This is a really good game if you get into it. There are more than 80 different outcomes, depending on your parenting skills, with a downright absurd amount of content. (Also, Gainax are famous as one of the most influential anime studios of the 90s.)
I think that I played this last whilst living in Ireland, albeit maybe the Windows version. This is also when I discovered some, uh... Adult visual novels too, although at the same time, though despite that, a bunch of them actually were quite good! Of course, those games can't really be shown on here or Twitch!
Wasn't this one of them? I remember it having some sexual content, though it was treated as the "bad path"; maybe there was a censored version I guess.
@@zeriel9148 I'm not entirely sure... I didn't get too far into it as I recall, though I think that the info might be readily available online to check?
This is more stressful than real life; the kid, with the work qualifications of a kid, needs to earn enough to feed herself, doesn't get payed for days she messes up even, AND has to pay for the schooling and healthcare out of pocket too, omg! ^^ The game looks honestly great, both in mechanics and presentation, I'm so glad you reviewed it!
A fascinating entry to be sure, both for the game itself (it has 74 different endings depending on how your daughter was raised!) and the circumstances surrounding the DOS port's development and cancellation. SoftEgg's website is still up, and they go into detail explaining why it was canned (it essentially boiled down to DOS becoming a far less appealing platform for publishers with the arrival of Windows 95 and the sudden bankruptcies of certain licensors). I only became aware of this game's existence about a year ago while perusing eXoDOS (my initial impressions were very similar to yours), but the Princess Maker series was apparently quite popular in Japan and South Korea back in the day. It seems like Princess Maker 2 is considered to be the best of the bunch by fans, boasting a dizzying number of ports and re-releases, including one that's supposed to come out later this year! There's also a spiritual successor called Volcano Princess made by Chinese developer Egg Hatcher, with the general reception being quite positive despite a somewhat dodgy English translation. Yeah, the body measurements are a bit off-putting (they apparently influence certain career paths and endings), though I suppose it can be partially chalked up to cultural differences and being a product of its time. There are some other problematic elements and moments usually involving the daughter being sexualized in some way or having outdated sexist expectations of her (to be fair, it IS a medieval fantasy setting), but fortunately these are few and far between and can usually be avoided. There were also a few instances of nudity in the original version of the game, but I believe they were censored for several of the ports, including this one. Definitely a game worth checking out! Shame this version was never officially released, but at least we still get to play it!
This gave me some flashbacks as I completely forgot about this game. I played it many years ago and decided to pick up the Steam version. I ended up sinking 20 hours into it over a weekend...so to say its addictive is an understatement! I will say the DOS version is superior to the refine version on Steam in nearly every way, as I think the OPL2 soundtrack is better and I would even go as far to say I prefer the pixelated graphics on the DOS version. Oddly this fan translation also makes way more sense than the official one! The refine translation almost seems like they just ran all dialog through Google translate and never had a native English speaker even proof read it. There are some questionable scenes in the game just so you know. Most notably, If any of the bandit leaders defeat you in combat they will SA you. Nothing explicit is shown but it's heavily implied. Personally, I don't feel they needed to include that in this type of game but it is there....
07:36 Obviously the Underworld is either another dimension or another planet with knowledge of teleportation, spacecraft, interdimensional travel or some combination of the above. And ditto for the Heavens. The big question is are the Underworld and Heaven the same place or two separate locations that just happen o be allied.

Glad you’re back. Waking up to a random, usually new to me, DOS game has become part of my morning routine. 🌞
I always loved this game. It has an amazing soundtrack and a lot of soul. There's an HD version on Steam with updated assets.

I would never play this but it was amusing watching you get into it.

Wow Lawnie. I didn't think you to be the Salary Man and Parental type. ;D Your time off has really had an affect... XD
Man this game is super complex, all the Princess maker games are! Maybe not the best to go in blind

I hate anime, but this game actually hooked me. It is great.
