@@D14MBK From day 1 Eren and Mikasa was positioned as the pairing (person A and person B) from the beginning the show is telling you Mikasa loves Eren and Eren in his own way loves Mikasa. And then suddenly at the end Person A ends up with Person C. Use that little brain of yours and think critically as to why that is a stupid plot twist. Eren ends up with Historia a woman who he had mostly interacted with for an arc and a half. Two people who have acted nothing but platonically with each other suddenly end up together for no reason whatsoever. Eren had more chemistry with Pieck in that scene in the tower then he ever had with Historia. So get your head out of OP’s ass.

Okay one of the few things I was disappointed in the first part is when Paradis was destroyed, not because I thought it was a bad decision, but simply because that would mean the end for Historia. And I felt like it was a bad decision because it felt like a bad way to end her character. Off screen and only by an implication. So thank you for surprisingly being able to have your cake and eat it. EDIT: Just got done with the video and WOW you ate a lot of cakes
The whole Eren / Historia pairing completely fell of. They didnt had (Narratively) to be together. AOT isnt a romance, neither of these "Ships" should've happened.

That's an incredibly flaccid argument and I can only imagine how much worse our stories would be if they never fleshed out their elements or added dimensions to their characters like romance or comedy because of "genre restrictions".
Given how this was almost all original, I had no idea what to expect coming off the first part. And I will say I am not disappointed at all. You did some really, really ballsy things with this part and it was seriously something else. The themes’ implementations were genuinely fascinating and I like how you included ANR theory while still keeping things original. I also love how you didn’t leave a single character in the dust. You tied every character’s arcs together and even kept giving Eren character development after leaning more towards the villain angle with him. You didn’t leave anyone behind, and that’s exactly what I think the story needed. Watching this entire rewrite was 4-ish hours well-spent.

You had lost me with the ending to part 1 "How could this man make a compelling ending in a setting where the world is already destroyed?" And somehow you managed to make it great, with in character arcs where they were either anemic or non existent before and clever use of previously established events Truly your best rewrite so far

That shi’ was ass. Eren should NOT live, that’s his ultimate consequence for being a genocidal. That kid is narratively a plot device, and Eren / Historia shouldn’t be a thing.

I had no previous interest in it nor did I know basically anything about any of the plots of characters. Through the way you told this story though I became so deeply invested in everything, it made me feel like I was watching an ending to a show I had an emotional investment in and it was so good. It's pretty close to a line in the series. When Eren hugs Ymir in the Paths and shows he's truly on her side. "You're not a slave! And you're not a god! You're just a person! You don't have to bow to anyone! You can decide! It's your choice! You get to choose!"
@@DaisyFarm_ You should definitely watch AOT, despite it being an anime it doesn't fall into many of the mistakes that I find make anime so insufferable, and I would even say it's one of the greatest series ever made. Until this video came out I quit recommending it to people (so they wouldn't have to experience the betrayal of the original ending's abysmal writing), but just using this as a headcanon I feel makes up for it. Even with the sheer amount of spoilers in this video there's still so, so much more to the show that happened earlier in the series that I think people deserve seeing. Just a random fun reason story-aside would be experiencing the (at least imo) greatest soundtrack the genius Hiroyuki Sawano made, which in my opinion is one of the only real flaws with this video trying to be a new ending (AOT is only AOT when I hear that beautiful German singing and the Sawano Drop). TLDR: you should watch AOT, you won't regret it :)

I think my only real criticism of Part 1 & 2 is the dialogue, which is quite rough, in my opinion. That said, I imagine the reason for that is little more than this being a rewrite, if it were official in any capacity, some revisions and edits would no doubt be in order. All that aside, like I said, the dialogue is my only criticism. Even as someone who is far from hating the official ending and appreciates what it does well, and what it does poor, more than the average "hater" (I hate this word, but there's little better right now), this rewrite is fantastic. Well done.
I also don't really hate the current ending (note that I only saw the show version of it not the manga) What it did need is a LOT more time to breathe. In FMAB the final battle and "ending" was a majority of the final season iirc, and that show had a perfect ending. Wrapped everything up in such a cathartic way. This rewrite would easily constitute another whole season because it also wraps everything up much more thoroughly.
@@AveragePearEnjoyer I'd say it's also pretty similar to Breaking Bad which did something similar. When shows get so big and filled with moving gears and plotpoints, like AOT, FMA, and to a potentially lesser extent Breaking Bad, I don't think there's any way to finish them besides making a whole season of closing epilogue.
I just think snk did character arcs too explicitly, ie with characters saying out loud what they're thinking to key people involved with what they're thinking so they can resolve it together. The other person shouldn't actually be there for those moments of self realisation especially when they're not a partner or friend who's been trying to shake them out of it, but the FOCUS of their complex. Those are the least likely people to lead you to self awareness on it imo. Do regression arcs that way sure but growth arcs should happen through quiet moments after having run ins with the target of their mental complex.
@@siginotmylastname3969 I would agree with this, but mostly for the ending, not much else, if I'm being honest. I do agree that some characters often exposited how they felt, but to me it always came off as a natural thing to do when they did it. The ending changed this for me, minus one character that if I begin to praise even a little bit, people will ignore all that I have to say. Regardless, I can only somewhat agree, scenes in which a character is expositing how they feel to another character, such as Eren and Zeke talking in Marley, or Erwin and Levi talking in Shiganshina, or even Armin and Zeke talking in the paths (even if it was rushed and a bit too convenient), are all moments where I think the presence of a second character make the scene work better. That's just me, though. I suppose, I think of two characters as people, and people talk to other people, especially if they trust them, and they share the pain they're dealing with. To me, it seems natural, but I understand if it doesn't to you and others.
I agree, but I think that is just the way of speaking that differs a lot, especially since this is a japanese media being changed by an american in a very informal setting so the dialogue's nuances get lost, but of course in a real setting there are editors that take the dialogue and make it more natural and more coherent.

Honestly I've headconned this ending into my brain over the original and it's made rewatching the show so much more satisfying knowing how they resolved here in the rewrite. I was able to rewatch Season 4 Part 1 without thinking everything to do with the Hizuru roylaty stuff was a waste, among so many other little character arcs and thread that weren't given a satisfying resolution in the original.
For all of my favourite stories, there's always at least one defining moment that really resonates and hits me, often a line of dialogue that strikes me and makes me well up. This rewrite has two. "I'm not killing billions. I'm choosing not to take a single innocent life more." This line deserves so much more than being in a RUclips video. To me, this encapsulates the breaking of the cycle of violence so much more than the test of whether you can make peace with Eren (though of course that was a really good and important part of the rewrite.) I adore how this version of the story puts weight on a single life more than once, starting with the cliff baby being saved. The alliance here fought and died and at the end of it all, they only saved a single life, and this story seems to depict that as a victory. Because of course it's a victory. The weight of _any_ life is immeasurable and infinitely precious, yes they could have saved more if they were faster, but they did save _someone,_ someone who would have died if they were even a second slower. Despite everything, they made that difference, and they won. It's a very unusual way of writing the value of life, but if anything, it sells the value way more by placing such weight upon each single life without devaluing the weight of billions, and it's captured very well in this single line. The second moment is cheating a little because it builds off of everything I just said and caps it all off perfectly, but it does so very well so I have to mention it. Of course, it's the final words of Eren in the story. But, while "you are finally free" has all the weight of what I've already said, I do want to bring attention to my favourite part. And yeah, it's also Eren's mother's words, but it gets a lot of really well done context here whether or not it was intentional. "Just look how cute she is." Of all the parts, this bit actually made me genuinely tear up a bit. I think it's because, for all of the ideals and philosophy of the infinite value of life and the breaking of the cycle of violence, of love and connection that was baked into this rewrite, I think this line hits me so very hard because none of it is in this line. For all the dialogue between characters, the weighing of options, the debates on whether to end the cycle of violence, fighting for freedoms, fighting for love and connection, of the value of a single life, it melts away right here. And it does so at a perfect moment with Historia pulling Eren back from placing arbitrary significance onto his child because, as was said, it _shouldn't_ matter. The point of all of the above is that _every_ life matters, not because they're the reincarnation of a special figure or anything, but because they just do. The lack of requirement on what makes these lives valuable is what makes that value infinite. Having all the philosophy melt away and just having Eren love his child without any of it in this moment is, ironically, what makes all the philosophy correct, because that value is there with or without the philosophy. It's beyond being put into a definable box. It's infinite. So yeah, I really like this rewrite. Enough to make me want to write my own short 500 word micro-essay on its final themes separate from the source material. Thank you for making my day, sincerely.

Also in the video the titans power technically did go away its now dragons, But i can see why you wouldn't like it to be changed and instead removed but i think its nice that it gives mikasa an important role specifically on her family heritage (Even tho it contradicts that the founding titans powers don't work on minority bloodlines) But im pretty sure it got retconned or changed in the original. Personally i like this ending cause it finishes the main themes and lets eldia be freed from the sins of the father and also titan curse, Not the curse of love that was in the original ending. 30:55 BRO. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you for having this level of humility. I posted on the last video as well but this attitude you have is something I wish more writers did when it comes to how they approach adaptations. So many people do not comprehend how insanely difficult it is to build stories from scratch. It requires so much time to let the free association of ideas to coalesce into a coherent story that follows the tenants of "THEREFORE, BUT, BECAUSE." Like any machine, you can't just swap individual parts in and out willy nilly since redesigning one gear means other parts have to move and it can start with wanting to change one little detail and ends with redesigning the whole engine from scratch. What you're doing is effectively what Isayama's editor did with the difference being you are putting more of your own creative input into the final product rather than just prodding Isayama with questions to stimulate the creative process. It still takes a tremendous amount of creativity and effort to do re-writes and reorganize those component parts into something functional at this scale, but recognizing that you are standing on the shoulders of -giants- TITANS to achieve the heights of this re-write is likely WHY it turned out so well. You successfully avoid the Hollywood Screenwriter ego trap of thinking "Feh, surely *I*, hollywood writer man, can write better than [insert internationally popular multi-million dollar franchise]! Time to CHANGE EVERYTHING! And also insert some giant mechanical spiders maybe."

You absolutely cooked. I really hated any parallels between Mikasa and Ymir but making Mikasa the next Ymir makes so much sense. I was also skeptical of the direction you took with Eren last part but you wrapped it up perfectly here. Historia and Ymir's last scene with him is absolutely beautiful and is probably the best "last panel" rewrite I've heard of. Also surprised that you went with Jeanpieck instead of Jeankasa. But it strangely makes sense to me too.
Yeah I never really thought much of jeankada, more of just a teenage crush on his end. I think Mikasa becoming the princess of hizuru and wedding a Hizuru-ese (idk) to get closer to her heritage is a really good way to hammer home Mikasa becoming her own person separate from Eren, breaking Ymir's cycle of servitude.
Because Mikasa was not a parallel to Ymir. She is the antitheses to her (and Eren is the antitheses to Fritz in terms of view of freedom). Mikasa's love for Eren is what gave her strength for all those years - "Eren, as long as I have you, I can do anything" ep1x6 Ymir's "love" for the King did the opposite, keeping her subdued without any will of her own. Mikasa killed Eren - despite her love for him, but also BECAUSE of her love for him. She was strong enough to let go of his life in order to free him from his dream. It's the ultimate example of how her love for him gave her agency and strength. This makes Ymir realise that her love for Fritz was doing the opposite, and that her children should have instead been the focus of her love. (Hence her imagining letting Fritz die by the spear, and hugging her daughters)

I wholeheartedly understand what it is like to rewrite, as I've worked on a project similar, and I appreciate your upfrontness with how you feel. The fact you do such a good job working with the source material as much as possible while adding some origional ideas that fit so well is what makes this for me. This is a cut above other rewrite that just feel like fan fiction and actually feels like its supposed to be the ending.
1:42:45 There's one more thing very critical to understanding that this was a retcon - the baby's eyelashes and eyebrows were drawn specifically how Isayama draws baby girls. Throughout the manga we're shown quite a few baby boys and baby girls, and there's been one defining trait with them all - the baby girls have long lashes, and the baby boys don't. Right here we're seeing a man holding a baby girl, meaning this COULD NOT have been Grisha holding Eren.
@@WingsOfRequiem That's basically a retcon. Isayama released the final panel of the show, said "this is the final panel to AOT" and that's it. So sure, it wasn't officially canonized in any volume of the series, but getting into semantics like that doesn't change anything and doesn't change that he officially released it to the public as the final panel to the story.

