Mama Cass one of the other best female singers at that time in the world. clearly impressed by this new talent. it was a moment caught on camera. they all influenced eachother
@@Inyourspectraleyes Yeah...it's really kind of crazy when you think about it. Spanky MacFarland. Janis. Grace Slick. Cass Elliot. Petula Clark. Michelle Phillips. Bonnie Bramlett. Leslie Gore. Carla Thomas. They could all bring it. It's easy for young people today to look at someone like me and say, "old people always think their time was better." But really, go ahead and compare the lady singers of my day to what you have now. Taylor Swift who can't sing a note without Autotune. Lady Gaga who feels the need to dress up in clown outfits. And worst of all, a couple chicks rapping about their "Wet Ass Pussies". Worst of all, there's a market for songs done by females about their soaking wet vaginas. I haven't heard anyone say this is a bad thing. And all signs point to things getting worse.
You need to listen to COURTNEY HADWIN and her live AGT Audition 2018 (something like 3 or 400 million views at the time & plenty more since - waiting for her first album which covid has delayed) where she covered "Too Hard to Handle" which she did ala Janis Joplin - she lit the place up. Now, 3yrs on, she's been rockin some covers and making each one her own in the process). We who loved Janis Joplin dearly now love this young girl who will be even bigger, and for the same good reasons - it's been said by many she is Janice reincarnated 🤪👌 You will double your likes and subs if u win over Courtney Hadwin fans! Pls check her out 🙏 Love your reactions 👍❤
This is one of those performances that transcend all musical genres so regardless of you musical taste be it Rock Country Jazz etc. You can only watch this girl in stunned amazement
Big Brother already had an album out before Monterey Pop. I used to listen to it with a girl who worshiped Janis. However, like with the Grateful Dead, it may not have been a big record company. When Janis signed with a major label, part of the deal was she had to drop Big Brother as her back-up band. I think it helped to destroy her. Sam Andrews used to look after her.
This is the first time I've watched your reaction where your heart shows through your eyes... so soft, so loving, and even so much more beautiful than ever. :)
Great reaction. It's impossible to watch this without feeling her pain and your reactions day it all. Thanks for giving the little powerhouse from Port Arthur some love!
Janis is a legend from my youth. I didn't appreciate her at the time, but looking back? Damn. The great ones are gone way to soon. Thank you for sharing.
Ray J Howie Mandel said exactly the same thing when he ‘pressed’ the Golden Button after Courtney Hadwin’s performance on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT a couple years ago
This is her very first performance. This is were she was discovered.Every time I hear her I get sad because she died so young 27 from a drug overdose.I love her so much. Thanks😆
This was not Joplin's 1st performance. She had been singing in Texas coffee houses and in San Francisco at the Fillmore West and other venues for a couple years. This was her breakout performance.
Around the Bay Area we knew of her. What was going on at the Avalon and Filmore was way better than what was playing on the radio. Back then it took time to get known across the U.S. Everything was regional. There were hits on the West Coast before the East Coast ever heard of them. The Jefferson Airplane was the first with "Somebody to Love" but no one from the East Coast ever heard of them. The Summer of '67 brought maybe a million tourists out to S.F. I don't know if it's still the same but you can have stars in Texas who sells records but the rest of the country has never heard of them.
Monterey was also the first big rock and blues outdoor review festival ever so on many levels you are seeing pop culture history being made right here!
First time people seeing Janis with there mouth open lol Janis was from another planet .... that was Mama Cass from Mama & Papas, No one ever saw anyone like Janis die to young
You are generous and kind I personally never thought that that was Janis Joplin's best work I really feel her best work is on vinyl in a studio but I appreciate that you appreciate her live I really mean that thank you so much you're awesome
When I was in my mid 20's I was working for my then girlfriend's Dad's truck repair shop and worked with an older black guy who turned me onto the blues, gave me a Howlin' Wolf box set. We then began to talk about other artists and Janis Joplin came up and he thought she was black for the longest time, I'll never forget that comment, or Cliff for getting me into the blues 😉
The reason the filmmakers focused on that woman in the audience is because that is the legendary Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas. She, along with John Philip, helped to organize Monterey Pop and this was the coming out concert for Joplin.
this performance always tears me up. watch her interviewed on the dick cavett show and you'd think she was all sweet and light but man did she suffer when she grew up - and in love - and she just channeled that pain straight to the mike.
That woman in the audience was Cass Eliot from the Mamas and Papas. She died young too I think at 33 in 74 Janis passed two years after this concert in 70 at 27.
Cass Elliot was one of the people who put the Monterey Pop Festival together because she and the others in the Mamas and the Papas knew everyone in Rock music at the time. Almost nobody had ever heard Janis. And she was blown away.
A long time since I’ve seen your reactions...and this was the first song of Janis I ever heard...! Oh, and that was Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Papas with the impressed face!
Janis Joplin, Back in the 60’s and 70’s! Wow! That was a great time to be growing up with all the fantastic music and artists. Try listening to Joss Stone. She is English and from the 2000’s but she has that Janis Joplin like quality about her. You would enjoy😉
The great blues singer Big Mamma Thornton wrote this song and coached Janis for her interpretation. She loved Janis' version of her song very much, as we all do. Greatings from France. Allways love your reactions.
Couple of important points. The band was Big Brother and the Holding Company. Janis kind of hooked up with them. They thought they were super hot but Janis put them in the shade. They never got their mojo back after they were tagged as a backing band for Janis. Second point. This was on June 16, 1967. Janis died on October 6, 1970. So she was on the national scene for only 42 or 44 months. Not very long. You should do her, "Cry, Baby!" That'll rock your world. Starts out with that primal scream. Maybe the greatest hook in the history of rock 'n roll.
When Janis sang the blues, you got hit hard where it hurts the most - and it feels so good. FYI: Jimi Hendrix played at that same festival. You GOTTA do a reaction video to him playing "Wild Thing."
Cass was not the only famous person there. The festival audience was other performers. It was routine at festivals that performers when not performing would be in the audience. This was Janis's first appearance to known artists and she floored them.
This is why people of that generation say that this is "real" music. I'm only 31, and I have to agree. The 60's and 70's were filled with extremely talented musicians. There was more passion and meaning to the music.
Born in Port Arthur Texas, split to Austin after high-school, hung out w/Kris Kristofferson & many others, wound up in sunny California. CHEAP THRILLS is an early live album w/Big Brother & the Holding Company.
The woman in the audience is Mama Cass from The Mama's & Papa's. Welcome to Janis Joplin!
You'll be FOREVER changed!
The giy sitting next to Mama Cass was Allan "Blind Owl" Wilson of Canned Heat
That facial expression from Mama Cass is classic, and Mama had one hell of a voice
was thinking the same. Great to have it confirmed.
As amazing as Janis is here, my favorite part of this video is still Mama Cass mouthing "wow" at the end. Wow indeed.
Best R&B soul singer ever. No one compares to Janis Joplin!
Mama Cass one of the other best female singers at that time in the world. clearly impressed by this new talent. it was a moment caught on camera. they all influenced eachother
Impressed, yes. Blown away, definitely.
Mama Cass Elliot was great but I liked Spanky McFarland better. And of course the incomparable Bonnie Bramlett.
Leon Allan Davis Spanky had a magical voice its crazyy!!

