      It wasn't about "brains". Vic is the surreal genius who, like Milligan, injected fresh ideas into the act. Mortimer is the funny guy who makes us laugh.
      We need both for the magic to work.

      Well he doesn't think so. He worked for the council on infestations. Vic Reeves was a bit of fun which became his escape.

    Years later we realise that Bob's the guy you'd love to have a few pints and a laugh with. His phone in's as "Keith" to the Iain Lee radio show are legendary - and somewhere here on RUclips. Well worth a listen. Very "Pete Cook" as a concept. Nothing like Pete Cook in practice.

    Vic was always 'look at me, I'm ever-so wacky' whereas Bob was always happy to sit back and have a laugh with a bit of nonsense.

      i get the impression that for a long time, jim could never be jim. because he was so shy, he maybe found it easier to be vic reeves, and so be over eccentric and appear a bit uptight, rather than just let himself relax and be himself. who knows, though?

    Wossy is actually responsible for getting them discovered and was an advocate for them to both the BBC and Channel 4. He’s a really good friend of them both and was the one who saw the live show and thought it would work on TV. Don’t like him but he’s a good egg and a great spotter of talent.

      I discovered that program a few weeks ago and binge watched the lot. Bob is hilarious and vulnerable at the same time. Paul is very funny too.

    Thank you for this massive catalog of old television recordings. I myself had a similar archive, alas, I was unable to retain any my VHS tapes. Great stuff!

      We invested in a DVD recorder very early, and saved the vast majority 12/15 years ago... Then dumped the rest! Glad you're enjoying, and lots more to come when I have time :)

    It’s really absurd and ridiculous, there are not many who can do it well like Vic and bob, that’s why they are the very best at what they do, brilliant! I really loved shooting stars, insanity like that is what we all need

    Bless Jim, he just wasn't built for interviews and tv hosts just weren't built to deal with him, he's a Dada-ist, an obsurdist, his eye is drawn to deconstruction, you can't expect conventional conversation and it would be a bad move to try mirroring his humour. I've never seen an interview that wasn't awkward

    I dont know how many times I or my young sons "fell" like bob in our home to the amusment of alll of us, my wife thought we were crackers but that just made it funnier

      Maybe as it was definitely still Reeves' Big Night Out, and Bob was seen as just the side man. But then Woss was always a bit of a nob.

    I definitely prefer Johnathan Ross now, he seems a bit passive aggressive here, and i think he was maybe a bit jealous of Vic Reeves; Vic was quite good looking and had lots of energy.

    Bob gives Vic his full dues in his autobiography. Vic has an infectiously irrepressible nature that helped Bob (crappy word?) unleash his complementary comic potential (pseud time over).

    Don't understand the hate for Jonathan Ross. I think he's a nice bloke and has been a great interviewer for decades.
    Not all interviews can go smoothly and perfectly :)

    I think Ross saw Vic n Bob in their very first amature shows in Depford, and gave them their big break. In fact i think Big Night Out was a Ross production, so its strange that he's so shitty with them. I think he (Ross) is a bit intimidated by them. I think the audience are a bit clueless too which doesnt help.

    It is a terrible interview though Ross was friends with both of them, I think he found it difficult to make their comedy work with his own limited abilities. I mean did he really think they were going to open up about their families etc on TV? It's Vic and Bob!

    When I first saw Big Night Out, I thought indignantly what the hell is this!? But it must have worked on my comedy subconscious because when it was repeated I laughed, quite literally, like a drain.

    I do agree Jonathan Ross is a bad interviewer, never been my cup of tea.
    But he was instrumental in them getting BNO commissioned. He's a real supporter of theirs.
    And it's not a Vic vs Bob because Gone Fishing is so wonderful. They're both legends, why the duo is so fab!

    This show on reflection was utter garabage. I thought comedy was weak now, it was rank on channel 4 for years.
