    One thing in an interview the lady who plays the therapist said that there was so much extemporaneous acting between Anthony Mackie and Sebastián Stan there was hours of footage they did not use in the couple therapy scene. The actors are such good friends and they play off of each other so well it was hard to get the right tone for the scene.

    I love how their trust naturally grows over the series. I immediately noticed how Bucky refused to share his nightmares with his therapist, but when Sam asks about it, he answers truthfully without hesitation. Bucky isn’t so proud that he won’t admit he’s wrong and apologize for it. He’s a good man at heart.

    One thing that really struck me with those scenes in the police station was the apparent conflicting priorities of the therapist. She's giving honest helpful advice to Bucky that "nobody gets hurt," which seems to be that he should avoid violent situations. Yet as far as the government are concerned, her mandate seems to be to get Bucky into a space where he can be functional to go back in the field. It does leave me wondering if they'll develop that further later on where she priorities what's best for him over what the people paying her bills want.

    As a veteran I can relate to this friendship. I have some members I served with I consider brothers, and defiantly remember having words and rough times. But its something special when you went through tough times with someone that creates a really strong bond. It allows you to be more open and responsive cause you can relate to their pain.

  • @rogericafort
    @rogericafort 3 года назад +53

    Yes, it did appear from the couples therapy scene that the therapist did not have to work that hard, as both people seem to have enough of a bond that they weren't "cold," confrontational or throwing things at each other. If they were fighting more bitterly the meeting would have been much harder. So the film therapist should have been reinforcing the communication with "did you hear him?" comments. Bucky had already been through sessions for months, so it's not surprising that he opened up more readily.

    One thing I would like to add: both of them mentioned Steve, a topic neither of them really talked about since probably Endgame. The shield was both their way of finally talking about him. They do admit they miss Steve in the final episode (indirectly) and put it to rest almost instantly, a nice end to their question of who they are without him reminding them.

    • @dragonwings36
      @dragonwings36 3 года назад +21

      Honestly most people I know loathe her because she's terrible at her job - especially with letting everyone in the police station know that Bucky's in therapy and then forcing Sam into the therapy session (which she didn't have the right to do). Plus the notebook thing - such a trigger for Bucky and yet ugh.

    One thing - I believe - about the aggressiveness of the therapist (taking his phone and calling him out on the lack of friends, etc) in this show is that she's former military, dealing with other former military clients, likely dealing with PTSD. She's more gruff and belligerent because that's a type of communication that soldiers understand. It's a form of bonding, and it's not limited to "guy talk" or anything, either. It's just...a different form of relationship.
    Now, I don't know if this is accurate to reality, as far as how therapists work, even dealing with military members. But that is, again, I believe, the characterization they're shooting for with her scenes.

    • @dragonwings36
      @dragonwings36 3 года назад +17

      Honestly you should check out Nicque Marina's (she's former military - air force) videos about the therapist. Yes it's technically accurate on how military therapists work but also - and this is important - they're not good at their job and neither is this fictional therapist.

    • @rileykepfer4294
      @rileykepfer4294 2 года назад

      I kind of agree with that, having been in the military myself. that technique keeps him coming back and making progress. if she went more "by the book," he would stop opening up to her because he would be uncomfortable. the way she talks to him is familiar ground.

    • @englishlady9797
      @englishlady9797 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@dragonwings36 I mean my main objection to her is that when Bucky finally opens at the end of the second therapy scene she doesn't follow it up at all. Sam brushes it off quite callously, and you can tell it upset Bucky who ends up leaving the room implying he wants to hurt somebody.

  • @richardbrown3055
    @richardbrown3055 3 года назад +9

    For me, the premise of this show is not about the two becoming friends, these two became instant friends the moment they met, and have spent every moment since denying it as loudly as they can, this show is about the pair of them dealing with their respective issues, while even more loudly denying that they have reached best friend status.
    As for the Therapist calling out Bucky on his cellphone, I would assume her approach has some Adlerian influences, where pointing and confronting clients on the inconsistencies between what they do and say helps to maintain the authenticity of the established relationship. Personally I’ve found it especially effective with clients who have military backgrounds as they tend to distrust people they don’t feel are being forthright with them.
    One of the other pieces to consider is the character Sam is himself a trained counsellor, who used to work with veterans. It can also be said to be a good portrayal of how counsellors can struggle to heed the same advice they would give their clients, and so need people to fill that role in their lives.

