I would say in general, a sloppy gliss. is easy on the piano. However, to get them as crisp, clean and colorful as he did is INSANE. I mean he slides up to that last note perfectly every time while keeping everything artistic and beautiful. It is difficult enough to gliss, up to a note without hitting a finger on any other keys without trying to keep things bright and beautiful!
Then there are octave glissandos which are 50x harder. I can't get my fingers to keep the perfect spacing... ever...
Alec H oh my word! Forgot about those!
@@alech9418 Just don't bother anymore, its impossible for normal people to do it beautifully.
Just doing sloppy glisses one after another hurt like the devil, imagine doing those beautiful crisp light octave glisses again and AGAIN AND AGAIN AHH MY HANDS HURT THINKING ABOUT IT
Ikr, for some of us who have learnt classical music for years, it's not that hard to hit the notes. But to make it clear and bright, that's another level. And dont forget the dynamic and atmosphere you give. Maybe that's what make them pros
I'm Chinese, I never liked Lang Lang growing up, always thought all his exaggerated gestures and facial expressions are unnecessary even embarrassing, until I was able to truly appreciate how great he masters the piano. He has done some fun reality shows in China in recent couple of years, I'm glad I could get to know him better through the show, Lang Lang is actually a very humble, pure, genuine, down-to-earth guy with a warm personality, he's not showing off or being dramatic with all the "unusual" movements/faces, it's just when he plays, he's so happy and passionate. Yes this! 😭
Exactly. And when you do it on a hard keys piano? Like, mine is a studying one, so it has really hard keys weight. Doing a glissando means "peeling off your skin".
Yes! A gliss can draw blood!
The glissando is technically easy, but it REALLY hurts. Your knuckles are horizontally smashing into every single key. You'll have some nice bruises after practicing it.

Try glissing with your fingernails on the way up and thumbnail on the way down (for right hand), it's much smoother, easier to control, and hurts much much less. :)

As a pianist and violinist, I can say that a glissando is certainly more painful than a tremolo.
As a fellow pianist and violinist, I agree with you.
As another fellow pianist and violinist, I have no opinions
As a pianist and flautist (instead of violinist), a piano glissando is a lot more painful and brutal than the woodwind version.
fun fact: "inappropriate clapping" is a modern invention. Mozart wrote about how much he loved it when audiences clapped in the middle of his concerts.
Ooh that's interesting
In orchestra in middle school, my teacher would intentionally make us rest for a little bit longer so that the audience would clap and cheer, then we would all laugh then continue😂😂
There asre many things in classical music world, that are modern shit inventions.
The entire "don't clap during concerts" is another elitist invention of the modern day. Please, tell me, why can't I show my appreciation during a concert in between movements? Why can't a saxophone be in an orchestra? Why can't I dress casual to a concert?
Tradition.
But fck tradition, really. Just have fun. Clap in the middle of a solo to assert dominance. Show up to your concert in fishnets and a pink hoodie. Write your own tenor sax part into an existing symphony and play that.

"One for the classical, one for the audience, one for the TV" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA😂😂😂😂😂
As a currently practicing pianist, there is a lot of actual legitimacy to the gestures. As Brett said, it's mostly a byproduct of what you are playing. It is often easier to reposition your hand (depending on the piece, anyway) when you do crazy elegant stuff like that too, so it has an actual purpose beyond just looking like you're feeling REALLY extravagant and passionate about whatever you're playing. It's also an excellent way to release tension from your hands so you don't end up carrying it over to the next notes.
Sidenote, that rendition of Chopsticks was beautiful and I can't believe he was able to get such expression out of such a simple melody. The level of control he has with all of his muscles is insane. The glissing was also :ok_hand:.

Well, as a classically trained musician myself, the museum culture has been deeply ingrained in classical performance. Lang Lang here has definitely brought back music (i.e. classical music for that matter) back to the people. He has made it more inclusive. In contrast to how we classically trained musicians cringe at wrong-timing of clapping. Obviously Lang Lang has engaged the audience excellently the fact that they could not help but clap. This is real music for real communities! Thank you Lang Lang for making classical music playing relevant and enjoyable for a wider range of audience :-)

