Angst vorm schwarzen Mann literally means to be afraid of the black man, which has nothing to do with skin colour btw. It's something like the bogey man, so its a black, dark man who lures in cellars etc (parents used to tell their small children not to go to dark places because of this figure (hard to explain when english is not your native language haha but i hope i got it right). Greets from Germany

That is one thing I like about Rammstein is Till's ability to create lyric's with double meanings. Also the symbolism in the video is so perfect.

A double opinion is also possible here. Black man can of course be translated as bogey man. But there is also evidence of a literal translation in the video. Especially the scene at the end where they eat a special dish.

This song blends both metaphorical and literal meanings of the lyrics. There are racial tensions being ramped up as a result of propagandidstic rhetoric that demonizes and dehumanizes those who are different from the speaker. In this case the "swartzen man" can be some one of a different race, religion, nationality, sexuality, or gender identity.
I, personally, see this song as an indictment of the people in my country who claim that "the best way to control a population is to disarm them"; when the actual reality is to keep a population under control is to keep them afraid of their own shadow.

@@justston188The proof is all over the video that is indeed a double meaning. Rammstein goes out of their way to make just about all the visuals allude to it. There are those that want to pretend otherwise for their own motivations but it’s obvious.

If we believe the rehearsals in Vilnius, they will play "Angst" in concert in their 2023 tour. It will certainly be a great moment !!!!
In addition to their great talent in music, video and live, they are wonderful storytellers! never forget to translate the lyrics which are always interesting and stick to the music !!

Thanks for listening to Rammstein yet again and giving your thoughts.
I have similar thoughts about it being about propaganda and the influence of media.
The two phrases that are repeated multiple times throughout the song "Alle haben Angst vorm schwarzen Mann." and "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" ("Everyone is afraid of the Boogeyman." and "Who is afraid of the Boogeyman?") refer to a German saying and a kids game (similar to playing tag). "Boogeyman" is the translation/English version of "schwarzer Mann" in that context. It is an evil entity that's been used to scare kids who don't behave. The literal translation of "schwarzer Mann" is indeed "black man" but it's originally not about skin color or race. Schwarz (black) refers to something dark and sinister. But it could have a double meaning so that "Boogeyman" and "black man" are the same, meaning people are afraid of different/foreign countries, cultures and peoples.
My interpretation of the video is that the Boogeyman is the media and politicians themselves or he is a creation of them. They use whatever is topical at the moment and form it into a Boogeyman for the people. Media (TV, computer) is creating and spreading the fear and the politicians/government (cheerleaders) fuel that fear and are cheering it on while seemingly providing the solution or cure against the fear. Providing the putative safety. They're giving isolation (bricks), violence/protection (guns) and surveillance (cameras) to the people and are selling it as "safety". In the end the people are consumed and controlled by their fear which eventually destroys them.
And the figures playing the instruments might represent lobbyism. They're wired. The wires go from their mouths over their heads back to the speaker's desk and stretcher where the crazed man is. The figures (lobbyists) are telling the crazed man (politician) what to say which is then broadcasted by the media into people's minds via TV/computer.
At the end Till (the lead singer) is destroying the TV, breaking free of the influence of the media and politicians. Calmness and bliss (color) return to their lives. That scene could also refer to the saying "ignorance is bliss", because they don't want to see people of other countries (the mother and her child) suffering therefore he is destroying the TV.

I will have to agree with your observation and I thought the same thing as you except for the double meaning at the end…which would work really well because Rammstein is well known for the double meaning and that one fits more in line than the others I’ve seen people write.

    • @brammeijboom1873

in my opinion the cheerleaders are the media, Till tied up behind the podium the politicians and the red in the tubes the propaganda fueling paranoia and xenophobia. Just turn off the telly/pc and the world becomes colofull again. The boogyman is you and your neighbour if you listen to much to the propaganda., you become the boogyman yourself.

Rammstein was a thorn in the side of the mass media from the start, too critical, too direct, too honest. After this Song/Video, the umpteenth (and for the umpteenth time unsuccessful) attempt was made to destroy the band in the media.

its NOT black men as in African black man... Swarzen mann was a German term in the late 1800s for a boogeyman and linked to the "CHIMNEY SWEEPs" which were seen as gypsy hustlers... it is NOT about race... do a rammstein lyric deep dive on this... also this was released a year or more ago

Dude its obvious to me as a german that the double meaning is absolut intended. The chocolat kisses at the end play really well in to show how short the period of time was were we had racist names for things in common use. It is not about race alone, but it plays a big part in the song.
