I'm 47 and owned a car years ago that only had an am radio in it. The only station I could pull 8n was a local station that played music from the 40s through the 60s. I can still remember where I was driving when I first heard this song. Awesome song and the english translation is good as well.

This song reminds me of my father. It was playing on the radio as we drove home from Church in the last summer of 1965. He really liked this song, and I did to. Later that year he lost his life in Vietnam. When I hear this beautiful song I can remember a treasured shared memory between a father and his son.

So he was a diabetic because hi liked hamburger of McDonald's.
      Moreover,
Now my father is warrant officer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. And my father joined operation Gulf Dawn with U.S. Navy in Persian Gulf on1991. It is my father's good memory.

As it happens I studied it very carefully (after some two years learning J) and took it to a karaoke session they put on at the training centre. I sang it to a ROOM full of J-people!! Only stuffed up one bit. It was well received (or they were terribly polite!!)

@@zeldasmith6154 Yes, they did! The Japanese people have a whole different take on anyone who tries. The expression 'gamba-ta!' means "do your best!" - and public admiration is for *that* fact, not for winning or for a perfect end-product.

This artist,Kyu Sakamoto, died as a passenger on Japan Airlines Flight 123 in 1985. The pilots tried everything but a sudden loss of hydraulic pressure doomed the plane. An announcement was by the pilot and at that point many of the passengers began writing notes/letters to loved ones. They all knew they were going to die. Ten minutes later the plane went down. Out of 509 passengers, only 4 survived.

This international hit sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Released in 1961 in Japan, then 1963 in the USA.
The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings.
The title "Sukiyaki," used in English-speaking countries, has nothing to do with the lyrics.

There is an underlying context to the song-
"Ue o Muite Arukō" (pronounced [ɯe o mɯite aɾɯkoꜜː]) was written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall, with the verses describing his memories and feelings. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from participating in the 1960 Anpo protests against the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, expressing his frustration and dejection at the failed efforts to stop the treaty. However, the lyrics were purposefully generic so that they might refer to any lost love.

Dear Jim McGee, the unfortunately named "Sukiyaki Song" is one of my favorite songs of all time. My little daughter (at the time) and I sang it at my Japanese mother's funeral. I have other video versions, but yours is really exceptional. It was fun and hip with your modern out-takes at the beginning, liked the American band out-takes; and by the end, you touched my kokoro (heart, mind, spirit) with your traditional film out-takes. Majestic Fujiyama and sakura trees. Your intricate timing and inter-lacing with key punch editing/transitions are beyond the pale. The kid sliding in the snow with his dad, the dancers throughout, etc. My favorite short film of all time is now your film. My favorite word in the Japanese language is "Yugen." It means a bittersweet longing for the past. You captured It in your work. Plus the Now. The Japanese language has no future tense. Domo arigato-gozaimashita. Annie OQT

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG. I always have even as a kid. It always makes me cry.I don't know why. Maybe it has a lot of minor chords in it. The simple Japanese version isstill the best version in my opinion.

I understand that when this wonderful song was released in the states that the title was changed to Sukiyaki from the true title which was hard to pronounce in English. (Ue O Muite)
It is such a beautiful tune about a very sad topic. He was a wonderful man and singer. May God rest his soul.

I Love This Song and video ! I was a young kid when this song was a big hit way back when. Still, I listen to the soothing melody and see the imagery that always makes me feel a little better even when I am down. This song will cheer up anyone. I learned that the words tell about a broken romance, but I prefer to simply apply my own thoughts to the sounds and sights that always delight. Peace on Earth to Everyone I Pray !

A great video! Regarding the song, I bought a 45 of it in the spring of 1963. I played it a lot for a while, but life went on and I forgot about it. In 1994, I was driving up to Sacramento on Sunday mornings and had breakfast at a bar/restaurant then owned by its Nisei bartender. The bar was filled with incredible baseball memorabilia! The food was good and fairly priced. Many of the customers were Nisei, some of them complaining about the tacky ceiling paint (and it was tacky). But this record got played a lot on the jukebox, and I fell in love with it again. It's a great record!
