"a musician guy on stage, going through something, not putting on a show, he didn't care..... so raw and authentic" Damn, girl, as a guy closer to death than birth who still remembers where I was when we found out he died, you couldn't really have nailed it any better.
I had the privilege of seeing this live on tv. Watch the whole MTV Unplugged show. Lake of fire is my favorite. The whole show is amazing. Yes he was troubled but you can look that up. Loved how you took it all in before comenting.
First time I ever listened to Nirvana. I see what you mean about no use talking about stage presence. This was way beyond any of that. Thanks for your insights.
It’s one of the many examples of American musicianship at its best. The best of us live this shit, and the rest of us try to find a way to be so open and honest through a performance
Kurt was a deeply conflicted person in basically every way. The only time he seemed capable of truly expressing his full range of feelings, empathy and intent was through music and performance. Pure.
Hi nice to see that you see and put words on what many others do not see or ignore. Such people like you we need more in this world. God bless you. Love you.
I can only tell you that Kurt Cobain sensitivity reached my country Chile in 1991, I saw his first album, when he died I obviously felt it in my soul because I knew that he was not only a great musician, but he was also a good human being. The second and most important thing is that after seeing reactions to this song on RUclips for years, you are the only one who deserves my respect for not interrupting this great performance, my eternal gratitude and I ask you as a special favor to react to another great song on MTV Unplugged Porch by Pearl Jam, there you will also see the essence of a human being who expresses his feelings. Big regards from Chile..
When an artist puts so much emotion into their craft day in & day out, no wonder we have so many self deletions. With that said I do have questions in regards to his.
I actually sang karaoke for the first time in my life tonight, at a small downtown cafe I visit regularly. Of course lots of questions had gone through my head beforehand- who’ll be there, how many, will I be on-key, will they have the songs I want to sing, how much of a performance am I going to give. The focus ended up being putting enough power in my voice to use the less-than-pro mic. But here, the focal point was obviously the unleashing of raw pain and emotion. Kurt delivered far more authentic intensity than you’ll ever see on any amateur night.
"It might be nice to eventually start playing acoustic guitars, and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter. Rather than a 'Grunge Rocker you know?' Then one day I may be able to take advantage of that when I'm older, and sit down in a chair, and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something you know? And it won't be thought of as a big joke, who knows?" -Kurt Cobain 1993, a couple months before this. You did and we loved it. He had plans for the future beyond Nirvana
Yeah. Word’s that he related because for a time he was homeless, sleeping under a bridge in rainy Aberdeen, Washington. Must be creeping up, “Greatest performances, ever” lists.
Another great reaction video. Love your authenticity! Soeakibg of which, i found you through emma kok and keep coming back eagerly looking for your reaction to her latest masterpiece. Is it in the que?
The first time I heard this I thought something like "thank you for reality at last". But reality is harsh and hard. This song right here is the way things are. I think he felt the horror of it all in general and also his own particular version of the universal terror that's always there, outside, waiting to get in.
It wasn't long before this that I was introduced to the band from my friend in Jr High. I was hooked from the minute I heard it. I remember being glued to the TV when this aired in 1993. For the guy who felt alone, he gave a lot of us teens a voice. We felt welcome, regardless of how "strange" we were. He died just 5 months later. It left a void in a lot of our hearts. As great as this show was, and still is; you should really think about checking out Alice In Chains - Unplugged. It's a masters class in not only showmanship, but music as a whole. Two beautifully tortured souls, take from us far too soon. Kurt's last gift to us was "You know you're right". The level of emotion is high.
