TITLE: I Look Up When I Walk - Functional Translation, "I Will Look Up when I Walk"
(Translation - Approximate)
I look up when I walk
So that the tears won’t fall
Remembering those happy spring days
But tonight I am all alone
I look up when I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy summer days
But tonight I am all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk
So that the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow/Thought the tears well up
For tonight I am all alone
(whistling) (whistling)
Remembering those happy autumn days
But tonight I’m all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk
So that the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow/Thought the tears well up
But tonight I am all alone
But tonight I am all alone
(whistling) (whistling)
BACKSTORY:
Kyu Sakamoto was a Japanese singer and actor, best known outside Japan for his international hit song "Ue o Muite Arukō" (known as "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking markets), which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963, making Sakamoto the first Asian recording artist to have a number one song on the chart.
His international breakthrough came in 1963 - Louis Benjamin, executive of British record company Pye Records. heard the song several times and decided to bring it back to England. Due to concerns that the title would be too hard for English-speakers to pronounce or remember, the song was renamed "Sukiyaki", after the Japanese cooked beef dish familiar to the English. The new title was intended to sound both catchy and distinctively Japanese, but other than the language, had no actual connection to the song.
In 1963, Capitol Records released the song in the USA with the alternate title, eventually selling over one million copies and remaining number one on the Billboard Hot 100 number one single for three weeks in June, 1963.
After the international success of "Sukiyaki", Sakamoto went on a world tour that lasted from summer of 1963 to the beginning of 1964. Among the countries he visited were the United States (including Hawaii), Germany, and Sweden. During his time in the U.S., on 13 August 1963, he was a guest of television program The Steve Allen Show.
Sakamoto's only American album, "Sukiyaki and Other Japanese Hits" (Capitol 10349), peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart (now known as the Billboard 200) in 1963 and remained on the Pop Albums chart for 17 weeks.
He received his sole foreign Gold Record of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) by Capitol Records on 15 May 1964 in Hotel Okura, Tokyo
** ADDED COMMENT by Emperor Pabslatine/RUclips
To slightly translate the lyrics better. The repeated opening line of the song (and the actual title of the song) 上に向いて歩こう isn't a statement of how he acts, its him stating he will act a certain way in the future. More like "I'm going to look up as I walk" than "I'm already doing it". I feel this subtle difference obscures the point of the song, that its not that the hypothetical protagonist is depressed, but that they are actually falling apart rapidly and cant handle their current situation...
Otherwise, the translation generally comes off a lot more upbeat than the actual lyrics.

When I was watching TV in the evening August 12 1985, suddenly one urgent news flashed on the screen saying that JL123 lost its trace and was missing. After that I was following all the news on all the channels and some time later they started to report that the flight seemed to have fallen down in an unidentified area among the mountains outside Tokyo and published the onboarded passenger list calling also his real name adding that it was Sakamoto Kyu ( we put family name first) ... I got horribly shocked in that moment... he was very popular in Japan and loved by everybody for so many years not only for his great talent as a professional singer & entertainer but also for his nice, cheerful, sweet, kind character and very charming smile which made all of us his fans immediately... I am sure he is still singing this song near God & angels with this same smile...

My parents have it on 45, that's how I listened growing up.
I grew up in post war Japan hearing this song. He was Japan’s sweetheart. We all cried when he died.
I remember how difficult and dark it was after the war. We were so poor then. A lot of unrest in Japan. people didn’t know what to believe. This song really carried us through it. We all lived this song.
Thanks for your comments. "..people didn’t know what to believe.." Reminds me of The USA Today... : ( GLAD you enjoyed the video : ) Stay well... R.I.P. the the Great Sakamoto...
He would probably be an internationally known person, had he not died so tragically such a beautiful song.
I am an avid fan for anime and I loved this song as soon as I've heard this from one of the animes I've watch I just can't remember what anime tho... his song shows a lot of strong emotion despite the jolly tune.
He is still remembered all over the world.
2020 has been a horrible year for us all - Sakamoto's song is soothing and his smile also.
I understand why he was so loved in Japan.
Cheers from Denmark.

It proves a good song has nothing to do with language . The melody and singing is super .
Most absolutely!!!
and timeless ........
Frans Smulders That is so true of so many songs. I don’t know a word of French, but anything Edith Piaf sings.....
This is a great tune to listen to, but LYRICS to a song are absolutely important.
Couldn't disagree more. The lyrics to this song are first class and totally enhance the singer's performance. I agree that a melody can often be more influential than the words. But, to say 'nothing' to do with language is something that I simply cannot agree with.
Who's still listening to this in 2021?
Even 2022 I'm so happy that this song still lives!!

Kyu Sakamoto was an extremely talented singer and a kind-hearted soul, who became the first Japanese singer ranked No.1 on the Billboard Hot-100 in 1963 (and perished in the crash of JAL-123 in 1985 sadly), but at the same time we must not forget the genius who composed this masterpiece, by the name of Hachidai Nakamura.

*Probably already mentioned, but "Sukiaki" was the first Japanese song to scale the charts and hit #1 in the USA - way back in 1963.*
I hope that is true! I could easily google it, but I will take your word for it mate.
Yes indeed!
I was there in 1963... you heard the song everywhere!
Have any been #1 since?
@Dave Trotter *In the US, no other Japanese singer ever reached the #1 spot again.*

In the US, "Sukiyaki" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, one of the few non-English songs to have done so, and the first in a non-European language. It was the only single by an Asian artist to top the Hot 100 until the 2020 release of "Dynamite" by the South Korean band BTS.[7] "Sukiyaki" also peaked at number eighteen on the Billboard R&B chart,[8] and spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road chart, impressive for a non English song.

