I´ve been leaning to Lou´s distorted rhythm guitar being tuned down to D, so the song is played with the open E chord adding the typical sus-thing when he´s not singing, and then A barre chord 5th fret using the open B and E-strings for occasional effect like in There she goes again etc. It can be done with the open A chord too, but then sounded more right/heavier at the 5th fret. Of course I can be wrong and maybe Lou used the ostrich tuning which might explain why it´s hard to mimic the sound of that rhythm guitar. Vanessa Paradis made cover on her debut album I think, and they got pretty close to the Velvet sound in the arrangement.
Also, if you play the Sterling part in E instead, you get the open B-string as a nice drone which sounds cool. Ok, that works in D as well, maybe not as good.
The blues scale lick at the end of the chorus you do sounds really good. Sterling makes a few different variants and some day I´m going to look into it deeper. Last time i fiddled with it my conclusion was that it was more of an arpeggio with some bends, than a scale. Like starting with a halft step bend of the 6th or 9th a in the scale of F# and then descending like in the pentatonic but using the 7th and major 3rd, so it´ll be more like picking chord notes at the 2nd fret than strictly playing a scale.
That brings me to the last chord in the chorus. I think it should be an E(7) if you´re playing in D, and F#(7) if played in E. I´m not a theory guy, but it replaces the typical V-chord. Sounds like what you´re doing is to mimic John Cale´s last bars of dissonant piano on the guitar. VU must be the least transcribed of the influental rock bands.

Great lesson but what you describe as an A7#5 sounds more like an E7 or E7sus4 to my ears

Awesome stuff (as per usual) Jason, you're easily one of the best guitar/bass tutorial channels on youtube. Could we get a White Light/White Heat lesson please?

Found a video on youtube before, Sterling Morrison Full Tv interview 1986, MonosonicJukeJoint. He demonstrates some of his guitar playing and it sounds very different from your typical blues/rock-players. Read an interview many years ago that he was kicked (voted) out of blues band after VU was history, because of his atypical style. He had a fallout with an old friend because of this that were in the same band. He wanted him to stay, but respected the voting too much according to Morrison. To me it sounds like Sterling is picking up his influences from more of the early part of the century, than from the 50´s players.
Some new footage of the Velvets with a longer Sterling interview from 1969 here a 0245:
Dallas Peace Moratorium - October 15, 1969, SMU Jones Film. Check out the channel. There´s also short clips in this film of the Velvets playing I´m set free and Beginning to see the light.
Last time I checked this channel had four films, one of them being silent. Texas International Pop Festival - 1969, SMU Jones Film also has live music, but not sure if the Velvets are shown there. Still an incredible time document. Feels very strange, like if it was filmed yesterday, and yet a very different time.

@@diegobadilla5951 There´s a guitar solo, and there may very well be a rhythm guitar deeper in the mix too, I have to listen closer later. Some years ago I found a really good guitar tab for the celesta part, but I can´t find it anymore online. I should have the page with the tabs saved on a hard drive somewhere, will get back about it. Think it was from Songsterr or Musicnotes. One thing I picked up chord wise was the part "It´s just a restless feeling..." which sounds right with G Bm7/F# Em A and D. I also play it in the key of E which is fun, because then you have to approach the solo a bit different. Will try to put up a video in the future.
