i think it’s also important to talk about how in the moment of “you weren’t really my sister”, yelena retorts with an equally hurtful line to natasha by saying “and the avengers aren’t really your family.” and then soon followed by “i’m not the trained killer that little girls call their hero”. and if we look into natashas past throughout the avengers and movies, we see how much her guilt weighs on her. proving that this line was and is extremely hurtful. what’s interesting about this conversation between the two is that all of the statements made, are true. and that’s what is so hurtful about them. brilliant writing.
You beat me to it. That interaction between them was definately some sisterly jabs in the only way that family/siblings can hurt each other. Cause you see it on Natasha's face that what Yelena said did strike a big nerve.
I love this movie solid 8 out of 10 I really like the way the taskmaster twist was used it made sense in the context of this movie that taskmaster is literally her past coming back to haunt her and she has to confront her so smart man
The one thing that upsets me is this movie should have been 10 years ago and it really should be the sequel to a Black Widow origin movie. Otherwise I loved it and it brings me to tears. The movie is getting some slap back in the comic community but it tends to fall on misogynistic points and a change of the Taskmaster character from the comics but overall it is getting good reviews. I think it is going to be important for Marvel Studios going forward to get the female fandom more involved in the story telling. I think one of the biggest behind the scenes issues was that this movie really needed more female writers involved. The one joke about PMS that Red Guardian said was written by a man and when the director and actors saw it they could not believe it was in he script. That is why Yelena and Natasha clapped back so hard in the scene because they improvised it in. So in a way the lack of female writer input may have helped the female director and two female stars improvise a much better scene.
So good! Loved the movie and the pain and the joy of the family dynamic really made it for me. I wonder how much that had to do with ScarJo being a producer and getting to help shape and mold the story? Like you said, it had a lot of really believable character beats to it... in between the fighting... and posing! Can we get a Loki finale video next???
This is pretty awesome. And I’m surprised you didn’t bring up how they sat in the same place at the dinner table as they did in the beginning dinner scene.
@@GeorgiaDow i feel like you could also react to supernatural scenes especially these The season 8 finale when dean stops sam from closing the gates of hell That season 9 scene i,m proud of us Season 14 i believe in us Season 4 dean talking about his time in hell And season 2 finale when sam dies in dean arms and dean what am i suppose to do
black widow (film) has so much psychological issues i could talk about it all night...love that film the line that always gets me in this is when yelena mentions to her dad that they ripped out uterus...
Also if you watch infinity war you see Natasha wearing Yelenas vest and touching it when people got snapped, probably worrying if yelena got snapped as well
This was sooooo good and I loved how you pointed out their sisterhood and how powerfully that was captured. And I know you were focusing this on family but I hoped you would talk about the ways it also depicted abuse as a key secondary theme through the Widows and how Winston really acted like an abuser in so many little ways (the invading personal space, the threatening raised hand that made Natasha flinch, the confidence in his power over her and his dismissal of all the girls he'd robbed of their agency). I thought that also fit with the family theme in the sense that abuse is most often within families and from trusted adults, but I'm also wondering if you're planning to do another video on that? Thanks for all you do!
Yes I think abuse is such a large subject and so many layers it would not be able to be done justice but you are correct and it is another aspect to who they are and who they become
The "Black Widow Therapist Reacts"- I saw what you did there ;) I actually watched this earlier, but I'm still going to watch it in theaters next week (even pre-pandemic I was not really enamored of opening weekend crowds.) I felt that pain for her sister when Natasha said "You weren't really my sister". It was a horrible thing to say in defense of a horrible thing she did because she SHOULD have came back for her sister and let her also play with the cool kid Avengers. As to your question in the description box, I'd say they both are her family. I just wish she had opportunity to blend them in with each other. So great Nat got her family closure before she died, like Tony got his Dad closure before he died. Another wonderful video...I have tears....for so many reasons.
@@GeorgiaDow Very true. I guess I am just too much of a softy. I instinctively knew what Nat's reply was going to be and I wanted to rewind and cover Yelena's ears so she wouldn't be hurt. Lots of times when I'm watching a movie or TV and I see that kind of thing coming, I walk out of the room. Sometimes I just come back for the part where they fix it.
Florence is a fantastic actor. As is Scarlett. And Rachel Weis should have been in it more. She was so maternal even when the government told her it was a job. That ScarJo & Flo became very sisterly while filming showed. Yelena has such great little sister energy and amazing comedic timing. Only Florence could have played her. Black Widow and Yelena are see greatly rooted in childhood trauma but they’re so dehumanized by many and yet (nevertheless!) their humanity prevails.
