I have a 2020 F150 3.5 Ecoboost, it has been making this noise for a couple years. I was never able to locate the rattle but I knew it wasn't the cam phasers. Saw this video and $5.00 later problem solved. Thank you!!
Man thank you!!! This has been bugging me for the longest time. I’m still taking mine into the dealer because I have warranty to see if they can replace the turbo in general, but if it’s not possible I’m definitely going to do this!!! Exact same rattle as mine, so if it fixes it all I will update😎
Thanks for the heads up on this issue. My Colorado Ford dealership gave me a sight unseen estimate of $3,000 to replace the injectors for the "rattle" issue, which as we know is corrupt on their part. My local ace hardware had a close-enough spring: 7/16" width, 5 inches long, that I cut and bent to be 3 1/2" Overall Length. The spring section itself was 2 1/8" long. The 3 1/2" length gave consistent gentle pressure to the gate valve linkage.
Awesome information Dan. I sure appreciate you taking the time to post the spring lengths and sizes. I’m sure that will help out other viewers that are reading this.🤙🏼
Beautiful truck. I’m going to try this on my 2019 3.5L eco lariat. It’s really my only complaint with engine noise. Other than this at startup and on the occasional deceleration, my 100k engine is quiet.
Thank you so much. Sounds like your Lariat is super nice also. 👊🏼 I feel sure it will help with the rattle. I am like you, love our Fords if we can just get rid of these pesky noises. Fortunately I’m now rattle free. Try it and let me know how it works for you. 🍻
I have the same exact rattle on only the driver side turbo. I was actually able to silence the rattle completely by just putting my finger on the wastegate lever, so I know that is the source. However the spring was not enough and I actually tried shortening it to give it more tension. I am thinking about either using a stronger spring or possible more springs at different locations. Or maybe just take it to the dealer since Ford has a technical bulletin for this issue.
Matt, thank you for that info. It sounds like your wastegate is very loose and needs the dealers attention. Please let us know what you find out sir. 👍🏼
I would not do that your wastegate is vacuum activated stock is 9ft/lb its not very much start messing with that and you could be throwing your whole boost system out of whack. the sound your hearing is a circular flap inside that is released by that rod going in and it allows exhaust gasses to bypass it and at low speeds the flap opens up unless you want to rebuild your entire turbo or purchase a new turbo theres no way to possibly silence that for sure...
@@Matt-un8gi my truck has been making a rattle sound for 8 years now doesn't affect performance it's just a sound that I ignore lol. I have done a ton of performance mods so I barely even hear it anyways. Up to you if you want to get it looked at or possibly fixed I would suggest coming up with some excuse as to why you don't like the sound of something that is working perfectly fine.... Pay good money for nice things
I wondered what this noise was on my 2019 Platinum Expedition. Sounded like it was coming from under the truck versus under the hood. Deff gonna try this out.
LOOKING FOR A HERO! Anyone ever successfully used the spring method on a 2016 model? I see the watergate arm but the layout is different and I can’t find anywhere to anchor the spring.
Nice easy mod and great video and details! I don't like that it's pulling the oil line towards unscrewing and could potentially rub eventually springing an oil leak on a hot turbo exhaust housing. Is there a reason you can't add some tension to the arm at the adjustment nut? Does the vehicle then compensate for that when it's warm and change the zero point for the solenoid?
All plausible concerns. I actually haven’t given that a lot of thought. But now that you mention it, I’m sure it will be a good discussion point and others that read this will chime in.
Yo this fixed my problem!! Thank you so much. Only concern is I could only find a smaller spring so a little more tension. Will that mess with the turbos and power?
Thank you for this video, bro. I have a girl F150 and the men hate me. The girls jealous of me. I gotta keep my pimp up!!😂😂😂 can’t lean sounding crazy!!
I give the multi pack part number because many have complained the Lowe’s size doesn’t fit. This way you have many more options within the pack or proper fitment
Thanks Taylor, Mine is a 2018 with 54k miles on it. I keep it garaged and never use it like a truck 🤣. Since it’s the face of my RUclips channel I have to keep it exceptionally clean for the video camera. I appreciate it bro. 🤙🏼
Just looked at my 2015 eco boost. It is not the same setup as the later models. I'm guessing they changed designs somewhere in that time frame. Any suggestions?
Oh wow. I thought the 2015s were all the same. I would do a lot of google searches and I will check as well. I will post back if I get any useful information.
@LivinWith3M yeah,in the case of the flapper disc, its internal, so unfortunately the springs wont help...really sucks to have a brand new truck that sounds horrible on a cold start...its fine after morning start ups,but it still bugs me....hoping ford comes out with a TSB for this soon
My engine is 1.5L ecoboost and make noise little same. It generally makes when cold start but noise reduces after short time, so when engine is oiled. But my noise comes when I put& release the gas pedal. the The experts say that make noise from cam gear but voice is similar with that in your videos. Can you help me?
Although I am not familiar with the 1.5 L I’m pretty sure that you have a timing belt so I don’t think you would have cam phaser issues. So I’m really leaning towards you have the linkage in the turbo rattling.Like wastegate etc. some of my other subscribers may chime in to help with your scenario. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help, but I would definitely look into the wastegate linkage first .
@LivinWith3M Legit saved me. I knew it wasn't cam phasers. I thought it was a knock or a tranny problem but I didn't FEEL it in my feet or the wheel like those do. I knew it had to be something tiny and probably turbo related. I was right. Thanks again.
Question: my rattle or noise happens not at start up, but randomly when the foot is on ecellorator. It's almost grinding like and when I lift foot off the gas it stops.
Look into the IWE Check Valve. My 2018 f150 had random grinds when accelerating/turning and replacing the IWE check valve solved that. Cost less than $30 and takes about a minute to replace so doesn't hurt to try. Another way to confirm if the IWE check valve is bad is when it makes the grinding/rattle noise, turn on 4x4. If turning on 4x4 stops the grinding noise, then the IWE check valve most likely needs to be replaced. Good luck! @dillionowens6485
I honestly don’t know. I would assume low to no boost. If you have already had the cam phasers fixed and springs on wastegates and still have noise then there is a good possibility your turbo is chattering internally.
you’ll know if one of ur turbos go bad it’ll run like shit misfiring most likely and u will barley be able to accelerate might not even run at all might just keep shutting off
I have experienced rattles, but never the turbo not spooling. That actually sounds internal in the turbo. I could be wrong tho. Please let us know what you find out.
