Very useful video. I have a couple of additions for the DIYer working at home:
-Without a serious air tool, removing the torque-to-yield bolts isn't easy. Make sure you have a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a strong 15mm, 6-point socket (NAPA sells them). A 12-point socket may not be capable of the necessary torque - it may slip off, mangling the head of the bolt.
    - Normal levels of corrosion may make the rotor much more difficult to remove than was the case in the video. To deal with this, first remove the dust shield inboard of the rotor (3 small bolts that take an 8mm socket). Then use a heavy hammer to drive the rotor inboard until it becomes loose, and rotate it to give the correct alignment for removal. Finally, a lot of tapping with a medium hammer will drive the rotor outboard and eventually off.

Great video! I feel the same way about brakes that you do. It is optional for your vehicle to run, it is non-optional for it to stop. I have to do the brakes on my Transit and feel ready to do it after this video. Thanks for taking the time!

    Outstanding for so many reasons!
Professionalism is difficult to mix successfully with accuracy AND a sense of humor. My boss buys 2-3yr old Transits for his HVAC fleet. It's my job to ready them for the road.
I am also in charge of the fleet as it rolls on...
Your advice and wisdom has been instrumental in my well-being!
My "Rust Belt" notes will include the use of an air hammer to separate the rear rotor from the axle flange. Then further use to align it for removal. A floor jack kept the bearing stationary.
    Thank you for being meticulous!

This is the best Automotive How-to video I have seen on RUclips. I used to maintain 3 T1N Sprinters, and the factory service manual from Mercedes was great. No such luck from Ford, (I tried one of the cobbled together Transit “Service Manual CD’s” off Ebay, and am really disappointed by what is available). Videos like yours are an absolute life saver - thanks for taking the time to put these together - sharing your valuable expertise is hugely appreciated by us shadetree mechanics :)

Harrison: as many others here have commented already - I REALLY appreciate the thoroughness of your video content and dialog. It's some of the best I've seen anywhere. Has given me the assurance to go ahead and do my own Transit's brakes (both front and rear). In my case - the rear rotors are at a point where they need to be replaced also. Some of the comments made here by those who question some of your suggestions re: safety and liability-related aspects of this work, and who appear to feel that their levels of legal and mechanical expertise are beyond reproach, is simply unfortunate. They really need to go find something more useful and productive to do with their time. Again - great video. Many thanks for all the details re: parts and tools needed.

Thanks so much for this video. I watched a couple of other videos and was about to do the pads only until hearing your sermon on Doing It Right. Other videos let the caliper dangle by the hoses and didn't replace the bolts that should have been. The detailed torque specs and part numbers were a huge help, and I was lucky enough to get the last set of bolts from my local dealer. It took me a half days work, but coming from someone who's done little more than change oil, I'm pretty thrilled--the prospect of removing the axle was daunting before seeing this. Saved $600 in labor the dealer quoted, which is much appreciated during covid without work.
One question that came up--the sliding bolts are not identical--one has a little splined rubber piece at the end, one has two shallow grooves. After watching the video closely, I think I put them back as you did--but the bores looked the same, so I'm guessing it's not critical?
Lastly, if someone else rewinds the piston too far and the notches won't align, try applying the parking brake slightly with the tool loosened and in place to stop it. This pushed it out enough to try again.

Excellent. The problem is that the Ford Dealership said the pads were ok. That was 10,000 miles ago. We had replace them at 36,000 miles because they had ground down the rotor both sides. Replaced pads and rotors. Axle coming out was a surprise, yikes. So now with 40,000 miles, the Ford Dealer said the pads were ok. The shop around the corner..... good reputation.... said the pads aren't worn. I can see them. They are worn. No one, I guess, wants to do this. Pain in the butt maybe. Going to another dealership to see if they will replace them, as the rotors will be grinding soon. Your were very informative though. Oh, and the tool to push the piston only goes ONE direction and that is only the passenger side. The right hand side like you did, we need your universal turning tool. Not sure where that is available.

