      Lebum would be completely humiliated by Bird. You say he doesn’t match up athletically, but you have to remember that Bird schooled some of the most athletic players of his time (all of whom would be great in todays game), including Jerome Kersey, James Worthy, Dennis Rodman, Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, etc. Bird is a highly underrated athlete, much quicker than the folklore around him admits. He was also a million times smarter than Lebum and could beat you in more ways. Better outside shooter, passer, help defender and didn’t need to go to 100 different teams to get a ring.

      Well, Akeem was the best player on the floor or 2nd behind Bird...don't be naive. Hakeem Olajuwon averaged 24.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks. Those are elite stats. Compare to what Jabbar averaged in his finals, 23.5 points, 9.1 rebounds. Celts could not handle Akeem. But they did everyone else.

      Not a very deep comment. Kareem played in the NBA finals at age 40, 41, and 42. Hakeem retired at age 39. Apples and oranges. Also Hakeem averaged 24.7 PPG on just 52.6% true shooting which is pretty inefficient. In the 14 other games he played in the 1986 NBA playoffs, he averaged 27.8 PPG on 58.3% true shooting. So yes, they very much handled Hakeem by cutting his volume and efficiency. And also he has 16 turnovers and only 11 assists, a putrid assist to turnover ratio. Also 11.8 rebounds? Charles Oakley, a power forward has a 20.5% rebound percentage against Celtics in 1986 playoffs. Hakeem’s rebound percentage was 15.9%, far from elite. That wouldn’t even crack the top 10 in % in the 1986 playoffs. Alton lister of the bucks also rebounded at 20% against the Celtics in 1986 playoffs. And again, on defense the Celtics averaged 111.9 point per 100 possessions against the rockets, while the rockets allowed the other 3 teams they played to 104.8 points per 100 possessions. So yes, the Celtics very much “handled” Hakeem. And Hakeem did not outplay bird, not even close.

    • @NickIntoTech
      @NickIntoTech Год назад +3

      @@roundtable3501 nobody else on the rockets could realistically Contain bird for long. Not a super hard day for him on the court. Averaged a 24p triple double.
      The 1986 Celtics atop of their 67 wins. literally had a literal Army of HOF defensive Big men they threw at the Dream. Somehow, he still put up about 25 12 3.2b.
      Yes lower than his other 86 playoff runs. but that’s to be expected with walton parish etc. So To compare their stats would be absurd.
      If it wasn’t for Akeem it wouldn’t have gone to 6.. Sampson struggled while Mchale averaged 26PPG in these finals.
      Also bird was still in his prime Akeem was not yet in his only 2 years in league.
      I’d still give Bird the edge and say he was best player on the court in this finals. I just think you are underestimating how well akeem played for what *all* the Celtics dished to him. *in only his 2nd year*

      Classic Sports Network did that a lot when they were rebroadcasting these games. Yeah they could have put it all the way at the edge, but it is what it is.
      Back then there were 4:3 televisions (which is what this game was broadcast in) and 16:9 televisions (common today). If someone is watching this on a 16:9 television, there will be black bars on the sides (like probably appear on your screen). To get rid of that, a person could select zoom-to-fit, which would make anything on the top or bottom edge disappear. So to keep the banner visible in zoom-to-fit, it has to be far enough from the edge when not zoomed in.

      @@davidpaz9389well when you have Len Bias and Reggie Lewis literally dying, what was supposed to be the franchise’s cornerstones for the next decade, that’s going to be really difficult to replace. That’s the equivalent of Kobe and Shaq dying right as Kobe was drafted. There goes 5 championships and in comes about a 30 year championship drought for them until Lebron comes along.
      Another example could be Steph Curry and Klay Thompson dying. Draymond Green as the team’s best player isn’t gonna get it done lol. The Warriors dynasty ceases to ever exist and would still ringless since the 70s.
      If it weren’t for Bias and Lewis’s death, the Celtics would’ve clearly won multiple championships throughout the 90s and perhaps early 2000s. I’d say around 3-4 extra rings. But then they probably wouldn’t have been bad enough to get Pierce and form that big three later on down the road? Idk but that’s the biggest reason why they went into a drought for that long. Just unlucky.