Mama Cass at 7:48 "Wow!" 53 years later we all STILL agree with Mama Cass.
The woman shown in the audience was Mama Cass, also one of the greatest singers in rock history. She organized the concert you're watching.
Good for her time Linda Ronstadr better
Mama Cass would not be considered a rock singer, she was folk and ballads.
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN LOVE Linda Ronstadt but, well, no. They do not compare to each other.
It was John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas who helped organize the festival, not Mama Cass.
Wow. Yes ma'am..
Janis.. Queen of the Blues..
Caught that live - she came on stage looking a little shy and nervous, but when she let loose she blew us all away. Her introduction to the world.
Janis's voice was a perfect imperfection. You felt her words all the way to your soul..
Janis is the QUEEN of Texas Blues!
Janis walked off the stage like a schoolgirl after that gut wrenching vocal spectacular.
This is one of her best performances ever! I her vocal deliverance in this song, it kicks ass
She is hands down my favorite singer ever 😍 ❤
Janis is a legend, and was wayyy ahead of her time!!..RIP JANIS JOPLIN.
Ahead of her time....time stood still
This is one of those performances that transcend all musical genres so regardless of you musical taste be it Rock Country Jazz etc. You can only watch this girl in stunned amazement
I watch this Janis video everyday.
Janis is the best singer of all time because she puts every ounce of emotion in her singing!!!
Janis singing her heart out, Mama Cass in the audience and you reacting how much better can it get??? Ahahaha 😀. Keep up the good work!
RIP Janis, The Queen of Blues
Now that's what you call singing with conviction--and Janis sang the Blues like no other before or after.
Ooh my girl is back and with janis the one and only
ACTUAL QUEEN OF SOUL!
This is Janis' first time on the big stage. Her discovery by the big folks. She was signed immediately after by the big money.. They fought over her.
Big Brother already had an album out before Monterey Pop. I used to listen to it with a girl who worshiped