Beautiful memory. Thank you for sharing. Whistlers are special people.
Kyu Sakamoto had a lovely voice and was 21 when he made that record. When I first heard this beautiful song, Sukiyaki, in 1961, 63 years ago when I was 14, at the beginning I thought it was Elvis Presley for a moment but very quickly I realised it wasn't. Amazing in that day and age that this song could be a hit in other countries around the world like Australia, where I'm from, even though we couldn't understand the words. The story was about a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall, with the verses describing his memories and feelings. The record with English lyrics by a different artist had nothing to do with the Japanese words.

The only Japanese song that landed number one on Billboard's hot 100 charts!
Also Styx's Mr. Roboto is Japanese-like.
Also David Bowie's China Girl could easily be Japanese Girl.
And ever will.
And its own language. That's special.

I was only 9 when this song first came out, and yet still remembered it well, especially when it was played at the Toyko Olympic games closing ceremony 2021. First Japan lyrics song I ever heard on the radio and still a classic!
When my grandfather & grandmother were young they love this song Sukiyaki, and 20 years ago, I began learn Japanese, this the first song I sang. Yesterday, I had cried while hear "ue o muite arukou namida ga kobore nai you ni"
Me too,i been watch last night the closing ceremony at the tokyo Olympic games 2020 and they played this song of Sukuyaki song by Kyu Sakamoto.
And i take a look here in youtube channel ..and finally i found it.
Makes me feel sad to watch this video that now he's gone now..
I never heard this song when i was young due to lack of tecnology here in my home town..Now i'm age of 65..it's makes me sad to watch it even though i didn't understand the lyrics.
And he is good looking Japanese man.
I'm sure,if he is still aroung in Japan..
Probably he is an old man now..
Sure i am one of his millions fans in this world.R.I.P Kyu Sakamoto..
We never forget you! ❤❤🙏
I was moved to tears when that song was played at the Tokyo Olympics. I do believe that was Kyu Sakamoto's voice over the modern music. That was awesome!!!
I felt the same way! Many years ago I taught this song to Grade 6 for their graduation ceremony as they had studied Japanese that year and I was their music teacher!
I was delighted to hear the song again at the closing ceremony and I am sure those students would have known it!
My son (29) and me heard the song at the ceremony to. We both love this song for years now.
This song was a big hit in US. Even though we didn't understand a word of it. One of my all time favorites to this day.
One of the best things about music is that you can feel what the singer is feeling without lyrics.
Sukiyaki was the only foreign language song to reach number ONE on the billboard top 100. They're is another version done by his daughter to bring it back with a new sound, but also used the orignal in her version. It did not come off very well at all.
@@jlpartainandassociates4719 Sorry Dominique was Number 1 several weeks @ least in New York maybe more places.

English lyrics - Sukiyaki
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Remembering those happy spring days
But tonight I'm all alone
I look up when I walk, counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy summer days
But tonight I'm all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I'm all alone
whistling
Remembering those happy autumn days
But tonight I'm all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I'm all alone
thankyou for that kind sir! Slim
When this song came out in America, it was presented as singer Kyu Sakamoto singing about some Soup. .
Actually this songs lyrics qualifies as beautiful anything from Frank Sinatra at the time..
Jason, thanks for the translation. Such a beautiful song. Calling it 'Sukiyaki' for distribution in America would be tantamount to calling Moon River, beef stew. (Read that somewhere, so true.) Great memory, such a loss of a wonderful talent. 😞
Best wishes!

He was best known outside Japan for his international hit song "Ue o Muite Arukō" (also known as "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking markets), which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963, making Sakamoto the first Asian recording artist to have a number-one song on the chart. It was also one of only 13 or so songs sung entirely in a language other than English to be a hit in the US.
I remember this song back in 1963. So beautiful, everybody trying to sing it, though nobody understood A word of it!
This is one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written and performed. It is just awe inspiring.
Totally agree Jacqueline. I was nine and learned all the lyrics, but not their meaning. Adults did not like this as the memories of the War were still fresh. Thankfully the rebel DJ's on the Radio played it regularly.
same here
I was 14 the summer this came out and every time I hear it I still can picture the sunny skies and breezes at the town park swimming pool where this must have been played on the jukebox dozens of times everyday. They wore the record out along with Little Stevie Wonders Fingertips Part Two. I still feel 14 every time I hear it, such free and innocent times.
When I am down and just a little depressed this always makes me smile. Music is truly the international language. You don’t have to understand the words in this song. The singer acts it out as he sings. BEAUTIFUL!
May you rest in peace sir..

My favorite lyric in this song is “I look at the sky so my tears don’t fall”.
The man can NOT stop smiling. Even when singing such depressing lyrics.
What is striking about the melody and voice tone is that sounds so joyful in spite of the lyrics of sadness and one of the most beautiful whistling tones I ever heard. Sakamoto's song is a happy memory when I was a kid in elementary school.
This is the Japanese spirit. Admit depressing reality, keep your face to the stars and put depression in the shadows.
Always walking forward, even when you cant stop crying. Shiawase is waiting above the sky.
Better than Prozac imho.
But he died tragically 1985 in a plane crash.