And I did say that sure, you could point out it isn't officially a retcon as per the word-for-word definition, but being a stick in the mud for terminology literally does not change anything. Isayama said "Here is the final panel!", showed a panel of a man holding a baby girl saying "you are free", and then when the ending came out that panel was a semi-random flashback not at the end, of a man instead holding a baby boy, which the context of is somewhat strange as Uniquenameosaurus pointed out. Definition-wise, sure you're right, but practicality-wise a retcon is the most fitting way to describe it by far.
@@AL-kc1nb Yeah, Isayama changed the final panel, (still not a retcon, just a change but whatever) Also, the context is only strange if you dont really get it. This occurs after the scene where Eren says he doesnt know why he had this deep feeling to wipe it all away. But the panel explains that Eren has always been who he was since the day he was born, and the concept of freedom is drilled into him to the point where his longing for it becomes a big part of his identity and keeps him moving forward.

@@mikelbaningo6407 kinda random but OK. I'm with Uniq with this one: why is the conclusion to some epic fantasy settings "The magic is gone, its just like the RealWorld™ now!" I find it more compelling from a writing perspective to deal with the problem of the "magic" causes when mixed with humans. Deleting it is lazy. That be like if a story about our world concluded by: " And then all weapons ceased to function, forever." or "And then, it was impossible to add additional greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere." or "And then, resources appeared out of thin air as you require them" Solving the problem by removing its medium is uninteresting. As to the happy ending: cry about it I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The writer needs to have the stakes mean something. If nothing changes, was it ever worth the effort? If they got a storybook ending I think it would have been less interesting then if their actions had tangible consequences. If that's not your flavour that's fine too! Seek other types of stories that have the types of endings you like!
I've been watching your other videos (Puss In Boots) rewrite and I want to say thank you for making these types of videos, especially for Attack on Titan which was a big part of my life.
Bro, I actually got giddy when Mikasa got this new unexpected role, and when you brought up the twist about the mythological dragon to boot. At the end of part 1 I couldn't imagine how the rest would need its entire own video, but yeah, now I see why. The twists and developments just kept coming as the hype train had no brakes! But question: Why did Mikasa arrive in Paths with only one blade? And if only that one got yeeted away, wouldn't her other blade still be stuck in herself? (Also does each living Eldian now have a piece of metal stuck in their throat?) Also glad to hear you're making progress on your insomnia and depression! Remember, just like every scout sacrifice brought our protagonists closer to the truth, so does every bad day give you a pointer to how to achieve the good ones.
I spose it doesn't really matter much since it doesn't affect anything, so I'm not sure if I thought about this and then didn't include it, or just never thought about it. Regardless, the blade would have had to be still in her neck during the fight in paths, or she'd have to remove it on her arrival. But the blade would have definitely come with her, I just don't mention it. Also technically yes, every eldian has a very minute piece of blade inside them just as the spinal fluid was split among all eldians, which at first you think, "but there's like 10 eldians left alive, so it'd be a bigger chunk right?" But there's still all the collosals for it to go to as well.

Finally, an ending with reasons that Ymir isnt the only to know. I can finally completly move on from AoT now. Thank you Unique, what a man you are. I will not forget this rewrite for 10 years at least.

Goddamn, Reiner's arc and the ending callback with Ymir/Carla was fucking amazing. I also really loved imagining a lot of the action setpieces you came up with. I'm not crazy about everything. On first run through, Mikasa's explanation of alternate timelines was practically incomprehensible, but that might just be a me thing that goes away if I go back over it a few times. Armin's development throughout this whole thing seemed kind of scatterbrained, but wtf do I know. Ultimately, it doesn't quite reach the level of "omg this is the real ending" but in particular, that resolution is going to follow me into my dreams tonight. Anyways, thanks bro. I really liked your rewrites for Endgame and Star Wars and a couple other things you put out. I idly decided to check out your channel a couple days and discovered part 1, which earned you a subscriber so that I don't miss the next time you put something out.
Hi Unique, First of all, just wanted to thank you for the amazing work you’ve done one these two videos. You have such a singular approach to the way you look at fiction that it always feels as if I have left with a fresh insight on the subject I would have never consider otherwise. While I was initially lukewarm when you began doing rewrites, watching you refined your theories over the years has been highly informative and immensely helpful - with this latest foray being by far your best to date. I loved all the unpredictable ways you got the story to twist and turn (I’m an absolute sucker for narrative that veer into unexpected directions) whilst managing to maintain a strong sense of momentum throughout. While some story beats were stronger than others (we’ll get to that later), the plot managed to overall feel like an organic extension of the world and characters - with the two major plot twists you devised (Ymir’s betrayal and Mikasa stealing her powers) being major standouts. If I had to critique anything about the rewrite, it would be that it highlights a major blind spot in your theory on character depth. While you rightly assert that beliefs, passions and sensitivities do a much better job at creating depth than individual character traits by themselves, I would argue that solely equating depth with these things is somewhat reductive. Rather, I believe that what gives a character depth are how the individual components of their personality interact with one another - specifically those that juxtapose with the traits that are the most visible to us. To use a concrete example, Guts from Berserk is initially presented to us as a violent, brutish and seemingly callous force of nature, primarily driven by his desire for revenge. However as we come to know Guts better, we see that - beneath his aloof, coarse manner - he is also a socially awkward individual prone to moments of intense introspection and possessing a deceptive capacity for remorse, kindness and restraint. It isn’t any of these traits by themselves that gives Guts depth, but rather how they interconnect to create layers to his personality beyond what we can initially ascertain. In this context, what a character’s passions, beliefs and sensitivities do is reveal aspects of their personality which we not be able to so easily discern otherwise. In Game of Thrones for example, while Ned Stark is no fool by any means, his resolute sense of honour in the face of deep-seated political intrigue reveals to us a dangerous naivety that ultimately proves to be his undoing when it is exploited by the far less scrupulous members of the court. How all this applies to the rewrite is that there are occasional moments where the emotional logic used to justify the characters’ decisions either doesn’t quite gel together and leaves it feeling somewhat contrived, or presents the characters in a manner that unintentionally undercuts them - a good example being how aspects of Eren’s post-rumbling arc were handled. While the idea of Eren becoming a “reverse Thanos” was an undeniably inspired one - taking his character to its logical extreme - the speed with which Eren transitions from reluctant monster to complete acceptance didn’t quite click for me, as it felt like it needed more time to percolate after losing the one thing that had allowed him to rationalize his actions until to this point (protecting Eldia). Instead, I feel like this development would have been better served if it had come in the aftermath of Connie’s death - acting as a point-of-no-return for Eren and forcing him to accept just how far he’s willing to go to remain free. Likewise, the emotional logic underpinning Eren’s drive to remain free felt vague and loosely-defined, as the place from where this drive is coming from is never truly made clear. Is it from an inability to back down - the angry, impulsive tenacity of his youth brought to a monstrous, tragic extreme? Or is it from the selfish desires of someone who would seek to prolong his life by any means necessary - never truly caring about anyone besides himself? The rewrite kinda hovers between these two throughout the climax - something which severely undercuts Eren’s character in the immediate aftermath of the battle, as his attempts to talk Armin out of killing him unintentionally push the scales in the latter direction and ultimately paint Eren as a selfish coward rather than the tragic anti-villain I suspect you were aiming for. That isn’t say however that what you’ve done with Eren isn’t a huge improvement on the original source however. Like many others, I was disappointed by the lacklustre direction his character ultimately took and while the rewrite fumbles some of the granular elements of his arc, it does a stellar job of putting Eren on a compelling trajectory that feels entirely unique to him and the world he inhabits. Apologies for how long this wound up being. Hopefully there is something in all this that is of value to you. As I said earlier, this is your best rewrite to date and I look forward to seeing the insights you’ve managed to ascertain from this venture. Keep up the amazing work :D
Didn't the rewrite say that Eren killing Connie was the point-of-no-return for Eren? The whole reason Eren was able to accept who he is was because of the situation at hand. Hange was the reluctant kill, but it was her death that made the killing of Connie easy, while adding to the fact that his friends were trying to kill him. At no point in the rewrite, in the anime, or in the manga, Eren attacked first. His friends attacked first, albeit to live if they wanted to destroy the founding titan power. So him just easily killing his friends is an easy transition. The question of, "Is it from an inability to back down - the angry, impulsive tenacity of his youth brought to a monstrous, tragic extreme? Or is it from the selfish desires of someone who would seek to prolong his life by any means necessary - never truly caring about anyone besides himself?" was answered in Part 1 of the rewrite. It was the chant of 'If you fight you win, if you lose you die.' The rewrite was blatant in it's reveal, but vague enough to not dangle it in front of your face. The exchange with Armin was less about making Eren a coward and more about wondering if Armin, who by his nature is kind and is now taking on the role of a vengeful character, would choose to act or make the hard choice to keep peace. It would be different if Eren begged, but he didn't. Armin asked him a reason why he shouldn't kill him, and Eren told him why.
