Random DOS Game Show #1019: Indianapolis 500: The Simulation (1989)
A landmark racing title by David Kaemmer and his Papyrus Design Group, Indianapolis 500 dubbed itself as a simulation because it codified and transformed the racing genre from an arcade experience to one of sophisticated physics and vehicle mechanics. The race engine is absolutely ludicrous for its time, feeling years ahead of the competition. Alternatively, you could race around the famous Indianapolis 500 with invincibility on, causing absolute mayhem in an arcade-style fashion. Lawnie chooses the latter, but spends some time detailing just what made this game so incredible and why it's still fun to whirr around the track today.

Random DOS Game Show #1018: Gemstones III (1994)
Просмотров 2117 часов назад
A solid but largely unremarkable shareware breakout clone that has one exceedingly different feature that's instantly recognisable. Lawnie leaves the guesswork to his esteemed subscribers as he bats a ball about and feels increasingly unnerved as the game progresses.

Lawnie returns to one of his favourite soundfonts from S. Christian Collins, and is suitably impressed by the genuine improvements made to GeneralUser! Random DOS Game Show #1017: From Corner to Corner (1992)
Просмотров 2299 часов назад
The meaning of the game is to transport all nine balls at the disposal of one of the parties to the opposite corner. Each side alternately makes a move, during which it is allowed to move the chip in a straight line or diagonally, or if one of the neighboring cells is busy and the next one is free, jump onto it. Moreover, this can be done more than once if, after the jump, another chip appears ...
Random DOS Game Show #1016: Grand Prix Circuit (1988)
Просмотров 73419 часов назад
A Distinctive Software classic Formula One racing game published by Accolade! Racing around in EGA goodness with PC Speaker blaring at you has never been so fun! Lawnie takes to the track and smashes through the time limit, acquiting himself acceptably on the level above beginner, before declaring this game a must-play for all eighties racing fans!
Random DOS Game Show #1015: Runaway (1990)
Просмотров 15821 час назад
A falling letters game where you have to type the corresponding letters on the keyboard before they fall to the bottom. It's just as thrilling as it sounds. Lawnie types some letters, and then tells everyone to play a different typing game instead.
Random DOS Game Show #1014: Barney Hunter (1997)
Просмотров 112День назад
A shooting gallery game where you shoot Barney the Dinosaur. You're given the choice of four weapons, each with their own 'hiscore' chart. Lawnie, a veteran of Purple Dinosaur Massacre and Barneysplat, dutifully shoots at the purple dinosaur.
Random DOS Game Show #1013: Balance (1993)
Просмотров 144День назад
A tricky German balance game that earns its name! Balance a ball across a series of voxel-based levels by tipping it with your mouse. Yes, this is as tricky and frustrating as it sounds! Lawnie has terrible balance and is awful at puzzle games, so this goes about as well as expected.
Random DOS Game Show #1012: Munch Guy (1991)
Просмотров 11614 дней назад
In this unique game, you navigate a maze full of harmful ghosts and try to eat dots. Suffering from either terrible cycles issues or ham-fisted programming, Lawnie fails to derive much enjoyment from this. Oh well, they can't all be winners!
Random DOS Game Show #1011: Chuckie Egg (1989)
Просмотров 17314 дней назад
Famous Spectrum platformer Chuckie Egg apparently got a random DOS port in the latter part of the decade. Lawnie leaps around platforms and climbs ladders in an attempt to capture eggs from chickens. Not the best port in the world, but adequately captures the arcade-like fun of the original.
Random DOS Game Show #1010: Lemonade Stand (1999)
Просмотров 13314 дней назад
When life gives you lemons... Or in this case, when life gives you a DOS port of a game twenty years after it was originally released! A largely text-based business management sim all about running a lemonade stand. Pick the prices for production, account for important variables like climate, and rake in that sweet profit! This DOS version is a little janky, but it's an Apple II classic for a r...
Random DOS Game Show #1009: Rubic (1989)
Просмотров 13014 дней назад
Ever wanted to play a Lithuanian DOS game about a certain cube puzzle? No? Well Lawnie spends a few minutes running through the multitudinous options of Rubic, before finally settling down and changing the cube. A game that does exactly what it intended to do! For that it should be commended.
Random DOS Game Show #1008: Duff (1996)
Просмотров 14121 день назад
A smooth and simple Boulder Dash clone. Unfortunately Lawnie doesn't have his gaming socks on this morning, so he plays abysmally. Nothing particularly bad or good about this shareware title, and it does what it sets out to do.
Random DOS Game Show #1007: Turbo (1987)
Просмотров 28821 день назад
An avoid-'em'-up car game that has you shifting gears and weaving through traffic in order to beat a time trial. A very tired Lawnie is less than enthused by this, despite its relatively smooth handling.
Random DOS Game Show #1006: Devil Land (1994)
Просмотров 31321 день назад
Little (small) Giovanni is a devil who leaps about in a side scrolling platformer. Well, at least the music is nice. Lawnie is distinctly unenthused.

