    This show had so many utterly fantastic side characters that deserved more time on screen.

    I adore how confident Joey is in her own ability. Pair that with Deaf people's cultural tendency to be blunt/straightforward, and you get an absolute powerhouse who knows she's the shit, isn't afraid to say so, and has the numbers to back it up. Joey Lucas for President.

      I remember seeing an interview with Marlee Matlin where the reporter basically asked her what it was like to be her day-to-day in Hollywood. Her response was something along the lines of "I'm good looking, good at my job, and when I walk in a room and start talking everyone listens. It's pretty good"
      😂😂😂

    Pfft, I'm sorry, I'm coming here 8 years after you recorded this to put on the internet, because I have to point out a relic of it's time. You're a teacher, aren't you? Because I can see the SMART Ink overlay they used on SMART boards back when I was in high school; the boards that came with an attached projector, and a set of color-coded stylus markers that let you draw over the current image on the screen to highlight things and circle things and do math problems written out. Man it's been forever since I saw that logo and it just, completely opened up nostalgia in my mind, thank you for that.

      @@Snowy123Kinda, yeah. Effectively you're meant to treat them as if they aren't there and you're only communicating with who they're interpreting.

    Curious if IRL a person who is deaf in politics would pick a translator of same gender or different. I am sad that I thought hmm maybe she picked a male voice to give her voice more weight.
    I miss west wing. It made / makes me think.

      Good question, although I think at least the character Joey Lucas had no problem being assertive when she wanted to be heard all by herself.

      It’s possible, but it may have been more pragmatic - they needed an actor who knew American Sign Language

    • @davidweihe6052
      @davidweihe6052 3 года назад +3

      @@brontewcat Why? You think that it is written in the script in ASL? They needed an actor with decent timing, who could emote a bit when Joey would be emoting a lot. Possibly Kenny's actor really does know ASL, but it isn't particularly necessary.

      She used the same kind of guy in Reasonable Doubts where she played Tess Harper opposite Mark Harmon. I'm not sure if it's a conscious decision to use a guy as her voice. Maybe he's the best she could find for the job regardless of gender or other attributes that have little or nothing to do with conveying her message to the world around her. Shame we can't see the body of her work with a female interpreter to see if there's any significant difference.

      @David People who use ASL watch television and would be all over it if a phony were used… somebody pretending to interpret. Would a program use an actor interpreting Russian who doesn’t speak it and speaks gibberish?