@@jordanlang5172 Took some time to think over your response. You are correct in that Unique highlights what these actions are supposed to develop Eren's character. My argument is that, while there is nothing wrong with the arc itself, there is room for improvement in regards to how it was executed in the rewrite. Furthermore, I argue that where the execution falters can be traced to one of Unique's long-standing theories on character writing in which a character's depth is equated with their beliefs, sensitivities etc. The problem with this theory is that - in taking an approach in which a characters emotions are logically dictated by their situation - you overlook all the little nuances that make humans tick. In the case of Hange and Connie, there is a world of difference between an act of violence done in the heat of the moment and one that has been coldly premeditated. While the idea that - under the right circumstances - Eren could transition between killing one of his friends out of desperation and killing another in cold blood is a logically sound one, the speed in which the rewrite has Eren work through his emotional turmoil at a speed that undermines the sheer weight Unique tells us Eren's transformation is meant to have. The reason why I proposed Connie's death as a "point of no return" is that it works better at bridging the gap between the Eren who killed Hange in the heat of the moment and the Eren willing to murder his friends in cold blood. The manner in which it would work is this: * Eren is still shaken from killing Hange in the heat of the moment * He is preparing to kill his former friends, but doesn't know if he can follow through * Steeling himself, he beheads Connie * Eren has the same moment of self-realisation the Unique describes - grimly accepting what he is and what he has become. Hopefully that addresses all the issues you've raised. If there's anything I've overlooked however, please let me know.
@@octobersanctuary I see what you are getting at, but you did overlook one thing, and that is the scene where a chunk of Mikasa's hair is sliced away by Eren. So your idea of Eren showing hesitation when going to kill Connie would look disjointed when compared to how he sliced off a part of Mikasa's hair. The only way to make the transition from reluctant killer to blood-cold killer should be when Eren is talking to Annie. Now the rewrite is not the manga nor the anime, and that can be seen as a hindrance because your problems might have been rectified with better pacing in those formats. And, with how the characters are drawn and how the panels are spaced, we could probably see a cleaner transition of Eren being the cold-blooded killer without it being jarring for the audience. I don't know if that helps rectify the problem.
@@jordanlang5172 In the case of the example you bring up, I would cite that as another instance of Unique rushing Eren into the stone-cold killer phase of his character arc. With that said, it is a powerful moment and you wouldn't necessarily need to excise it for the scenario in my previous comment to work. Consider the following: * Eren is still shaken from killing Hange in the heat of the moment * He is preparing to kill his former friends, but doesn't know if he can follow through * Mikasa intercepts him * Steeling himself, Eren engages her * The two strike at each other. * Mikasa's blade misses completely, Eren's barely misses and takes a chunk of her hair with it * Both of them freeze for a split second in shock at the implication of what just happened. * Sensing Eren's hesitation Mikasa tries to reach out to him again but Eren kicks her away before she can say anything - he can't afford to lose his nerve. * Events play out as they do in the rewrite * Sensing his opportunity Eren steels himself to attack Connie - he doesn't like it but he can't turn back, it's kill or be killed * Eren beheads Connie * Processing what he's done, Eren has the same moment of self-realisation the Unique describes, before grimly accepting what he is and what he has become. You make an excellent point in that much of Eren's transition could be implied through visual storytelling. The issue there however is that it's less a case of the transition being rough, so much as it being incomplete. Because of the speed with which Unique rushes through the transition, there are very few nuances that can be extrapolated from the rewrite itself without going into head-canon territory.
@@octobersanctuary It took me a while to think about your last post. With regards to you saying Eren's arc feels incomplete, what do you think of him having a moment after realizing Paradis is destroyed? We could see his thoughts about feeling regret for killing Hange, his friends being burned by Ymir, and the realization of what needs to be done to stop the burning. When Eren thinks, "The only way to save them is...." He looks at his friends. This mirrors the scene from when Eren thinks about how the problem of the Titans would go away if all Eldians died, which was during Chapter 130. But there is a difference, manly when Eren has a flashback when Historia saved him during the royal family arc. Eren thinks, "But I can't....just accept that!!" Having this flashback ties into the conversation he and Mikasa have after he kills Connie, but not only that, he ties into Eren's mental state. What do I mean? Well, Ymir saved Historia by telling her to live her own life, which she did by rejecting her father, which saved Eren. Eren, after being saved by Historia, falls in love with her, which makes him live his own life, which circles back to Ymir. Does that make it more complete? That scene was supposed to help him not rush his transition, but let me know if it didn't.
Your ending is not perfect, but wow, is it a quality ending! A certain 8/10 from me. Still haven't finished off the video, but you've got a new subscriber. I personally believe if the AOT ending was to be rewritten, it should have been rewritten since the arrival at the sea, or at least from the Battle at Liberio. The series from chapter 90 should have been 50% longer (roughly 70~ chapters) to allow for all new relevant characters to be fleshed out, and for the story to stabilise and build properly.
When I first started watching Part 1 I really did not expect him to be able to fix as much of the plotholes and general story progression as he did. Given how much had already started falling apart earlier in the arc, it's incredible that someone could even make something as cohesive as this starting so late in the show.
Ok so I finished this rewrite and I really need to talk about this bc it’s really making me thinking about it and I love talking about things I enjoy. Okay SO first off, I obviously gotta compliment how tightly written this ending is, basically EVERY loose thread is tied up and it’s so crazy how you’ve managed to do something like that. Aot for the most part is already incredibly written and to tie up everything up so nicely is insane. The thing is, that with this ending, it’s almost like, TOO tragic if that makes sense. Making the central trio drift off from Eren is a DIFFERENT kind of pain, it’s such a strong consequence compared to the canon ending. Honestly, props to you for being able to find a different consequence for Eren that isn’t just his death. BUT, ME PERSONALLY, it’s just such a different level of dispair that I wouldn’t know how I should feel. I KNOW that aot isn’t supposed to be a feel-good story with a happy ending, if it was I probably wouldn’t be talking about it at all. BUT I’d like some sort of satisfying ending that’s at least extremely bittersweet, similar to the canon ending. The EreHistoria twist wasn’t enough to give me that bittersweet feeling bc I personally never even thought about Eren and historia being an actual ship till this video. Of course that’s due to the fact that it has little to no groundwork put in to establish it since it wasn’t canon. Maybe if the ship was implied a bit more heavily then I’d be fine with this ending? But as it stands, I feel it’s not satisfying enough for me, PERSONALLY. Even if I don’t personally fully enjoy this rewrite, I can’t say it’s horrible and I’m glad you were able to write it with so much passion, it really shows. And I’m even more glad other people were able to enjoy this so much that they’ve considered this ending canon instead, that’s great. Thank you for writing this ❤️ Tl;dr: I’m a whiny baby that wanted this to be an at least somewhat happy ending but Eren’s relationship with his friends breaking is TOO tragic for me and the ErenHistoria plot twist wasn’t enough to give me that bittersweet feeling.
This is quite a good plotline than the one Isiyama left the story on with. Hope this gets picked up on the mainstream. I absolutely love this and am so glad that you were able to tie up and give a resolution to the Masterpiece that is Attack on Titan, you fulfilled every lose end and story arc so well that its genuinely shocking that Isayama himself didn't come up with it. Thank you so much for giving closure to this wonderful story.
You... filled a void that i felt lost purpose in the story when i first finished reading AOT years ago up to its ending that same day it was released. Reading the story originally felt like what was the point of all the amazing plotlines that Isayama started all being betrayed and ignored forgetting what was first established from the logic of the development... and all i had in mind occupying the void was What was Ymir's motive? Why did Eren half-assed his rumbling after being resolved see through it because there was no turning back? What was the point of giving the baby or pregnancy of Historia foreshadowing, only to be hooked up with a bully farmboy from the past she never loved? Why wasnt the warhammer titan fully utilized? Eren is smart enough to take advantage of it. Why does killing Zeke stop the rumbling when it was established from the start part that Eren in paths convinced Ymir that they no longer need Zeke to take control of the power. Why would Armin thank Eren for killing everyone for their sake? He was against killing from the start! Why did they make Reiner a Historia simp and creep in the end? Why does Jean have to be forced to be paired with Mikasa? Why is there a tree again implying that the Titan powers never died out despite showing that the hallucegenia dying at the final battle? Why did it have to end with Eren failing at 80% only for us to rub it in that Paradis get destroyed by enemies after thousands of years? It just makes everything Eren was fighting for all pointless. Why is it only Ymir knows....? You did so much more than just fix the plotholes by answering all that. You gave depth and deeper purpose for all the characters that was just left aside or in a hivemind for a black and white ending that was supposed to be morally grey from a story that questions both sides of the spectrum. I love what you did for Hanji, Yelena, Gab, Falco, Historia, Mikasa, Armin, Eren, Zeke, and Reiner. You made all their choices and consequences make sense to who they were based on what was established beforehand and the appropriate consequences to their actions. I felt tears at sad and gut wrenching moments imagining how the tragic or beautiful ends to the characters happened that i couldn't feel from the original ending. I love what Isayama made as a world and story but it betrayed me that he couldn't conclude it in a way that made sense to what he made. And I'm grateful you gave that conclusion justice, that I can live peacefully knowing I can imagine what was the potential that could have happen if Isayama just had the courage to see through what he originally had before the retcons. This started off really well like brilliantly and then it went down and down and down and when the Historia plot line dropped this immediately became a joke. Like can y’all let this stupid ship go? Historia NEVER liked Eren, Eren NEVER liked Historia. Yeah Isayama’s ending was better.
@@desertchrome4538 It's fine to have a different opinion and like what you like. But Isayama already admitted he didn't pull of the ending the way he exactly wanted it to in his interviews. Many plot points that he foreshadowed were left in the air and changed completely by the final arc that were inconsistent. So for me it's better to be answered than left up to Ymir only knows.