    • @GeorgiaDow

    Good point you make about Sam supporting Bucky when he doesn't agree with visiting Zemo. Bucky later returns the favor by defending Sam's choice to try therapy on Karli even though he's not convinced she can be saved. He says they're not partners but it's easy to see why John doesn't believe him.

    • @englishlady9797
      @englishlady9797 7 месяцев назад

      I mean that's probably also due to the fact that pretty much everyone thought Bucky was past saving too. Perhaps he saw a bit of himself in her. Although there's no real parallels. Karli is an incredibly selfish individual who willingly kills because she narcissistically believes her cause is right. Bucky was a conscripted soldier who killed to protect his friends in the war, and later was forced into it against his will.

    What has been overlooked so far is that Sam did try to talk to Bucky, but Bucky was ignoring him. There is no way he would not have discussed the shield with Bucky before giving it up, if they were on speaking terms. In my head canon, he spoke to Rhodey after Bucky wasn't responding. Rhodey too thinks Sam giving up the shield is a mistake, but that's ok. Sam needed communication, not validation.
    And when Walker is declared Cap, Bucky shows up angrily demanding answers. Some nerve! Don't get me wrong, I adore Bucky (even more than Sam) and his journey up to admitting his mistakes was beautiful to watch. But Sam is just more empathetic and patient to wait for Bucky to get to the place where he can accept help. All this while dealing with his own demons and saving the world.

I think Bucky really wanted to be friends with Sam, he just has no clue how to approach it, so Sam saying "We'll never see each other again" really hurt him.

    What do you say about the red journal she‘s having? I know many therapists have their notebooks but especially with Bucky‘s history shouldn’t she be a little more careful with it? In the very first episode she gets it out and slams it on her thigh a little to aggressively which is a 100% trigger for Bucky‘s PTSD. In the past every time someone got out a red book he lost control over his life and was forced to kill.

    I think in the therapy scene, when Bucky says "if he was wrong about you maybe he was wrong about me", actually shows how low Bucky feels for what he has done as the Winter Soldier, even though he didn't have a choice. The one thing that gives him hope is that Steve never gave up on him and always saw the good in him. So he fears that - if Steve was wrong about deeming Sam worthy of being the next Captain America - Steve may also have been wrong with believing in Bucky to be a good man.

I know that they're play of earlier buddy cop work that featured no nonsense style therapists, but it a bit much. If spoke to my clients especially the ones known trauma I would be potential looking at ethics discussions or mandatory retraining depending on the circumstances. As funny as certain bits of the couples session where I was extremely uncomfortable how she basically guilted Sam into the session in an interrogation room after been profiled by the police. Group work in my experience is only productive if all party feel secure, willing, and ready and the set up for that session seems like none of those things especially for Sam. Also, I gone back over the scene several times now I am still not sure who the session was to be for, because she is Bucky's therapist, but she ropes Sam in and calls it a couples session, but her focus still be on Bucky and his needs, which also isn't a great set up for group work and making sure everyone feels heard.

I know the therapy is court mandated (which also isn't often quality care) and she is a veteran but I know several people that serviced or were with the VA and now do private practice with pro bono or sliding scale work with other veterans and other populations have issues access care (though one would hope Bucky got his backpay). I know this is an older video, but I would love to see a breakdown of John Walker and how his mental state changed throughout the show. It's clear the pressure of being Captain America is weighing heavily on his shoulders and he wants to do good by his country and its people, but failure after failure starts getting to him, especially when he lost that fight to the Dora Milaje. He said "they don't even have powers" or something along those lines and I could tell his confidence was crushed. He could take losing to a group of people with super strength, but not to a non-powered person. Not to mention it was a non-powered woman he lost to and John grew up in a society that only saw women as weak. (This is just my speculation.)
    He became increasingly unhinged after that. Killing the member of the Flag Smashers in broad daylight, not mentally handling his dishonorable discharge very well, and then his outright turn to crazy mode when he ignored the court when they told him to return the shield, continued to use it and the suit, and kept yelling "I am Captain America! I am Captain America!"
    The shift of John's psyche from "I just want to help my country" to "I have to be the best" is worth exploring in my opinion.

