My grandparents had a 60 acre farm with 9 kids. My parents eventually build a house 200 yards from their house. My grandfather passed when I was 5 so for years I would go down to gram’s and cut her grass and spend hours drinking coffee, eating cookies and every once in a while eating her canned dill pickles. One Christmas she bought me and my cousin (who also likes pickles) a glass pickle ornament for Christmas. She has too since passed, but ever time I hang it in the tree I think of her. Thanks for coming up with this carving. I think I’ll make a few for my family in remembrance of her. Thanks Doug!
Doug, I have been carving since January 2022 at the Huntsville Alabama senior center. Our instructor was Deward "Dee" Boyd. I say was because he passed in October. What a loss to many. Since then I have watched many of you videos and you are an inspiration. Thanks for all your hard work.
Lol. My dog does the same thing with every wood chip. Sometimes his poops look like MDF board.
Ha!!! Mine too!!! Ends up covered in chips after falling asleep at my feet.
Doug your carvings are coming to life, the little fluffy one is great.
And oh so Lifelike!
@@captainsquee471 I want her,💙but my cat's won't allow that ,hahaha
Watching that dog eat the wood chips has been the highlight of my day!!!
You should totally do another one with a face! Do a jalapeno wearing a sombrero while you're at it!
He might get sued by Jeff Dunham if he puts it on a stick.
Ahhh, but this way, the jalapeño IS the stick!
Loved how Finn was so patient and serious when you were reading him the story, and the other wee dog is so cute too. This is a project that I feel I could do and like the idea. Very realistic! Thanks for another great demo.
The glasses was a great touch, too!
i was depressed today and you just changed that.thanks
Finn looked like he enjoyed the story . The wife thought Gwen was pretty cute . Cool carving thanks Doug .
That little guy is adorable. What size batteries does it take? Lol
Awww ... it's hard to concentrate on your carving with that adorable doggie in the background.
Learned of the German tradition last week. Lived in Germany 7 years hadn't heard of the tradition. One of my daughters asked if I would take up the tradition. So I just wondered if you, by any chance, had carved a pickle and lo and behold you have taken up the tradition too. You made my day. I know what a pickle looks like but to see you knock one out, what can I say but thanks again Doug for another great tutorial. Oh! And a Merry Christmas Doug to you and your family.
Why have i not watched this video before!? A PICKLE!!!! I have a pickle tattoo, so this just made my day!! Thanks, Doug!
Gwennie sure stole the show a couple of times...so cute with the wood shavings on her nose!!!
Loved the pickle project! In addition to the Christmas Pickle, there's a great children's book by Marc Brown called Pickle Things. You should check it out.
Very helpful video, I carved 2. I used an eye screw at first, it looked awkward. Then I drilled the hole longer and inserted a small cotter pin, glueing it with a drop of Gorilla glue. Made for fun, quick projects giving one to my Godson’s child as part of his birthday present. Great family tradition. I really enjoy your videos.
Ok, I watch for the carving...but you definitely have one of the sweetest doggies ever!
She's just the cutest little dog
Good Friday Doug and Finn & Gwen!
Christmas stories and a carve with Doug and Finn...loved it, do more
Thanks for a great channel, love your videos!! I started whittling basswood a year ago… after carving cottonwood bark for a couple years.
I’ve carved several Christmas pickles and given some away to family. Recently decided to “add a face” to one… my grandson loves the “Santa pickle”!!
Gwen is sosososo adorable. Loved seeing the wood chips stuck to the nose. Sorry Doug, loved the pickle but what a pickle when puppy steals the show. ;););)
Nikki, I 100% agree with you! 🤗
Awww pretty cute helper you have there Doug
Love the dogs in your video! Nothing like wood carving and furry kids.
the fluff muffin is adorable... thanks Willow. Christmas pickle?? lol very cute idea
A pickle and a puppy..how cute! You have such a good eye Doug.
Awe how beautiful is the wee yorky . We have two and they keep us amused and busy and give loads of love 😀
This is great Doug. Nice of you to babysit Gwen. I am going to try to make this as my first attempt at carving.
Christmas Pickle , why that’s a dilly of an idea ,
you are amazing, never change.