This is seriously fantastic. Damn. I'm still processing it all, but I don't think you could've done a better job with this. I've been following this series for the past 10 years and this is the first time it's felt like I can get closure for these characters

But my friend, genuinely, I dont care how much views or subscribers you got from this video, you have made something amazing Stand proud, people like you are what makes me proud to be "human". ...Wow. Time for me to be long-winded again. 1. Okay to start, THANK you for bringing Misaka's Eldian blood into play via the dragon/founder plotline. Even as someone who doesn't hate the OG ending, the story really never did anything with the unique blend of ancestry that is Misaka, and that always bugged me. And I've gotta give kudos to the use of the dragon in general, as someone who has spent a long long time studying mythology for my own creative reasons, the nod to the Norse mythology that AoT pulls so heavily from, not to mention how effectively it was foreshadowed at the beginning of the rewrite - it caught me off guard, and that was fun. 2. Doing my boy Reiner justice by letting him be armor...even without the Titan itself, and act in accordance with everything he has learned, was effective. Letting him be the sort of voice this story has effectively snuffed out time and time again with characters like pre-Rumbling Armin or Onyankopon. It's consistent with the heart he has spent his life ignoring. The person caught between his two identities. 3. It was pretty smart to yank so many of the happy endings away as you did via the Pure Titan chaos. It tested the limits of the characters, their will, their ideals, and their sanity, in a way that feels tonally and thematically consistent with Seasons 1, 2, and 3...realistically cruel. 4. Ymir's decision regarding Historia is a very nice cherry on top of a sundae I didn't know I was eating, so thank you for that. Did not expect Ymir to get genuine closure, and this character beat eliminated the concerns I might have had about Rumbling Paradis offscreen, those concerns mostly having to do with Historia. 5. Armin snapping on Eren at the cliffside had me genuinely tense, I actually stopped for awhile there to write my comment and ensure I didn't lose or forget my lengthy commentary on everything that happened before then.......so imagine my utter bewilderment when his answer to Armin's question turned out to be what it was, after having come back down from all that excitement. It really was an AoT tier twist, because even the popularity of that ship and the prominence of that theory, the identity of Historia's child was the furthest thing from my mind when it was revealed, and said reveal was very well placed at the most jarring, shocking and impactful spot in the narrative it possibly could have been. Way to test Armin's character in a way that makes sense and feels both tragic and earned, and neither justified nor condemned the person he spent most of the AoT's story being. Hell, way to test the alliance, Falco, Gabi ESPECIALLY, and even the audience's growth, with the unfairness final conflict of this story. It was, again, a bit confusing to follow in places as various specificities and mechanics were spelled out, and more often than not I absolutely needed to mentally imagine the scenes playing out with the character's voices to really sell a scene, but I can't pretend for a second that it doesn't make for a powerful conclusion to this war, and stellar finale to this story overall.
Also the last 30 minutes have a LOT more worthy of praise that I didn't get to mention, and really showcase how good this rewrite is at more than just dramatic moments, plot twists and potent action scenes. The strength of the narrative closure on display made me connect with the story emotionally on a level that I didn't expect to. Excellent work tying everything together, *especially* the things that weren't your ideas at the start.
*wipes sweat off brow* Oh thank god, a positive comment about the dragon twist. The only other thing i've seen was "That was a bit of a stretch", which for what it is, isn't really BAD, but I was a little weary. I Felt like that George Lucas "I might have gone too far in one or two places" quote. Thanks for the quality comment as usual. On point 5, I don't quite understand "armins question turned out to be what it was" Are you saying you guessed the twist in the comment you were writing oorr?
@@Uniquenameosaurus Yeah that was an.....admittedly very long sentence. What I said being "when the answer to Armin's question turned out to be what it was". What I meant being that when Armin had Eren on the cliffside ready to toss him, I'd stopped watching to start putting my thoughts into my lengthy comment because I had a lot to say, so that tension hung in the air. When I returned, that drawn out suspense culminated in that twist, and it hit me that much harder. Also, I don't take issue with the dragon because the way I see it, the form of the 'origin of all living matter' that Ymir fused with in the original story, was arbitrary. The Titans are humanoid because Ymir was human, as were all of her descendants. The tree that she found it under took on an alien form under its influence too, and every time even a little imagination was applied to the Titan powers by a mind of a new shifter, it became less normal and more strange. This too, was true even in the original ending, when we saw the countless likenesses of shifters past. So it stands to reason that someone who actively sought to make it something new, would have absolute control over what form the power took. If anything I'd say it's consistent, since the last two shifters we see in the series before this are Eren's giant ribcage-serpent titan, and a literal flying titan covered in feathers.
@@TipoIrritable Even if I agreed that the Mikasa and Ymir narrative was better conceptually (which I don't, the pathos of the answer for Ymir's motives being "love" feels incredibly contrived and frankly, trite), the subplot was poorly executed on a lot of basic and fundamental storytelling levels regardless. I'm not even someone who hates the original ending, even the manga version, but the conclusion to that subplot genuinely feels like something out of an entirely different series for how much it fumbles on a narrative and storytelling level (and don't even get me started on the anticlimax that was Historia's character in the original...or her child for that matter. Like wow, that complete and utter writing misfire is bad enough that it feels like a plot beat straight out of RWBY, and for something as near to perfection as AoT that's.....honestly baffling).
This is genuinely amazing, that ending was soooo emotional and powerful, jesus christ everything is so perfectly tied up and resolved but the tragic consequences still linger, i would actually cry if this was the actual ending and would hands down make shingeki no kioshin the best series i ever watched.
1:40:30 i LOVE THAT! Eren did this all for his friends (but i love how he’s even thinking if it was really all for them or himself too), the consequences being that he lost them in the end. Its a different type of torture because he’ll SEE them live on and actively struggle with their new relationship with him! That’s gotta hurt. And is definitely a good consequence for his actions. They where his world after all, and now he’s tryna figure out if his world hates him. 1:41:45 I’m so PISSED the advert ruined this moment for me!!! I was tearing UP!!!! 1:44:50 TOO GOOD!!! Thank you for fulfilling the void that the ending left me. This is the best rewrite I've ever seen about it. Although I still have some gripes, the ending more than makes up for it. Thank you for setting Eren and Ymir free.
You cooked harder than the Collosal Titans cooked Hangi The way you managed to tie everything together and finish all the arcs and fire all the Chekov guns was masterful!
Gonna write a comment going into detail about what i loved about this fantastic rewrite on your first video part, but what I want to say is thank you, Unique. I've been following Attack on Titan since its first season and it became a story very important to me especially because of the themese of fighting for one's life against all odds whether that be depresseion, expectation, despair etc. but also because of the themes of no one should feel like they need to justify their own existence or be ashamed that they were born into this world. For giving us this great resolution to the story, I want you to give yourself all the credit in the world. I know you have the benefit of hindsight and fan theories, but you still wrote original narrative beats that were perfect, voiced the emotional bits perfect and created your own form of what the story should have been with your own originality. A satisfying ending exists because of you and i think its gonna take the bad taste out of the mouths of many fans like myself who felt disappointed by the ending, feeling like Isayama (somewhat understandibly) wanted to be done with it. Thank you, Unique. You make me want to be a better writer, brother!
My man your tomfoolery with the story touched my heart like very little stories could. By standing on the shoulders of the colossal Isayama you reached to the clouds themselves like the true attack titan. Great job.
Even the explanations of mechanics is brilliantly done, not sure if this was intentional but explaining the nine titans as aspects of herself works wonders metaphorically as well; you could say Eren in gathering the attack titan, the warhammer, and the founder has finally given Ymir her freedom back with the attack titan, and her creativity back with the warhammer (with the founder being her primary consciousness the ability to acknowledge and act on it). Further reinforcing that the uninspired forms of the titans being the result of her creativity (the warhammer) being kept from her. I don’t leave comments often but damn does this deserve it; the rewrite is so good I honestly couldn’t get it out of my head, watched it a second time and still hope that this somehow gets to make it as an official adaptation; maybe someone will give it the requiem treatment and that gets adapted (god I hope so, but i can dream). Undoubtedly AoT is a beautiful story and while I wasn’t unsatisfied with the ending we got, this rewrite feels like the masterful crescendo that AoT was supposed to have; I sincerely hope I get to see the picturesque moments painted in my mind come to life (I can see “Eren looking out at the horizon on Annie’s Titan shoulder, a serene look on his face as his acceptance washes over him” - and so many more amazing moments). Even if I never get to see it in person thank you so much for sharing the dream of what could have been.
IMO, Reiner was the one character who continued to be consistent with his season 1-4 (Still refusing to call them parts) through seasons 5, 6 and two specials. Mind you, it also helps that he was one of the strongest characters. Massive resolve, the culmination of his internal conflict going so extreme and then clawing back to being able to live with himself.
I wasn't shure if I was gonna like your rewrite after I watched the first part, but now I have to say that it's AMAZING. While I dont think it has a lot of mass appeal due to how long and complex your ending is, I do like how you resolved some of the characters a lot more. Reiners death made me shead a tear and the part about Ymir reincarnating as Erens child made my jaw drop. Also what you did with Mikasa was great. Your explanation of her headaches was so satisfying Love your videos and hope you're doing better soon
Ya know, I'm an ending enjoyer. It wasn't perfect but there was still much I enjoyed about it but holy moly this rewrite was incredible! Props to ya, Unique, for doing such an ambitious undertaking such as this! I can't wait to see more from ya! :)

I really like what you've done with this rewrite but I also have a major problem with it. You kill off the entire world with the rumbling. Acting like only the main characters matter, and that their struggle is meaningful even when everyone else is gone, is nuts. AOT was always a character drama, true, but the rumbling and Eren's initiation of it had weight because saving the world genuinely was a massive element of the plot. Having a few people left existing in peace feels less poignant than the 80% effective rumbling. Creating a false equivalence between Eren comitting genocide on a worldwide scale and the other characters' crimes is disingenuous, and by making the other characters more complex you've reduced Eren to purely his destructive side. His actions, as well as his punishment for them are so compelling in the original exactly because he values the freedom of others as well as his own and because these two things are in conflict with one another. Eren cannot survive the finale for these reasons and the other characters sparing him feels arbitrary when he's clearly an unbelievably destructive person who would not be conducive to peace. And there's what, 50 people left on earth? You've taken the character drama to the absolute extreme. To be fair, Isayama hasn't given you much to work with in terms of building up the outside world. But if ONLY these characters matter, there's no context for them to matter within. I've only written this out because I love everything else about your rewrite. Regardless of my criticism, I'm really impressed by this and hope you're proud of it. Ramble over.

Not the fan of the OG ending but this rewrite had me tearing up fitting ending for eren cost for his freedom wasn’t his death but the end of his friendship to armin and mikasa but you know what they say the price of freedom is steep. God I love that he repeat the same line of his mom to his daughter He finally understood what that truly meant.
I greatly appreciate all the effort you put into this rewrite. I personally didn't have too much of an issue with the anime ending. Imperfectly cathartic, as I called it- but so far, I'm loving the coherency of this rewrite and how new it feels. I may not like it all but good God- it feels different and not just wish fulfillment! I appreciate AoT again, and it encouraged me to pick up writing again. I like what you said about how authors have a ton of practice in the middle of the plot vs the end. Also- please take care of yourself!!

I have mixed feelings about your ending bc you did exactly what this story was meant to do which is to connect all the dots and explain every plot inconvenience which you did in a rather realistic way. However, i personally believe that the OE were history repeats itself and the cycle of violence never ends is a more suitable ending to it for the sole reason that aot was meant to be the mirror of our own world. I dont know why but my personal favorite ending would probably be a combination of what we got with ur ending. Still a really good job so yeah im just a mere watcher who really appreciate the fact that aot exists
I don't look into rewrites much for a story I'm mostly satisfied wit & often it gets too 'fanfictiony' for me. But this was INCREDIBLE from start to ESPECIALLY finish & so engagin. My fav part was def all the later stuff u did for Historia as that's my 1 Big criticism of the endin where she's jus kinda sidelined has a kid wit some random dude & that's it for her other than implyin she was in on Erens' plan. The last part really put it all together really beautifully imo & even the crazier shit u did makes sense. If I could I'd turn this into a fan manga/animation lol. I'm glad u're doin well lately & I'm excited to C u're content when it pops around. It couldn't have been easy puttin this together even wit the advantage u have here since it's AOT of all the things so I feel this is still a very accomplished achievement of urs. thx for the fun ride

I like the ending cause it made Mikasa have more agency outside of Eren and how it’s still bittersweet all three get to live on with their lives while accepting things could never go back to what they were before

In the original he didn't want to kill them because Isayama wanted to pull off that stupid code grass rip off ending which made no sense. But eren actually fighting back to live for himself makes more sense. Eren being the father of historia didn't come out of nowhere and it also makes sense since it plays a huge role in this ending and a way to serve a perfect conclusion to this ending and all the characters, especially eren and historia themselves
Eren's turn from being the hero to the villain and Reiner's inverse in this rewrite with him becoming more akin to Eren's state of mind in season 3 is so powerful
Dude this is so freaking good! I am going to save these videos and relisten to them later like an audiobook. Thank you so much for scratching that itch of AoT! The end disappointed me once with the manga ending, and again with the anime. This just fills me with so much feels and good conclusions for all these characters. I would say it makes me depressed that this isn't real, but honestly, you do such a great job with the descriptions of everything that this is PLENTY GOOD ENOUGH. Thank you for the effort into making this. It makes me want to cry, especially that good ol' Nier Automata OST. 🙏🙏🙏😔
The only thing that disappointed me with the reveal is that we didn't get flashbacks of their full conversation on chapter 130 and maybe even their marriage and wedding night (I know that I'm being horny suggesting the last one, but If It were to happen, it should be extremely similar to the chapters of Tokyo Ghoul where Kaneki and Touka conceived Ichika)!

You created something great, you're clearly very skilled. I cant help but notice though how every writer prioritizes what they personally deem most important or are most interested in. In your case, its characters and relationships (+cool set piece action moments). However, some metaphysic/philosophical worldbuilding elements clearly took the back-set. Hallucigenia was skipped completely and I know there is at least some part of the fandom that found the origin of the titan curse one of their favorite mystery elements. The "origin of all life" thing. Of course, thats one of the hardest things to answer cause metaphysical questions are basically impossible to answer.
Yeah… this might be my head canon for AoT as well. I took the original ending from the manga/anime for granted, but this feels like a much better bittersweet ending.

