I did ride the original submarine ride many times as a child. They used to have young women dressed as mermaids in the outdoor lagoon. It was a difficult job and sometimes the submarines created an undertow that posed a bit of a danger for these swimmers who were also hindered by the difficult to maneuver ‘mermaid’ costumes. I wish Disney World in Florida would revive the submarine ride using the ‘pod’ system which doesn’t involve water (just the illusion of being under water) and is very popular at Disney Sea in Tokyo.
I went to Disney World in early Nov 1974 after Navy boot camp, I really loved the 20000 leagues sub ride. It was nice, I wish they would have brought it back for the 50th.
Hi Shipmate, I had the same amazing experience with 20K at DW during boot at Orlando RTC in September of '74. Thanx for your service and carry on ... ^v^
I was lucky enough to ride the original ride in Disneyland. It was one of my favorite rides as a kid. The Nemo replacement is ok, but not as good as the original. The Tokyo disney sea version is amazing! We went in September and there was rarely a line, so we rode it multiple times. I think it is the best version now
My dad loved this Ride. He was sad when he first learned it was gone. This ride was really cool.
You gotta admit, that construction footage of Disneyland is amazing.
Outstanding video Matt! The production, research, editing...just amazing. I'll always miss the old submarine ride. Especially that goofy sea serpent at the end.
I've only been to the Nemo one.
"Do you think we should record this?"
"Who'd believe us?!"
I mentioned before that 20K Leagues & DL were both ambitious projects both of went grossly over budget. If either one had failed (It might have been the end of Walt Disney studios) Thankfully it did NOT. Fiberglas was used to construct much of the set pieces. A whole lot of it was used in Disneyland as well. These were new cutting edge materials. 20K was used as a "filler" in an other wise "attraction-less" area. Tomorrowland did not get worked on until 1/2 way through the year. Even the "weeds" received Latin names on them to "spruce up" he area. LOL Walt also considered "boarding up" the section until after the July opening. He decided NOT to disappoint the kids since he promised it for opening. The 20K exhibit opened after the parks opening, but remained popular until the New Tomorrowland no longer needed the exhibit. I believe a Nash Rambler engine (powered) the squid. It was also the squid which gave Walt the inspiration of using the technology used to make it work for the movie, to make the animals in the Jungle Cruise. I did ride it at DL & on the newer Nemo & friends. I still enjoy it very much. I never got to ride the one @ WDW. It would be 2001 when I finally made it there.
This was a great ride(though it needed better maintenance)and it gave such enormous atmosphere that was very Disney to Fantasyland. Look at those nautilus subs and how they glide through the water fall. The dopey cheap circus world is a huge failure of creativity and imagination but I guess that's the point. A better opportunity to sell merchandise.
And now people want the submarine voyage gone due to both being outdated by Tomorrowland standards and how the huge space it covers could be used for a new more futuristic Tomorrowland attraction.
That Kodel commercial was a treat! In liquid space!
Wow! I love the atmospheric quality of this episode. It really makes you think a little deeper about the WHY behind the decisions Disney made over the years. It's sad that the original version of the attraction is gone, as I like d the 20,000 Leagues theme better than the Nemo theme, but at the same time I'm glad it's not completely gone. Also, Tokyo has the most beautiful rides ever and I love getting glimpses of them! I only got to ride the original Submarines at Disneyland when I was very young, so I don't remember much of them. My family said that the ride kept my attention though!
I loved the movie 20,000 leauges under the sea it's one of my favorite Disney movies ever i would watch this movie almost every time I visited my grandparents house with my grandpa
He gave me his DVD of this movie and I have my own copy of the movie too and on vhs i even have the read a long record book
every time I watch this movie I think of my late Grandpa
when I heard about the ride I was so excited I dreamed about this ride alot I wanted to ride it so badly
I also dreamed about owning my very own Nautilus even a model kit of it or even a toy of it I still watch the movie to this day no matter what
Great job on this Video man I really appreciate it man u really mad my day
Another great vid! My experience was with the WDW version with the ships looking like the filming version of the Nautilus. I was so sad to see it go!
I am about to go to Disneyland for the first time since i was little. I'm excited to try out the Nemo ride but I did originally get to ride the 20,000 Leagues back on my first trip. It scared the carp out of me and help shape my fear of water based animatronics. But I've loved learning about it since then and wish I could go back and enjoy it as an adult. Oh well. Thanks so much for this awesome video! I love your content!!!
Really great video Matterhorn Matt. I dare to say your best yet.
I remember the 20,000 leagues under the sea ride. I went on it when I was about 10 years old (early 80`s) at Disney World. It was fun but damn, the underwater "creatures" were super cheesy, especially the sea monster.
Very well done, you even taught me new things.
Amazing video Matt !!! Keep up the great work
Really interesting and informative AND entertaining too!…. I learned so much more about this Disney ride in this amazing presentation than all the documentaries on Disney+ … thanks for sharing
God damn your editing is amazing. Good job Matt
Great piece but I have an addendum to your introduction: There obviously have not ALWAYS been amusement parks, etc. In most Western nations, leisure was generally only available for upper classes and royalty until about the mid-1800's. In fact, the concept of leisure only became possible for most people starting with the industrial revolution, and then only as a rare family activity, if even possible at all. It wasn't until the late 1800's that amusement parks became a reality. By the 1950's, the middle class was finally king & queen.
It was this cultural/class shift that symbolically empowered Main Street-to-Fantasyland Castle iconography central to Disneyland's vision. Walt created a space for regular people to feel like royalty. Now, unfortunately, Disneyland is so expensive that his vision isn't even viable for many middle class and poor families. Disneyland is just another playground for the well-off and self-indulgent, and they're crowding out the rest of us.
Richard Fleischer directed 20000 Leagues under the sea. Richard Fleischer is the son of cartoonist Max Fleischer. Max Fleischer is most famous for producing BETTY BOOP cartoons.

