    All of the criteria in this video unfortunately apply to me. It's really hard to live a normal life when you can't stay on task, lose focus, and repeatedly give in to impulses. My peers think I'm an idiot when they see me fumble, misunderstand instructions, and lose things. It's been this way since I was a child, when teachers would yell at me for not listening to them or having an extremely disorganized backpack. People think ADHD is just a joke or a minor inconvenience, but it can really be life-defining.

    I really think there's a possibility of me having this. I mean, just recently I perceived that I'm always lost in my own mind. I'm always daydreaming, talking to myself, talking to people I created in my head, losing my attention to everything. In school every task they make me do I get quickly distracted decorating it all with drawings of what I'm thinking about in the moment. I always don't pay attention to things that well and that can lead me to do things wrong and make teachers and my own parents mad as hell. I'm always forgetting everything, I have to note all things I have to do and tap it to my forehead to not forget it, and even so, I do. I find doing homework (principally maths) very hard, cause besides me not paying attention in class and daydreaming while teacher is speaking, I can't help but distract myself with everything, and even when I do focus, I cannot understand bs of what's going on in there. I'm doing this rn lol. Everything I do is disorganized, and when it's not, it's probably because I enjoy it alot. So yeah I'm talking this to my therapist
    Also I'm really scared because I think my parents are gonna b real mad if I end up having it and get a diagnosis. Cause, they think adhd is caused by multitasking (?). They say I do it so much it could cause me to have it. Idk I just want to kick them for their ignorance

  • @rustydeandarby
    @rustydeandarby 3 года назад +27

    1. Overlook or miss details: Yes, sometimes. I try so hard not to have this happen that I focus too much on such a small focal area that I sometimes miss huge things in other areas. Playing games of Chess helps exercise this, but that's just me.
    2. Difficulty remaining focused during certain tasks or conversations: Definitely, I find that trying to relate tasks to other things or making them into some sort of game or finding patterns in them makes it easier to do so. Until I occasionally become overcome by those patterns or mechanics and then find myself staring off into space thinking of a better way, lol!
    3. Do not seem to be listening or Paying Attention: There are times when someone can be a few feet from me and I'm looking directly at them and I can even be watching their lips move and I will have no idea what they had just said to me. It usually ends up with the other person getting frustrated or think I'm being rude or disrespectful. I never apologize for this but rather explain what had just happened.
    4. Difficulty following instructions: I only have this issue if there is a list of steps being given verbally. This usually is the cause of #'s 1, 2, and 3. lol. As long as I am able to write them down and repeat back, I'm good. Though the disinterest does tend to happy a LOT!
    5. Messy, disorganized, poor time management: This was an issue and sometimes still pops up from time to time with the messy and disorganized but that is probably something that someone sees it from the outside. There IS a method to my madness. As far as Time management, I have to give myself dang near an awesome rating on that these days as I can usually time tasks throughout my day/week as to priority and whatnot. Kind of like cooking big dinners. Cooking thanksgiving usually starts with prep the night before and then start getting things ready in the morning starting with what will take the longest and doing other tasks in between in the "filler" time. In my day to day, I may be washing, trimming flash and priming my miniatures. For clarification, I do custom painting for tabletop and board game miniatures on commission. Then it is usually paint, then things around the house while that layer dries and then back to painting and then something during drying and so on and so forth. I just realized that I'm starting to write WAY TOO much! I'm actually not really sure why I started this post in the first place... I need to get back to work on painting and dishes/laundry. It is my last day off! I'm taking points away from my score of awesome on time management for now... I know I deserve it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    6. No way, like I said.... I already spent too much time here, lol! Maybe this covers enough of the rest!