Be doing the rear brakes when the parts come in (Rotors x2, pads x2, axle bolts/ring kits x2, caliper bracket bolts w/guide pin kits x2. Locktite, brake cleaner, caliper compression tool w/hooks, some grease, jack stands) came out to about $250 (Extra tools to use later with front brakes makes it about $200 when counting only brake parts.) Get this. I checked for the heck of it the estimate at pep boys who quoted $680 for the job.) So more than 3 times the cost. I hope to video my job and post it as an example of how we can do this ourselves. JIFFY Lube quoted about $350 for the rear using basic pads and turning rotors most likely. So yeah, looking forward to taking care of this maintenance task soon.
Since my front brakes are still not grinding, my impulse is to only change the pads. If my inspection of the rotors reveal smooth surface. Perhaps as a test to see if the pads only approach will work. If any issues upon operations check then I'll just go all t he way and get new rotors. Rear rotors were about $40 each. Thinking I may try to get my old rear rotors resurfaced since I'll be able to drive them in and drop them off for the work. Then later I can use those when rear brakes need to be done again. Same with front rotors as well. Your right about $20 per rotors resurfacing. The old rear pads expired at around 30k mile point after buying vehicle new.
Your video made this do it yourself possible
    Thanks.

Good job and explanation- 2020 transit 350hd DRW with 20k miles - hearing some “brake noise “ -howl? Coming from the back. Looking at the front rotors and pads look like plenty of pad left, but the backs are harder to see from any angle. Feeling with my finger , the caliper feels closer to the rotor than the fronts do. I think I probably only need rear brakes. Ford dealers near me don’t have rotors or bolts in stock and have to be ordered. Are you advising against pad slapping in my case ?

I have a friend that has a 2017 Transit cargo 150(I think) have an abs RH rear abs code(actually 3 codes) as a fleet mechanic, do the transits suffer from dirty rings that throw those abs, traction codes. The abs sensor wire looks fine but sheared the small mount screw 😩nicely done and I love the use of torque wrenches. 👍

It really depends on what type of driving you do. Our long distance transfer trucks can go 50k between brake jobs but our city 911 trucks are lucky to get 20k. As a rule we change oil every 5k ans rotate and balance the tires and while we do we inspect the brakes.

I read on the Ford Transit Forum that the torque on the axel bolts were 50 ft. Lbs and 90 degrees it was shown on the Ford website.

Thanks for this very informative video. Our rear brakes are due for replacement for our family transit 350 van. Got 24k out of the stock pads. What kind of mileage do you average out of these pads and rotors? Do you think the upgrade to power stop z36 series would be worth it? Thanks again!

I use the wearever professional platinum and they last an ambulance about 20k which should last much longer for consumer use. Hope that helps and thanks for watching

Thanks for the video! Great work and I appreciate the level of detail you went into. A question that I have is if there is a reason that your employer didn't opt for the HD Transits for their ambulances? Do you have any experience working on them? I find that there isn't anyone doing a similar walkthrough for the HD models (like mine). I am waiting for some PowerStop brake kits to arrive so I can do this job on my personal van.

Maybe the dual rear wheel wells would limit the space for the gurney and personnel?

I love everything that you say in your videos, but I would like to talk to you about the Ford transit brakes because I have a company like you work for and we’re running through brake pads like water about 20,000 miles is all you get out of brake pads on these transit is that the same thing you’re seeing? Is there anyway that I could talk to you? I am in Illinois and I know you’re in Oklahoma.

Great video (and your other videos as well - your video about adjusting the sliding door was a godsend!). If you see this comment, I have a question : I keep reading conflicting info about the rear jacking points, and how Ford actually recommend lifting from the axle, as there are risks of buckling the underbody; yet, I see you've jacked it near the front of the leaf springs; car to share where you jack the vehicle from, precisely?

      @medtec6747  2 года назад +1

I put my lift pads directly in front of the leaf spring mount on the frame channel. Ford has a lift point diagram I wish I could share without copyright infringement but it basically shows that the frame channel that the leaf springs mount to that runs the whole length of the vehicle is an approved lift point

@@medtec6747 Awesome, thanks a lot. Your explanation is very clear and I’m sure once I’m under the vehicle, it’ll be even clearer.

I did this rear brake job on my 2015 Ford transit XLT, but now my handbrake is loose and doesn’t work as it did before. How do I adjust handbrake? Any videos or suggestions. Thanks

Awesome video! You are going to save me a ton of time. I thank you for that. Do you know if this process is the same for a 2016 transit 150? I assume you are working on a 250 as it is an ambulance.

My transit has a hard brake pedal, checked all the discs, pads, calipers and the vacuum and all seems well....any ideas.
Brake pedal really stiff and braking is poor but weirdly when revs are over 1500rpm the pedal operates normally.
