foods such as the Wonton Mee. Jian Bo Shui Kieh. Maxwell Food Centre with that Tian Tian chicken rice or Adam Road Food Center with its Nasi Lemak. The list goes on and on.
Please do your research, stop complaining about how expensive it is when you walk into a 5-Star hotel and expect a $1.2 kopi.
At the very least, be logical in your assertion.

@@gazwrighttravel10-15 years ago, you might be right.
But in this day and age, the answers you seek are literally just 5min. Google Maps offer all these eateries that I mention. It even tells you how affordable it is with that $$ icons. And even, you don’t know about Google (which I highly doubt it), you can always ask Chat GPT. It’s all the rage these days.
My point is, do alittle research. Just 5 min on your computer would give you plenty of information.
Read through the comments section, if it is just 1 or 2 person telling you that your narrative is flawed or you have poor research, maybe it is bias.
But if consistently you are hearing the same narrative from people who have lived here for decades. It would be foolish to insist that you are right.
Is Singapores more expensive as compared to the likes of Malaysia and Thailand and all other South East Asian countries. Yes.
But is as expensive as you described it to me. No. I would disagree with your characterisation. It is incredibly bias.
Here, you can get a full meal at a food court for a noodle dish between $4-5 depending on what you order. You can get coffee that cost $1.7. Here you can take your family of four out for dinner for just $25-40. And the fare would be pretty decent. A chicken dish, egg fish and a vegetable dish with 4 bowls of rice.
Compare that to Myanmar and with its exchange rates, of course it is exorbitant. Compare that to say Australia or UK, I highly doubt you can cover a full family meal at just $40. That is more like the price for 2 person only and it’s a one dish meal.
If you want to create content to help travellers as you put it in your video, have the decency to do some rudimentary research.
I think that is a very fair ask.
@@gazwrighttravel It is really easy to do some research. Google Maps offers a plethora of so-called "Hidden Gems" if you simply type in hawker food. You even know the food's affordability with the $$ sigh in there. Or you can CHATGPT this; it is all the rage these days.
I never said $1.2 beer. I said, $1.2 Kopi (Coffee). Here in Singapore, you can get a very decent Noodle Dish eating out for just $4-5 bucks, depending on what you order. I knew Singapore would be expensive before I came. Hence why I didn't say it would be similar to other SEA countries. Not sure how you got that vibe :) I live near London and have travelled to NYC and Scandanavian countries - I am well versed in 'expensive countries', but I thought Singapore was on another level.
I do appreciate the feedback people have given that we only went to the super touristy place. But it was my first time in Singapore and we are tourists so wanted to go to the most popular places.
I'm not sure how many of my videos you watched but I am severely allergic to all nuts, but mainly peanuts so I have to be really careful what and where I eat. Where would you recommend we eat next time that is more budget friendly? :)
@@gazwrighttravelhello first of all i commend you on such a friendly reply (though i apologise if mine sound hostile). You can find plenty of affordable and budget friendly food that doesn't make sense using the usage of peanut ingredients. These are abundant in street stalls and hawkers. I like both Hong Kong and Singapore, but Hong Kong feels more down-to-earth. Singapore is like many modern cities in Southeast and East Asia, but it's cleaner. In Hong Kong, you can also go mountain hiking and visit nearby outlying islands to enjoy seafood.
I really want to go to Hong Kong. It’s on the list 🏄🏻♂️ Singapore is super clean, but in my head I thought it would be similar to Japan / S.Korea. I couldn’t believe the drinks prices haha
What would you recommend doing in Hong Kong?
@@gazwrighttravel In Hong Kong, you absolutely have to try all the delicious food. If you significantly lower your expectations for hotel room sizes and the quality of service from restaurant staff, you'll have a great time. Remember to follow these unwritten rules in small Hong Kong restaurants: be prepared to share a table with strangers. Don't call the staff over until you know what you want to order. Order quickly and accurately, as they don't have time for small talk. Finish your meal promptly so the restaurant can turn over the table. Hong Kong is serious about business and making a living. Don't forget to visit Macau as well; Macau is worth the trip and has a distinct Portuguese vibe. The Londoner Casino in Macau often offers good accommodation discounts.😊
Hong Kong and Singapore are both lovely places. HK has more grit, more "personality" if you will. Singapore is a bit more sterile. If i was in my 20s again I'd chose HK. If i were raising a family I'd choose Singapore.

Hey - really you taking the time to watch and comment on my video. Every country has positives and negatives in my mine - we all like different things and that makes us human. I think its because I had such high expectations of Singapore. The two huge positives are the cleanliness and safety, which most countries around the world do not have. Japan is my favourite country ever! Where is the best place you have visited?
You can try out food like hokkien prawn mee, hainanese chicken rice. Katong laksa ,bbq fish. One suggestion 79 Circuit Rd, #01-28 Hawker Centre, Singapore. 370079. It will definitely cost lesser than going to a restaurant. Its normal to feel that costing in singapore is high. The living standards has always been high. More than 90% of Singapore's food supply is imported, with only about 1% of Singapore's land set aside for agricultural use. But there are hawkers selling food that taste good and are more cheaper than having at a restaurant. Its normal for a person to not like a country. Different people has different views .
