    the forging technique you talked about gives me an idea for a race of underwater fire/heat resistant crab people who live around thermal vents.

      Yes! Kickass! I can picture them holding metal in their lava-like claws now. ...I guess we'd have to use the Awakened Animal for that. I can't believe that I'm still so greedy for more ancestries.

    A couple of ideas that comes to mind with this ancestry, one light one dark:
    Light side idea
    A merfolk that came to land to ex0loit their rarity and vocal qualities, she worked in a theater that possessed a giant water pool which held luxurious underwater quarters, she performed for all people, living leisurelly and richly thanks to her shows. Until disaster happened and the theater and her luxurious lifestyle got destroyed( maybe by the bbeg or one of their s7bord8nates, or maybe by unknown circumstances).
    So the merfolk decide to start adventuring to uncover what happened, maybe making some money torebuild her old lifestyle on the side.
    It could be fun to make her a bard, maybe with the celebrity and captivator archetypes to double down, as well as taking all song related feTs from her ancestry.
    Tonalleviate the problem of her land speed it could be fun to make a duo build with another player playing a centaur as your mount, maybe they were your bodyguard before, the owner of the theater or just a good friend. To alleviate the reduced action economy for that player they should probabbly focus on a class with good reactions like a champion.
    Darkside idea:
    The merfolk was a criminal who brought terror and death under the sea through extortion and murder( if you want to go full horror you can sprinkle some cannibalism given that the healing flesh feat does not require the eater not being another merfolk). This went on until one day he were killed for his deeds. This was not the end as he woke up on the beach weakened and changed, with an unfamiliar hunger.
    Theidea is to go full horror mode and play a deep water merfolk, anglerfish like, with the ghoul archetype. Became a ghoul bybeither beng killed by some poison containing ghouls blood, by a curse or by a pact to not die.
    You could go ranger for the hunter vibe, psychic to add some paranormal psychological terror along the way, or a witch having become a ghoul as a result of a pact with your patron to "survive". One way to mitigate speed penalty on land could be to use an undead animal companion as a mount or the swarmkeeper archetype ability to move with your swarm as you sustain it, immagine flies coming out of your undead body.
    This could maybe work better as a villain, oras a player it could pose theconstant conundrum on wheter you will embrace what you became or try mend your ways as you adventure foward.

    A cool thing about merfolk is how nobody can confirm what they're doing down there - a town or sea travel line could pay some of them for rescue in "risky" waters only for them to be the reason why these waters are so risky and why any divers trying to visit their towns are "found" drowned with damaged diving gear...

    Lol, so many possible memes from Merfolk.
    5ft speed? Merfolk uses Splash! (It’s not very enthusiastic)
    Merfolk takes Healing Flesh? Sushi Chef: Omae wa SUSHI-DESU!!!
    And Water Kineticist? Say hello to my Ifrit Merfolk Fire Kineticist!!!
    Edit: Oh, and Strongtail is a reference to the Mudskipper fishes that move around land by folding their tail to jump! I came up with a PF1e Merfolk Monk that essentially did capoeira to hit enemies with their tail.
    I’ve been waiting for this ancestry for years and I’m glad we finally have this!
    I’m also guessing that since Octopus/Squids aren’t actually fish/mammals, the Cecaelia are being considered a separate ancestry from the Merfolk. I can’t remember if they mentioned them in Tian Xia World Guide when they described what the oceans of TX were like.

      Awwww poor little mermaid Pokemon
      Eww. I hope you have some way to regenerate... omg... Vampire with my changes to it and a Merfolk with Healing Flesh... regeneration healing combo. Vampires don't need their organs to live and as long as you're conscious (with my changes to Vampire) you can heal if you're not in sunlight.
      That's a recipe for a Steam Mephit if ever I saw one.
      Are you going to remake your Monkfish then?
      Yeah I'm REALLY glad it's here too. It changes and allows so many things now.
      But... but... Ursula the Sea Witch. :(

    My issue with Apprentice Sea Witch is that it states the spells are from being educated but they're innate and thus cha based rather than int or wis which would make more sense. I agree that water kinecticist make a lot of sense for a merfolk as it's very thematic etc. but a fire kineticist has a motivation for living above the waves and an interesting inbuilt contradiction.

    • @WisdomCheck
      @WisdomCheck  3 месяца назад +1

      Absolutely I agree - fire kineticist would make for a very interesting conflict.
      And I didn't think of the fact that the innnate spells would be based on charisma. I think it should be able to be switched to whatever the hell you want.

    How far sound travels in water is super complex as the sound waves bvounce off the seabed, surface, and layers of different water temperature. For example you might be able to hear something close, and very far, but not at middle distance. Look up "convergence zones for sonar" for some quick guides or diagrams.

    • @WisdomCheck
      @WisdomCheck  3 месяца назад +2

      omg I was hoping for just "it travels half the distance it normally would or 50 ft at normal speaking volume"

    It amuses me to no end that healing Merfolk pick up the legacy of Ghoran as the most desirable delicacy among the playable ancestries. I could see a high level merfolk of questionable morals making a killing on the market as a "Cuisine Consort" that gets eaten and resurrected for a king's ransom.

    • @WisdomCheck
      @WisdomCheck  3 месяца назад +3

      I just love this idea. Wars, trade industries, "harvesting" businesses, even new curses could develop from this one feat.
