Hey everyone! It's been a few days since I watched this amazing film and I can say that it's still very much stuck with me... I didn't 100% put it together until after editing this video that if Cooper never went to Dr. Mann's planet and went straight to Dr. Edmunds like Amelia wanted, the entire ghost situation would have never happened, and he wouldn't have helped Murphy find the answers within the black hole. Absolutely mind-blowingly amazing film!
I can't wait to re-watch this in theatres for the 10 year anniversary! I keep seeing September 27th as a possible date for it coming back into theatres, but some have said December? Either way, I hope you all out there are able to rewatch it or see it in theatres for the first time like me! I don't care if I have to drive an hour or two out of my way to a theatre near me that's hosting the Interstellar return, but I'll be there!
Thank you all for watching this beautiful film with me! I'll have to put more Nolan films on the list for future reacts. I've also seen a TON of recommendations for "Arrival" and "The Martian" which I'd love to watch soon!

Interstellar was made with the advice of Kip Thorne, a theoretical scientist renowned for being the ultimate authority on the Theory of General Relativity, formulated by Albert Einstein, and in other words: Gravity. Everything you see in the movie is theoretically possible, although some things were stretched a lot for the drama. The visuals of the black hole were generated by the FX studio based on the formulas given by Kip Thorne. 5 years later, in 2019, the Black hole telescope had first light, and the first ever picture of the accretion disc of a black hole was observed. It looks nearly exactly like the black hole in interstellar.
In my opinion, Interstellar is THE BEST sci-fi movie, ever. In my book it easily tops 2001: A space odyssey.
That said, Arrival and The martian are also excellent movies that keep your eyes and ears glued to the screen.

Not really, the light would be stretched so extreme it would be barely visible in the radio range. In any case the ship would become redder and redder and darker and darker until it just faded while seeming to nearly freeze in space. The fact you can see the accretion disc is that these are originally high energy gamma rays time dilated so much some of them are stretched into the visible spectrum.

What you said at the end about this being a spiritual experience is so spot on. Between the subject matter, the story, the emotions, the visuals, and everything else, makes this transcend being just a movie and makes it become an EXPERIENCE that hits our mind, body, and soul. This movie is so incredible in the sense that despite such deep, mind-bending subject matter, it was able to be this deeply emotional on such a relatable level. I knew that for you as a parent, this one was gonna hit extra hard. The big takeaway for me, which you mentioned at the end too, is that true connection, true love, is such a deep and powerful emotion that it transcends time and space. It's so powerful that it exists beyond logic and reason. Absolutely recommend watching this a second time, since with the completely shifted perspective you go in with, it basically becomes a new movie that hits as hard, but just in a different way.
Here I am talking about music in movies again but MY GOODNESS Hans Zimmer outdid himself with this score. This is another case of a beautiful central theme that returns with various renditions throughout the movie to capture the emotions of the situation. The one that really stands out for me is the epic, haunting, synth-organ version. That starts at the beginning of Cooper and Mann's fight, with the parallel timeline shift going to Murph, culminating with Cooper docking the ship into the Endurance just gives absolute CHILLS. I watched this movie originally in theaters on what at the time was the biggest IMAX screen in the state, with sound blasting so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. That whole sequence in that theater is probably the greatest cinematic experience I've ever had. Something that you just feel in your core and never forget

And you know I'll be here right with you agreeing about the music! Hans Zimmer truly outdid himself. The music is another reason why I can't wait to experience this gem in the theaters again. The theme song played during the intense scene of them switching back and forth between Murphy and Cooper brought out soooo many more emotions just because it was so well orchestrated!

Some interesting facts about the film:
Nolan is a director who doesn't like to use CGI unless he has no alternative (for example the scenes in space), so to shoot the entire cornfield sequence at the beginning of the film, he asked them to plant multiple hectares of corn just to film recordings.
The film was released in 2014, but it was only in 2019 that the first photo of a real-life black hole was captured, and the black hole in the film is perfectly represented like the real images. But then how did they know how to do this for the film? During production, they sought out a team of scientists, physicists and researchers, who in turn used the accounts of none other than ALBERT EINSTEN!!! Yes, Albert Einstein was right all along about what a black hole would look like, his accounts and theories were right all along.

