I want them to follow up on Cannonball (And maybe get the New Mutants together at some point. Maybe the season finale). I believe his episode was the last one of the 90s series and having Sunspot and him interact would be nice. Also Illyana Rasputin. More people need to know about the coolest X-Man.
I hope they follow up on the fact Cable is a father, especially since it shouldn't be much longer until Cable reappears and Scott/Cyclops coming to terms with the fact he's a grandfather sounds fascinating.
What doesn't make sense is that even in the original series his powers weren't limited to affecting métal, so i don't even know what they are using that is immune to his powers.
Wait. Magneto hooked up with Wasp during Secret Wars? Didn't Deadpool's Secret Wars retcon also have him hooking up (and getting somewhat serious) with Wasp during Secret Wars? Were either of them aware?
Because of the Juggernaut's helmet, I'd just always assumed that's why any villain in this continuity wore metal helmets; even back in the 90s and onward.
To be fair to the X-Men when Magneto calls them out for not helping the Morlocks, at the end of their first episode in the original show, after Storm becomes their leader, she asks them to move into the mansion but they decline and decide to stay in the sewers.
Also it’s not like the X-men have there own independent nation that they could have shipped them to like magneto and Genosha. At least in this universes.
Magneto's speeches. Both of them, he completely just captivates, scenes like this really hammer home why he's one of the Mutant cause's "Thought Leaders" It's not just him being a powerful mutant, but there's an actual cause and oratory skills to spin that cause, which is good.
Episode 2 was DOPE. I don't understand how any fan of the X-Men wouldn't like the themes and messages conveyed in this episode. It's what the X-Men are all about.
Maybe they are just having trouble confronting their feelings towards Fabio coded Magneto? But seriously never underestimate how some people will miss any themes or messaging in stories
I do find it funny Xavier's Holocaust blast scene from the 92 series happens when Magneto is wearing his helmet so it definitely didn't block him back then
I mean you could make the argument that in that example Charles overpowered whatever defense the helmet had. But yeah, the continuity of that thing has always been a bit of a mess.
Logan's look of fear when he hears the baby is coming is priceless. Man can face down nearly anything and this leaves him shaken. And I took it as the keys were just planted there via the TK and he grabbed it half reflexively.
Ooo, more Magneto x Rogue breakdown. Honestly, I'd love a deep dive into Magnito's various romantic attachments - I didn't even know about the Storm one.
Magneto's speech alone makes the episode worth it for me. But also I didn't expect Storm getting shot to affect me so much. I think this episode is when I got that the show really is aimed at us millenials who grew up with the 90s cartoon, and not trying to get kids' attention.
Episode two didn't shock me in the way that was intended. I've followed X-Men on and off for forty years. This story is old hat. Mutants as the stand in for ethnic minorites. However, when I was growing up, and for years later, I just enjoyed it as a reminder of what COULD happen in a society. That my own country had largely moved beyond it. Did it still exist here? Sure. But in the shadows because that point of view, that a person wasn't entitled to basic human rights because of their race, their ethnicity, was considered fundamentally wrong by the general populace. But.... I watch this episode, and am filled with unease. Hatred is everywhere in my country in today's age. You see people claiming we should be a dictatorship. People marching in protests saying things like "jews will not replace us". Saying things like "I'm not racist, I just think that certain types of people shouldnt have the same rights I do." The reason for threats in this episode against the judges? Right out of current headlines. I feel uneasy because we are living X-Men. And I don't think most people even realize it.

Instead se absorb his nobility & kindness, feeling she has never experience before & she found that she like these feeling ,like being a good person _ The gun that take away Storm power was reverse engineered from Rom's neutraliser which can neutralise any form of energy, it was designed to fight dark magic of the Dire Wraith. The original has many function that the replica doesn't(sending people to Limbo, can finely tune its power to target a specific energy like a curse & leave the person unharmed)
We're so used to seeing Rogue on the X-men team! I want a series where she's a true antagonistic member of the Brotherhood for at least a whole season and a half before switching sides! I want to feel the same fear of her that I felt for Princess Azula! Because Rogue was a WHOLE MENACE in Avengers Annual #20!