Great tutorial and Finnegan is a natural 👍 Alex made these last year & I don't know how true the history is behind hiding the pickle in the Christmas tree, but every German I've talked to said they never did this as a child. Our friends kids loved trying to find them. They blend in really well once deep inside a decorated Christmas tree.
From a moravian star to a pickle Thanks Doug good beginner projects
This is hilarious😂 Love the glasses on your dog too😁
Awe cute Yorkie and cute pickle!
Great idea...thanks....and thanks for the " You'll have to buy 500 at a time" comment...hits home.
Cheers from Canada North and Merry Christmas
That little puppy is so cute and she so funny thanks for sharing God Bless 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Happy Thanksgiving
A tip on the hook - I use fish hooks - gold - and clip off the bend to the sharp into the trash. The eye and shaft are then inserted with super glue into a like sized hole drilled by my Dremel tool with a tiny diamond 'drill'. Love how you have changed in painting and give the tube to object example. Martin Oh - a stout lineman pliers or heavy cutter is needed.
That does look like a fun project for a beginner like me. The painting was very entertaining, there were times I thought I was watching Bob Ross. Great video.
Cheers
A Pickle, a cute Yorkey, and your dog, I love it, thanks Doug!
Great story Doug and I love how your Collie also has 👓 like you 👍
The Bob Ross of wood carving.
Doug the puppy was beautiful loved how he watched you ,plus I personally enjoyed the atmosphere and the story of this topic
*roflol* Doug, this little pup (Gwen?) chasing the wood shavings is so cute! I've been laughing all the time! Never heard about this German tradition of hiding a pickle... and I live in Germany for almost 50 years (...my whole life) now 😀😀😀 Okay, maybe it's a Bavarian thing 😨😨😨
What a great beginner project ..good going Doug
That’s great to see the dog come to life on top of your desk that was funny enjoyed the video thanks Doug
Oh ma gooooodness! Thank you Willow! This is the cutest video! 😅
Hello Doug, I love the beginning!I love your puppys dogs(Finn and Gwen) 😇
Thank you Mr Doug,
a new tradition for us ,
When I 1st read your description I Poor Doug has lost it. He is carving pickles now. Good video.
This was an exceptional episode. I got to watch Doug carve while watching Gwen play with the chips!
Finn's patience in wearing glasses while listening to the pickle story was also very precious. Finn is an exceptional pup.
Looks like a real pickle. Great video. I loved the dogs. Gwen is so little. 🦃🎃🍁🏵️💖🏵️🌾🍂
I just love this video. You do such a wonderful job on these videos. I have learned so much from you. This morning I am carving yet another pickle for a grandson.
loved how your dog paid attention to the story. :))
We used a green glass pickle ornament, but I like the idea of one being hand-carved by family member and becoming a family heirloom. Makes it extra special.
1:35 pretty sure one of your carvings just came to life and started walking over your table or is that just me
You do such good work and W/O glasses! Geez. Thanks Doug!
Doug.since you like Christmas stories.you may want to Google the one about the Christmas spider.it explains the reason there is tinsil on the Christmas tree and how it got there
I love all your little critters running around on your desk😃 and thank you the pickle, for a beginner . I should be able to do this one.
We have had 1 for 6 years now we hide it in the tree and let the kids look for it and the 1 that finds it gets to open their present first and pick who goes next. Mine is glass but really like you're wood version happy holidays
Thank you great fun and excellent film loved it . Finn and Glen add to the magic. My grandson loves Finnegan his name is Finnley and I call him Finn. Gratitude. Regards Gareth Wiltshire UK.
i started busting out the old world santa's and the larry's happy trees when i saw the vids...easy projects that will make great gifts this year. Thank Doug.
Nice! I had never heard of this and thought the poem was cute. Just change the word "glass" to "bass" and you've got your wooden pickle properly identified. Great gift project. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing the pickle story. I've never heard of it before.
LOL I loved the look the dog is giving you during the Christmas Pickle story.
Ha ha ! I'm hoping to get a bit pickled myself, this Xmas.