I played this a lot back in the day. On an old laptop, the LCD display gave an extra impression of speed. Never had sound that great, though. Reversing and knocking everyone out was one of the first things I did, too. Then went on to tinkering with the car. The stock March/Cosworth is the slowest but easiest to drive (the high drag is an indication), though the main reason everyone passed you in training is probably because you drove with a full fuel tank. In qualifying, you drop as much fuel as possible and also do some other optimizations. The wheel temperature is important - if your wheels get hotter e.g. on the outside, you need to adjust their tilt. I got good enough that I could finish top 3 in qualifying and usually lead the race for a bit. But eventually I always crashed into a wall or a car while lapping it.

I was just thinking about Indy 500 after your review about Grand Prix! I remember getting this game as a pack-in with my first Sound Blaster along with a copy of Lemmings. I'm not long after commenting on the other game, so this is a pleasant surprise! I think that I played it between 1989-90, though at the time, I thought it was an Indiana Jones game originally! I think that this works on an 8088 CPU, so I can play it on the 808x mini laptops, and it definitely will be getting installed along with Rogue, Indiana Jones 3, Wolfenstein 3D (via a source port), and Lemmings... Although I think that using my Pocket 386 would be better able to emulate my experience back then, seeing as I see 386 CPUs as faster 286s or slower 486s! I coincidentally see 286s as faster x86 808xs and slower 386s, which is why I'd never be interested in one typically. The x86 808xs are interesting to due to being able to do stuff that 286s can't, whereas I got a 386 so I could have a portable Win3.11 machine, plus I wanted to have something I can test ISA cards with! Anyway, moving away from my semi-digression, I totally get why people rate this so highly!

The 200 laps thing kinda reminds me of Le Mans, in that it's probably endurance related! Coincidentally, I have a steering wheel, pedals, and shifter set that I picked up cheap at auction, a PXN one, so not Logitech or Thrustmaster, but at least it's a good starter set!

I clicked on this video because I recognised the image in the thumbnail. There's a bit more lore behind, or adjacent, to this game. I'm originally from South-Eastern Europe, Romania to be exact, and in Romanian the game looked a bit different and was called "Bilutze", basically meaning "Little Balls". This was a super popular game in the region thanks to ye olde pirating ways - I have an entire podcast episode talking about that - however it had no color-coded corners, and instead the board was limited to the square connect-4 type grid. This version of the game is called Color Lines and you can find it as such 😉

  • @sentrysapper45
    @sentrysapper45 2 дня назад

Man, talk about experimental with the choice of music! It sounds like it's been randomly generated. The ball physics appears to be rather simplistic compared to other Breakout games, as the player doesn't seem to be able to influence the angle that it bounces. It's a bit odd that it notifies you of your Top Ten status after every ball as well instead of waiting for the game to be over.

  • @StormkeeperPU

    • @StormkeeperPU

It sucks that ID has basically decided to abandon this game. Literally every console known to man has an official DOOM port, yet Wolfenstein only has a PS3/Xbox 360 port and that's literally it. The PC version is literally not even optimized for modern platforms, which blows my mind. How can such an influential game get such a poor treatment by its creators? T.G.F.M.
