La La Land isn’t based on a Broadway musical. It was an original idea by Damian Chizelle (the writer/director). It was his love letter to the 40s and 50s golden age of musicals like Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris and the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musicals.