Fun fact from my music history professor: when Liszt used to perform it was very common for people to cheer in the middle like this, much more similar to rock concerts than classical performances. He ate it up, he was a brilliant performer and Lang Lang's performing/playing style is actually reminiscent of Liszt's. However, at some point later in his career Liszt got fed up with it and would actively shush audience members if they started to applaud during his pieces. So, Liszt is one of the main reasons why it's common etiquette to be silent during classical performances.
Funnily enough later in lizst life he went to a concert and he hadn't been too one in a while before that. And he went to a concert and he cheered but everyone looked at him weird
Glissandos on the piano are such a pain (literally). They’re not necessarily *hard,* it takes a lot of practice to find-tune it to be able to do one without brutally murdering your hand 😅. They’re harder than you think, that’s for sure.
Doing a glissando in piano isn’t hard, but doing a PERFECT one like that is demanding. The even speed and equal pronunciation and volume for each note is hard, and doing it quickly three times in a row is......maybe it is more for the effects, but it’s not just like, easy. Lang Lang seemed so effortless, too......
苏折 if I try and do glissandos quickly like that then either it gets stuck half way up or it hurts my fingers lol, he just recovers and then proceeds to repeat it twice perfectly, big respect lmao
Yeah agreed. Glisses are show-boaty and impressive for an audience but integrating them so easily and crisply is genuinely difficult to pull off
Lang Lang amazes me in his style. In many moments of his playing you look at his wrist and hands and they look a piece of wood. I hear a voice in my ears saying to much tension. Yet his playing shows no tension at all. An oxymoron.
I also find it particularly difficult how he played notes in between the glissandos as well. I often find myself spending a little time finding the next notes to play afterward and it can get a bit hard when my left hand is fully occupied with its own notes to play.
Michelle Zhang yeah the coordination after / in between them are definitely a nightmare🤦🏻♀️Lang Lang did it so well and connected

Oh no Daniel please don’t do it
I knew a guy who interned for Fallon, and he let me know that pretty much every beat of the audiences reaction is trained before the show. They have someone come out and coach them on how to laugh and such. I’m sure the same can be said for many shows like it
The people watching that have little to no musical training only hear the notes. Intonation, articulation, modulation,, emphasis, pitch are things just either don’t know or just don’t care to know what they all are. They just want it to make them feel a certain way or just only to be entertained… It takes some of the enjoyment out of it if you spend the whole performance analyzing. They just want to relax a bit after a crappy day at work. I love when you guys hear or see a mistake or a really difficult part and you immediately look at each other and smile while reaching for the pause as fast as you can.
Oh and the clapping. That might be something artificially added or they light up the “APPLAUSE” light and have the audience clap when instructed. I’m sure they would have the audience noise controlled like they do in “recorded in front of a live studio audience” tv programs.
Remember how in "shrek" during the wedding scene there was a dude with big signs telling ppl when to "laugh" or "aaaw"? Well during classic music performances there should be one to tell them WHEN to clap
Late night shows like _The Tonight Show_ *do* have these audience-instruction signs, as do sitcoms. That's what _Shrek_ was parodying.
There's a _very_ good chance the audience was instructed to clap.
You have to remember that late night TV is basically entirely advertising.
People go on to soft sell something through conversations and performances. Advertisers pay for it by showing overt advertisements between the soft selling. The producers' job is to keep it all engaging enough that the audience at home won't change the channel or fall asleep.
Or at classical performances a casual reminder beforehand:)
This suggestion is gross.

Glissandos on piano are the most painful thing on the earth, I swear
Squid Lover94 Not when I do it.
Then listening to me would be the most painful thing.

