I find it interesting that it would even be a question if the R3 would be enough, if people don't mind 24mp. Outside of that, the limitations are pretty minor. If money isn't a worry, of course the R1 will give you more. But if you just want a highly capable camera, you won't be disappointed with an R3
R3 shooter here and everything you said I agree on. The R3 for me is a perfect camera, especially the compact form factor for a pro gripped body. Wish they kept the R1 just as small. For me the only feature I want in the R1 is the pre-capture. I have it on my Olympus and it’s surprisingly more useful than I expected.
Currently renting R3 now and can say I haven’t been disappointed. The low megapixels were a concern at first, but once I began to understand the power of its tech underneath it. I’m definitely looking forward to a future purchase of it 💯☺️
Why is low mega pixel concern? And is 24mp low? I'm just asking for before getting it. I'm considering taking it for weddings. For weddings 24 would be enough, right?
The Nikon D5 that I used for many years was very comparable to the R3. I am actually surprised Nikon hasn’t made an R3/R1 equivalent pro body yet with a lower megapixel sensor. I’m sure they will eventually.
@@HarryCollinsPhotography Yes, but it´s very hard to have a great ISO performance with 46 MP... Even my Z6 (24 MP), it´s better than the Z8 in iso performance, however the Z8 it´s a FANTASTIC camera, the best that i had till now!
R3 all day, every day! I’ve been one of the biggest advocates of this camera since its release. Super clean, super crisp details, amazing AF - and feels great in the hands. It just became a part of me, more than any other camera had before. Love it for stills and video alike. I only started shooting RAW *video* a few weeks ago, and despite my hundreds and hundreds of hours using the R3, I only shot 4K MP4 - I never realized it could do 6K60 RAW! I thought 6K30 was the limit! What a buffoon! 🥴 Mostly my own ignorance but I will say, that feature was not marketed well, nor implemented in a noticeable way (UI shows 4K when shooting 6K! 😆) 4K120 not including even a separate audio file is completely frustrating, as I always love including at minimum the ambient sound from a scene. And shooting 4K120 for a long session was the only time my camera got close to overheating. I never really pushed it after that. But not a ton of other gripes, as you. Not having dual CFX is probably the other major one. Not being able to customize buttons more isn’t a deal breaker but no joy there. So it seems the R1 will fix our main complaints and be “the perfect camera”! Counting the days!
Agree with all of that...I have seen a few people say they had heat issues with 4k120...I must be an anomaly...I shoot 120fps heavily...85% of the time and 6k 15% roughly...and no heat issues there. Not complaining :)
Terrific video! And your shots and video captures are just spectacular I did recently pick up an R3 and got a great deal on the body. I absolutely love it and it makes me want to take more pictures and expand my creativity which is all you could ask from a camera. Cheers!
thanks for the video, I want an R3 now lol. Very interesting to have your insights and thinking about the 2 cameras and can't wait to watch your reviews and comparison on the 2 Canon Flagships !
I have the R6 mark ii, again 24megapixels of beautiful image quality. I only shoot stills and rarely use video. All the reviews I've seen of the R3 talk about the stunning image quality, which let's face it, is what it's all about. I think I need to look for an R3 because like you, I prefer the lower megapixels. Appreciate your time and great images, take care, from across the pond.
After owning two Canon R3 cameras for sports photography, I've come to see the R1 as essentially the R3 Mark II, but enhanced with the advanced features of the Canon R5 Mark II. In comparing the R3 to a Canon R5, I ultimately decided to go with two R5 Mark II cameras with add-on battery grips. The R5 Mark II's offers the superior-like features of the R1 while boasting a 45 MP sensor, which provides the advantage of tighter cropping. I found that any increase in noise at equivalent ISO settings was negligible and easily manageable in post-processing. I'll observe Canon's future developments with the RX camera. Meanwhile, the upcoming Canon R6iii features should reduce the R3's relevance, as the R6iii will rise to become a superior and affordable model.
Really great stuff here, man. Photos and videos both, very impressive. If it were up to me, and if I didn't want my wife to have me locked up, I'd pick up both the R3 AND the R1! However, an avid hobbyist like myself simply can't justify spending quite that much on a camera body. So as to keep peace in the house, I think it's going to be the R5 Mk II that finds its way into my Christmas stocking. That pre-capture really seems to be an excellent feature. But you've made it clear that the R3 can be a superb wildlife camera. Well done!