The music from Hanz Zimmer in this movie is still my favourite track of his. Even though he basically scored every major score for classics such as The Dark Knight, Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, Inception, Dune, Gladiator, Kung Fu Panda and so much more...and yet this is easily my favourite score from him. It absolutely made this movie into a masterpiece, he is an absolute genius when it comes to scoring these big orchestral pieces for movies. He is definitely one of the modern greats in the music industry. My favourite track specifically was the famous "docking" scene. The score was so emotional and beatiful. That whole theme for me perfectly captures the absolute mind bending defiance of humanity. That even in the most hopeless situations, that indomitable human will can accomplish the impossible. And the score captures that perfectly. It's so dramatic and at times feels hopeless but when the big orchestra comes in you could just feel the absolute desperation but also willpower cooper has in that moment. To me the quote they used a lot in this movie "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" perfectly imbodies that scene for me. I definitely recommend reading the whole poem. Even though it' short, I definitely consider it one of the best pieces of literature and it fits this movie perfectly. It's called "Do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas.
You should also definitely check out more Christopher Nolan movies, every one of his movies is absolute perfection and definitely one of the best directors of our time. I'm so glad he finally won his Oscar for Oppenheimer!
Also some cool fun facts about this movie:
The first thing you should know about Nolan movies is how he always likes to do things practically and as accurately as possible. He dosen't like using CGI, that's why most of the sets, action and stunts in his movies are practical. Of course when it comes to movies like this where it's heavily sci-fi, he obviously had to use a lot of CGI but still tried to limit it as much as he could. One of the coolest behind the scenes info is that the space suits the actors wore were genuinely working space suits and were built from scratch. The space suits came equipped with cooling tubes that carry water - just like real spacesuits. And they also possess functioning oxygen units. Hence, the actors could breathe comfortably during the long shooting hours. It's really amazing. Mary Zophres, the costume designer for Interstellar is so talented. She even had limited time to figure out the design and functionality of the suits but she crushed it anyway!
And back to the scientific authenticity of the movie. Christopher Nolan wanted Interstellar to remain as close to actual science as possible. As a result, he joined forces with the 2017 Nobel Prize for Physics winner, Dr. Kip Thorne, on the project. Keeping in line with Christopher Nolan’s desire to maintain scientific accuracy, Dr. Kip Thorne provided the theoretical equations for the wormhole and black hole simulation. (Since at that time we didn't even know what blackholes look like.) Paul J. Franklin and his team at Double Negative developed a new CGI software that could realistically represent scientific phenomena in the film. What's even more mindblowing is that by using their new unique CGI technology with super computers and calculations from experts in their field, they actually correctly guessed and predicted what a black hole would look like. In 2019 we discovered the first black hole humanity came across and scientists were able to photograph it, which was a historic moment. (You can look the picture up, "just google first black hole picture" or something like that.) The “Interstellar” black hole was also presented as a sphere and not two-dimensional, complete with disks of dust and gas that formed ring shapes. It appears Nolan’s black hole correctly portrayed the orange dust and gas effect of a real black hole before they knew what it looked like. So in the process of wanting to make this film as scientifically accurate as possible Nolan and his team made a scientific, discovery that would later be proved correct years later, which is absolutely mindblowing!

You’re right that it’s a spiritual experience, I think my entire world view changed after watching this in the theaters. So many exquisite details in this movie too, like their sandwiches are cornbread, only Brand and Cooper had love attachments and therefore they were able to succeed in their missions whereas everyone else had no attachments, the Endurance has 12 pods reminiscent of a clock and it was spinning quickly clockwise while they were docking. Too many good things that I can and have rambled on about.
    ARRIVAL next???