It depends on the keys and how you do it though.
One time I played at a bar that had an electric piano with really square key edges.. Ascending glissandos were a no-go. Descending ones I could do with my nail.... I messed one up and straight took a chunk off my thumb.
So yes. They *can* be the most painful thing on earth when the appropriate conditions align..
Yeah I’ve made myself bleed trying them before on crappy keyboards before. But on nice grands like that one I’m sure it’s super smooth.
I did it at the age of 7 for a piano competition. Because my finger movement was not fast enough, I have to do glissando. The result of practicing numerous times is that I was literraly bleeding. My mom found it out when she saw the red dots on the key. That was painful.
Just remember that it is completely acceptable to clap during a “hot” jazz performance. Ragtime is considered the earliest form of jazz and was mostly played in loud speakeasies. Clapping or even shouting during the Joplin piece would be considered a compliment to the performer in this situation.
You can always feel the passion of Lang Lang towards music... it's so beautiful❤️
My piano teacher would always say to the audience before our recital started, "a lot of these pieces have what you think might be an ending, but isn't. So please don't clap until the student stands up and bows." 4:29 Glissandos themselves aren't super difficult on piano. What makes it extraordinary is how light he played the gliss. It's a beautiful effect.
Something like that yeah
Absolutely agree
The only thing is that glissandos are hard because of how painful they are, I once cut my finger open doing them (nothing too bad, but still I cut my finger)
@@sebastianciarfella3061 Tremolos? Im sorry, but id like to know, how do you cut your fingers with tremolos?
@@jesecampos3056 sorry, I meant glissandos I confused myself
I've attended one concert in the US. People were clapping several times during the performance. It was the most uncomfortable concert experience of my life
Oh, you poor dear,
Life’s truly a bitch
You must lead a charmed life
it is also impresive because of how how he controls the pedal. plus playing with such emotion- amazing
Classical:
omF- DID SOMEONE JUST CLAP BETWEEN MOVEMENTS!!??
Jazz:
lmao clap after the solo that's okay
Rock:
HELL YEAH KEEP SCREAMING AND SHOUTING
Evolution of music. You clap harder so we play even louder.
I wish the jazz one was what they did, but they were actually clapping when Lang Lang STARTED playing a tune
I get so triggered when people forget to clap after solos. There's just an awkward silence, and ye be like "these non-jazz musicians, am I right?"
Pop fans:
What is a movement? What is a solo? Oh well, lemme bust out my cellphone to film the entire 3-hour concert.
Grandma: what's that lovely sound on the TV? Turn it up please!
When there is clapping: Turn it down! It's too loud!
Also when an ad plays while watching video on youtube
That arrangement of the piece is written with the glissandos. I don’t think he made them up. I saw him live several years ago. I’ve also seen other world-class performers. Lang Lang is the most polished technically I’ve ever heard. When I heard him, he was certainly the best I’d ever heard, but his performance didn’t move me. His expression has definitely deepened over the years. And, he is quite the showman!
Listen to Glenn Gould and Maria joao Pires^^
Maybe classical music needs an audience that isn’t afraid to make some noise. I used to play with this group that performs high level classical music in bars with noise and people drinking and playing pool, but they also packed the place every time and had a great time. It was an effective way to bring this music out of the conservatory and into unexpected places that inspired energetic and wonderful performances. You could have a string quartet, opera singer, classical guitar, saxophone quartet…basically anything from early music to 20th century experimental music. It was fabulous.
The thing is that classical music was created towards a certain group of people and those people have their culture of how to listen to that music. I do not think that would change any time soon.
But I certainly think classical music can be taken to other audiences.
@@pjbpiano These days, that depends on who is listening. There is definitely the traditional music halls, and you can’t move or make a sound during the performance, but many people are playing this music in much more lively locations and breaking with established traditions. It is helping to bring some life into the genre, especially for younger people.
@@Munchylego yep. But they would still eventually have to learn the traditions that go along with the music. Eventually. Because as we know, this music has lasted this long simply because people preserved it and did not change according to what was popular at the time.
Ling Ling: 40 Hours
Lang Lang: 41 Hours
Yes, chopsticks, twinkle variations and maple leaf rag are barely "classical"
its for the main stream people the classical stuff is awsome
maurmi i hope you know those are not the only pieces he performs..
@@purpsenju5707 Of course I know. My comment was in reaction to the introduction which advocated this for those who are "fans of CLASSICAL music "

TwoSet: *Surprised Pikachu Face*
Violin prodigy: ling ling
piano prodigy: lang lang
Wind instrument prodigy: lung lung
At this point, anything classical music with Twoset's reaction to it is a must.
As a pianist, the fact that he can bring out the melody so clearly and crisply just gives me goosebumps.
Nato NaCl agreed
Lol
it's insane i dont know how he does it

Same. I’m also a pianist too!
I'm just sat here imagining the day we get to watch TwoSet on Fallon, and observe their internalised cringing when the audience starts clapping inappropriately 💀
ariadne They just flip around to the audience in the middle of the piece, point both their bows at the crowd and just say a simple but firm "No".
It’s like he is just playing exercises with one hand and beginning pianist literature with the other
And lang lang was smile the whole time like it was nothing , wow I could never!
Just waiting for *lung lung* to appear.
The saga continues
The question ist just: How long does he practice a day?
39.9 hours a day
lung lung is pretty lazy so he only practices for a little bit, maybe like 70 hours a day?
Until his lungs give out
Lung Lung plays a brass instrument. you can tell, considering how much air we need to actually play our instruments. they have Iron lungs. be like lung lung.
Ling Ling --> Violin
Lang Lang --> Piano
Lung Lung --> Opera singer ?
For the record, those glissandos weren’t “hard” per say, but they hurt like hell

You could see that Lang Lang was just having fun. He was very relaxed.

Mainstream media consumer checklist for piano performance:
☑ Played something I recognize
☑ Didn't play wrong notes
☑ Played fast (clap)
Rather, for the second one, you could easily replace it with "Doesn't mess up horribly" for mainstream audiences.
Not quite my tempo
I think he did play a couple of wrong notes.
@@dmythica yep, i think i also heard him touch a few wrong notes
He played with absolutely perfect control. He doesn't seem off in the slightest.
That twinkle twinkle little star melody in the middle. Exquisite
