I have a D810 which I did buy used. I got a great deal. I'll be using it for pet photography. I do love landscape and long exposure. Landscape for me is kind of therapeutic. It's nice to be able to get away from the hustle and bustle of life so to speak even if I don't get a great image. Before I invest in filters for the D810 I've been experimenting with long exposure using my D5600. I bought an inexpensive ND filter to go with it. I know it's crop sensor but I'm just trying this out for now. I have to say my first results have been better than what I expected. By the way, I took notes of your Light Room tutorial and used your method for adjustments on my images. Thank you very much!!!

Kudos for the tips! However, I think the gear you recommended might be a little too exclusiviste regarding the budget. Just regarding camera, APS-C give a better DOF, which is useful in this case. Also the lenses, Nikon 10-24 is crazy sharp and cheap. For HUGE prints, it might get a better quality overall the FX, but for the rest, the DX is cheap and light.

Remotes releases are nice but as an alternative, set your camera for a 2 or a 10 second shutter delay. This produces sharp images the same as a remote. Don't forget mirror lockup..

A few months ago I bought a Sony A7III, which I am totally in love with! With an adequate adapter I can use all my Nikkor lenses without problems. I also like to use old analog lenses (Helios, Pentacon, etc.) and Lensbabies. It all works perfectly on my new Sony!
I retired from professional flying, I invested in my hobby, bought a Canon 1DC, 3 years ago, bought 3 lenses all the pro range 8mm out to 210 and a x2 extender. . None are prime. I might fix that with a 20 mm very soon. The last piece of equipment I so far have avoided is a sturdy tripod. I can not make my mind up! Money is not an issue, but finding a sturdy tripod I can pack up and take away and carry is the big problem. I Bought a super motor cycle the fabulous 2018 Gold Wing lots of space for gear, this in the main to enjoy and combine with my hobby for pleasure. Can you suggest a Tripod ? I have to say I enjoy your style of photography. I never knew long exposure photography existed.!!! The effect is astonishing and very pleasing. I repeat I have a lot to learn and all the time in the world. Thank you for your video information.
Great video Attilio. All good advice - don't forget that, although it's not in the camera bag, Lightroom plays a huge role in determining the finished result. So that's item number 6.

Again in my opinion the lens hood is not necessary and not a top 5 item to have when starting long exposure. Also in my workflow, I don’t use the lens hood, which does not mean that nobody should use it...
Awesome info Atillio. I'm absorbing all I can before my big trip. One thing I might point out though is that I have found a heap of amazing Landscape photographers now using a cropped sensor. I myself picked the Sony A6500 specifically because of its smaller form and e-mount since I will be carrying it for a month on the John Muir Trail. Its been used for some amazing photos despite not being a full sensor camera. Not a huge concession but then again I'm not shooting photos for money but for love of the places I goto.

When your exposures are measured in minutes you do not need a remote shutter release. If you enjoy using one, then go ahead. However, think about it. When your mirror slap is affecting sharpness is in a fairly short time period of under one second, about 1/4 to 1/60. This means that the vibration period affects much less than 1/300 of a five minute exposure. No measurable difference.
A great common sense video. I tend to use a cropped sensor camera in preference over either of my full frame ones for two reasons. The first is I can use my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art ef-s which is the best wide angled zoom lens ever made, it makes my Canon 16-35 f2.8 II look rubbish. Also I can get away with using 85mm filters which saves a fortune. Brilliant as always Attilio, It’s compulsory to click on your video as soon as it’s uploaded.

I'd like to offer another choice for an nd filter. I bought a Formatt Hi-tech firecrest filter set. It's the newer holder not the one like Lee uses. It is color neutral. Lee, Cokin and others have a slight color cast but not the firecrest filters. Well, not the glass ones. I have the resin reverse grad and it warms the pictures up a little but it still doesn't have a color cast if that makes sense. It's not a magenta color. It's like it changes the temperature not the color. I took some really nice sunrise beach shots on vacation this past Christmas. I never used Lee and have nothing against their filters. They're quality filters. Formatt Hi-tech firecrest filters are a little cheaper and worth looking at.

