    About the handling, I played the PS2 version and my memory may be fuzzy but I remember the controls being pretty tight. You could easily pull off long power slides that were so precise you could still dodge traffic while doing them. I may be getting it confused with 2 though.

    Burnout copied a lot from the Konami game, Thrill Drive.
    But its still my favourite Burnout game, because of how difficult it is, and giving the option to drive a bus or tow truck in a race.
    ColorShedProductions wonders why anyone would want to drive them, I say for the challenge, and its not something you get to see much in races, driving a big vehicle in a race.

    I used the music in this game as a blueprint for a class in my college course. If you look up the OST for this game you'll see that there are some unused tracks I believe that were based in Tokyo? I really would love to see how those tracks were meant to turn out but at least we have the music for them to listen to. That horrible looping of the sounds must've really taken away from your experience I imagine. I played it on PS2 when i was a lot younger then Gamecube where I eventually completed the game in a little over 2 hours. It's kinda a big part of my childhood along with Need For Speed Underground.

    Kinda disappointing that you didn’t mention Thrill Drive, an arcade racing game developed by Konami that influenced the Burnout series. Without Thrill Drive, there would be no Burnout.
    Other than that, excellent review!

  • @thatmotorfreak
    @thatmotorfreak 5 лет назад +3

    This particular game was actually based on an old arcade racer by Konami called "Thrill Drive". It's pretty clear that they took a lot of design elements from that game from the generic car line-up, the yellow caution signs, the bumps on the Interstate track, and even the use of the Impact font. They even wanted to add some Tokyo-based tracks and police chases but ended up on the chopping block. Criterion (or at least one of their devs) actually approached Konami at one point to make a home port of Thrill Drive; but Konami didn't show much interest.
    Anyway, can't wait to see you share your thoughts on Burnout 3 :)

    As another commenter has mentioned, this game bears quite a close similarity in a number of areas to Konami's "Thrill Drive" Arcade series (the first released in 1998, and the second in 2001). You drive a small selection of generic cars through traffic dangerously, and crashes result in a dynamic camera angle showing the crash again. I've only played any of them once; Thrill Drive 2 at an arcade many years ago. I vaguely remember this horrifying scream playing whenever you crashed; it made me want to avoid doing it xD!

  • @JamesPound
    @JamesPound 3 года назад +1

    Maybe you had to be a kid at the time, but the mixture of arcade and realism in this game was what made it really addictive. The levels of traffic, design of the environments and intensity of the car crashes were unprecedented, and hooked me as a young person. I didn't play much of the championship mode, but just endlessly replayed single races. It's not as fun if you're trying really hard to progress through the game, but playing it just to race and have a good time and see some crazy crashes, there was nothing else like it.
    I fondly remember the first time my car flipped off a cliff, out of bounds, during a crash. I was blown away that it was even possible.

    they were trying to emulate the gameplay of a konami racing game called "thrill drive". If you compare the first 2 games in each series side by side you'll see similar elements between the 2, even down to the UI. they planned on adding pedestrians into burnout much like thrill drive but the idea was scrapped in development, probably to keep the game from getting an exclusive ESRB or equivalent software rating.

    6:53 - Funny you say this, because there was at least one map that was being developed for the game, but got scrapped before development ended. It was supposed to be a Hong Kong-esque track. They would eventually make a Hong Kong-esque track in later games; in particular: Dockside in Burnout 3: Takedown and Central City in Burnout Revenge.
    So yeah, your suspicions were correct. Sucks that we never got to see that track make it into the final game. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, at least we did get a couple of locations based on that city later down the line.

Burnout 2 was so much fun. And then Burnout 3 happened which really polished the gameplay up and turned the dial to 11.
    And then Revenge came out and it was ok. In my opinion, it was a step back from 3. My main complaint was how dark and hard to see everything was. I haven’t played Paradise yet, but it looks nice. Not sure how I feel about open world Burnout, though.