One of the things I liked about the way they laid out the bigotry issues is that they are ultimately irrational. And that's how bigotry should be displayed because it is. You shouldn't have them be technically correct but just being mean about it. But Magneto's last speech, as he's holding the UN Council and the X-cutioner up in the stratosphere, is a thing of beauty. Erik barely holding onto his promise to Charles behind his incandescent rage. His statement about how he does not CARE if they love or like him and his kind, they are going to have to simply accept that they exist and that's that. Particularly poignant with a lot of the discourse today. But also still ends on the cheeky last line of "Do not make me let you down" while he has them suspended a couple miles in the air. Wouldn't be Magneto if he didn't let you know he COULD kill you if he wanted to.

Ah, the age thing....Yeah Rogue and Gambit were through a lot of their publication College age. I think rogue spent the 1990's 19, (I thought she was early 20's) It is a comics thing. Jubilee has been 17 post Generation X so for the past 21 years. Franklin Richards....dear god that boy.

I loved how the series adapted the Trial of Magneto. It was such a good comics' story, I knew it would work here. What I like about the animated series is how it always adapts the stories from the comics, how it doesn't go beat-for-beat, but makes it work within the show's parameters. This is no exception. Getting to see more of Magneto's empathy, and seeing him work to keep from defaulting to his usual ways was satisfying on an emotional level as well as a storytelling one. Though the moment Jean named the baby, my brain started thinking ahead to what they were going to do in episode 3. I love this new feeling for the series; when I watched as a kid, I hadn't read any of the comics - those came later for me, in late high school. Now, having read decades of X-Men, the clues in the animated series are visible to me, and they make me excited for what's to come, and how the story I know will be adapted to fit this medium.
I like the idea of Magneto x Rogue as a pitstop to the destination that is Rogue & Gambit. It’s like adding a little spice (Magneto x Rogue) to an already iconic dish (Rogue & Gambit).
Yes please breakdown the Rogue X Magneto relationship. My true OTP will always be Rogue and Gambit of course. While I was shocked at the direction things were going given how the previous series went I'm excited to see how mature this series can go. Also jealous Gambit is doing things to my heart 😊
It's always funny to be reminded that David Hayter is a screen writer first and voice actor second, Solid Snake writes screenplays Inbetween sneaking missions
Overall I feel this was a much stronger episode than episode 1, not that that one was bad or anything. Now one thing I don't see many people talking about is how this episode confirmed more mutant classifications, we have Alpha mutants like Magneto and Beta mutants like Gambit.
I haven't seen the show only know of it from commentaries. I think what is happening so far could be stretched out for the season, and maybe play around with the timing. Like have the birth of Nathan and depowered Storm happen as end of season cliffhangers, then maybe do the Goblin Queen/ Inferno story as a 5 parter similar to the Dark Phoenix saga.
I loved episode 2 of X-Men ‘97❤ Storm & Magneto were the MVPs-their designs & powers were great here🤩 Watching it made me wish I had more irl comic book friends to geek out over cuz there were certain moments that happened that I got so excited/shocked about & it would just be so much fun to watch this with friends who know comics. One of the moments I was surprised by was the Rogue & Magneto thing-I did not see that coming🤯 I don’t ship them, but I also don’t hate it. It’s interesting, though I still think Gambit & Rogue are meant to be, I don’t mind the extra drama her with Magneto causes.
I'm actually expecting a retcon, where they say that Magneto was working with Mystique when she led the Brotherhood (or he was a the shadow-leader or something), and that's when Rogue developed a crush on him or something. Though I don't recall how old she was supposed to have been then (she never looked that different in the flashbacks), so maybe they'll say they had some kind of rendezvous between the end of the first series and the beginning of this revival. I never really "got" their relationship in the 616 Universe, as I didn't collect comics when the Savage Land incident occurred. Weirdly enough, while I liked Rogue and Gambit's dynamic in the cartoon, I didn't really care for them as a couple as the the comics went on. But I especially didn't like that, after she got control of her powers, and after Erik tells her about the time he want a-Nazi-huntin', they ended up sleeping together. While she was kinda taking things slow with Remy. Definite low point in Jason Aaron's run, if you ask me.
Am I the only one who thinks it be crazy awesome if the show adapts X-men vs Avengers (the 80’s one) and brings back the Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes actors to reprise their roles as…well, The Avengers?