I just recently found out about this little detail but right before the robot blows up if you listen closely it says, "please don't make me". 38:28 Its crazy to me that the robot still tried to warn Romilly in some way, knowing it was out of its control.

I remember when this movie finished in theaters I simple stayed put in my seat for 5 or so minutes because I felt like I had been taken on an epic journey, but one I was a part of and not simply a spectator. I don’t think I’ve ever had a movie make me feel so heavy yet light at the same time. When I hear people say thing like “spiritual experience.” I know it wasn’t a unique feeling I had. And I love knowing that this movie had the same effect on others.

It was the reaction that millions of us had trying to wrap our heads around such a incomprehensible and unfathomable subject and and scenario...Hans Zimmers score throughout the film brings out the roller coaster of emotion. This is a movie about Love no matter how you slice it.

This movie is an absolute 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗖𝗘, my all-time favorite! I had the privilege of watching it in the theater, and let me tell you, it was a mind blowing experience. The visuals, the score, everything about it was pure cinematic magic. I heard they might bring it back to theaters for its 10 year anniversary, and if that happens, I’ll be there without a doubt! It’s not just a movie; it’s a cinematographic treasure by Christopher Nolan, who in my opinion is the best Movie Director of this era. If you get the chance to see it on the big screen, don’t miss it!

The docking scene is my favorite scene in movie history: the intensity, the special effects, the music, the consequences... there is no equivalent in my mind. It comes back into theaters on the 27th of this month in IMAX for the anniversary, and you HAVE to see it if they're showing it near you. I saw it three times in theaters, and I will tell you, the sound effects, right from the beginning, absolutely ROARED, so loud. But in the best way.

    • @SpaghettiYOLOKing
      @SpaghettiYOLOKing 9 дней назад +2

It's never lost its intensity for me. Every time, I'm on the edge of my seat. Plus the dialogue when Cooper is flying in, the music... the entire movie is so well written and shot, but I agree with you, that scene right there is probably the best overall scene because everything hinges on Cooper doing the impossible because 'it's necessary'.
Jonathan Nolan is such a good writer. I know Christopher helped with the screenplay, but this was a movie mostly done by Jonathan well before Christopher was on board to direct it. Jonathan had originally written it for Steven Spielberg. He also wrote Memento Mori and the screenplay for its adaptation, Memento. The Prestige is another one that is from his mind. All phenomenal stories and films.

This movie is so scientifically accurate (other than the tesseract inside the black hole, that is fiction), it correctly modelled what a black hole would look like BEFORE we ever actually photographed a black hole. (we have since seen a real black hole and the images are almost 1:1 with what the black hole in this movie looks like).

I just love this film so, so much. I remember seeing it for the first time in theaters. As I said in the lead up to your reaction coming out, seeing this film literally changed my life, and who I was as a person. Up until that point I wasn't a particularly caring person. I was nice to people, but only because being mean made me feel awkward and I didn't like people not liking me. Seeing this film, for whatever reason, made me a much more compassion and empathetic human being. Now I do care. I care for strangers just as much as I care for my friends and family. Now I'm kind to people not because being mean and people not liking me makes me feel awkward - but because I'm so incredibly in tune with how they feel when I do something that do be unkind hurts me in my bones. Using love, and empathy, and compassion to guide us when we make choices is what we should all strive to do 🤍
Fun fact: all the special effects were done *pre*production instead of post production like most films. Nolan doesn't like using green screens so doing it this way, when shooting the actors, he has screens and projectors around the set so they had real images to react to. So when you see Matthew or Anne or any of the other actors looking at something outside the spaceship or off in the distance - they are actually looking at something. Anne did an interview where she said the first time she saw the black hole while filming she found it so profoundly beautiful it brought her to tears.

If you listen closely when they're on the water planet, there is a tick every 1.25 seconds in the music. That tick is one full day on Earth. It's subtle, the first time through you just pay attention to the scene and the music that supports it, but when you watch it again, you realize the gravity (pun not intended) of the situation in that even slowly crawling down off the lander takes about 5 days of Earth time to do.
