Mama Cass Elliot's reaction is so good. She recognized a true talent being introduced to the world. This was at the Monterey Pop Festival and I lived in Monterey for a decade. Every time I drove by the Monterey County Fairgrounds I'd wonder what it must have been like back in 1967 when it was going on and wishing I had a time machine.
Janis gave her whole heart and soul with every performance. She was a force of nature that burned so brightly for such a short time. She will go down in history.
Imagine being there and witnessing this performance for the first time. There was no RUclips, no Spotify, no internet. This was truly Janis’ coming out party. It was no longer Big Brother & The Holding Company, it was all Janis.
Though BB&THC still was ONE HELL of a band and IMHO never really got the credit they deserved for finding and "launching" Janis. James Gurley's lead playing is still among my favorites. Acidic biting tone!!
@@billholder1330 - I agree! Of course we don’t know what went on behind the scenes but I’m not sure why they couldn’t stay together. Probably a slimy promoter.
No matter how many times I see this performance, I'm still amazed at how she completely nailed the ending, the last word 'chain'. It could not have been any better. I mean, she KILLED it! Just unreal... 😎
Was so thrilled I saw Janis live in Calgary, AB a few months before she passed. She was such a soul blues entertainer I just had goosebumps every-time she performed. RIP Janis
Add east Texas down to Houston and up to Dallas and over into Louisiana over to Baton Rouge up to Shreveport and you have a major part of blues and Cajun roots that grew into modern music. Hell start in Texas over to Florida up to Tennessee and you have 80% of American music that has spread around the world. The pain felt in the South is a big key, regardless of the race of the singer or writer.
There will never be another be another Janis, rest her soul. A reactor once said about her, her voice makes you feel like she could win a bar fight and also hold you in her arms and make you feel like everything will be alright.
Back in the wonderfully tarnished era of raw emotional music talent when concerts weren't overly rehearsed with every move practiced and choreographed right down to hair flips and fake smiles. Just go on stage, live in the moment, and let the music possess you. I would take back row tickets to this concert a thousand times over rather than the best front row seats at any auto-tuned fluff-pop concert these days!

So glad you picked this version of Janis! Mama Cass (from The Mamas and The Papas) watched her from the front and she's filmed too. Janis beyond great here.
Keep in mind this was just before Janis gained national fame, Big Brother & the Holding Company was well known in the Bay area but not much beyond that, and Janis' name didn't even appear on the flyers advertising this concert. Cass was already famous, in a band that had multiple top ten hits.
Don't know if somebody has already said... But that performance was her second one of the day... That was her debut in the morning time and she blew people away so they told her to return for the evening performance when all of the big music stars of the day would be there.