Honestly how do you not have more subscribers??
Great video! My mom went on this ride when she was really young :)
Again fantastic work Matt ☺
Cool, My family wanted to go on this ride in 1988 at DisneyWorld, it was under repair, glad you showed history of it and the ride, really cool :)
If they gave out emmy awards for youtube videos, then you'd win one for this one!
I would’ve like to see footage of them draining it and what was down there after all that time.
Hey good to see these videos back!! Can u please do some Walt Disney early Disneyland history
ENJOYED THE MOVIE and the submarines, in Disneyland, in about 1968.
My favorite ride I never rode, just slightly edging out Horizons! 20K is also my favorite Disney movie too.
Looking at the trailer for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea really makes me realize how different movie marketing has become! They didn’t try to give away the best parts or make the movie look stupid. Hell, they don’t say any jokes. Of course I don’t know if I can say movie trailers like this were better than now, but I’ll I can say is that it’s a stark contrast since a lot of trailers tend to be more fast paced in editing. It’s pretty clear to me the landscape of films has changed a lot.

When I watch one of your videos, it's like a master class. 👍
🎵we all live in a gray submarine🎵
Hidden Mickey @ 18:51
I have a suggestion for the Imagineers at Hong Kong Disney....Mao's Famine Simulator Land.
i am so glad i got to go on that ride. they wrecked it the following year. Splash Mountain was ok, i enjoyed Peter Pan.... but 20000 Leagues was my favorite out of all of the activities. I never knew it was shut down until after i had kids and was thinking about taking the trip with them..... boy was i disappointed, especially since my oldest was absolutely BONKERS about the movie. i was hoping to surprise him with the ride.
now that disney has turned against their own patrons no one is even interested in them anymore. i hope they clean up their act and get back to Walt's vision.
This was one of my favorites as a kid. I always swore we would go underwater and even if we didn't I lo.ved it
I’m going to DisneyLand on July 19th 2022
Good video
We missed out on an Atlantis TV show AND ride? 😭😭😭
This show is a lot like the movie "Jack and Jill" as both of them stop in the middle to play a commercial
oof
Walt Disney
I rode the finding nemo ride
Hi my name is bean and i am awesome no matter (no pun intended) what matt says
Umm....I really really dont mean to be THAT guy, but at 10:41 it says "Exploration through Luquid Space."
Oh look. A giant rubber band that’s supposed to be a squid
I'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but there is no such word as "nucular", Matt. We do have a similar word: "nuclear".
Gee thanks for using my deadname while sounding like a smartass 👍🏼

It takes 5 seconds to find the information 👍🏼
@@MountaineerProductions Fair enough.
VHS tapes! I only have a betamax player, will you have beta tapes instead? I prefer betamax with its higher quality over VHS.
Matt, didn't nearby Knott's Berry Farm do a theme park before Disneyland? Sure, Walt coined the term "theme park", but Knott's opened up before it, I'm sure. Disneyland is on a much more ambitious level, though.
But Knott's opened as an amusement park, there was no theme.
Knots Berry Farm? Ewww
Oh, up until the nineties Knott's was a really nice and well themed park.
Ghost Town started operating in 1920, so yes, it was themed. Also, the park has started to theme rides again, especially with Hangtime, and possibly a new large scale dark ride on the way. I love going to both Disneyland and Knott's, both are very nicely themed. All I can say is that Knott's is a very worthy counterpart to Disneyland, and gets too much negative press for their rides being too intense, which is really unneeded, as the park's thrill rides are still available to families.
Get out of here with that knots
♫Ko-del - it's itchy as hell♫
"nuke" ular? Nuclear, as in nucleus. It's pronounced (Noo-klee-yer)
While I think it’s fun submarines don’t really belong in Tomorrowland anymore.
I’m always wondering why you have a weird way of pausing and over pronouncing you conjunctions. You writing is getting better. You need to eliminate the ANDS, BUTS, ETC...you don’t need them.
