This was my favorite song from this session. His cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" (from this same set) was another masterpiece.
If you would like to venture more into the Grunge era unplugged sessions, I would really love to recommend the Alice in Chains show. In particular; Nutshell and Frogs. Layne Stayley was lightning in a bottle, and his voice was like no other.

Song was first record around 1920 by Leadbelly. Leadbelly is one of the first black musicians ever recorded. I believe was in prison at the time. Murder was a common theme in popular music then.

Kurt was so talented and he loved the music but couldn't handle the stardom. He battled his demons for a long time and then he married his biggest demon, C Love (I can't even say her name). She was the absolute worse person for him. She didn't take care of him, she grabbed that limelight and shoveled everything from drugs, alcohol and mind games at him. She was his demise.
Interesting history I found from another RUclipsr. As he says this is a cover of a Lead Belly song, originally called Black Girl, which Lead Belly changed to "My Girl" when he was asked to perform it in front of white audiences. Lead Belly's version of the song is one of many as this song goes back to about the 1800's and is a popular Appalachian Murder Ballad. A "murder ballad" comes from letters that people would write when there was a horrific crime committed (not always murder) and spread them around to either warn people or to tell the story of the victim as they were not reported. At the time they were often written about black people trying to escape slavery and being caught and lynched in Appalachia. His song "Polly" is also like an original Nirvana murder ballad, it's about the kidnapping and torture of a teenage girl near where he lived. This particular murder ballad is about a woman on the run, her husband is decapitated by a train (driving wheel is a train engine), believed to be tied down based on other versions. She has run in to the woods, in East Appalachia there are pine forests with so many tall narrow timbers that the ground around them is always cold as the sun never touches it do to the shade. She is describing hiding from the people who killed her husband in the woods where the sun never shines.

I don’t think Leadbelly actually wrote it. I could be wrong but I don’t think exact authorship is known. I think the first version recorded was in 1926. Lead Belly didn’t record it until 1944. One of those songs where the lyrics have changed depending on who is singing it or the audience. I think Lead Belly is the one who changed the title to Black Girl.

I'd like to suggest, maybe sometime down the road listening to Rhiannon Giddens cover of Elizabeth Cotten's Shake Sugaree (and Cotten herself). 👏Thank you for your sincere reaction to this masterpiece👏 This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he looked up at 5:41 - haunting, brings me to tears every time. (I know you saw it too). Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔
PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance 🖤

Rory Gallagher was also a big Leadbelly fan, and did a wonderful version of “Out on the Western Plain” with some glorious guitar playing. Track it down. And anyone who wants to hear the Leadbelly style in modern terms should check out Snaker Dave Ray. He was a twelve string genius who hung around bars in Minneapolis, gave lessons to Bob Dylan and gave Leo Kottke and Bonnie Raitt their starts. His two solo albums are collectors items.

Pure insanity. Narcissistic abuse will literally drive you insane, but Love was notoriously volitile, unhinged and aggressive AF. He probably spent the first few nights home at a motel bc he was gonna break it to her, or already did, and had to get well enough to deal with her bullshit but since she lacks empathy, she didn't want to be disgraced by her skyrocketing, extremely talented and personable, soon to be ex, anyways... Tangent. I dunno, it's always possible that he thought she would ruin him or just make life eternally miserable, who knows really with his potential and daughter to live for. Either way, whether it was suicide or foul play, it's incredibly tragic.

Nirvana was always like that. That’s why everyone liked him because he was different. He spoke what he felt and didn’t care if somebody didn’t like it and everyone knew it. Personally I didn’t really care about his music because it was to far up there and I believe that’s when all that type of music started falling apart.

interesting little fact is demonstrated in this video. If you watch Kurt signing those autographs you can see he was actually right-handed. No-one (including him) ever really understood why he played guitar left -handed but he always did, right from the moment he first ever picked one up as a child.

This was Kurt saying goodbye to the world, to his fans... His last song before committing suicide. 😢 He showed how much Pain and anguish he had. The thing is, he told everyone what he was doing through his lyrics but no one realized it, they just thought it was an amazing cover.