We all miss Janis, we miss her soooooooo much!!
I was at this performance! Unforgettable. How I love her.
janis was a legend..i love her
I had a lighthearted chat with Janis we had a couple of good laughs.
Janis Joplin The Queen of Rock🌹
Great reaction. It's impossible to watch this without feeling her pain and your reactions day it all. Thanks for giving the little powerhouse from Port Arthur some love!
NO ONE IS LIKE JANIS
Janis was a massive influence on Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin , nobody could compare to her a great among greats
Well,she's unique!
Yeah you could see that when ever he performed live on stage.
Nothing better than this !! This is the real deal !! Nothing better than this !! ❤
When Mama Cass says "Wow!", you KNOW it's something special!❤
I LOVE your reaction to her!!! She has always been my favourite female singer.
Oh darlin' you made this old man happy. I actually teared up a little seeing your astounding impressed reaction to my beloved Janis. Great work.
The smile on your face is priceless! Janis is pure raw talent!
Janis is a legend from my youth. I didn't appreciate her at the time, but looking back? Damn. The great ones are gone way to soon. Thank you for sharing.
At 5:09 - that's not just any spectator - she was also a professional musician - a singer for the Mamas & the Papas, Cass Elliot ("Mama Cass").
Also, record producer Clive Davis is in the audience and this is the night she got signed as an individual artist.
Ray J Howie Mandel said exactly the same thing when he ‘pressed’ the Golden Button after Courtney Hadwin’s performance on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT a couple years ago
"Blind Owl" Wilson of Canned Heat (another genius) was sitting next to Mama Cass
Her look was like I can sing but I might need a new job
Janis was raised less than 3 miles from me in Port Arthur, TX...She was an amazing artist who died way too young ....
If you want more Janis, I recommend her cover of Etta James' "Tell Mama" from the Festival Express tour.
This is her very first performance. This is were she was discovered.Every time I hear her I get sad because she died so young 27 from a drug overdose.I love her so much. Thanks😆

Miss mama Cass so much!
Monterey pop festival '67. Janice was signed to Columbia Records and the were so many powerhouse musicians at that concert. Legendary.
My idol, Janis Joplin great to see young people enjoying her too. Music never dies and always unites.
Monterey was also the first big rock and blues outdoor review festival ever so on many levels you are seeing pop culture history being made right here!
When you got Mama Cass in the audience adoring you, you're golden! ❤️
She is only gives me gose bumps ı adore her
There are two types of singers in the world... Janis Joplin and everybody else.
listen to it folks, no auto tune no sip sync bs this is pure live , she was amazing always
One of the greats of the greatest rock music generation! I was 15 in 1967. I got to see her several times including Red Rocks!
I’d kill to have been 15 then and experienced that
Thanks God the youth is seeing this thank god for you sharing her message!!! Keep her in your music lineup she's the best!!
First time people seeing Janis with there mouth open lol Janis was from another planet .... that was Mama Cass from Mama & Papas, No one ever saw anyone like Janis die to young
Janis Joplin also know as Pearl queen of rock an soul
Your reaction says it all. Wow.

"Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. A classic. He just passed away. RIP
Little music trivia. John Phillips of the Mama's and Papa's was thinking of asking Janis Joplin at one time to join them.
Thanks for posting. Raw emotion.
And I bet she meant every single note in her heart.

The place was full of legends that day, on stage and in the audience. That girl in the audience who said "Wow!" was Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas.
Love it!!!
I think this is my favorite reaction by you after seeing alot of your videos :)
Love your reaction!
🔥🔥🔥 maybe my favorite reaction by you ...today! They're all so.good!

She was the real deal, she gave so much emotion to her songs unlike today where it's all about money even here.
The queen 👸

Would loved to have seen her and Joe Cocker together. That would be the ultimate duo at that time for sure, maybe ever.
"A whole nother level of fire." Welcome to JANIS JOPLIN!!!
Awesome reaction, You rock the house
Ball and Chain was originally recorded by the legendary Big Mama Thornton, one of Janis' heroes.
