Romy fan here I’m just devastated lmao. Why they gotta kill Gambit like that… but at the same time they gave him like the best moments this episode. It was so good that I got something not named Dark Phoenix and actual storylines for a wider audience to experience. Happy Nation playing in the background of that dance scene was immediately red flags going off, like something is going to go down (especially when you go back and hear it in Madelyne's vision)! This was the best Rogue/Gambit episode in terms of exploring their relationship. Rogue brought me to tears when she says "I cant touch you, Remy!" This woman for much of her young adult/adult life has never been able to physically touch anyone; it must be maddening at times because she loves Gambit and wants that physical connection that we all do. So when she and Magneto figure out their powers cancel each other out leaving Rogue to touch him, i can understand that draw, that want. But in the end, she realizes what they have goes deeper than skin. And the ending... im still not ok with that WandaVision level gut punch. 10/10
Can we get a little bit of love for that lampshading of all the Original Series Lore Dumps? "I was possessed by an interstellar being." "Yeah, Phoenix." "Oh, right, you were there." 😂
That ending man. With Rogue and Gambit. Just wow, I loved it. I was watching it with a friend and we were losing our minds all the way. Magneto and Rogue's dance scene was so dapper. Just 2 people flying in the air dancing. I was shocked by the blood but I don't mean that in a bad way. Really enjoyed seeing how hard they pushed this episode. My emotions were everywhere.
Wow, to think all those times Rogue and Magneto fought in the old series, secretly they were remembering their old romantic interludes together... Must have been so hard to pretend it never happened all those times...
I was not ready for Gambit's death, my whole issue I've had with the season so far has been Rogue cheating on Gambit with Magneto because Gambit is my favourite of the group. And just wow I was not ready for his death
What I find most astounding is this animated kiddie show has already, thematically and theatrically, proven to be one of the most enjoyably consistent offerings of all of the Disney + / Marvel series produced IMHO.

I'm a huge Invincible fan, but no, Ep5 topped anything that series has done so far. It's a damn cartoon, about a 1/2hr, and it is one of the most intense pieces of television I've ever seen. It's a fantastic blend of the old cartoons and the comics lore, and right up there with the final episode of MASH, the season 1 finale of Due South, and the season 5 finale of Supernatural. It's on par with shows like Orphan Black, and made more impact than most movies I've seen in years. Take Magneto: you see him be a hero, trying to save lives. Then the horror he's facing kicks him in the PTSD, and he starts lashing out like the old, vilainous Master of Magnetism. And his final act is to comfort a child in German, because what he's going trough has taken him back to where it all began for him, seeing his people eradicated by an unstoppable force for simply existing. I'm raving about it, but I think it earns it. This looks like a kid's show, but it's for the grown up children who watched the show where they were young, and now can deal with the complexity of really great story telling.
@@JS-hw8veUsing the trains that were once used to exterminate his people to whip their oppressors as mutants - the intersectional crossing of race was amazing!
This was one of the greatest Marvel animated (maybe even Marvel things in general) that I've ever seen. The pacing was perfect. The writing was excellent. The art and animation was next level. This is truly peak Disney+, peak Marvel, and peak X-Men. SMH, Ryan Reynolds has an uphill battle ahead of him, man...
I'm with you on some of those, but in my opinion the pacing is way too fast. Sure it is consistent, but they are covering entire arcs in just one or two episodes. The writing and acting is good enough to make up for it, but they could do with spending a bit more time with each story, letting it sit for at least a little bit.
I'm only a couple of months older than DeMayo and while I'm not a part of similar social scenes as DeMayo, his thoughts on this episode, why he pitched this to Marvel, and what all it meant to him was so heartfelt. Regardless of whether or not Marvel/Disney ever work things out with DeMayo, I'd love to see what he works on next.
Think I saw in the comments below, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Watcher in the sky over Genosha... Even re-watched the scene to make sure I actually saw him.
I saw him, definitely meant as an omen of what's soon to come in the episode. So often in the What If series the Watcher looks in right before huge tragedies that end worlds, so seeing him watching here works on a story level for sure.
Gambit gonna return... remember the scene in the intro where he fought side by side with nightcralwer? We never saw that scene in this episode!! That's going to happen in the future
I feel like this show has been handled so well so far. You can definitely feel the love and respect for the 90's series. It is nice to have a genuine fan at the helm. Personally, I feel like episode 5 in particular was handled perfectly. I am the type of guy who, it's hard for me to cry. Even when I actively want to, I just can't. So when I say I cried three times watching this episode, and the last time was an all out bawl at the end... Best believe I loved this episode. And while there was something that was clearly getting hung up on in this video review... Let's just say it for what it is... Magneto grooming Rogue... It was handled in a way that genuinely make sense for the maturity of this series. It is another way in which Eric is a man with good intentions, but often handles things in the wrong way... I look forward to see what's next.
currently reading Krakoa era X-Men so the Krakoan vibe were not lost on me. As someone who was puzzled at the lasergun logic of the show I was not ready for this, I really thought they would do soft Krakoa with Genosha. What we got was... something else, Gambit was my favorite X-Man growing up but I was always somewhat frustrated to find not much comics with him outside of Claremont were he really clicked with me. This was awesome, very very cool he really came off as a true hero.