I won’t lie, keeping Eren alive is probably the only decision I hated from your rewrite. When you initially said it, I was so upset. Eren is the biggest piece of shit. I love him as a character and the level of quality he has but the contents of that character make me angry. Much like Light Yagami, I wanted nothing more than to see him suffer as per the consequences of his actions. But almost like you heard my thoughts, you called out the fact that that mindset is almost hypocritical and antithetical to the idea of breaking the cycle of violence. I remember smiling and accepted your challenge, make me try and “forgive” him. I don’t know how tf you managed to do it but by god, you did. Basically as much as the Alliance did. Nothing but hatred for Eren but that willingness to let him live on as any meaning his death would have is pointless and only detrimental to any sort of peaceful resolution. One thing that doesn’t sit right with me with how you left Eren’s story is just how he did basically get away with it. It feels uniquely cruel that someone as evil as him gets to live while billions died. On a farm with his wife and daughter. Even with his regrets and sadness, it just doesn’t feel enough of a punishment that someone like Eren deserves. Id say thats still my only gripe with how his story ended. But when Eren said the same words his mother said to him but to Ymir, I won’t lie, I nearly cried. Personally, I hate the fact he lived and basically got away with it. But that moment alone makes it worthwhile. Good job on that! As a fan of the anime’s ending, faults (and there is a lot of those) and all, there is no denying that the ending feels disjointed from everything that came before. While that ending ends how I wanted it to and gives satisfaction in some ways, your ending feels exactly what I expected it would end when I first read 134. Isayama gave himself an impossible task and while I think he hit the target, it was def no bullseye. But as you so humbly put it, with the benefit of hindsight and retrospective, you managed to craft a near perfect ending in my eyes. Its a very well done rewrite. It makes me angry and upset in all the right ways. And it gives me inspiration for stories that I am writing. But it also gives the satisfaction and proper closure I needed. Like how Mikasa says it herself, its cruel but beautiful. Bravo! 👏
The prime example of the phrase "let him cook" like this was not only interesting and entertaining to listen to but going into detail that there was no room for questions left unanswered for me. All the characters in these two parts were too outdone with the amount of detail and conclusion to them it is utterly brilliant the creativity of the action and dialogue that was consistent and satisfying closure to many characters. I never thought such a turn of the finale could have been this well made and original, with shocking twists and turns in this new plot but the outcome was something else and for Eren to hold his daughter with saying 'you are free' as it was teasered was the cherry on top. This is definatly without a doubt one of the best thought out reimagined Attack on Titan endings and thank you for dedicating your heart to this rewriting.
Damn, it's just too good writing. It can even give parallel to pandoras box where when the wall was broken down/ opened, the terror was given to the world (to both parties, not just marley but also to paradis). However, after all of that, in the end, hope emerges and always reminds us that it always exists. With this, it makes aot not pessimistic but also not too optimistic (knowing that everyone except them died). For more parallel to other myths or even religion, the rumbling could be the symbol of the great flood, which was often done as a retribution to the evilness that has spread to mankind. It not only appears in the Genesis flood narrative, but also in Manvantara -sandhya in Hinduism, the Mesopotamian flood stories, the Cheyenne flood story, and even, hear this, Deucalion and Pyrrha in Greek mythology. Where Pyrrha, the ancestor of the next generation after the flood is the daughter of Pandora herself.
Honestly I just came here from the first and loved that so much I had to sink another 2 hours lol. One thing I really loved that you did in the first was add the consequences and stakes back into the story. At the end it just felt like “oh everyone gets a happy ending, even Erin since he got to reconcile with everyone yippee!” Like even the eldian’s who were force transformed got turned back and the Titan weirdest all got to live full lives. The full lives I can deal with but seriously all the people who had a somber and meaningful end like Connie, Jean, and the families of the Titans just were ok and all of that buildup was wasted. I remember the part I loved most while initially watching was Annie’s blood curling scream as she lost everything and now could only fight just to feel like it wasn’t all for nothing. But then 5 minutes later it’s all fine again and that impact was gone.
I was genuinely cheering throughout this. I genuinely want this version animated, it's better than the original hell if this was the ending to attack on titan it would be my favourite piece of media EVER. I'm really not a fan of "if we kill him we're no better" but this manages to look EXACTLY LIKE THAT but surpass it in a way where it's genuinely satisfying. I hate this phrase cause it's user everywhere and it's never consistent something bad will be called it and it annoys me but this is.... Peak. Fiction.

Eren ends up with Historia a woman who he had mostly interacted with for an arc and a half. Two people who have acted nothing but platonically with each other suddenly end up together for no reason whatsoever. Okay one of the few things I was disappointed in the first part is when Paradis was destroyed, not because I thought it was a bad decision, but simply because that would mean the end for Historia. And I felt like it was a bad decision because it felt like a bad way to end her character. Off screen and only by an implication.
So thank you for surprisingly being able to have your cake and eat it.

Given how this was almost all original, I had no idea what to expect coming off the first part. And I will say I am not disappointed at all. You did some really, really ballsy things with this part and it was seriously something else. The themes’ implementations were genuinely fascinating and I like how you included ANR theory while still keeping things original. I also love how you didn’t leave a single character in the dust. You tied every character’s arcs together and even kept giving Eren character development after leaning more towards the villain angle with him. You didn’t leave anyone behind, and that’s exactly what I think the story needed. Watching this entire rewrite was 4-ish hours well-spent.

My gosh I freaking cried so much. After realizing Ymir betrayed Eren and destroyed Paradise to make EVERYONE suffer she did a full circle and saw a child do the same thing she did 2,000 years ago. That was incredibly heartbreaking and beautiful. Mikasa was right this world is cruel and yet so beautiful.

I had no previous interest in it nor did I know basically anything about any of the plots of characters. Through the way you told this story though I became so deeply invested in everything, it made me feel like I was watching an ending to a show I had an emotional investment in and it was so good.

@@DaisyFarm_ You should definitely watch AOT, despite it being an anime it doesn't fall into many of the mistakes that I find make anime so insufferable, and I would even say it's one of the greatest series ever made. Until this video came out I quit recommending it to people (so they wouldn't have to experience the betrayal of the original ending's abysmal writing), but just using this as a headcanon I feel makes up for it. Even with the sheer amount of spoilers in this video there's still so, so much more to the show that happened earlier in the series that I think people deserve seeing. Just a random fun reason story-aside would be experiencing the (at least imo) greatest soundtrack the genius Hiroyuki Sawano made, which in my opinion is one of the only real flaws with this video trying to be a new ending (AOT is only AOT when I hear that beautiful German singing and the Sawano Drop).
TLDR: you should watch AOT, you won't regret it :)

I think my only real criticism of Part 1 & 2 is the dialogue, which is quite rough, in my opinion. That said, I imagine the reason for that is little more than this being a rewrite, if it were official in any capacity, some revisions and edits would no doubt be in order. All that aside, like I said, the dialogue is my only criticism. Even as someone who is far from hating the official ending and appreciates what it does well, and what it does poor, more than the average "hater" (I hate this word, but there's little better right now), this rewrite is fantastic. Well done.

What it did need is a LOT more time to breathe. In FMAB the final battle and "ending" was a majority of the final season iirc, and that show had a perfect ending. @@AveragePearEnjoyer I'd say it's also pretty similar to Breaking Bad which did something similar. When shows get so big and filled with moving gears and plotpoints, like AOT, FMA, and to a potentially lesser extent Breaking Bad, I don't think there's any way to finish them besides making a whole season of closing epilogue.
I just think snk did character arcs too explicitly, ie with characters saying out loud what they're thinking to key people involved with what they're thinking so they can resolve it together. The other person shouldn't actually be there for those moments of self realisation especially when they're not a partner or friend who's been trying to shake them out of it, but the FOCUS of their complex. Those are the least likely people to lead you to self awareness on it imo. Do regression arcs that way sure but growth arcs should happen through quiet moments after having run ins with the target of their mental complex.
@@siginotmylastname3969 I would agree with this, but mostly for the ending, not much else, if I'm being honest. I do agree that some characters often exposited how they felt, but to me it always came off as a natural thing to do when they did it. The ending changed this for me, minus one character that if I begin to praise even a little bit, people will ignore all that I have to say. Regardless, I can only somewhat agree, scenes in which a character is expositing how they feel to another character, such as Eren and Zeke talking in Marley, or Erwin and Levi talking in Shiganshina, or even Armin and Zeke talking in the paths (even if it was rushed and a bit too convenient), are all moments where I think the presence of a second character make the scene work better. That's just me, though. I suppose, I think of two characters as people, and people talk to other people, especially if they trust them, and they share the pain they're dealing with. To me, it seems natural, but I understand if it doesn't to you and others.
I agree, but I think that is just the way of speaking that differs a lot, especially since this is a japanese media being changed by an american in a very informal setting so the dialogue's nuances get lost, but of course in a real setting there are editors that take the dialogue and make it more natural and more coherent.
I'm now gonna choose to remember this as the actual canonical ending to AoT, and the world will be a bit gasbrighter.

Honestly I've headconned this ending into my brain over the original and it's made rewatching the show so much more satisfying knowing how they resolved here in the rewrite. I was able to rewatch Season 4 Part 1 without thinking everything to do with the Hizuru roylaty stuff was a waste, among so many other little character arcs and thread that weren't given a satisfying resolution in the original.
For all of my favourite stories, there's always at least one defining moment that really resonates and hits me, often a line of dialogue that strikes me and makes me well up. This rewrite has two.
"I'm not killing billions. I'm choosing not to take a single innocent life more."
This line deserves so much more than being in a RUclips video. To me, this encapsulates the breaking of the cycle of violence so much more than the test of whether you can make peace with Eren (though of course that was a really good and important part of the rewrite.) I adore how this version of the story puts weight on a single life more than once, starting with the cliff baby being saved. The alliance here fought and died and at the end of it all, they only saved a single life, and this story seems to depict that as a victory. Because of course it's a victory. The weight of _any_ life is immeasurable and infinitely precious, yes they could have saved more if they were faster, but they did save _someone,_ someone who would have died if they were even a second slower. Despite everything, they made that difference, and they won. It's a very unusual way of writing the value of life, but if anything, it sells the value way more by placing such weight upon each single life without devaluing the weight of billions, and it's captured very well in this single line.
The second moment is cheating a little because it builds off of everything I just said and caps it all off perfectly, but it does so very well so I have to mention it. Of course, it's the final words of Eren in the story. But, while "you are finally free" has all the weight of what I've already said, I do want to bring attention to my favourite part. And yeah, it's also Eren's mother's words, but it gets a lot of really well done context here whether or not it was intentional.
"Just look how cute she is."
Of all the parts, this bit actually made me genuinely tear up a bit. I think it's because, for all of the ideals and philosophy of the infinite value of life and the breaking of the cycle of violence, of love and connection that was baked into this rewrite, I think this line hits me so very hard because none of it is in this line. For all the dialogue between characters, the weighing of options, the debates on whether to end the cycle of violence, fighting for freedoms, fighting for love and connection, of the value of a single life, it melts away right here. And it does so at a perfect moment with Historia pulling Eren back from placing arbitrary significance onto his child because, as was said, it _shouldn't_ matter. The point of all of the above is that _every_ life matters, not because they're the reincarnation of a special figure or anything, but because they just do. The lack of requirement on what makes these lives valuable is what makes that value infinite. Having all the philosophy melt away and just having Eren love his child without any of it in this moment is, ironically, what makes all the philosophy correct, because that value is there with or without the philosophy. It's beyond being put into a definable box. It's infinite.
So yeah, I really like this rewrite. Enough to make me want to write my own short 500 word micro-essay on its final themes separate from the source material. Thank you for making my day, sincerely.

Also in the video the titans power technically did go away its now dragons, But i can see why you wouldn't like it to be changed and instead removed but i think its nice that it gives mikasa an important role specifically on her family heritage (Even tho it contradicts that the founding titans powers don't work on minority bloodlines) But im pretty sure it got retconned or changed in the original. I posted on the last video as well but this attitude you have is something I wish more writers did when it comes to how they approach adaptations. So many people do not comprehend how insanely difficult it is to build stories from scratch. It requires so much time to let the free association of ideas to coalesce into a coherent story that follows the tenants of "THEREFORE, BUT, BECAUSE." Like any machine, you can't just swap individual parts in and out willy nilly since redesigning one gear means other parts have to move and it can start with wanting to change one little detail and ends with redesigning the whole engine from scratch.
What you're doing is effectively what Isayama's editor did with the difference being you are putting more of your own creative input into the final product rather than just prodding Isayama with questions to stimulate the creative process. It still takes a tremendous amount of creativity and effort to do re-writes and reorganize those component parts into something functional at this scale, but recognizing that you are standing on the shoulders of -giants- TITANS to achieve the heights of this re-write is likely WHY it turned out so well.
You successfully avoid the Hollywood Screenwriter ego trap of thinking "Feh, surely *I*, hollywood writer man, can write better than [insert internationally popular multi-million dollar franchise]! Time to CHANGE EVERYTHING! And also insert some giant mechanical spiders maybe."