Hi Attilio. I admire your videos, and find them very helpful. Too cold where I live. But I will try long exposures in spring! I use Canon 5D4 with 35mm L prime lens.
Attilio, thank you for talking about the equipment needed for long exposure photography. I have four out of the five - I just need the 10 stop ND filter. I have experimented with long exposure in blue hours with good results, but would like to go further with it. I have also tried multiple exposures, stacked and averaged them in Photoshop with occasional good results, but it is time consuming and you don’t know if it will work until post production. It can work with water, but it is hopeless for light trails. It’s a bit of a poor man’s compromise. I like to be able to see the effect on the back of the camera.
Nice assembly of long exposure items! One bonus tip might be though, especially on newer cameras, if you want to avoid a remote Shutter release, you can use a connected smartphone as yes. Yes, there is a downside regarding battery consumption, but still it is cheaper than a remote Shutter release. 😉

I have a Nikon d3300 and my widest lens its the 35mm f1.8, i think its good for learning, maybe time for save some money for the d610 and an old Nikon 20mm f2.8
I've just bought a D750 after using a D5300 for a couple of years. The only lens I have right now is the 50mm 1.8 for the D750 but trying to sell my DX lenses to get the 20mm 1.8 for long exposure and astrophotography.
Thank you for your tips. I`m right just here to decide a new camera. I´ll buy the Nikon Z6 I move on a full frame camera, but I`m not sure which is the right lens for landscape photography. So I`ll check it the 20mm lens. The tripod is really a difficult decision. If I hiking in the Alps the tripod is too heavy and the most time I leave at home. Great video Artillo! I was inspired by your long exposure photography. It's because of your works that I started taking long exposure photography. But on my first try, I saw some blue and red small color dots on my photo which I believe is a noise due to long shutter speed. It was taken using around 300 secs. I was wondering if you could share some tips on how to remove this in post process pls? And maybe some tips on how to avoid them pls. Thanks man!

A great vid in general & even better for the beginner. Anyone thinking of purchase a lens for their camera should check out DXO. They have a feature where you can pick our camera & lens combo rating different attributes of the combo. Also, a lot of cameras have built in timers & shutter delays in their menus. I shoot the D810 for the past 3 years. Most of my landscapes are with the Nikon 14-24 of which I just received the Wine Country Camera 150 Filter kit yesterday.

Most awaited video specially the ND filter suggestion which is the key point of long exposure. I have one question in mind. Even we take long exposure photos on high aperture does it make sense to have a very low aperture lense like f1.8 which you have?
I think the main point is that primes perform better than zooms. Not just in terms of sharpness, but also chromatic abberation and vignetting. If you stop this 20/1.8 down to about F/8, it performs better than any wide angle zoom on the market at F/8.

I use a remote shutter release when I have to capture something, like a wave rolling in on sand, where the exposure time is of medium duration (less than 20 seconds) and the timing of the release is critical. If you are taking a LONG exposure, let's say over 1 or 2 minutes, it would seem that any camera shake from pressing the release button would not show up. As you know, using a long exposure is a technique to make people in a public place, or moving cars in daylight, disappear. Why would a 1/2 to 1 second camera shake show up?
Attilio Ruffo If I use a 10 stop neutral density filter such that my exposure will be three minutes or 180 seconds, a one second movement of the camera would have an exposure of 1/180 of the rest of the image. I don’t think anybody would see that. Set the camera up for this type of shot but instead of shooting three minutes make it a one second exposure and see if you get an exposure that you can even see. My sense is that with a 1/180 of the proper exposure you would almost see nothing.
I currently use a D500, because I love shooting birds in flight. Want to try long exposure for landscape, wondering if I should look into a full frame?