When I was reading X-Men in the 1980s I assumed Magneto had some low-level psychic powers / psychic defenses which the helmet enhanced. This mostly came from the psychic powers being mentioned in the Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe and the mention of the circuitry in the helmet you mentioned in the video. So I didn't see it as an absolute defense against psychic powers, but I did think it helped increase his natural defenses. I agree that the movies were the first reference to the helmet "protecting him from all psychic attacks" but I had always assumed Singer was using the fact that the helmet had "psychic enhancing circuitry" in the comics as a inspiration for the psychic shielding in the movies. It is kind of funny that he just invented it from whole cloth in an attempt to close a plot hole.
One of these days I'd like to see an X-men property use the lyrics or heck even the song from David Bowie's "Oh you pretty things". Listening to the lyrics feels like it could fit in a mutant story. It's totally stupid but i had it in my head for a few days now.
Thank you so much for the breakdown. This is such an interesting episode. I’ll admit that I am not team Magneto Rouge, but that is probably due to the fact that my first exposure to these characters was in that first Bryan Singer 90s film and in that story there was a significant age gap between the Ian McKellen Magneto and the teenage Rouge (and of course he terrorizes her in that movie and the other x-men have to save her). I know that that was a different story line and these Magneto and Rouge can be different. I think the storytelling on this new series is very good and could get me to see this new (to me) storyline as something worth accepting.
I really liked this episode, it's like show came out strong with the first episode but REALLY stepped things up in two with escalating events and everything with Magneto, I was here for it. I did wonder how far above the atmosphere he was gonna take those people.
First time i associated magneto’s helmet with blocking telepaths started when i watched x men evolution. Not because it was explicitly done for him…but because it was explicitly done for juggernaut. They had to take his helmet off for xavier to knock him out, so, from then on, i assumed helmets blocked telepathy.
Great recap. Whilst I don't think its as bad as the Harry Potter "Wizard's don't use bathrooms" retcon, type of thing, was never a fan of Magneto "needing" his helmet to deter or block telepathy. Its the kind of simple answer to a simple question/problem, that sounds good on the surface, but the longer more nuanced explanation is more interesting. Like Magneto having a natural resistance, as quite a few mutants do tied into their powers (Storm and Gambit come to mind), additionally... Xavier and Magneto were best buds, Magneto whilst not a telepath himself, probably learned a few tricks and ideas, and his natural resistance was probably boosted as well. Especially if he knew, as far as ideals, they might row apart. Then that also makes sense why later he would try to use technology to give himself telepathic mind control powers, because he knows hoe potent and susceptible others can be. You can ask all sorts of "why doesn't XYX character just do this?" and sometimes the answer isn't just "they wear ABC clothing item", or it is, but it might not be interesting. I mean sometimes it can be interesting but yeah. Doesn't really bother too much though, but creatively speaking, I liked older explanations.
Maybe they can go back and restore the episodes from the original series that Disney plus censored so that we wouldn't see Morph get shot and Beast get flung into an electric fence.
The Rogue/Mags pairing made sense in AoA because instead of Rogue having Ms Marvel's powers she had Polaris's powers so their magnetic powers were polar opposites but I feel like past AoA Chronicles everyone forgot this and just made her hella strong and invulnerable per yewszh lol
Not going to lie this episode has one of the most unintentionally terrifying weapons I’ve seen cause a gun that shoots enough ionized radiation to disrupt the genes of all your cells would leave WAY more damage than just knocking out someone’s powers. Like we are getting to Demon Core’s 3D internal burns levels of radiation here.
@@Dreadwing1000 I know but still, for it to have a long term to permanent impact at the very least it would require treatment and maybe hospitalization. A simple line of “We managed to prevent further physical damage but don’t know if we can undo the damage she already went through.” would have been enough to not kill her off while showing off the seriousness of the situation. (Not to mention that even with the collars considering the bad luck mutants have in universe chances are they are also harmful, just no where near as much an atomic blast to the face).
@@Dreadwing1000It’s actually X Men 67’, where we live by the classic sci fi tradition of radiation doing whatever the plot needs it to do. Turn corpses into ghouls, grow ants the size of trucks, etc.
My favorite thing about this and the original series is that we get a different spin on classic stories. So far I think it's great. Also semi-unrelated. Singer is the worst.