I was also skeptical of the direction you took with Eren last part but you wrapped it up perfectly here. Historia and Ymir's last scene with him is absolutely beautiful and is probably the best "last panel" rewrite I've heard of.
Also surprised that you went with Jeanpieck instead of Jeankasa. But it strangely makes sense to me too.
Yeah I never really thought much of jeankada, more of just a teenage crush on his end. I think Mikasa becoming the princess of hizuru and wedding a Hizuru-ese (idk) to get closer to her heritage is a really good way to hammer home Mikasa becoming her own person separate from Eren, breaking Ymir's cycle of servitude.
Because Mikasa was not a parallel to Ymir. She is the antitheses to her (and Eren is the antitheses to Fritz in terms of view of freedom).
Mikasa's love for Eren is what gave her strength for all those years - "Eren, as long as I have you, I can do anything" ep1x6
Ymir's "love" for the King did the opposite, keeping her subdued without any will of her own.
Mikasa killed Eren - despite her love for him, but also BECAUSE of her love for him. She was strong enough to let go of his life in order to free him from his dream. It's the ultimate example of how her love for him gave her agency and strength.
This makes Ymir realise that her love for Fritz was doing the opposite, and that her children should have instead been the focus of her love. (Hence her imagining letting Fritz die by the spear, and hugging her daughters)

The fact you do such a good job working with the source material as much as possible while adding some origional ideas that fit so well is what makes this for me. This is a cut above other rewrite that just feel like fan fiction and actually feels like its supposed to be the ending.
1:42:45 There's one more thing very critical to understanding that this was a retcon - the baby's eyelashes and eyebrows were drawn specifically how Isayama draws baby girls. Throughout the manga we're shown quite a few baby boys and baby girls, and there's been one defining trait with them all - the baby girls have long lashes, and the baby boys don't. Right here we're seeing a man holding a baby girl, meaning this COULD NOT have been Grisha holding Eren.

Isayama said "Here is the final panel!", showed a panel of a man holding a baby girl saying "you are free", and then when the ending came out that panel was a semi-random flashback not at the end, of a man instead holding a baby boy, which the context of is somewhat strange as Uniquenameosaurus pointed out. Definition-wise, sure you're right, but practicality-wise a retcon is the most fitting way to describe it by far.

This occurs after the scene where Eren says he doesnt know why he had this deep feeling to wipe it all away. But the panel explains that Eren has always been who he was since the day he was born, and the concept of freedom is drilled into him to the point where his longing for it becomes a big part of his identity and keeps him moving forward.

I find it more compelling from a writing perspective to deal with the problem of the "magic" causes when mixed with humans.

Bro, I actually got giddy when Mikasa got this new unexpected role, and when you brought up the twist about the mythological dragon to boot. At the end of part 1 I couldn't imagine how the rest would need its entire own video, but yeah, now I see why. The twists and developments just kept coming as the hype train had no brakes!
But question: Why did Mikasa arrive in Paths with only one blade? And if only that one got yeeted away, wouldn't her other blade still be stuck in herself?

I spose it doesn't really matter much since it doesn't affect anything, so I'm not sure if I thought about this and then didn't include it, or just never thought about it. Regardless, the blade would have had to be still in her neck during the fight in paths, or she'd have to remove it on her arrival. But the blade would have definitely come with her, I just don't mention it.
Also technically yes, every eldian has a very minute piece of blade inside them just as the spinal fluid was split among all eldians, which at first you think, "but there's like 10 eldians left alive, so it'd be a bigger chunk right?" But there's still all the collosals for it to go to as well.

Goddamn, Reiner's arc and the ending callback with Ymir/Carla was fucking amazing. I also really loved imagining a lot of the action setpieces you came up with.
I'm not crazy about everything. On first run through, Mikasa's explanation of alternate timelines was practically incomprehensible, but that might just be a me thing that goes away if I go back over it a few times. Armin's development throughout this whole thing seemed kind of scatterbrained, but wtf do I know.
Ultimately, it doesn't quite reach the level of "omg this is the real ending" but in particular, that resolution is going to follow me into my dreams tonight.

First of all, just wanted to thank you for the amazing work you’ve done one these two videos. You have such a singular approach to the way you look at fiction that it always feels as if I have left with a fresh insight on the subject I would have never consider otherwise.
While I was initially lukewarm when you began doing rewrites, watching you refined your theories over the years has been highly informative and immensely helpful - with this latest foray being by far your best to date.
I loved all the unpredictable ways you got the story to twist and turn (I’m an absolute sucker for narrative that veer into unexpected directions) whilst managing to maintain a strong sense of momentum throughout. While some story beats were stronger than others (we’ll get to that later), the plot managed to overall feel like an organic extension of the world and characters - with the two major plot twists you devised (Ymir’s betrayal and Mikasa stealing her powers) being major standouts.
If I had to critique anything about the rewrite, it would be that it highlights a major blind spot in your theory on character depth.
While you rightly assert that beliefs, passions and sensitivities do a much better job at creating depth than individual character traits by themselves, I would argue that solely equating depth with these things is somewhat reductive.
Rather, I believe that what gives a character depth are how the individual components of their personality interact with one another - specifically those that juxtapose with the traits that are the most visible to us.
To use a concrete example, Guts from Berserk is initially presented to us as a violent, brutish and seemingly callous force of nature, primarily driven by his desire for revenge. However as we come to know Guts better, we see that - beneath his aloof, coarse manner - he is also a socially awkward individual prone to moments of intense introspection and possessing a deceptive capacity for remorse, kindness and restraint. It isn’t any of these traits by themselves that gives Guts depth, but rather how they interconnect to create layers to his personality beyond what we can initially ascertain.
In this context, what a character’s passions, beliefs and sensitivities do is reveal aspects of their personality which we not be able to so easily discern otherwise.
In Game of Thrones for example, while Ned Stark is no fool by any means, his resolute sense of honour in the face of deep-seated political intrigue reveals to us a dangerous naivety that ultimately proves to be his undoing when it is exploited by the far less scrupulous members of the court.
How all this applies to the rewrite is that there are occasional moments where the emotional logic used to justify the characters’ decisions either doesn’t quite gel together and leaves it feeling somewhat contrived, or presents the characters in a manner that unintentionally undercuts them - a good example being how aspects of Eren’s post-rumbling arc were handled.
While the idea of Eren becoming a “reverse Thanos” was an undeniably inspired one - taking his character to its logical extreme - the speed with which Eren transitions from reluctant monster to complete acceptance didn’t quite click for me, as it felt like it needed more time to percolate after losing the one thing that had allowed him to rationalize his actions until to this point (protecting Eldia). Instead, I feel like this development would have been better served if it had come in the aftermath of Connie’s death - acting as a point-of-no-return for Eren and forcing him to accept just how far he’s willing to go to remain free.
Likewise, the emotional logic underpinning Eren’s drive to remain free felt vague and loosely-defined, as the place from where this drive is coming from is never truly made clear. Is it from an inability to back down - the angry, impulsive tenacity of his youth brought to a monstrous, tragic extreme? Or is it from the selfish desires of someone who would seek to prolong his life by any means necessary - never truly caring about anyone besides himself? The rewrite kinda hovers between these two throughout the climax - something which severely undercuts Eren’s character in the immediate aftermath of the battle, as his attempts to talk Armin out of killing him unintentionally push the scales in the latter direction and ultimately paint Eren as a selfish coward rather than the tragic anti-villain I suspect you were aiming for.
That isn’t say however that what you’ve done with Eren isn’t a huge improvement on the original source however. Like many others, I was disappointed by the lacklustre direction his character ultimately took and while the rewrite fumbles some of the granular elements of his arc, it does a stellar job of putting Eren on a compelling trajectory that feels entirely unique to him and the world he inhabits.
Apologies for how long this wound up being. Hopefully there is something in all this that is of value to you.
As I said earlier, this is your best rewrite to date and I look forward to seeing the insights you’ve managed to ascertain from this venture.

Didn't the rewrite say that Eren killing Connie was the point-of-no-return for Eren? The whole reason Eren was able to accept who he is was because of the situation at hand. Hange was the reluctant kill, but it was her death that made the killing of Connie easy, while adding to the fact that his friends were trying to kill him. At no point in the rewrite, in the anime, or in the manga, Eren attacked first. His friends attacked first, albeit to live if they wanted to destroy the founding titan power. So him just easily killing his friends is an easy transition.
The question of, "Is it from an inability to back down - the angry, impulsive tenacity of his youth brought to a monstrous, tragic extreme? Or is it from the selfish desires of someone who would seek to prolong his life by any means necessary - never truly caring about anyone besides himself?" was answered in Part 1 of the rewrite. It was the chant of 'If you fight you win, if you lose you die.' The rewrite was blatant in it's reveal, but vague enough to not dangle it in front of your face.
The exchange with Armin was less about making Eren a coward and more about wondering if Armin, who by his nature is kind and is now taking on the role of a vengeful character, would choose to act or make the hard choice to keep peace. It would be different if Eren begged, but he didn't. Armin asked him a reason why he shouldn't kill him, and Eren told him why.

You are correct in that Unique highlights what these actions are supposed to develop Eren's character.
My argument is that, while there is nothing wrong with the arc itself, there is room for improvement in regards to how it was executed in the rewrite.
Furthermore, I argue that where the execution falters can be traced to one of Unique's long-standing theories on character writing in which a character's depth is equated with their beliefs, sensitivities etc.
The problem with this theory is that - in taking an approach in which a characters emotions are logically dictated by their situation - you overlook all the little nuances that make humans tick.
In the case of Hange and Connie, there is a world of difference between an act of violence done in the heat of the moment and one that has been coldly premeditated.
While the idea that - under the right circumstances - Eren could transition between killing one of his friends out of desperation and killing another in cold blood is a logically sound one, the speed in which the rewrite has Eren work through his emotional turmoil at a speed that undermines the sheer weight Unique tells us Eren's transformation is meant to have.
The reason why I proposed Connie's death as a "point of no return" is that it works better at bridging the gap between the Eren who killed Hange in the heat of the moment and the Eren willing to murder his friends in cold blood.
The manner in which it would work is this:
* Eren is still shaken from killing Hange in the heat of the moment

@@octobersanctuary I see what you are getting at, but you did overlook one thing, and that is the scene where a chunk of Mikasa's hair is sliced away by Eren. So your idea of Eren showing hesitation when going to kill Connie would look disjointed when compared to how he sliced off a part of Mikasa's hair. The only way to make the transition from reluctant killer to blood-cold killer should be when Eren is talking to Annie. Now the rewrite is not the manga nor the anime, and that can be seen as a hindrance because your problems might have been rectified with better pacing in those formats. And, with how the characters are drawn and how the panels are spaced, we could probably see a cleaner transition of Eren being the cold-blooded killer without it being jarring for the audience. I don't know if that helps rectify the problem.
@@jordanlang5172 In the case of the example you bring up, I would cite that as another instance of Unique rushing Eren into the stone-cold killer phase of his character arc.
With that said, it is a powerful moment and you wouldn't necessarily need to excise it for the scenario in my previous comment to work.
Consider the following:
* Eren is still shaken from killing Hange in the heat of the moment
* He is preparing to kill his former friends, but doesn't know if he can follow through
* Mikasa intercepts him
* Steeling himself, Eren engages her
* The two strike at each other.
* Mikasa's blade misses completely, Eren's barely misses and takes a chunk of her hair with it
* Both of them freeze for a split second in shock at the implication of what just happened.
* Sensing Eren's hesitation Mikasa tries to reach out to him again but Eren kicks her away before she can say anything - he can't afford to lose his nerve.
* Events play out as they do in the rewrite
* Sensing his opportunity Eren steels himself to attack Connie - he doesn't like it but he can't turn back, it's kill or be killed
* Eren beheads Connie
* Processing what he's done, Eren has the same moment of self-realisation the Unique describes, before grimly accepting what he is and what he has become.
You make an excellent point in that much of Eren's transition could be implied through visual storytelling. The issue there however is that it's less a case of the transition being rough, so much as it being incomplete.
Because of the speed with which Unique rushes through the transition, there are very few nuances that can be extrapolated from the rewrite itself without going into head-canon territory.

