As a cyber security specialist, I have to say that my best tip for protecting your home network is to simply hide your ssid. This makes it so that your network's name isn't broadcasted to just anyone who is close enough to connect; so in order to connect one must type in the hidden network name and password. Stay safe out there!
You are a Cyber_Idiot... This makes your wireless less secure because all of your connected devices are broadcasting the SSID looking for your AP. There are many free tools available that will sniff it out in seconds. And the additional traffic caused by the SSID not being broadcast makes it easier to crack. Please stop propagating this horrible idea.

A better move would be to change your WiFi password settings to WPA2. But Mac filtering is even more effective, while Mac Addresses CAN be spoofed it usually just becomes too much work at this point and the hacker tries another network.
Always turn off the location tracker for everything. Never share your vacation/trip photos until you've come back. Never check in at locations. Never post or upload anything to the internet that you want private.

Use a different password for every account. Make sure each one is long, a mixture of numbers and lowercase/capital letters and only something that you would know and be able to remember. This will make it significantly more difficult for a hacker to guess your password, thus making your account more secure and immune to hacks.
TheRaicomm You can store all these passwords in KeyPass.Its a free software, and by using some tricks with the .db (database) (sync it to dropbox for example) you can have it available anywhere!
Keshaire!!! Paper trails are harder too access and only a limited number of people can use it. Anything you store on your computer, including passwords, anyone in the world can access it. Don't save important shit on your computer. Also how is someone "finding that shit and reading it" any different from a robber stealing your hard drive.
MAC address filtering does not technically make your network safer, it only creates the illusion of security... usually enough to stop a "low level" hacker.

Either format the hard drive using free software that's out there (like Eraser, and use the DoD setting) or 2.) Get a second ethernet card and use it as a hardware firewall. another way for people to manage to put that extra level of internet network security is to enable "hide SSID" or "Closed Network" on your WiFi options. ISP should be able to assist with this setting getting enabled. It makes it where devices going by that don't already have the credentials of the network and have to scan for nearby networks are unable to see the WiFi network.
SSid filtering is very effective at keeping out snoopers, and when paired with mac filtering and a secure password. It'll keep out all but the most determined hackers.
When in doubt, SSH out. While it may be a slight pain at the beginning to set up, if you have a spare PC lying around with nothing to do, you can give yourself a secure tunnel to access anytime, which can keep an extra hands off what you are doing while at public cafes.

MyWOT is a great browser extension for online web safety. If you use MSE, make sure to enable the "scan removable drives" tick so it also checks USB sticks and CDs for viruses. If you are worried something might be dangerous on Windows, create a restore point just in case. When installing something, don't just click "Accept" without reading the page first (excluding the TOS, unless you plan on stealing) the installer might come packed with a toolbar you don't want and should be unchecked.
My -2- 5 cent's Tip1: use different usernames/passwords for every site you create an account on. Tip2: use a password safe (like lastpass) to generate and store complex passwords. Tip3: use two-way/multifactor authentication wherever possible. Lastpass, Google, Hotmail and Facebook (to name a few) support this. Tip4: don't download/install cracked software (or pr0n ;))... Especially not on the same machine you do financial transactions on. Tip5: don't do financial transactions on a public (airport,hotel,starbucks,etc) network or computer or use a VPN (from a trusted provider) if you have to or use a mobile (3/4G) data connection. Bonus tip :) use a live operating system like TAILS to do your banking and online shopping. This can even be run in a virtual environment with vmware player or oracle virtualbox.
Heres a tip. When making passwords use a pattern on the keyboard. This way its not associated to you in anyway so a hacker cant guess it based on information about you.
1. Enable multifactor authentication WHENEVER possible 2. Always enable security on your phone. 3. Enable the ability to remotely wipe your phone and know how to do it if it gets lost 4. Make sure your primary email password is DIFFERENT from every other password. Many sites use your email to reset your password for that site. If a hacker gets your email account password he then may be able to more easily access your other accounts too. 5. If you can, connect to a VPN on public networks
Security hack: If you can create a custom question for your security question, make it a word or phrase only you know, but half of the phrase in the question and the other half in the answer.
It wasn't Tor service that was compromised. It was the software bundles (Firefox). And it was the old Firefox 14 that had a vulnerability. If you are using the new Tor browser, you should be fine, and keeping it updated always can save the headaches.

AFAIK, Mac OS X grew out of BSD which inherited the kernel OS structure of Unix. That makes protection of the core functions of the system much easier. Both can be unsafe in the hands of a careless user but it's easier to secure a Mac.