I just wrapped a trip where I shot the R5 II, R3 and R1 all together and I found the R5 actually outperformed the others in a lot of ways with birds anyway. It's a fantastic camera. You won't be disappointed.
@@HarryCollinsPhotography Glad to hear that! My R5 II actually just arrived yesterday. Because of my job, all I had time to do was register it and the battery grip with Canon, format the cards, update the firmware, and get the batteries fully charged. Probably won't be until this weekend that I'll really have time to get into it. Makes me look forward to the weekend even more than usual!
I just picked up the R3 used for 3,330.00 shutter count is under 1,000. For whatever reason the price is dropping on used R3 cameras fast. Probably because lots of people are trading in for the R1. Anyway seeing your review really helped me make that plunge.
For me, the internal GPS is very important - no additional effort required. Just switch it on and you're done. What I would also like to have is more customer programs in the camera.
Stellar pictures but I'm not surprised. The output from the R3 is superb. The best from Canon. You're so right about the crop capability. The level of details is excellent. Honestly the R3 makes the R1 looks overpriced at this point. Sure 2 cf express would have been great, same with clog 2 but more fps (?! ) Improved eye af control ( already excellent for me) etc Doesn't deserve that price difference.
I have to say I agree...while I knew the R1 would have a higher price tag, I cannot say confidently that it is ballpark $2k better than the R3 at this time based on specs. Anxious to find out though.
I shoot wildlife with both Nikon Z and Canon R system and prefer the latter due to Canon’s superior AF tracking performance. Just let go of my R3 and will get a R5ii. Not too sure about the R1 though but I know I’m gonna miss the clean high ISO images produced by 24mp stacked BSI sensor……..
hi Harry Like you, I don't care about more megapixels. I have been considering buying the Canon R5 MK II. but deep inside I was very doubtful. When I saw Fabian Fopp's video about the Canon R1, I decided to go for the R1. I've had the R3. I have owned various brands of cameras over the past 35 years. but none had the super nice grip and operation menu structure of the Canon. R3. I'm certainly not a top photographer. but I do enjoy a camera where, in my opinion, everything is right.❤
Great video Harry !!! One of the things I love about my R3 over my R5 is the ability to use Crop mode in 4k 120P !! its like having a built in TC without losing F-stops or fumbling around with a TC during action !! I love that feature about the R3 !!! . Do you know if the R1 will be able to do that ? I have not been able to get an answer . I even called CPS and they had no clue lol 😂. If you know the answer i would really appreciate it !! I love that feature so much its holding me back from getting the R1 until I find out the answer. Thanks again love your work !!
Sam, I don't actually know that. That said, there is a high possibility I will have the R1 on the first shipment. I can check that for you once received.
@@HarryCollinsPhotographyI have the z8 and have shot Nikon my whole life but iso (noise) performance is driving me crazy. I am looking at switching to the r3 and canon and selling all my Nikon gear. I never thought I would but I am not even getting consistent focus either. Would love your input.

Hi Harry, I've followed your work for several years on Instagram and really admire it. I do a mix of mammals and birds and love my R5 but am seeing its low light limitations and AF issues as I grow as a photographer and push its limits. I want a pro weather sealed body with better low light performance at a bargain and the R3 appeals to me. I plan to keep my R5 but was debating between a R5 mark II and R3. Leaning towards R3 (since I could always upgrade my R5 to the R5 mark ii once prices drop), but was curious if you have any impressions on how the AF systems of the R5 ii and R3 compare for wildlife? Thanks and Regards, Shrav
What do you recommend to use as the CFexpress card. I recently purchased the r3 I’m waiting on it to come in, Im told to buy all these different brands but I just need one that can keep up with sports or nature
Everyone will tell you every brand out there has issues. I personally shoot with only Sandisk extreme pro. I have shot literally millions of photos over the years on them. Never a failure. amzn.to/4ij1Msy
You must be in posession of the rarest R3 in the world; one that doesn't overheat. Try shooting 6k RAW 60p with backup 10bit UHD 60 to SD card. Starts to overheat within 15mins at room temp. 120fps is down right unuseable. Other than that spot on review. R3 picture is amazing, and 100% agree on that silly sd card slot.
Interesting. I mean if you look at my channel everything on here in the last 2 years with the except of some RED footage is all R3. All 60 raw and 120fps. Honest to god never once over heated and I push it (that’s an understatement). Guess I’m lucky 🤷♂️
