Maradona is definitely the greatest football player of all time imo.
I just about remember him playing and it wasn't just another game, it was an event, like a Mike Tyson fight. If you could, you just had to watch it. Nobody could touch him and that was even after years of abusing drugs etc. Messi is probably the only other player to ever shock me in about 35 years of watching football, but Maradona did things that made your mouth drop. Then there's his aura, there was just something beyond special about his aura. Messi just doesn't have that, or the ability to be nasty like Maradona did. Maradona wouldn't hesitate to kick an opponent hard for whatever reason if needed, Messi would hold back. Difficult to fully explain everything, but Maradona is just simply out there on his own, winning massive titles on his own almost too. Messi played in great Barcelona teams, Maradona played for an average Napoli and Argentina, yet he won the 2 big trophies with them. RIP Diego!!!!!

Messi statistically is the best ever (scored the most goals, made the most assists). But it's impossible to compare players across generations. The biggest difference in Maradona's days is that you would have to almost kill someone to get a yellow card! There were specialized goons on some teams whose specialty was to literally injure and take out the opponent's best players. Maradona's body took such abuse that he was hooked on pain drugs for the rest of his life. The things that opponents tried and sometimes succeeded in doing to him are totally illegal nowadays.

Maradona was better than Messi. Messi played in the best team of his generation and achieved all his successes there. Diego, however, single-handedly put an insignificant Italian team like Napoli in the world limelight. Messi could never have done that, nor could any other football player in history. Furthermore, he took a mediocre Argentinean national team to the World Cup in 1986. No one achieved what Diego achieved in the history of football. The guy was a freak of nature, the closest thing to a god on a football field.

He was one of a kind and the inspiration for Messi (obviously), Ronaldinho and many other greats who came after him. There's also one thing you have to put in perspective.
This is the 80's era (the one I grew up in), the pitches were awful compared to today's ones. Uneven with the ball hoping all over the place which made dribbling and the ball difficult to control. The boots and the ball were much heavier and more importantly, the rules weren't the same. The attackers weren't given as much protection as today. Tackles from behind, flying tackles, kicks, pushes, all of these career ending fouls which would get you a guaranteed red card nowadays, were hardly punished. Defenders were out to literally cut him in half since he couldn't be stopped by conventional means. Yet he went on the pitch and did his stuff anyway without ever complaining or diving.
He was not only very gifted, but also fearless, charismatic and a leader of men. However, bad company (the Camorra, Napoli's mafia which most certainly gave the necessary funds to buy him out from FC Barcelona), too much money at a too young age for someone who came out of Argentina's poorest and most defavourized neighborhoods, lead him to a very unhealthy way of life (booze, coke and women). It ultimately took its toll and dramatically shortened his career as well as his life. Yet he's still up there with the all time greats.
All in all, a football Robin Hood, larger than life, revered as a literal god in Napoli (Italy) and Argentina. Many have been more consistent over the years, won more trophies but no one will have his aura, nor bring as much joy to the 'underdogs' as he did other than maybe Garrincha (Brazil) in the 60's.

If you want to truly grasp the man and what he did at Napoli (a poor southern italian city with a nothing club when he arrived in 1984. He led them to their two and only Italian Championships in 87 and 90, as well as a European Cup in 89) in the then world's toughest league, then this one is mandatory. 4:07 he played for Napoli team and during that match (Napoli Vs Juventus) Napoli got a "penalty" but the referee didn't give the penalty to napoli he gave them a indirect free kick (someone has to touch the ball first or you can't shoot toward the goal) inside the penalty area, everybody was protesting with the referee, he then took the ball and said "don't worry i'll score anyway" and so he did.
when he stopped playing Napoli took out his jersey number (no one in napoli can wear number 10) and now after his death our stadium is called "Stadio Diego Armando Maradona"

I have seen interesting documentaries about Maradona, the one from HBO is great, also the one from logos. There is one documentary of his stage in Barcelona : Futbol club maradona.
He had a hard life but drugs were his ruin.