    I have been diagnosed with the non hyperactive one (ADD). I am not completely without hyperactivity. I just don't rock back and forth but I am known to fidget. One of my teachers in high school could testify to that. In fact I have her to thank for the testimony she gave. I was given paper copies of all forms including her testimony in those papers. I strongly recommend getting a cheap used document scanner (automatic feeder and duplex mode highly recommended) and scanning your papers. Take your time on this and then back them up. This is what I did one cold winter day when I had nothing else to do. The automatic feeder made the scanning go by so quickly, imagine the eternity that it feels like to load each sheet onto a flatbed scanner. While that will produce a more than acceptable scan it will be monotonous. Just don't overload the document feeder or you may get multiple pages fed at once or worse, a jam. I was cautious to avoid jams since those are my only copies and thankfully none got damaged. I don't know how I would replace them, asking the SSA for them can be an unnecessarily bureaucratic process. Now they are backed up on at least 2 external hard drives along with the original scans still on the computer.

    In many ADHD comment sections I see especially young people having difficulties communicating with their parents on this topic.
    To those, I just want to encourage you to make a diagnostic. Better even make two with different experts (not random pediatricians, genuine adhd experts).
    For parents it's often difficult to accept their child might be somewhat different from 'normal'. Their automatic conclusions often go the 'my child isn't crazy, they don't need a psychiatrist' route. That can be because they want to protect their child from being treated badly (if they're good parents) or themselves from redicule by their own peers (if they're not so great parents) etc. There's many reasons to first think this way.
    An official diagnosis might give you some leverage to be taken more seriously and having your arguments actually being heared and not repelled right away.
    And don't get discouraged just because one therapist rejects you. Not every psychiatrist or psychologist is knowledgeable about ADHD. Really take the extra time and look for someone who is actually an ADHD expert.
    Good luck to you all!

      @julyol119 3 года назад +3

      @@nataliemejia70 Did you get the phone then? It's true that our phones are exceptionally good at bombarding us with dopamine. This in return may make you feel like other activities aren't as rewarding and thus make it difficult to concentrate on them. Try doing a little dopamine detox (basically just turn off notifications in the services you are using, so that you only see the messages etc. once you deliberately open the app and don't get distracted by them all the time).
      Do this for at least a few weeks and see if it gets better. Our brains aren't used to that constant information influx, need down times to function properly, so if you are really having problems with attention that border on ADHD, it's at least worth a try!
      Also your age plays a role. The onset is usually very rare over age 12, if I remember correctly. Not saying its not possible, but usually connected to something. Most people just always have had it and it rather gets better then worse with age.

    I’ve already been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD for a few years now. I would say that 6 of 9 definitely apply but the other 3 certainly do not.
    The 3 that do not are:
    -Avoiding tasks that require lengthy attention.
    I have no problems with tasks that require I focus for a long period.
    -Being messy or disorganized.
    Although I can be it’s not a habit.
    -Don’t seem to listen or pay attention when spoken to.
    This is often more of a problem than straight up not paying attention as instructors always say that I look like I’m paying attention and engaged and I also feel I am as well. So when I miss a detail it’s difficult to communicate what I missed.
    Inattentive ADHD causes my brain to have moments where it pauses for a split second. This often causes me to loose my train of thought. Which really hampers my ability to right three sources, short stories, and exams within the usual allotted time.

Like not extreme but i have the symptoms and because of that i dont have a diagnosis but i still have problems like i dont keep friends if i dont see them a lot and i cant paying attention in clas whisch is why im out of school without friends and my life sucks. I always want something else which makes it hard to keep motivated. Sorry for the bad english

      ADHD is a spectrum disorder, so some people have mild cases and some have debilitating cases that severely affect their lives. It sounds to me that you have it bad enough that medication would help you focus and gain motivation so you can have a better life.

    I could never read when I was younger- I would just sound the words out, but would never know what the story of the book was. When I was 9, we used to have reading time, and whenever I read a book and my friend asked me about it, I would make up what it was about because I never absorbed any of the information. I never listened in class, especially English class where the teacher would read out the entire fiction book, so I had no idea what it was even about. When teachers were writing notes down for us to copy, I never knew what it said because I would just be zoned out. Even now, I struggle to read books, and I struggle to listen to audiobooks. The only way I can really keep concentration is when I listen to audiobooks and read the books at the same time, and even then its a little bit hard.
    Oh and I never listen when people are talking at the dinner table, or when people are having a conversation, but that's changing since I started noticing it.
    Do I have ADD, or do I just have low concentration levels? I don't experience hyperfocus, or many other symptoms.

