Ben Hollar, you're the man! You saw the problem(s) and you've taken the steps to heal, fix, and correct the things in your life that needed fixing. You and Meg are lucky and blessed to have each other and your family. Now, put them roots down and grow your Hollar Homestead! May God continue to bless and watch over you and your family!

Meg & Ben, the thing that stood out in the beginning for me when watching your videos is the way you, Meg, look at Ben when he speaks. It was totally obvious to me that you're a giant in her eyes, and now knowing your story, I understand that look much better. She's so proud of you, Ben, and loves you dearly. God's blessings on your lovely family homesteading dreams.

Ben I absolutely applaud you coming out in front of us there and on RUclips about you being a recovering alcoholic. As a wife of a recovering alcoholic myself, I know it takes a lot for a man to admit that problem, face it, and conquer it day to day. I also know as a wife how much it means to have your husband finally choose you and your kids over drinking. Way to go my friend!! Love, hugs and much respect!! 💕💕💕🌺🌺

It's those worms! I blame the worms. lol I just turned my compost pile and in one shovel there were probably 100 red wigglers and large worms. Too bad there's no more fish, all fished out in Washington or I'd grab a dozen and drop a line. Makes me happy to see those worms working for me.

Ben, your story supports what happened similarly in my own father's life. He came from very difficult circumstances, alcohol, smoking (tobacco), anger and rage. He dug up our backyard in the city and began to plant vegetables. Soon, he too started to compost (after he burnt up his first attempt at tomatoes with chemicals). He also hunted and fished a great deal. Later he and my mother moved to the country on one acre and he had become a master gardener without any certificate. What I will say about all this, the closer he got to the production of his own food and the lessons of patience and gentleness with the land that produced them the more human he became. Tending the land and crops also opened the door for him to move from darkness to light. Your story validates my own family's experience. If we are made from the earth I think that when we go to earth as a partner we become more of who we are created to be. Many blessings to your beautiful family.

@@annacompan7219 Thank you for your reply. Man's original work which was divinely appointed was to tend the Garden and respect its nature and work with it and I think it allows man to catch a glimpse of that lost paradise when we, who are made from the earth, work in tandem with the seasons and that nature of growing things. Bless you.

Ben our stories are so similar. My catalyst was combat, I am a disabled veteran with PTSD, anxiety, depression, along with multiple physical injuries. I self medicated for years. I lost my marriage, my kids didn't know me. I still struggle but I don't self medicate, no more alchohol at all for me. I live in a small town, on a 60 x 120 lot. I grow as much as I can. I have chickens and ducks (my neighbors love me). I have repaired my relationships with my kids. Together we are working to move to my home state of West Virginia and build a farmstead like I grew up on. Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations along with your successes. You're an inspiration, by keeping it real and sharing your lives people can see what is possible. God Bless and thanks again.

Ivan, I just want to say well done, it is never too late to repair and rebuild your relationship with your children. I prayed my whole life for my father to stop drinking, it took almost 30 years, but when he built a new relationship with God, he built a new relationship with all of his family. He was an adored Grandfather & Father when he passed away. There is a saying in France, 'bon courage et bon continuation', 'be strong and keep going', which is what I wish for you & your family and Ben & his beautiful family.

Meg and Ben. You are entering into the lifestyle I lived in the 70s & 80s. You must have some idea by now, what a wonderful, satisfying life that waits ahead, for you and your family. The freedom of living off the land has no equal!
It will allow you so many options. You could work part time, as I do. My goal is to pay off my Tacoma in 2020. Jim wants to work on our family farm full time for as long as possible and eventually cut back on the cattle herd. He is 74 and going strong! So you should be able to stay in good shape to do what ever you decide upon for your homestead. So happy to hear you took back your health Ben. Ready to forge ahead and enjoy life!

I agree, family first. Trying to find a way for my husband to retire. His job is hurting him badly. We want land and as of now I am fighting health issues and trying to grow a lot of our own food.not much space but I grow what I can. We can't have chickens ( I tried to fight that but lost). We live in the city in a neighborhood that has gone done badly. We will be lucky to get 7 grand for our home. Had to get a roof put on last year that cost 3x that but would of cause damage if we hadn't so hard to save money with me not being able to work and my husband working way to much. I pray it is God's plan and he will find a way for us to move to land with a home and maybe a barn. We promised God never to go into debt again so I keep trying to save. God's blessing to you and yours

The thing I like most about you all is that you are real. I was thinking that before you said it at the end of this video. I'm curious how the work now compares to the work before. You are still working really hard. But I'm guessing it's better cause you're building your home together. Also, many of the homestead channels say it's about eating healthy, but I feel like it's even bigger, like a spiritual thing. I think it's the lifestyle we were created to do. I think it will strengthen family relationships and increase wonder of the creation and Creator. I think that is part of the healing too. You all are doing great. Gardening is so therapeutic and cheaper than a therapist that wants to pump you full of meds. Kudos to you both xx

Meg, I love the way you look at Ben.
Ben, it takes a lot of strength to share your story and be vulnerable.
It is great that your kids are seeing you be open and honest and sharing your story.
    Thank you for sharing.

It takes deep courage to share your truth and vulnerability, it shows strength in both yourself Ben and in Meg that you guys stood together in love for your families and had the utter determination to choose a better path. You and your beautiful children deserve nothing less. Stay strong both of you ❤

Love to those sweet boys sitting in the back at the table and that pretty little Girl. Your talk was a blessing and I think you both are so brave. Ben, We lost three nephews to PTSD in 2008. I am so glad that you are continuing to #PressOnRegardless. Seek the Lord and he will sustain you.

Ben - it's not how you were, it's how you are that counts. You saw the need and gathered up the strength to overcome. Such a life changing thing to do. You can just tell how happy Meg is. Her eyes just shine, because she has her husband in her life that truly is a husband. So happy for you all. Struggles in this life will be so much easier now, because you can share the load. What a blessing!!

Oh my goodness, I'm in tears....my husband just took on a really stressful job and is in that place now. 2 - 3 beers a night to relax. I know it is not good for him. I have planted a small garden, and hope to influence him to better health through homegrown food. Thank you for sharing your journey - you guys are an inspiration!!!