    These videos are great. You know in ancient times elders would tell tales to children about the gods, mythical creatures, legends and so on. Though they were fiction many times there would be life lessons in the stories for the children to learn from. You analyzing super hero movies and shows like this is a real great way to teach people, especially youth, about therapy and related topics. I hope you keep it up. I wish Bucky would listen to Sam. To me, as much as I love Bucky as a character (he's defenitely one of my favourites and one of the most interesting in the MCU), he was a little bit selfish in the therapy session and I think he's trying to measure his self-worthiness on Sam when he says that if Steve was wrong about Sam then he was wrong about him too. It's not fair to Sam that he's doing so, his healing journey and his self esteem should not depend on Sam. Sam has plenty of reasons to not want that shield (first of all, Steve didn't even ask Sam if he wanted it, he just kinda dumped it on Sam without considering what it could mean for him) and not wanting that shield doesn't make him less of a good person. I understand that Bucky has gone through a lot, that he's alone and that the shield is the only thing he has left of Steve, but he didn't even try to listen to Sam and I hope that as the show goes on he learns to listen as they become friends. Overall, I agree, their dynamic is so adorable, I love the banter! (I apologise if my English isn't perfect)

      I think they would've needed to stay in that session for just 10 more minutes or so. I agree that it's important for Bucky to listen to Sam. I felt like he was starting to think about what Sam said, judging from his quiet and looking down. It must be extremely hard for Bucky to get out of his traumatised mind and change perspectives. After all Steve was the one who supported him no matter what and now he has to deal with his loss (and therefore lots of support) on top of the trauma. Props to Sam for still being patient and compassionate although he has a lot to deal with himself.

    • @PalmotTaiga
      @PalmotTaiga 3 года назад +3

      @@dundiesplan9085 I agree. Sam has a lot of patience, and I think that he genuinely cares about Bucky, he looks out for him and constantly asks him if he's okay, and Bucky clearly cares for him too, since he does the same exact thing. I think they just need time to learn to understand each other and learn how to communicate, specially Bucky.

    They both have a ways to go, and I don't think it will be all neatly wrapped up in a bow by the end of the show like people expect, just like people over expected what was to happen by the end of Wandavision.
    BUT what I DO expect is for them to both grow together and learn to deal with whatever shit they are dealing with both apart and together, and for it to set up them taking over Captain America and White Wolf instead of Falcon and Winter Soldier.
    And maybe, in growing together, they will decide that they are a team (even if they don't call it that) and they will hold the legacy of Cap together, even if Sam 'officially' takes the title. It would be a neat way for them to work in the idea of them both being Cap as they were in the comics, to have them working together as a Cap team rather then separate Caps at separate times.

    I think we can cut the therapist some slack, because what we see aren't complete sessions. They are edited not only for time, but for narrative reasons. And by edited I not only mean in post, but even in the writing phase. It would drag on a lot if we heard her jumping in and controlling the situation every time, so I think we can assume she did it and that's why Sam and Bucky know what to do, we just didn't see it.

If Sam had not been who he was, refusing to turn over his ID was about to make the situation even uglier.

    I watched this series and from the very beginning I did not like this therapist. She seemed to be very directive to me, dominating and roasting Bucky about his phone. At times she mentioned his negative things, e.g. he has no friends, no family, he is 100 years old. Even her tone of voice was not friendly and respectful at all. What do you think about it?
    Maybe it was her unusual method of motivating Bucky to pull himself together and move forward but I didn't receive any warm emotions from her. She seemed to be tired of Bucky's "stupid" or "childish" problems, as youcan hear at 6:44 when she put a lot of strong stress at "DON'T". Maybe she had just a occupational burnout.

But coming from a military background with her own trauma, she speaks Bucky’s language and his truthful with him(because he doesnt trust anyone, except for Sam). I actually like this therapist, just for the fact that she's doing what's best for him as opposed to what's best for the government’s interest.