X-Cutioner's Song!... But sadly, I doubt it would ever happen, since it involves all of the X-teams (X-Force, X-Factor, etc.), as well as Cable, Stryfe and the MLF, and Apocalypse, and it would take at least two seasons to set up all those characters and teams so that the audience would care about them or at least be interested in them, especially when it comes to Stryfe's story and the ex-New Mutants kids (now X-Force) being hunted byall the other X-Teams. Other than that, it would be nice to maybe get an abridged version of the Siege Perilous story, where the X-Men basically become invisible to all technological viewing/tracking equipment, so nobody knows who they are or what they look like anymore, and they set up a base in Australia and try living "normal" lives for a while... well, if "normal" involves routinely taking on cybernetic mercenaries (the Reavers), taking on Sentinels from the future, and using bar brawls to fight off a massive alien invasion consisting of about 75% of all the alien species in the universe, and doing that in just a few hours. Oh, yeah, and it wasn't even the full team that repelled the invasion, just Collossus, Wolvie, Havok, and Longshot. (and even the full team at that time was down to only about eight or nine members). And at some oint during all that, Storm gets turned into a child, as well... The Australia X-Men were insane times, and insanely fun to read!
With how they used X-Cutioner in this episode, I think we may see Friends of Humanity members equipped with Phalanx tech from Cameron Hodge (or maybe Bastion which he got from Hodge) in place of the Dire Wraith...unless they just drop the Brood in there. But I get the feeling this is headed towards some kind of take on X-Tinction Agenda, Phalanx Covenant, and maybe Operation: Zero Tolerance since Friends of Humanity with Phalanx tech could basically just be Prime Sentinels. In the comics the Phalanx Covenant stuff starts right after the X-Cutioner stuff. They could be combining depowered Storm with deaged Storm events...deaged Storm goes into X-Tinction Agenda. And Operation: Zero Tolerance was a crossover event that happened in ‘97.
What storyline are you hoping to see on this show?
The one with Cyborg Johnny and- oh wait, that's Ghost Rider

It's always funny to be reminded that David Hayter is a screen writer first and voice actor second, Solid Snake writes screenplays Inbetween sneaking missions
Eric has a bit of a cross dressing vibe with his ensemble, opera gloves and "cat" suit. Kind of Tim Curry Rocky Horror Picture Show.
He's going through a phase. We've decided to be supportive.
I can dig the references, and story beats.
The crest of Birdman!
Crrrrrest on Birdman's helmet!
🎶Hey Mr. Passerby! Crest on Birdman's helmet!🎶
Loved your make-up. Awesome content as always.
In DCU anti-Telepathic helmets were made of a metal called Lurium in ADVENTURE COMICS #303...
Thank you for the helmet breakdown
18:44 This scene was great! 😭😂
Can't wait for your opinion about the 5th episode
The return of Dark Sasha!
I would love to get a full episode on Rogue and Magneto!
Episode 2 was G-O-A-T. A masterclass of adaptation ❤❤❤
Thanks for this astonishing breakdown....❤❤❤❤❤
One of these days I'd like to see an X-men property use the lyrics or heck even the song from David Bowie's "Oh you pretty things". Listening to the lyrics feels like it could fit in a mutant story. It's totally stupid but i had it in my head for a few days now.
I tend to think of early Kitty when I hear Irene Cara's What a Feeling. That lady from Flashdance looks a bit like an older version of her too.
They do in the TV show Legion
Lol, I'm not team Magneto and Rogue either, but it can be interesting. I'm excited to see which stories they pull from.
I really liked this episode, it's like show came out strong with the first episode but REALLY stepped things up in two with escalating events and everything with Magneto, I was here for it. I did wonder how far above the atmosphere he was gonna take those people.
Anyone who finds X-Men to be preachy... doesn't understand X-Men.
After reading the Beauty and the Beast limited series, with Dazzler in it, I would love to see Beast get flung into an electric fence.
I miss cassettes Very satisfying to click them in
This breakdown is great! 🙏🏽💪
10:27 My man Doctor Doom! 🙏🏽💪
I'm excited for episode 4
X-Men 97 has been fire for all three episodes, I really cant go back to the Fox's X-Men movies now that this show is released
Unrelated but im just gonna say I think that lady from the government with the glasses is Mystique. Calling it now lol
It’s a specific type of radiation that the collars also use (though they use a smaller dose) sometimes you just have to accept comic book logic
@@arlibrarian I mean yeah, but it’s accurate, radiation still does shit like that in comic books, it never really left
Both me and my daughter like the Magneto and rogue thing for Rogues sake.
I believe that Magneto’s helmet properties comes from Juggernaut’s helmet.
Love the black lipstick