With regards to you saying Eren's arc feels incomplete, what do you think of him having a moment after realizing Paradis is destroyed? We could see his thoughts about feeling regret for killing Hange, his friends being burned by Ymir, and the realization of what needs to be done to stop the burning. When Eren thinks, "The only way to save them is...." He looks at his friends. This mirrors the scene from when Eren thinks about how the problem of the Titans would go away if all Eldians died, which was during Chapter 130. But there is a difference, manly when Eren has a flashback when Historia saved him during the royal family arc. Eren thinks, "But I can't....just accept that!!" Having this flashback ties into the conversation he and Mikasa have after he kills Connie, but not only that, he ties into Eren's mental state. What do I mean? Well, Ymir saved Historia by telling her to live her own life, which she did by rejecting her father, which saved Eren. Eren, after being saved by Historia, falls in love with her, which makes him live his own life, which circles back to Ymir. Does that make it more complete? That scene was supposed to help him not rush his transition, but let me know if it didn't.
Your ending is not perfect, but wow, is it a quality ending! A certain 8/10 from me. Still haven't finished off the video, but you've got a new subscriber.
I personally believe if the AOT ending was to be rewritten, it should have been rewritten since the arrival at the sea, or at least from the Battle at Liberio. The series from chapter 90 should have been 50% longer (roughly 70~ chapters) to allow for all new relevant characters to be fleshed out, and for the story to stabilise and build properly.
When I first started watching Part 1 I really did not expect him to be able to fix as much of the plotholes and general story progression as he did. Given how much had already started falling apart earlier in the arc, it's incredible that someone could even make something as cohesive as this starting so late in the show.
True, it started going downhill after the time skip, despite some great parts like Zeke's backstory and the Paths arc.
Ok so I finished this rewrite and I really need to talk about this bc it’s really making me thinking about it and I love talking about things I enjoy. Okay SO first off, I obviously gotta compliment how tightly written this ending is, basically EVERY loose thread is tied up and it’s so crazy how you’ve managed to do something like that. Aot for the most part is already incredibly written and to tie up everything up so nicely is insane.
The thing is, that with this ending, it’s almost like, TOO tragic if that makes sense. Making the central trio drift off from Eren is a DIFFERENT kind of pain, it’s such a strong consequence compared to the canon ending. Honestly, props to you for being able to find a different consequence for Eren that isn’t just his death. BUT, ME PERSONALLY, it’s just such a different level of dispair that I wouldn’t know how I should feel.
I KNOW that aot isn’t supposed to be a feel-good story with a happy ending, if it was I probably wouldn’t be talking about it at all. BUT I’d like some sort of satisfying ending that’s at least extremely bittersweet, similar to the canon ending. The EreHistoria twist wasn’t enough to give me that bittersweet feeling bc I personally never even thought about Eren and historia being an actual ship till this video. Of course that’s due to the fact that it has little to no groundwork put in to establish it since it wasn’t canon. Maybe if the ship was implied a bit more heavily then I’d be fine with this ending? But as it stands, I feel it’s not satisfying enough for me, PERSONALLY.
Even if I don’t personally fully enjoy this rewrite, I can’t say it’s horrible and I’m glad you were able to write it with so much passion, it really shows. And I’m even more glad other people were able to enjoy this so much that they’ve considered this ending canon instead, that’s great. Thank you for writing this ❤️
Tl;dr: I’m a whiny baby that wanted this to be an at least somewhat happy ending but Eren’s relationship with his friends breaking is TOO tragic for me and the ErenHistoria plot twist wasn’t enough to give me that bittersweet feeling.

Reading the story originally felt like what was the point of all the amazing plotlines that Isayama started all being betrayed and ignored forgetting what was first established from the logic of the development...

What was Ymir's motive?
Why did Eren half-assed his rumbling after being resolved see through it because there was no turning back?
What was the point of giving the baby or pregnancy of Historia foreshadowing, only to be hooked up with a bully farmboy from the past she never loved?
Why wasnt the warhammer titan fully utilized? Eren is smart enough to take advantage of it.
Why does killing Zeke stop the rumbling when it was established from the start part that Eren in paths convinced Ymir that they no longer need Zeke to take control of the power.
Why would Armin thank Eren for killing everyone for their sake? He was against killing from the start!
Why did they make Reiner a Historia simp and creep in the end?
Why does Jean have to be forced to be paired with Mikasa?
Why is there a tree again implying that the Titan powers never died out despite showing that the hallucegenia dying at the final battle?
Why did it have to end with Eren failing at 80% only for us to rub it in that Paradis get destroyed by enemies after thousands of years? It just makes everything Eren was fighting for all pointless.

You did so much more than just fix the plotholes by answering all that. You gave depth and deeper purpose for all the characters that was just left aside or in a hivemind for a black and white ending that was supposed to be morally grey from a story that questions both sides of the spectrum. I love what you did for Hanji, Yelena, Gab, Falco, Historia, Mikasa, Armin, Eren, Zeke, and Reiner. You made all their choices and consequences make sense to who they were based on what was established beforehand and the appropriate consequences to their actions. I felt tears at sad and gut wrenching moments imagining how the tragic or beautiful ends to the characters happened that i couldn't feel from the original ending.
I love what Isayama made as a world and story but it betrayed me that he couldn't conclude it in a way that made sense to what he made. And I'm grateful you gave that conclusion justice, that I can live peacefully knowing I can imagine what was the potential that could have happen if Isayama just had the courage to see through what he originally had before the retcons.

Many plot points that he foreshadowed were left in the air and changed completely by the final arc that were inconsistent.

...Wow. Time for me to be long-winded again.
1. Okay to start, THANK you for bringing Misaka's Eldian blood into play via the dragon/founder plotline. Even as someone who doesn't hate the OG ending, the story really never did anything with the unique blend of ancestry that is Misaka, and that always bugged me. And I've gotta give kudos to the use of the dragon in general, as someone who has spent a long long time studying mythology for my own creative reasons, the nod to the Norse mythology that AoT pulls so heavily from, not to mention how effectively it was foreshadowed at the beginning of the rewrite - it caught me off guard, and that was fun.
2. Doing my boy Reiner justice by letting him be armor...even without the Titan itself, and act in accordance with everything he has learned, was effective. Letting him be the sort of voice this story has effectively snuffed out time and time again with characters like pre-Rumbling Armin or Onyankopon. It's consistent with the heart he has spent his life ignoring. The person caught between his two identities.
3. It was pretty smart to yank so many of the happy endings away as you did via the Pure Titan chaos. It tested the limits of the characters, their will, their ideals, and their sanity, in a way that feels tonally and thematically consistent with Seasons 1, 2, and 3...realistically cruel.
4. Ymir's decision regarding Historia is a very nice cherry on top of a sundae I didn't know I was eating, so thank you for that. Did not expect Ymir to get genuine closure, and this character beat eliminated the concerns I might have had about Rumbling Paradis offscreen, those concerns mostly having to do with Historia.
5. Armin snapping on Eren at the cliffside had me genuinely tense, I actually stopped for awhile there to write my comment and ensure I didn't lose or forget my lengthy commentary on everything that happened before then.......so imagine my utter bewilderment when his answer to Armin's question turned out to be what it was, after having come back down from all that excitement. It really was an AoT tier twist, because even the popularity of that ship and the prominence of that theory, the identity of Historia's child was the furthest thing from my mind when it was revealed, and said reveal was very well placed at the most jarring, shocking and impactful spot in the narrative it possibly could have been. Way to test Armin's character in a way that makes sense and feels both tragic and earned, and neither justified nor condemned the person he spent most of the AoT's story being. Hell, way to test the alliance, Falco, Gabi ESPECIALLY, and even the audience's growth, with the unfairness final conflict of this story.
It was, again, a bit confusing to follow in places as various specificities and mechanics were spelled out, and more often than not I absolutely needed to mentally imagine the scenes playing out with the character's voices to really sell a scene, but I can't pretend for a second that it doesn't make for a powerful conclusion to this war, and stellar finale to this story overall.
Also the last 30 minutes have a LOT more worthy of praise that I didn't get to mention, and really showcase how good this rewrite is at more than just dramatic moments, plot twists and potent action scenes. The strength of the narrative closure on display made me connect with the story emotionally on a level that I didn't expect to. Excellent work tying everything together, *especially* the things that weren't your ideas at the start.
*wipes sweat off brow* Oh thank god, a positive comment about the dragon twist. The only other thing i've seen was "That was a bit of a stretch", which for what it is, isn't really BAD, but I was a little weary. I Felt like that George Lucas "I might have gone too far in one or two places" quote.

@@Uniquenameosaurus Yeah that was an.....admittedly very long sentence. What I said being "when the answer to Armin's question turned out to be what it was". What I meant being that when Armin had Eren on the cliffside ready to toss him, I'd stopped watching to start putting my thoughts into my lengthy comment because I had a lot to say, so that tension hung in the air. When I returned, that drawn out suspense culminated in that twist, and it hit me that much harder.
Also, I don't take issue with the dragon because the way I see it, the form of the 'origin of all living matter' that Ymir fused with in the original story, was arbitrary. The Titans are humanoid because Ymir was human, as were all of her descendants. The tree that she found it under took on an alien form under its influence too, and every time even a little imagination was applied to the Titan powers by a mind of a new shifter, it became less normal and more strange. This too, was true even in the original ending, when we saw the countless likenesses of shifters past. So it stands to reason that someone who actively sought to make it something new, would have absolute control over what form the power took. If anything I'd say it's consistent, since the last two shifters we see in the series before this are Eren's giant ribcage-serpent titan, and a literal flying titan covered in feathers.
The sub-plot between Ymir and Historia was lowkey trash.
Mikasa and Ymir sub-plot was better.
@@TipoIrritable Even if I agreed that the Mikasa and Ymir narrative was better conceptually (which I don't, the pathos of the answer for Ymir's motives being "love" feels incredibly contrived and frankly, trite), the subplot was poorly executed on a lot of basic and fundamental storytelling levels regardless. I'm not even someone who hates the original ending, even the manga version, but the conclusion to that subplot genuinely feels like something out of an entirely different series for how much it fumbles on a narrative and storytelling level (and don't even get me started on the anticlimax that was Historia's character in the original...or her child for that matter. Like wow, that complete and utter writing misfire is bad enough that it feels like a plot beat straight out of RWBY, and for something as near to perfection as AoT that's.....honestly baffling).
This is genuinely amazing, that ending was soooo emotional and powerful, jesus christ everything is so perfectly tied up and resolved but the tragic consequences still linger, i would actually cry if this was the actual ending and would hands down make shingeki no kioshin the best series i ever watched.
1:40:30 i LOVE THAT! Eren did this all for his friends (but i love how he’s even thinking if it was really all for them or himself too), the consequences being that he lost them in the end. Its a different type of torture because he’ll SEE them live on and actively struggle with their new relationship with him! That’s gotta hurt. And is definitely a good consequence for his actions. Gonna write a comment going into detail about what i loved about this fantastic rewrite on your first video part, but what I want to say is thank you, Unique. I've been following Attack on Titan since its first season and it became a story very important to me especially because of the themese of fighting for one's life against all odds whether that be depresseion, expectation, despair etc. but also because of the themes of no one should feel like they need to justify their own existence or be ashamed that they were born into this world. For giving us this great resolution to the story, I want you to give yourself all the credit in the world. I know you have the benefit of hindsight and fan theories, but you still wrote original narrative beats that were perfect, voiced the emotional bits perfect and created your own form of what the story should have been with your own originality. A satisfying ending exists because of you and i think its gonna take the bad taste out of the mouths of many fans like myself who felt disappointed by the ending, feeling like Isayama (somewhat understandibly) wanted to be done with it. Thank you, Unique. You make me want to be a better writer, brother!

