I understand that good swimmers don't want to wear life jackets when rock fishing, but if you get a head knock on the rocks as you are swept into the ocean by a big wave, the life jacket can still help to save your life. Unconscious and floating is better than unconscious and underwater. It also gives others the chance to rescue you.

I was there that day fishing further away, with full disagreement to this video and lifejackets. I’ve fished for 12 years off the rocks never been washed in, never worn a life jacket because I fish in safe conditions.
This man was uneducated and the swell was 0.9-1M southerly that day, tiny swell.
This bloke did not have rock shoes and slipped in, I asked him where is his rock shoes beforehand. After he came back to shore with scratches all on his arms, I once again told him to never fish the stones without rock shoes.
Education, knowledge common sense means more then finding justification in wearing lifejackets.

Having a safe exit place for if you do go in should be just stand process for an experienced rock fisherman. And that in most cases should be a sandy beach in easy swimming distance. Assume trying to get back up the rocks where you went in is going to result in you getting smashed to pieces. It also means always dress so you can swim. You are only going down in gumboots, overalls, etc.

best is a pair you make from shoes that are easily removable with your other foot if you are in the water as it is easier to swim without them preferably stop at the ankle unlike boots then you want to ad a bit of metal about 1 cm in height and as wide as your shoe at the bottom screwed from the top or apply some loctite so the metal doesnt just slip off the soul of the rubber, half squared wall cladding or an off cut of metal from a job site haha is easy to use and wallah you should be sturdy enough to not get knocked down from ankle deep waves or backwash.. anything over your shins is probably just asking to get swept in

Seeing guys fish in bare feet or thongs with no idea about sea conditions.
Even the guy posting this calling "rogue waves" when there's no such thing if you know the water and wave patterns.
Bobby corkers setting their rods in holders while their float drifts 30m sideways and making it unfishable for everyone else while they are at the base of the cliff having a feed.
Gone are the days where guys could be lined up fishing together with no issues.
Guys that got up early to catch live bait and send them out would be respected by the spin men.
Hook a good fish and three blokes would offer to help gaff the fish for you.

I’ve been surfing and fishing for 60 years so I understand and respect the power of the ocean so it annoys me when people refer to ‘rogue’ waves or ‘freak’ waves. It gives people a false sense of security because it sounds like these waves are rare and therefore it’s unlikely to get them. You can clearly see the rock shelf is wet meaning waves have been breaking over it. This should spell danger to anyone who is not an experienced rock fisherman. If the rocks are wet, go home. There are ALWAYS waves that are a little bigger than the rest. They are not rogue or freak waves.

Best thing to do if you fall in is swim out to open water away from the rocks. You have a lifejacket so you’ll be safe in open water. Hopefully someone else can Call 000 or lifeguards and await rescue. Otherwise swim towards the beach. You DO NOT want to swim with a life jacket near the surging rocks as you can get swept under a rock ledge and stuck.

The solution isn’t to just pretend like they don’t exist and to just rely on your own "understanding" of wind and tide changes. The solution is to just ALWAYS anticipate them, because they will happen, and no amount of "understanding" wind and tide changes will help you predict them or give you sufficient, or even any warning before they do!

@@buddajoseph Yeah, we surfers do it all the time. In huge waves. This is barely 2ft. We do ledge climbs in 15ft chaos.
You dont get it because you dont understand the ocean. Its EASY. Real easy. Just climb up as the swell rises. These guys have NO business being near the ocean. Neither do you. Stay away from ledges and waves.

The nsw government should place rock platform safety eyes for fisherman to tie off to, you see, it’s not the wave coming in, it’s the washout that wipes clean, if your tethered, your still there above sea level once it recedes, no need for life jackets, just a waist strap and rope, including the carry equipment, too easy, place a eyelet every hot spot, cheap life insurance, this even Asian enthusiast would use without hesitation.

Unfortunately what probably will happen is a blanket ban on rock fishing , or closure of certain areas. Every year the numbers increase but never a mention of the stupidity of the people getting in trouble

    • @mackash

No. Just fish in a pond or learn how to swim in the ocean.

How did no just walk down the the lifeguard station at the entry to the rocks and get some help.
Would have been sorted out safely in less than 5 minutes.
Pulling him up the rocks is the worst thing you can do.
Rouge waves don’t exist, only silly people who don’t know how to read the conditions.
I’ve never had a close call in 30years of rock fishing. Including a lot at Avoca