I loved it. Best American animated show I've ever watched. You don't often see American animation go this hard. It actually gave me strong Attack on Titan vibes.
She’s defending her turf. She doesn’t properly know who she even is right now, but she knows Scott is good for her and she wants to keep him, so yeah, she goes hard when the other woman Who Is The Same Woman tries to move in
You can see how the show can benefit from a better budget because when I heard the song that Rogue and Magneto danced to, I was thinking that it sounded quite like Ace Of Base, and when I heard the lyrics turned out to be their song Happy Nation! But it is not only an era appropriate song, but also thematically relevant, as the lyrics mention an idyllic nation but also includes the line "a man will die, but not his ideas" which became more relevant with the end of the episode. Marvel is really fulfilling everyone's dream we this show, not only is faithful to its original show but also elevates it, really great job from the people at Marvel animation.
Really interested to see some inspiration from the Krakoa era already seeping into what's effectively the first major X project post disney buyout. If they have enouch seasons to build to it i'd be so down to seeing Krakoa era gettiog adapted or seeing how it influences future x projects
Episode 4 lulled us into a false sense of security. jubilee's story was light, and bright nostalgia bait that specifically reminded us how easy Sentinels were to beat in all our old X-men gams and then Episode 5 came in to remind us Sentinels are f**king terrifying. And deadly.
I watched the entire original series in preparation for '97. When I reached this episode I texted my best friend "you have to watch this series". He said he wanted to watch the original first and I said "don't bother, just watch the new one". He was born in 88 so he watched a lot of it when he was a kid, we both know what the X-Men are. The context you need this series provides. I just needed someone to talk about this episode.
Loved the Episode. If I had to take a guess, Apocolyspe is the brain behind all of this. Why? That's how the original showrunners wanted it to end. Why you think about it, Apocolyspe is the perfect big bad to end the X-Men. Magneto is not dead. His death was way too ambiguous in that comic book sort of way. If I had to take a guess, he will come back as Xorn, reveal a plot, etc. Last but not least I think the're moving twords a Morrison/Ghost-Box esk roster. Right on time as they enter the 00's.
Gambit was hot wearing that suit. Gambit dying was shocking but I’m positive he’ll come back. I do think Mystique will show up before the season ends. Is Scott going on a mini villain arc?!
With Cable around, I just need a 12th Doctor Capaldi Face The Raven moment of "I can't fix this.... but you can. Fix this, fix this now!" Beau DeMayo clarified that Rogue's age was early 20's when she met Magneto, then again, that just depends if you can't stand large age gaps.
I loved the episodes. The Mojo one felt like it was honouring nostalgia but also showing how it can be a bad thing. Then episode five… oh my god. The messy relationship drama was pure X-Men, and then the horrors of what happened next. And that closing line? Chef’s kiss, fantastic. I’m also with you on Val Cooper. It feels like she’s got to be Mystique.
I'm still so upset. As soon as the first explosion happened I started to cried and I kept after it ended. It was so well done but darn was it emotional. It pulled a lot of personal fears I have out.
I loved the episode. I’ve never been a Gambit fan but here the portrayal was excellent. And I’m glad Rogue chose him ultimately over Magneto. Seeing Rogue as a powerhouse was also great. One thing that did not get enough attention in my mind is how easily Scott lost his cool with Trish Tilby. Could it be that Scott was mentally manipulated into giving up baby Nathan? And now he’s realizing it? And if Scott becomes more belligerent towards humans who will be there push for Xavier’s dream? Wolverine? Storm? I’m so excited to see where this show goes.
As soon as I saw the Watcher in the sky during the fireworks, I knew something bad was going to happen. I mean, they had been telegraphing it all along with the 'super happy mutant kids hooray!' vibe, but that was where I knew it was imminent,
Greatly enjoyed Logan being an honourable friend in that moment. And Gambit! While I’m sure he’ll be back somehow, he was just a perfect hero this episode with an incredible final moment.
Why would you never expect to care about Leech? He's always been used as the morlock to tug at the heartstrings for poor downtrodden vulnerable child. His very existence is to make you care about him. Poor Leech
I was absolutely not prepared for how brutal this episode was going go. It's going to take me a bit of time, and possible another viewing, to properly collect my thoughts on it.