Late to the party and just wanted to add to the things showing that they actually were a family the song American Pie. "Crimson Dynamo" (😂) is singing it to Yelena right after that scene to show her that he paid attention and still remembers which music she loved. She called it "her song" when they were driving to that small air field.
I love your channel and I love this video. While I was engrossed in the sister relationship when I saw this film, upon rewatching these scenes, others, and some deleted content I've become wrapped up in exploring the surrogate parents feelings. Melaina obviously harbors feelings for these children and this man. A victim of the Red Room herself, being forced to spend such an extended time playing house that she couldn't help but be changed by this once in her lifetime experience. The constant physical closeness alone for 3 years changed her profoundly. Even if not in romantic love (who knows if she understands that) this extended physical relationship with one man is probably the closest to it she knows. The time with the two girls, one whom you can relate to from your own red room background. The other a rare example of an untainted soul, something she's rarely interacted with in a nonviolent or corrupted way. Both her and Natasha could even watch Yeleana and get a glimpse of what their lives could have been while playing along with this innocent fantasy themselves. Alexei also demonstrates how this time marked him, even though he complained about the assignment at the time. For an action film (a little too much action and not enough dialogue scenes for me) this really has a plethora of soft touches exploring the characters humanity.
I loved the breakdown you should do older Marvel movies and character relationship breakdowns between the characters throughout all the films. For example since this is the Black Widow movie you could start with Natasha's relationships to the other characters throughout the MCU and then maybe do the rest of the major characters.
There's an additional bit of context in the bike scene, if you speak Russian. Yelena calls her "suchka", meaning bitch, bu the normal way to say "bitch" is "suka". "Suchka" adds an affectionate diminutive suffix to the word, so she's calling her a bitch, but affectionately.
I was waiting for this! I'm glad to see your reaction about the movie, it's heartwarming to see you enjoy the siblings bonding in this film. Now If possible, please give the Superhero Tv Series Jupiter's Legacy a watch. Oh the drama when your parents are Superheroes who cares more about saving the world than raising you. They have deep family problem i'd like you to access.
IDK if it was Scarjo, or the directors, but that's something I always loved about Nat, being a "Poser." it's a nod to the comics, and the spineless way she stood in the background of every shot. To show off her butt, boob, and face all at once, the Black Widow Pose was definitely a thing, in the comics. She's a femme fatale, so it kinda comes with her MO, but regardless. What ScarJo brought all her own is that little smile, that isn't quite a smile, but you can see her start to, then cut it off. At the beginning of CA: TWS, when she comes to pick up "A fossil," and Falcon makes a high speed pass. "How you doin?" "Hey." That smile.
The Yelena vs. Natasha fight was not necessarily about them fighting their problems out...that fight scene was because neither one of them was sure if the other was REALLY STILL BRAINWASHED. If either was still brainwashed, then they could be faking surrender in order to get close and make a killing blow. To stop defending yourself against another Black Widow, agents trained since childhood to decieve and betray trust (not to mention their lack of free-will), would be an EXTREMELY risky gamble with your life. It had little, if anything, to do with familial squabbles and more to do with finding out if they could trust each other to not stab the other in the neck as soon as they let their guard down. Other than that, I agree with everything you said and love these MCU videos you make.
I would have to disagree with you there. Even before I watched Georgia Dow's reaction I realized the fight was because of the resentments Yelena had that Nat knew where justified. Yelena had every right to feel that Nat should have come for her, because Nat pulled a gun to protect Yelena when Yelena was just 6. Yelena probably pictured Nat busting in and taking her to the west time and time again. Then when Yelena saw Nat as an Avenger...a superhero with powerful allies and connections, she no doubt thought...okay...ANY time now. And it STILL didn't happen. She was hurt and she gave up on the dream and went from hero worship to epic resentment. The simplest explanation is usually the right one...and yours is a bit...convoluted. Then there's the fact that they DID stop defending themselves and declared a truce. Which makes your theory even more unlikely...because then one would still have been able to follow through on the kill. The kind of fight you're talking about only would have ended with one of them knocked out, and tying up the other so they could talk in peace.
I think that vest was left the Avengers compound when she got the new suit to go to Vormir, I'm not sure how much they salvaged. But it could've been destroyed in the airstrike.
So much trauma. OMG, unimaginal traumas, like Yelena being abandoned by her "Family," then puppeted around by a controlling mastermind, and forced to kill. Yeah, let's just talk about the family dynamic. Not, like. You know, Taskmaster, what she is, and how she got that way. Let's keep it light.