Choosing something that is so extremely random that there is absolutely no way a hacker could trace it back to you may not be the best route; ideally you would choose three relatively random words to set as your password (the more the better tho) and the less you tell to others also helps.
When not at home I shut off the power strip that all my computer/ wifi are connected to. It may not be a real safety net but it make me feel safer when I'm not on the systems and I even have seen a reduction in my electrical bill.
Here's what you do: Order several pizzas, a portion of the purchase goes to Breast Cancer Awareness, then when you get home you should secure your wi-fi. The rest of that time will be spent doing what you want to do.
Google chrome settings > Show advanced settings > Manage Saved passwords > DELETE ALL OF THEM BECAUSE THEY CAN BE SHOWN and that anyone with access to your laptop can view it all.
And there's the fact that when you open windows explorer and click the desktop tab you can see a File Folder place holder. This is only really practical if you put this under a directory IMO.
Something else to add is the WPS security button to protect your wireless router is actually getting you into trouble, hackers just have to crack a smaller bit security compared to your wpa2 or other preference with the 256 bit encryption, in laments terms if you are already adding your password protection on a router with its standard 256 bit encryption, you hurt yourself and crest a back door which is weaker, when you turn on WPS. So keep it off!! : )

try to upgrade your internet connection encryption, ask your isp about it. also don't use a single password for all of your online accounts, have a few and rotate through them. i know that google doesn't allow you to reuse old passwords, so changing them at least every three months is a good practice.
As a cyber security specialist, I have to say that my best tip for protecting your home network is to simply hide your ssid. This makes it so that your network's name isn't broadcasted to just anyone who is close enough to connect; so in order to connect one must type in the hidden network name and password. Stay safe out there!
You are a Cyber_Idiot... This makes your wireless less secure because all of your connected devices are broadcasting the SSID looking for your AP. There are many free tools available that will sniff it out in seconds. And the additional traffic caused by the SSID not being broadcast makes it easier to crack.

But Mac filtering is even more effective, while Mac Addresses CAN be spoofed it usually just becomes too much work at this point and the hacker tries another network.

Use a different password for every account. Make sure each one is long, a mixture of numbers and lowercase/capital letters and only something that you would know and be able to remember. This will make it significantly more difficult for a hacker to guess your password, thus making your account more secure and immune to hacks.

MAC address filtering does not technically make your network safer, it only creates the illusion of security... usually enough to stop a "low level" hacker.
I'm a Network Administrator and I love most of these tips. though the MAC filtering may not always work because someone can come come in and hack that easily.

I've been a tech junkie for over a decade now and have never had any breeches in my security, aside from the occasional bug/virus quickly squashed. Knowing what my family and friends get into i provide these tips.
1- Never assume your safe because you have third party protection services
2- Close out pop-ups with the ALT+F4 command hotkey
3- Passwords don't have to be long, just scrambled. Make up words and use symbols
4- Don't look at porn from other countries servers
Use anti-malewarebytes against maleware. It's free, reliable and has very good reviews. Virusses aren't the only problem these days.

Here's my security tip. If you have an old computer that you don't use, because you just got a new computer, do one of two things.
1.) Either format the hard drive using free software that's out there (like Eraser, and use the DoD setting)
or
2.) Get a second ethernet card and use it as a hardware firewall. There are a few free hardware firewalls out there (one of 'em being Sophos UTM).

another way for people to manage to put that extra level of internet network security is to enable "hide SSID" or "Closed Network" on your WiFi options. ISP should be able to assist with this setting getting enabled. It makes it where devices going by that don't already have the credentials of the network and have to scan for nearby networks are unable to see the WiFi network.

SSid filtering is very effective at keeping out snoopers, and when paired with mac filtering and a secure password. It'll keep out all but the most determined hackers.
If you want to connect to someone elses wifi you can try typing the network name as password and sometimes it will work.

When in doubt, SSH out. While it may be a slight pain at the beginning to set up, if you have a spare PC lying around with nothing to do, you can give yourself a secure tunnel to access anytime, which can keep an extra hands off what you are doing while at public cafes.

For the security questions, I enter the real answer backwards. Easy to remember, yet totally secure and hard to think of.
MyWOT is a great browser extension for online web safety.
If you use MSE, make sure to enable the "scan removable drives" tick so it also checks USB sticks and CDs for viruses.
If you are worried something might be dangerous on Windows, create a restore point just in case.
When installing something, don't just click "Accept" without reading the page first (excluding the TOS, unless you plan on stealing) the installer might come packed with a toolbar you don't want and should be unchecked.