Attilio, love your work and all your tutorials, i have an entry level nikon D5600 and want to do long exposure photography, i have ND filters, what i would like to know is how to pre focus your composition and lock the focus before applying your ND filter, i have a kit lens 18-55mm which does not have a manual lock on the lens please can you do a tutorial or help answer my query, thanks Attilio love your long exposure work its awesome.

Great great Videos from you ....learn a lot to get good results with low cost gear. I use an fuji x-t2 with an 14mm 2.8 lens means in fullframe 21mm and this works very good for me. Thxs an greetings from germany.

I have a Nikon d3300 and my widest lens its the 35mm f1.8, i think its good for learning, maybe time for save some money for the d610 and an old Nikon 20mm f2.8

I've just bought a D750 after using a D5300 for a couple of years. The only lens I have right now is the 50mm 1.8 for the D750 but trying to sell my DX lenses to get the 20mm 1.8 for long exposure and astrophotography.

Thank you for your tips. I`m right just here to decide a new camera. I´ll buy the Nikon Z6 I move on a full frame camera, but I`m not sure which is the right lens for landscape photography. So I`ll check it the 20mm lens. The tripod is really a difficult decision. If I hiking in the Alps the tripod is too heavy and the most time I leave at home. It`s really important to buy a light tripod. I looking forward to the next video.

Great video Artillo! I was inspired by your long exposure photography. It's because of your works that I started taking long exposure photography. But on my first try, I saw some blue and red small color dots on my photo which I believe is a noise due to long shutter speed. It was taken using around 300 secs.
I was wondering if you could share some tips on how to remove this in post process pls? And maybe some tips on how to avoid them pls. Thanks man!
Thanks Kevin! Those are called hot pixels, it can happen in very long exposure when the sensor get too hot, you can activate the long exposure noise reduction in your camera or remove the hot pixels in photoshop, in this video I show you how: ruclips.net/video/VjP_Wmq6LMI/видео.html

A great vid in general & even better for the beginner. Anyone thinking of purchase a lens for their camera should check out DXO. They have a feature where you can pick our camera & lens combo rating different attributes of the combo. Also, a lot of cameras have built in timers & shutter delays in their menus. I shoot the D810 for the past 3 years. Most of my landscapes are with the Nikon 14-24 of which I just received the Wine Country Camera 150 Filter kit yesterday.

Most awaited video specially the ND filter suggestion which is the key point of long exposure.
I have one question in mind. Even we take long exposure photos on high aperture does it make sense to have a very low aperture lense like f1.8 which you have?
It’s a fair point, what I like about that specific lens, is how sharp it is and the versatility...
I think the main point is that primes perform better than zooms. Not just in terms of sharpness, but also chromatic abberation and vignetting. If you stop this 20/1.8 down to about F/8, it performs better than any wide angle zoom on the market at F/8.

I use a remote shutter release when I have to capture something, like a wave rolling in on sand, where the exposure time is of medium duration (less than 20 seconds) and the timing of the release is critical. If you are taking a LONG exposure, let's say over 1 or 2 minutes, it would seem that any camera shake from pressing the release button would not show up. As you know, using a long exposure is a technique to make people in a public place, or moving cars in daylight, disappear. Why would a 1/2 to 1 second camera shake show up?
If the camera moves, the image will be blurry at any shutter speed...
Attilio Ruffo If I use a 10 stop neutral density filter such that my exposure will be three minutes or 180 seconds, a one second movement of the camera would have an exposure of 1/180 of the rest of the image. I don’t think anybody would see that. Set the camera up for this type of shot but instead of shooting three minutes make it a one second exposure and see if you get an exposure that you can even see. My sense is that with a 1/180 of the proper exposure you would almost see nothing.
I currently use a D500, because I love shooting birds in flight. Want to try long exposure for landscape, wondering if I should look into a full frame?