Even the explanations of mechanics is brilliantly done, not sure if this was intentional but explaining the nine titans as aspects of herself works wonders metaphorically as well; you could say Eren in gathering the attack titan, the warhammer, and the founder has finally given Ymir her freedom back with the attack titan, and her creativity back with the warhammer (with the founder being her primary consciousness the ability to acknowledge and act on it). Further reinforcing that the uninspired forms of the titans being the result of her creativity (the warhammer) being kept from her.
I don’t leave comments often but damn does this deserve it; the rewrite is so good I honestly couldn’t get it out of my head, watched it a second time and still hope that this somehow gets to make it as an official adaptation; maybe someone will give it the requiem treatment and that gets adapted (god I hope so, but i can dream). Undoubtedly AoT is a beautiful story and while I wasn’t unsatisfied with the ending we got, this rewrite feels like the masterful crescendo that AoT was supposed to have; I sincerely hope I get to see the picturesque moments painted in my mind come to life (I can see “Eren looking out at the horizon on Annie’s Titan shoulder, a serene look on his face as his acceptance washes over him” - and so many more amazing moments). Even if I never get to see it in person thank you so much for sharing the dream of what could have been.

IMO, Reiner was the one character who continued to be consistent with his season 1-4 (Still refusing to call them parts) through seasons 5, 6 and two specials. Mind you, it also helps that he was one of the strongest characters. Massive resolve, the culmination of his internal conflict going so extreme and then clawing back to being able to live with himself.
I wasn't shure if I was gonna like your rewrite after I watched the first part, but now I have to say that it's AMAZING. While I dont think it has a lot of mass appeal due to how long and complex your ending is, I do like how you resolved some of the characters a lot more. Reiners death made me shead a tear and the part about Ymir reincarnating as Erens child made my jaw drop. Also what you did with Mikasa was great. Your explanation of her headaches was so satisfying

I really like what you've done with this rewrite but I also have a major problem with it. You kill off the entire world with the rumbling. Acting like only the main characters matter, and that their struggle is meaningful even when everyone else is gone, is nuts. AOT was always a character drama, true, but the rumbling and Eren's initiation of it had weight because saving the world genuinely was a massive element of the plot. Having a few people left existing in peace feels less poignant than the 80% effective rumbling. Creating a false equivalence between Eren comitting genocide on a worldwide scale and the other characters' crimes is disingenuous, and by making the other characters more complex you've reduced Eren to purely his destructive side. His actions, as well as his punishment for them are so compelling in the original exactly because he values the freedom of others as well as his own and because these two things are in conflict with one another. Eren cannot survive the finale for these reasons and the other characters sparing him feels arbitrary when he's clearly an unbelievably destructive person who would not be conducive to peace. And there's what, 50 people left on earth? You've taken the character drama to the absolute extreme. To be fair, Isayama hasn't given you much to work with in terms of building up the outside world. But if ONLY these characters matter, there's no context for them to matter within. I've only written this out because I love everything else about your rewrite. Regardless of my criticism, I'm really impressed by this and hope you're proud of it. Ramble over.

Not the fan of the OG ending but this rewrite had me tearing up fitting ending for eren cost for his freedom wasn’t his death but the end of his friendship to armin and mikasa but you know what they say the price of freedom is steep. God I love that he repeat the same line of his mom to his daughter He finally understood what that truly meant.
I greatly appreciate all the effort you put into this rewrite. I personally didn't have too much of an issue with the anime ending. Imperfectly cathartic, as I called it- but so far, I'm loving the coherency of this rewrite and how new it feels. I may not like it all but good God- it feels different and not just wish fulfillment! I appreciate AoT again, and it encouraged me to pick up writing again. I like what you said about how authors have a ton of practice in the middle of the plot vs the end. I hope u see this comment. I have mixed feelings about your ending bc you did exactly what this story was meant to do which is to connect all the dots and explain every plot inconvenience which you did in a rather realistic way.
However, i personally believe that the OE were history repeats itself and the cycle of violence never ends is a more suitable ending to it for the sole reason that aot was meant to be the mirror of our own world. I dont know why but my personal favorite ending would probably be a combination of what we got with ur ending. Still a really good job so yeah im just a mere watcher who really appreciate the fact that aot exists
I don't look into rewrites much for a story I'm mostly satisfied wit & often it gets too 'fanfictiony' for me. But this was INCREDIBLE from start to ESPECIALLY finish & so engagin. My fav part was def all the later stuff u did for Historia as that's my 1 Big criticism of the endin where she's jus kinda sidelined has a kid wit some random dude & that's it for her other than implyin she was in on Erens' plan. The last part really put it all together really beautifully imo & even the crazier shit u did makes sense. If I could I'd turn this into a fan manga/animation lol. I'm glad u're doin well lately & I'm excited to C u're content when it pops around. It couldn't have been easy puttin this together even wit the advantage u have here since it's AOT of all the things so I feel this is still a very accomplished achievement of urs. thx for the fun ride

@@shivnarayan8532 And also her becoming AOT-Verse's Niddhogg and the twist of her headaches actually being her body reacting to the moments when she undid the timeline's alterations with the Founder is absolutely genius and WAY better than that stupid manipulation memory plot hole the original ending had and Mikasa being the Chosen One for no reason (which was just as bad as Rey being a Palpatine + her and Arya directly undermining the journeys of both Anakin and Jon Snow by killing Sidious and the Night King)!
@@PedroLucas-mg5je only thing I didn’t like was eren actually being full blown crazy actually fighting and trying to kill Mikasa and Armin (which in the original he never wanted to do) and the random part where he had a child with historia out of nowhere also threw me off as this was only a retelling of the ending not the whole show but that’s just me. I like the ending cause it made Mikasa have more agency outside of Eren and how it’s still bittersweet all three get to live on with their lives while accepting things could never go back to what they were before
@@shivnarayan8532 , I actually liked that eren was fully trying to kill them since it really puts his ideology "fight to live" to the extreme. In the original he didn't want to kill them because Isayama wanted to pull off that stupid code grass rip off ending which made no sense. But eren actually fighting back to live for himself makes more sense.
Eren being the father of historia didn't come out of nowhere and it also makes sense since it plays a huge role in this ending and a way to serve a perfect conclusion to this ending and all the characters, especially eren and historia themselves
Eren's turn from being the hero to the villain and Reiner's inverse in this rewrite with him becoming more akin to Eren's state of mind in season 3 is so powerful
in a perfect world, this would be the canonical ending for AOT

Thank you so much for scratching that itch of AoT! The end disappointed me once with the manga ending, and again with the anime. This just fills me with so much feels and good conclusions for all these characters.

The only thing that disappointed me with the reveal is that we didn't get flashbacks of their full conversation on chapter 130 and maybe even their marriage and wedding night (I know that I'm being horny suggesting the last one, but If It were to happen, it should be extremely similar to the chapters of Tokyo Ghoul where Kaneki and Touka conceived Ichika)!

You created something great, you're clearly very skilled. I cant help but notice though how every writer prioritizes what they personally deem most important or are most interested in. In your case, its characters and relationships (+cool set piece action moments). However, some metaphysic/philosophical worldbuilding elements clearly took the back-set. Hallucigenia was skipped completely and I know there is at least some part of the fandom that found the origin of the titan curse one of their favorite mystery elements. The "origin of all life" thing. Of course, thats one of the hardest things to answer cause metaphysical questions are basically impossible to answer.
Yeah… this might be my head canon for AoT as well. I took the original ending from the manga/anime for granted, but this feels like a much better bittersweet ending.
thank you, thank you thank you i cried so much during all of this, my final exams recently finished and i felt empty, finishing highschool and leaving my friends but watching this made me realize even if my friends leave or hate me in any way ill still remember what good memories we have, i cant help but feel thats how eren mikasa and armin feel, in the end they all found happiness, and that made me cry i really loved that you did this and i wish this is how the story really ended, this will forever stay in my heart, thank you so much

You had me crying at the end with the Eren speech, and the Carla's scene on the background tying up the emotional connection of it with the original flashback in the anime.

I won’t lie, keeping Eren alive is probably the only decision I hated from your rewrite. When you initially said it, I was so upset. Eren is the biggest piece of shit. I love him as a character and the level of quality he has but the contents of that character make me angry. Much like Light Yagami, I wanted nothing more than to see him suffer as per the consequences of his actions. But almost like you heard my thoughts, you called out the fact that that mindset is almost hypocritical and antithetical to the idea of breaking the cycle of violence. I remember smiling and accepted your challenge, make me try and “forgive” him.
I don’t know how tf you managed to do it but by god, you did. Basically as much as the Alliance did. Nothing but hatred for Eren but that willingness to let him live on as any meaning his death would have is pointless and only detrimental to any sort of peaceful resolution. One thing that doesn’t sit right with me with how you left Eren’s story is just how he did basically get away with it. It feels uniquely cruel that someone as evil as him gets to live while billions died. On a farm with his wife and daughter. Even with his regrets and sadness, it just doesn’t feel enough of a punishment that someone like Eren deserves. Id say thats still my only gripe with how his story ended.
But when Eren said the same words his mother said to him but to Ymir, I won’t lie, I nearly cried. Personally, I hate the fact he lived and basically got away with it. But that moment alone makes it worthwhile. Good job on that!
As a fan of the anime’s ending, faults (and there is a lot of those) and all, there is no denying that the ending feels disjointed from everything that came before. While that ending ends how I wanted it to and gives satisfaction in some ways, your ending feels exactly what I expected it would end when I first read 134. Isayama gave himself an impossible task and while I think he hit the target, it was def no bullseye. But as you so humbly put it, with the benefit of hindsight and retrospective, you managed to craft a near perfect ending in my eyes.
Its a very well done rewrite. It makes me angry and upset in all the right ways. And it gives me inspiration for stories that I am writing. But it also gives the satisfaction and proper closure I needed. Like how Mikasa says it herself, its cruel but beautiful. Bravo! 👏

The prime example of the phrase "let him cook" like this was not only interesting and entertaining to listen to but going into detail that there was no room for questions left unanswered for me. All the characters in these two parts were too outdone with the amount of detail and conclusion to them it is utterly brilliant the creativity of the action and dialogue that was consistent and satisfying closure to many characters. I never thought such a turn of the finale could have been this well made and original, with shocking twists and turns in this new plot but the outcome was something else and for Eren to hold his daughter with saying 'you are free' as it was teasered was the cherry on top.
This is definatly without a doubt one of the best thought out reimagined Attack on Titan endings and thank you for dedicating your heart to this rewriting.
Damn, it's just too good writing. It can even give parallel to pandoras box where when the wall was broken down/ opened, the terror was given to the world (to both parties, not just marley but also to paradis). However, after all of that, in the end, hope emerges and always reminds us that it always exists.
With this, it makes aot not pessimistic but also not too optimistic (knowing that everyone except them died).
For more parallel to other myths or even religion, the rumbling could be the symbol of the great flood, which was often done as a retribution to the evilness that has spread to mankind. It not only appears in the Genesis flood narrative, but also in Manvantara -sandhya in Hinduism, the Mesopotamian flood stories, the Cheyenne flood story, and even, hear this, Deucalion and Pyrrha in Greek mythology. Where Pyrrha, the ancestor of the next generation after the flood is the daughter of Pandora herself.

Honestly I just came here from the first and loved that so much I had to sink another 2 hours lol.
One thing I really loved that you did in the first was add the consequences and stakes back into the story. At the end it just felt like “oh everyone gets a happy ending, even Erin since he got to reconcile with everyone yippee!” Like even the eldian’s who were force transformed got turned back and the Titan weirdest all got to live full lives. The full lives I can deal with but seriously all the people who had a somber and meaningful end like Connie, Jean, and the families of the Titans just were ok and all of that buildup was wasted. I remember the part I loved most while initially watching was Annie’s blood curling scream as she lost everything and now could only fight just to feel like it wasn’t all for nothing. But then 5 minutes later it’s all fine again and that impact was gone.
I was genuinely cheering throughout this. I genuinely want this version animated, it's better than the original hell if this was the ending to attack on titan it would be my favourite piece of media EVER. I'm really not a fan of "if we kill him we're no better" but this manages to look EXACTLY LIKE THAT but surpass it in a way where it's genuinely satisfying. I hate this phrase cause it's user everywhere and it's never consistent something bad will be called it and it annoys me but this is.... Peak. Fiction.
