You’re exactly right! Looking back through the videos after filming them, the waves seem to have shrunk, gotten smaller than in real life. Thanks for being realistic and polite 😊
Great video, as a Western Suburbs boy I still have very fond memories of a similar crossing in the late 80's, just before they shut ferries off for the day and replaced them with Buses. I love the ferry trip from Manly to CQ and when it's rough like that you just have to be there to experience it! Nice video, brings back memories. The sight that most sticks in my mind was as the two ferries crossed path near the turning point in heavy weather, seeing the other ferry nearby helped give context to the swell height. I always remember at one stage the other ferry was at the top of the swell and next the swell was almost higher than it, when it was in the trough. They're amazing ferries.
Even when I was on the South Steyne in the 1960s, it had to undertake a triangular route to cross The Heads in winter - coming or going. The "swells" coming through the Heads would have tipped it over, had it proceeded in a straight line. First it headed out towards open water, about 45 degrees. Then - about half way across, but still just inside the Heads - it would manage to turn at an angle, then proceed at another 45 degrees (to either Sydney or Manly). Effectively surfing on those "swells" - to feel the back go up at about 25-30 degrees was quite something.
At the crossing of the heads there is a big basin of water where the harbour water meets the ocean. That’s why it is usually rough there in big swells. The harbour is flowing out and the ocean is flowing in. The basement dwellers obviously don’t know that.
I remember about 15 years ago when the swell was huge and I heard the ferrys were still running we went for a spin, the crew had shut all the main deck door but one closest to the bow wasnt locked so i opened it and went out and just as I had got up the stairs to the bow I looked behind me and a couple from spain on tour in Australia had followed me and were at the bottom of the stairs, before I could tell them to go back we hit a wave the size of a unit block and the water was well above our heads, I got washed down the stairs but managed to hold onto a gap in the scuppers the couple got washed along the deck for over 10 meters and the woman broke he wrist, the inside of the ferry was a wash with 3 feet of water sloshing from side to side wetting everyone, i wasnt very popular at all after that, will never forget it though, great vid mate
Commuted on the Manly Ferries, Hydrofoils and jet cats over 30 years. The original wooden Ferries used to just cross and and knowing commuters never put their bags down because a foot of water would breach and race under our feet. And in those days you could make the leap as it berthed. Their iron replacements always went out and came back in at an angle which could be spectacular surfing in 5 meteres swell ... Doddle. Over the years weather cancellations increased as did their mechanical problems. But nothing came close to downstairs at the back of a Hydrofoil in a big swell experiencing 2 to 3 meter drops as it ran across the top of the swells and surfed down the toughs. Best commute EVER! The worst commute ever and lucky I wasn't on it. I saw a bombora forming from my house and sand had piled up. The state minister had ordered the use of river cats on the Manly run and one got pinned on the bombora and over 20 people were injured. They were never used again on the Manly run.
Omg, those waves are massive and the swell, I would have been a mess. Kudos to you for the amazing video, only had one trip to Manly and it was not great so took the fast ferry back to Sydney. Im not a ferry lover but I enjoy these videos.

So I work out at sea for a living and I can tell you some of those swells in this vid are 100% 5m +!! the camera never does it any justice as to how big they are. Hope you had fun! Yeehaa
Thankyou for the video, I enjoyed it immensely and just wish I had been there. I went on a similar ferry ride years ago, it was exhilarating! I love Sydney, and the ferries, they’re awesome!
Loved this. Always remembered the big swells crossing the heads. In the old ferries there was a lot of roll too. Sometimes you thought the ferry would keep rolling. This was great fun to watch, thanks.
Saw a wave go through the front door on the upper deck 1 day. Dumped on all the people in the first 20 to 30 rows got very wet. The door was opened when people tried to escape the waves coming over the top deck. I think the crew should be more proactive in warning people about getting wet. Also big waves are immensely powerful. People underestimate the power of these waves .
When I was a young shipwright working in the harbour, we would go out to the heads in swell just to give our work its rightful testing. The good old Manly ferries are big solid steel boats, designed and built for the job. Nice footage . thanks mate.
The people who drive the ferries are brilliant. I’ve crossed from Circular Quay to Manly countless times... It’s fairly common for it to get rough at times. ❤
This was one hell of a day and I’m so glad neither Trai nor I were seriously injured. I hope he’s okay and recovering well. We must appreciate the crew who kept us all in very safe hands throughout the day. Great video mate, one of the best days of my life!
Seen this on the manly ferry ,travelling to circular quay across the heads being brave then we stood(son) on the very front as the vessel went up we could the bottom when it went down we got drenched. Arriving at the quay all ferry services were cancelled.
THANKS FOR POSTING, IGNORE THE PUT DOWNS. In the 60s and 70s our family did a lot of crossings in the old Dee Why class ferries. This brings back so many wonderful memories. In the old ferries you could duck behind the forward coamings and with some quick reflexes stay completely dry. Next time there are big seas I must do this again. Keep up the good work.
Awesome video, this is the highlight of a Sydney visit if you get the chance go do it....just remember wear your wet weather gear & put dry clothes, shoes & towel in dry sack in your backpack ... and put those phone in dry neck strap bags unless your rich & can buy another... enjoy
I remember doing something like this more than 40 years ago. We were joined by a channel 7 news crew. Unfortunately after the trip into the city they closed the ferries down and we had to make alternative plans to get back

I used to have workmates who travelled to and from home to work and back on the ferry. They used to have a beer on the way home and would call the trip a 3 can trip, or a 4 can trip depending on how long it took for the ferry to battle to Manly. 😂😂
One drop of rain and Sydney Trains go into chaos.. They could learn a thing or two from these amazing ferries. I love them. Totally 'Built for Purpose'.
It's quite fun with how quickly the Emerald class pitches up and down, but you can't get drenched the same way that you can on a Freshwater class. Nothing beats a ride on the Freshwater class during a big swell! Thanks for watching Carol, glad you enjoyed it!
Surprised they allowed you outside. I notice the front deck is out of bounds. Whenever the ferries start heading waaaay out towards the heads you know its gonna be fun.
@@josephinebennington7247 - Yeah, this is the warmest time of the year for us locals and the water is usually around the 23°C mark. So yeah, quite nice! 👍
I once sat on the outside deck at the side, feeling sorry for myself realising I had the beginnings of the flu. Whilst having a bit of a daydream the ferry went down into a trough and all of the water compressed through one of those gaps that lets water run off the deck and completely soaked me. I mean completely soaked me. 😅
The other trick that you missed. Is jumping into the wash as the ferry took off, or even better as it reversed when it rocked up to the waff, so ya got sucked in towards the prop!!.... heaps fun ey.
We used to like watching the tourists push and shove to get what they thought were the prime spots up the front of the Manly ferry, sit well back and quietly smile, then wait till it went through the heads on a rough day. Don’t waste your money at Luna Park when you can have this. On days like that you sit inside.
That’s nothing. I recall as a kid in the 70s during the east coast lows the roof level of the old ferry was below the wave tops when the ferry was at the bottom of the troughs.
