some bonus stuff about mesh data transfer that i didnt mention: all jigglebones from the original model will be transfered, which includes francis' jiggly vest and louis' tie. i would recommend deleting louis' tie from the model youll mesh data transfer from and delete the jigglebone lines in the qc from both. if you're making first person arms for nick, i would recommend mesh data transferring from ellis' arms instead, as the hand mesh is literally identical but the suit could give unwanted results
A very interesting thing i have learned about modding survivor models over the years is how simple it is to make them, yet can be complicated based on the model. As long as you match the mod to the original bones/positions. It's fairly simple process. Of course the more complicated the model the more frustrating it can be when it comes down to weight painting. That is usually the biggest factor that can determine a good model VS a bad Model. I do a very similar trick with full mod replacements except if it has bones like Half Life Citizen bones. Then i pose the mod into the survivors original pose and go from there. It usually does work. However it really does come down to weight painting at the end of the day. Which is where the simple part can become complicated and very model dependant.
Hey I've been trying to figure all this stuff out i don't even know how to download the stuff you need for it and All I am trying to do is get the Texture files for Francis's Skin so I can try and make a Fallout 4 mod with his arm tattoos, seeing as you know what you're doing I'd love your help
you don't have to in the first place, it wont affect the final model. but in case you still do to make thing easier in blender i guess you would have to export the survivor texture from the game and convert it into a png to use in blender. the l4d2 survivor textures and the body textures of the l4d1 survivors are located in left4dead2/pak01_dir.vpk the names are based on the codenames for the l4d2 survivors (so mechanic_body_color for example for ellis) and the actual name for the l4d1 survivors so zoey_color for zoey. the head textures for the l4d1 survivors are located in left4dead2_dlc1/pak01_dir.vpk you extract the vtfs for them via gcfscape and then use vtfedit to convert them into pngs to use in blender
Wonderful guide, thankyou :) I was wondering however, how can i give louis Bill's arms (literally taking Bill's arms and sleeves, and putting them over so Louis has them) etc? Is this possible at all?
all youd really need to do is decompile bill's arms, use the smd of those in louis' arms qc and edit the cdmaterials path of the louis qc to point to the one in bill's qc and it should work
hey man, i have another problem. after i compile the QC file i am supposed to then view the MDL file, however i don't see it anywhere and there's nothing on the output folder too. console says: ERROR: \users\me\documents\myfolder\models\survivors\decompiled 0.74\survivor_mechanic.qc(247): - could not load file 'mymodel_smd' ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'survivors/survivor_mechanic.mdl'
well the issue is farily obvious: it cant find the "mymodel_smd" file. given how you named it i assume you messed up somewhere in the qc. make sure you end in .smd for the filename in the bodygroup

I have one problem, I can import textures into blender just fine but how do i import a survivors texture into blender?