    One inspiration for Burnout you forgot to mention, and it is probably because it is not very well known today and most cabinets have been destroyed (with two US boards know to still exist), is Konami's scared straight street racing arcade title, Thrill Drive. This game is kinda effed up honestly with it having a mature and general audience mode which disables things like blood splatter coming from your driver, whether your driver gets flung through the windshield during a crash, ambulance/police sirens going off after the crash is over with police sometimes even pulling up, totalling the damages created by the collision, flashing a banner mentioning whether the crash resulted in any fatalities, and this is also without mentioning the fact the game allowed mowing down pedestrians mid race right up until launch because, as an anonymous Konami dev put it in an interview, it just felt in poor taste and wrong with the entire team just wanting to forget they had even toyed with that concept during the game's development. The point of Thrill Drive was illustrating the dangers of street racing to arcade goers with it painting the picture of a fast and fun arcade racer, so long as you were doing well, but, as soon as you have your first crash, the game gives you tonal whiplash showing your driver's face flash on screen during the moment of impact, changing from upbeat and sunny to a dark an ominous sky with music to match, and illustrating the horrific mess you just created in the name of "fun." Food for thought, that one and even weirder that this game most likely served as major direct inspiration for Burnout, though, never officially confirmed (watch gameplay and you'll see why so many have made this conclusion, and, hell, you should see some of the cut content pulled from the Burnout 3 demo like the creepy sound effects pulled from the aftertouch system, the early showcase video where it cycles through car crashes in engine trying to illustrate the engine's realism with creepy post crash sound effects overlayed as if you were surveying a car crash scene, or the fact one of it's working titles was Burnout 3: See You In Hell as well as Burnout 3: Crash & Burn).
    Edit: This (ruclips.net/video/Ymw7DQzCdq0/видео.html), this (ruclips.net/video/HO9Fwmk1beg/видео.html), and I think this (ruclips.net/video/35lc-tM9KeY/видео.html) is where some of this info came from while I found the developer interview linked as a citation I think on Wikipedia or an article on the game on an arcade cabinet tracking and archiving site, I don't remember which one honestly.

    One of the things I liked about this game that the rest of the series doesn't replicate is the presentation of the crashes. When you crash, the HUD suddenly disappears with the accident being shown two or three times in different camera angles. While Burnout 2 featured more detailed crash physics, the presentation of said crashes doesn't have as much dramatic OOMPH as Burnout 1.

    I remember first hearing about Burnout in the old Nintendo and gaming magazines (IGN, GamePro) and got it a little while after release for the Gamecube.
    It was a different and other than the lack of cars / tracks was good for what it provided. It seemed like a demo of what could be and I thought it would be better if they amped up the action.
    Sure enough they did and the rest is history.

    I scrolled through the comments, and I’m unsure if anyone has mentioned this yet, I didn’t see a comment about it anyway but didn’t have time to read every single one, but the reason this game was rated “teen” or “mature” in Australia may have simply been for “mild lyrics” which isn’t unusual for the early 2000’s. A lot of games in North America received a teen rating solely for that reason. Great review though. Just doing a bit of back-catalogue today on your channel.

    Oh man, you saying that the meter would refill if you could hold the whole burnout boost without crashing into anything confirms my perplexed thrill-seeking 12-year old self noticing that same thing, but never being able to confirm it. Burnout was the first game I purchased for my Nintendo Gamecube back in 2002.
    Coming from a Nintendo 64 rather than a Playstation, I didn't realize that a memory card would be needed to save progress in Burnout on Gamecube. So, I played the first few tracks over and over and over again for a few months before my parents bought me a Memory Card. I tried keeping the Gamecube on overnight to make more progress, but my Dad was a scientist, and very conscious of electricity usage, so he made sure all electronic devices besides alarm clocks were turned off every night. XD
    I still feel like the first Burnout in the series was the best... The 2nd had some nice crash modes, but it got way more arcadey in the wrong ways after that.

    Good review. Burnout 1 isn't a bad game but it's not much more than a prototype for the sequels. 2 is my personal favorite as I feel it's got the best mix of destruction and skill based racing. Seriously the first time you manage to boost chain your way through the whole race is a thing of beauty. Most people like 3 better but that was a little destruction heavy and less skill based for my taste. Either way it's still an excellent game.
    Burnout paradise just sucks.

There's nothing less Burnout-y than a game where you have to pause it every 45 seconds to check your map to make sure you're going the right way, while you have 0 opponents anywhere around you because they all took a different route. And showtime mode was just a bad joke after the great crash modes of the previous games.

    Also that van between the two tunnels in oncoming traffic is something that comes up only if you're leaving the AI cars for dead. One thing I noticed as I was going through that race just getting my times down. basically just use boost through the whole freeway section before those tunnels and it'll show up. It doesn't come up if you're slower or the AI are closer to you.