Tip1: use different usernames/passwords for every site you create an account on.
Tip2: use a password safe (like lastpass) to generate and store complex passwords.
Tip3: use two-way/multifactor authentication wherever possible. Lastpass, Google, Hotmail and Facebook (to name a few) support this.
Tip4: don't download/install cracked software (or pr0n ;))... Especially not on the same machine you do financial transactions on.
Tip5: don't do financial transactions on a public (airport,hotel,starbucks,etc) network or computer or use a VPN (from a trusted provider) if you have to or use a mobile (3/4G) data connection.
Bonus tip :)
use a live operating system like TAILS to do your banking and online shopping. This can even be run in a virtual environment with vmware player or oracle virtualbox.

Heres a tip. When making passwords use a pattern on the keyboard. This way its not associated to you in anyway so a hacker cant guess it based on information about you.
1. Enable multifactor authentication WHENEVER possible
2. Always enable security on your phone.
3. Enable the ability to remotely wipe your phone and know how to do it if it gets lost
4. Make sure your primary email password is DIFFERENT from every other password. Many sites use your email to reset your password for that site. If a hacker gets your email account password he then may be able to more easily access your other accounts too.
5. If you can, connect to a VPN on public networks
Security hack:
If you can create a custom question for your security question, make it a word or phrase only you know, but half of the phrase in the question and the other half in the answer.
It wasn't Tor service that was compromised. It was the software bundles (Firefox). And it was the old Firefox 14 that had a vulnerability. If you are using the new Tor browser, you should be fine, and keeping it updated always can save the headaches.
basic security tips:
1: to avoid unnecessary ads, millionth viewers and random s3x pop ups, get MVP hosts file
2: to avoid random usb viruses turn off auto run feature completely
3: antivirus and antimalaware/spyware is not the same so get both
4: make system restore points before you install/uninstall software
5: use programs like Ccleaner to fix your temporary files/registry
6: check cpu/internet usage for unaccounted spikes to detect if you are compromised
Never give a password tip, some people will ask you. "whats your favourite food?" your password tip is "my favourite food", they could easily hack your computer.
This is a good episode, dealing with very pertinent information. Now if someone would just make a video showing "HOW" to do these things in detail... Because if you don't already 'know' about these precautions and security measures, then chances are, you don't already know 'how' how to set them up. (Like me)
AFAIK, Mac OS X grew out of BSD which inherited the kernel OS structure of Unix. That makes protection of the core functions of the system much easier. Both can be unsafe in the hands of a careless user but it's easier to secure a Mac.
5) Last and best tip: use your common sense! Don't click on everything that blinks and has a flashy color when surfing, only insert private stuff like payments when the page is encrypted (green icon next to your link), etc. Good luck out there!
Choosing something that is so extremely random that there is absolutely no way a hacker could trace it back to you may not be the best route; ideally you would choose three relatively random words to set as your password (the more the better tho) and the less you tell to others also helps.

When not at home I shut off the power strip that all my computer/ wifi are connected to. It may not be a real safety net but it make me feel safer when I'm not on the systems and I even have seen a reduction in my electrical bill.

Google chrome settings > Show advanced settings > Manage Saved passwords > DELETE ALL OF THEM BECAUSE THEY CAN BE SHOWN and that anyone with access to your laptop can view it all.
another option for protecting your Wifi is to not broadcast SSID makes it harder to connect but much less noticeable

And there's the fact that when you open windows explorer and click the desktop tab you can see a File Folder place holder. This is only really practical if you put this under a directory IMO.
Something else to add is the WPS security button to protect your wireless router is actually getting you into trouble, hackers just have to crack a smaller bit security compared to your wpa2 or other preference with the 256 bit encryption, in laments terms if you are already adding your password protection on a router with its standard 256 bit encryption, you hurt yourself and crest a back door which is weaker, when you turn on WPS. So keep it off!! : )
when signing to a possibly unsecure website tell a wrong name and don't put important stuff on there until you are sure of the websites trustability.

This may not work for everyone but I just grew a really awesome beard and I put pictures of me and my beard everywhere all over social media and as my security picture on my log on. People know better than to mess with someone with a beard.
For file protection/hard drive protection a free program called truecrypt helps a lot with multiple protection levels
My tips is
1. Buy a VPN.
2.Dont use any social media.
3.If u cant buy a VPN then hide your ip.
4. Dont use random WIFI they can hack you in seconds.

you can take it to the next level by usning different harddrives and then cryt all your files for the same system as above.
try to upgrade your internet connection encryption, ask your isp about it. also don't use a single password for all of your online accounts, have a few and rotate through them. i know that google doesn't allow you to reuse old passwords, so changing them at least every three months is a good practice.