Thx from France for your video ! Thkx for your respect for my late Kurt. He SANG all the time 'bout his pain and his future death... He wanted "Pennyroyal tea" for himself in MTV show, not to show how he was good but for singing 🔴 "I'm on my own with everyone." "I am in VERY BAD POSTURE" "I 'm an ANEMIC royalty" Same in "Come as you are"... 🔴 "No, i swear i don't have a gun." Yes HE HAD MANY GUNS not for hunting, he loved animals or a mass murder... One day, he has become parano completly in his Seattle's home with Courtney and Frances and he locked himself in a bathroom with all his guns and rifles... Everybody cried and screamed in front of the baby and Courtney (yes she was the worst wife for Kurt and i hate her BUT she called 911 and told the truth "I am the Kurt Cobain's wife, he threated to kill himself , he is locked in bathroom with a dozen of guns" The cops came and one of them who t9ld to Kurt "come on, u're a good kid and u love your beautiful daughter and when he opened the door he has been put on the floor and ALL guns and rifles are gone with cops. Courtney saved him in Rome too in march 94, she could let him die and BINGO ! All the money for the widow but she saved and stayed with her daughter's father. It wasn't an "accident" AT ALL in Roma, he lied to Dave and Krist. I'm depressed for 56 yrs, i wanted die at 6 and school of course, send me in cuckoo's nest, in France.. I've understood immediatly he was mentally sick not dangerous except for himself. In 1994, all the world doesn't understand BUT guys, HE TALKED ABOUT DEATH IN ALL HIS SONGS "Load up YOUR GUNS and bring yours friends" "I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now, untertain us." A DENIAL (X9) He said,in his way, the songs, he wanted "go away forever". We have been blinds... STOP SAYING HE IS MURDERED !! Kurt was a KIND SOUL, good man, simple genuine guy, he had no enemies. The ONLY error of Courtney was to send him at Exodus and cut his credit cards for localize him. For a parano, it's torture. He wanted take heroine, he has been all the time honest about that so let him take heroine , it was HIS life, HIS body and he was SMART he knew drugs are shitty but it could help sometimes...
Kurt loved music, Kurt hated fame. Music loved Kurt but so did fame and it was all too much. Being dopesick during rehearsal and high for the performance to try and cope gave us this. I'll still never forget the day in HS when I learned he passed and went home and scraped his initials into my main pedal I used for their crunchier songs.
Someone I found recently who has that certain something is Sierra Ferrell. If you are interested her live performances are very special. Hey Me, Hey Mama, Years The Sea or her cover of Harvest Moon are all good; but you really can't go wrong with anything.
I've seen vocal coaches go over this performance a bunch but I never heard from a stage presence coach. As far as presence goes, he was a heck of a show man but he was especially shy in person and this particular show gave him alot of anxiety. First, he thought no one would take him seriously doing a show like this. Second, the rehearsal of this show almost made the band quit, and they had to stop and start alot during the sound check early in the day. It turned out they were able to get through every song no second take on a single song (the show is prerecorded, and it's typical to reshoot a song or two). Kurt was especially happy with how the show turned out though and told the producers to make sure to include all the shots they had of him smiling whenever they broadcasted. Alex Coletti (the producer) said he barely had any but was able to put it in. The tone of the show turned out to be somber and sad regardless, definetly more so cause it came out weeks after he died. In the end, unplugged was not at all representational of his typical stage presence one bit.
Something about the vacuous 80s made someone like me feel even more disconnected from the world, but Kurt and others of the genre put a voice to the dissatisfaction and separation, and for once I felt connected because at least there were others out there who understood.
If this made your heart ache, you should react to Alice in Chains on MTV Unplugged-Layne Staley's performance (and sickly appearance) will mesmerize you while simultaneously crushes your soul! RIP 🕊️♥️ ♾️ Kurt D. Cobain 2/20/67-4/5/94 & Layne T. Staley 8/22/67-4/5/02

Anything from this session is eerie with the hindsight that he was de*d within the next few days. Heart shaped box is just heart breaking from this session. Something I think you'd love is Kasey Chambers - Lose Yourself (eminem cover). It is the best stage performance I've ever seen, and even MM allowed her to put it up on sp*tify.

Your guitar sold for $6,000,000, Kurt...I think you surpassed your favorite performer. On this cold night in November, this wasn't just a song, but a direct question to his wife who he knew was cheating on him, and it shows. The thousand yard stare. I wonder if he was thinking about Courtney Love, his wife, when he sang this song

It is hard to judge that from a stage presence perspective because that wasn't a performance on a stage, that was a window into a soul's pain.