    Dang I’ve been diagnosed by doctors but all the different meds they would give me felt like a bad drug trip and didn’t actually change anything. So I convinced myself I didn’t actually have this. But I check all those flipping boxes. I’m actually currently in a room filled with boxes Bc I haven’t managed to unpack, sleeping on a couch for the past 2 weeks because I haven’t even gotten my bed in yet. And I’ve mis-placed my wallet and keys. Dang dang dang. Damn.

    I do relate to some of these symptoms, but I never really struggled in school. I've always had trouble with procrastination (lots of reports finished the night before in college), but my grades rarely suffered. However, I could have definitely gotten a lot more out of my college experience if I studied more.
    What really bothers me is that I've always had spurts of creative energy, but I can never see a project through to the end. I will get really excited for a new story idea, or a new hobby, but the passion fizzles out after a few hours. Hard for me to know if that's "normal" laziness/lack of discipline, or if it's some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain.
    Both of my brothers have ADHD diagnoses now so it's making me wonder if I should get checked out too.

    Nice, 8-9 out of 9 😤 wish me luck ive been having a difficult time at college and im finally going to get tested over Thanksgiving break. The impulsively sucks tbh cuz in your head you say you're going to change how you go about things, but then it just never happens. Told myself this semester would be the one to change and I have online classes that I didn't even touch this semester because I loed to myself and said I can just pick it up in a week, and then never touched it. Then if you're used to taking any recreational substances (been smoking since 14), you relapse about just as quickly as you tell yourself no more, or just when you finally think you're done with it. Youll spend the last of your money on weed or nicotine without even thinking. You go to be around your friends to forget about the stressors in your life, cause you can't seem to focus on the schoolwork, which should be the main reason at school, but then messing around with friends instead of focusing on work just leads you back into the never ending circle. Your also smoke and you get brought back into in cause you're so impulsive that you just say fuck it and wanna have a good time. You love having conversations with friends to grasp an understanding of life, but when conversations are too long or other people interrupt; you get lost in the fog and miss a sentence or two. Then you think about how you missed that one sentence and then next thing you know you missed a few minutes of conversation and you don't even know how to reply to your one friend who is looking dead at you for a response. This is my life :/

      well, inattentive ADHDers don't have to speak a lot, many people of the inattentive type are rather quiet! for those the hyperactivity shows in the mind, it's a very good indicator if you for example can't shut up your thoughts!

    • @Junior-rz2gx
      @Junior-rz2gx 3 года назад

      @@emeseviragh9293 what if the hyperactivity don't show in my mind either? I often get distracted with my thoughts and think random stuff but i don't think its ever how other people describe it as if it was a million things at the same time. That's why I'm unsure as to whether I have it or I'm just a really bad procrastinator :/

    • @emeseviragh9293
      @emeseviragh9293 3 года назад +2

      @@Junior-rz2gx I'm no doctor in the field, you should definitely go to a psychiatrist in this field. but hyperactivity in thoughts can be ranged from sidetracking in your mind from one topic to another, or all of the sudden having another thought and completely forgetting what you were thinking about before. If you have any thoughts that you might have ADHD, try to speak to a professional. And remember, even if you don't have ADHD, that doesn't mean you don't need help!

    • @frida5680
      @frida5680 3 года назад +17

      Yes! Everyone experiences those things from time to time, ADHD is when those symptoms are severe and they cause you a lot of distress, and if they cause signinficant trouble functioning in day to day life

    • @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
      @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 3 года назад +7

      ADHD is a spectrum disorder, meaning one person could have these symptoms mildly and learned ways over time to cope with them so it barely impacts their life. Still others could have these symptoms so badly that it greatly impacts their life and need medication and coping skills to function.