Agree with some of the earlier comments that when Maradona was in his prime the worlds best defenders were terrified of Maradona because he could make them look stupid. That's never happened with Messi who was more of a team player and needed great players around him to help him excel. Maradona represented the spirit of Argentina.

Messi is not as complete, strong or as good at defending or passing. Messi is not as tough and not as good a leader, Messi is a better dribbler and scorer though and faster. They are not actually that similar, They are both small Argentinian exceptional dribblers, but really the rest of their game is very different. Maradona is an all round player, Messi is quite specialised, don't get me wrong Messi is probably the best Wing forward ever, but Maradona was much better in midfield and in general as a leader.

@@jacksmith4460 Better dribbler I'd say is very debatable. Messi is surely a more consistent dribbler because Maradona wasn't always at his best phisically, but at their best its debatable.
Messi better scorer true but just because he plays in a more advanced position and today's game is more offensive and faster. The level of teams they played is not comparable aswell, obviously in favor of Messi.
Maradona also has a better touch and more flair, more unpredictable, Messi is a bit faster with the ball and is more disciplined .

that push forward style is argentine coded soccer, brazilians for example have jogo bonito,
further more maradona gave birth to much of todays soccer styles, since he was a prime example of skill , tactic, and prime passing.

Btw, the camera work during the 1980s etc was very good and clear…but the problem with the footage in these types of highlight vids of old matches, is the probably due to the fact that a lot of the footage is from people’s old dusty VCR cassettes that they taped those games onto from regular broadcast TV over 30-40 years ago…lol. Usually the best footage would be from the original versions at the sports networks or on DVD or something.

The big, big difference between Maradona and Messi, is that Maradona made the team he played on much, much better. He almost singlehandidly take Argentina all the way in the World Cup '86, and he took Napoli from the middle of nowhere to TWO national championships in the 80's. That is the only championchips Napoli has to this day. Messi is incredibly good, but Maradona is in a class of his own.

Not really, I remember reading that in Europe most of football players were fast runners, specially defenders.
They had very high speed according to "cooper test" but they didn't know how to run with a ball in their feet, defender just were running the faster they could to stop the forwards. But Maradona had a good manage of his speed and a great ball control.

Messi and Pele had more all round ability, better sportsmanship and much greater longevity at the top. However Maradona was a better dribbler, small but strong with thick legs. He's the closest there's been to a "one man team". He also played in the toughest era in football probably ever in the Italian league during the late 80's and early 90's which was the best league in the world at the time with the greatest defenders playing very physical fouling football. Maradona was kicked all over the place but still incredibly won the Italian league twice and world cup with average teams.
Let me tell you something.
There are only 3 real legends in football; Pele, Maradona & Ronaldo R9.
In the modern game, no other players come even close, Messi or Cristiano.
You see, these 3 legends won the World Cup, which Messi or Cristiano failed to do.
Messi & Cristiano hardly ever performed well in their national colours, let alone the World Cup.
But, Pele, Maradona & Ronaldo, literally carried the entire team on their back.
These 3 players managed to inspire their whole team to fight for every ball, to win every game. And they didn't just inspire the entire team, BUT the entire country.
Sure Messi & Ronaldo may have scored more, BUT, winning the WC carry the most points here.
That is why, Maradona will forever be one of the true legends in world football, along with Pele & Ronaldo.
If Messi wants to be in that group of legends, he only has to win the World Cup.

Unfortunately, we are looking at time deteriorated video that hasn't been remastered. At the time of the games, the picture quality was great unless you didn't have cable or a good antenna. Now to Maradona: There is no comparison between Messi and Maradona. Messi is amazing and we'll probably not see another like him in like time. Maradona however, although he scored fewer goals, was just on an unreachable skill level. The things he did with the ball will never be seen again in the same way. In today's game, players, fields, and rules are worlds apart.