All the best Doug to you n your's. 👍 ✌
I love your little helper funny how he plays with the wood chips. Merry Christmas to you and your family.😀 Jim's wood shop.
Love Finn's new glasses. And the puppy 'slide' at 3:50 was adorable. I think I can do this project; finally put my new carving tools to work, but I only have cats.
Good morning Doug ! The pickle looks good enough to eat ( I like crunchy pickles). Great beginner project. So sweet how Fyn listened to the story then winked at you when you finished 💖 . And the other fur baby just precious. Great video. 👍👍😊
Getting some basswood this weekend. Can't wait. Carved my first stick chicken the other day
I don't know what I love more, the story or the pickle. This is going to be a new tradition in my house thank you.
Doug your little friend is very amusing and maybe should be a feature of future videos as it had me in stitches as I watched it trying to fathom where all the wood was flying from.
Hi Fynn so you have a wee friend over to play with while Dad carves his pickle - Cheers Doug.
Love the new Supervisor! :D
She’s adorable! ❤
Great intro with Finn to a great video. Used all your inspirational ideas, but never came up with a Christmas Pickle.
Love the woodcraft room guard dog.
I like pickles. Loved seeing the puppy getting wood chips on her nose.
Great, I have a couple days of project time, lots of grandkids and great g/k scattered to send a Christmas adventure to.
Love the variety of carving subjects you present
Entertaining as usual
Thanx Doug
Your not a bad story teller
And omg I love your little buddy! Too cute! (The dog) lol
Easy beginner project, beginner - that's me!
Just loved it good Canadian humour
Lololol... I love your dog! He's wearing those glasses while you're talking I haven't even barely started the video but I had to comment...
Hi Doug,
Nice project. Try cutting the hook and barb end off a 1/0 fish hook. Nice cheep hanger from your tackle box.
Wait...my wife told me this pickle in the tree was a thing...i thought she was shooting me a line....lmao...great beginner project Doug....cheers
Watch your video on the 5minute Wizard and I blew through 2 noses then I decided to try your pickle. For something so simple it was some what challenging but we made it through. I’ve done the Wizard before with very little problems this time not sure what happen like you mentioned in other vids practice and more practice many thanks for all the tutorials.
Gwen was very entertaining ❤
Great video Doug. We have been hanging pickles on our tree for many years. However, they always been ceramic or resin. I watched this video last night. Tonight I carved 7 pickles. I have 5 more to go for my family. I don’t have the right green paint though. I’ll pick up a bottle of hunter green so I can give them out soon so they can go up on their trees this year and probably for many years to come. It has been a lot of fun making these quick little ornaments. Thank you for the great idea. Happy holidays my friend.
I always enjoy seeing the reindeer and the tree farm, that was a great intro reading the story. But your mini pup with the wood chip on him nose was so cute! Enjoyed your video very much.
Love the video and the little dog was so funny!
To be honest, I was expecting a face! Love the puppy interaction.
Finally a carving project I have a shot at making. Thanks Doug!!
I haven’t picked up a knife and a piece of wood in years. I went got my tools and made the pickle. Thank you for these recent videos. Going to try another one of your videos
Excellent. Have some friends in PA . Be sending them one. Thanks Doug
Thanks Doug, I think this is the video that makes me buy the knife. I recently bought a strop for my culinary knives, and my life has been changed, thanks to you for that. I may never use a steel again. I've been wanting to buy a woodcarving knife and jump in.
Love the pickle idea
Great project & confidence booster for a newbie like myself! We don't have dogs anymore but our cat watched me the entire time while the chips were flying! :-)
Love this. Gonna make this next. Just ordered the Sasquatch shirt to support you. Keep up the good work!
Very nice! Well done Doug! 👍😁
How fun, and a new family tradition, thanks Doug.
Thanks doug. I’ve been saving this video. Tonight’s the night. We have a pickle already but now I’ll have another and a tradition. Thanks so much.
Super cool project, super cute puppy. Peace
Fun carve, thanks Doug!
While simple, very instructive. Love the first with your buddy with glasses.
The intro was too funny! Love it! Great idea! We’ve had glass and chocolate Christmas pickles on our trees for years but this will definitely be a welcome addition not to mention make a great gift!