The part I loved the most about episode 5 is the interview highlighting the miscommunication of both Scott and jean How when they are recalling the events of one of their previous dates they both made assumptions about how the other felt after the Phoenix and the fact it implies that they never cleared up these assumptions they had towards each other
I personally love the relationship aspect of episode 5 so much. Not only because I'm always here for soap opera level drama from the x-men but because all of the messy decisions being made felt so rooted in the characters rather than just drama for the sake of drama. Scott being drawn to Madelyn because of their shared loss, Jean feeling adrift and seeking comfort in Logan, Logan recognizing that and telling her she's meant to be with Scott. The betrayal and frustration is all so well written and compelling. And the same is true for Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit. There are no easy answers just the messiness of human relationships. I feel like so much of the shipping talk surrounding this show is centring on who did who wrong which feels like a narrow way of engaging with the show imo.
4 was great as a Jubilee fan, it was nice to see her get a spotlight in this season. And yeah, sparks definitely flew after the fade out. 5 was just ... the best. I'm a Gambit/Rogue shipper so I loved their interaction & relationship stuff. And Gambit in the finale, I'll say it, he puts Levi Ackerman to shame. Loved the cameos throughout Genosha & the cross between Hellfire Innner Circle & Krakoan council. I can't wait to see where they go with the rest of the episodes.

Wasn't ready for episode 5. Remy was a real one to the very end.
Seeing the Watcher looking down like in the last issue of the Onslaught arc, I knew things were about to go off for the mutants. Adapting Cassandra Nova’s attack on Genosha was somehow still beyond my expectations!
Romy fan here
I’m just devastated lmao. Why they gotta kill Gambit like that… but at the same time they gave him like the best moments this episode. It was so good that I got something not named Dark Phoenix and actual storylines for a wider audience to experience. Also still love Rogue, thank god for Kurt and Magneto just being another goat is great
Happy Nation playing in the background of that dance scene was immediately red flags going off, like something is going to go down (especially when you go back and hear it in Madelyne's vision)!
10/10
Rogue holding Gambit reminded me of the Death of Superman a lot
“Gambit… it was a good episode for him.”
I think he’d beg to differ.
Gambit: Tell Rexsplode to eat his heart out and try to follow this.😎
Can we get a little bit of love for that lampshading of all the Original Series Lore Dumps?
"I was possessed by an interstellar being."
"Yeah, Phoenix."
"Oh, right, you were there."
😂
That ending man. With Rogue and Gambit. Just wow, I loved it. I was watching it with a friend and we were losing our minds all the way. Magneto and Rogue's dance scene was so dapper. Just 2 people flying in the air dancing. I was shocked by the blood but I don't mean that in a bad way. Really enjoyed seeing how hard they pushed this episode. My emotions were everywhere.
And it was kinda spot on with Remy saving the Morlocks...seeing as he lead the Marauders to them back in the day...
Wow, to think all those times Rogue and Magneto fought in the old series, secretly they were remembering their old romantic interludes together... Must have been so hard to pretend it never happened all those times...
Lenore Zann broke my heart and I love her for it
Lenore swung for the goddamn fences with her performance in episode 5.
I tear up every time I hear “I can’t feel you”
For those who say Lenore Zane’s Rogue voice sounds too old and should by replace, she more than proved why they still kept her.
Sounds way more like woman reaching her mutant mid-life crisis which is appropriate.@@mrlogan-ut2te
As someone who was born in 2004 I can see why people loved the X-men cartoon in the 90s
It was such a missed opportunity for Magneto not to say "welcome to die!" In the motendo episode.
I was waiting for him to say, "I am Magneto, master of magnet!".
I'm confident Cable is gonna go back in time and retcon thus episode I don't understand how people aren't seeing it
I was not ready for Gambit's death, my whole issue I've had with the season so far has been Rogue cheating on Gambit with Magneto because Gambit is my favourite of the group. And just wow I was not ready for his death
What I find most astounding is this animated kiddie show has already, thematically and theatrically, proven to be one of the most enjoyably consistent offerings of all of the Disney + / Marvel series produced IMHO.
That "Motendo" looks a lot like a Sega Genesis from the top. But the controller inputs on the front are different.
It looked like a 3 button Genesis controller to me?
The cartridge is almost a direct copy of X-Men 2 on the Sega Genesis. The X-Men games on Genesis are some of my favorite 2D platformers from the 90s.
@@joshuasanderson7359 Right, but I'm talking about the inputs, or where you plug the controllers in. The original Genesis had two input slots cut out in the front, both on the right side. The "Montendo" has two squarish moldings around the two input slots, and they are equally spaced, one left and one right.
@@bazbloodwolf Cool! I don't think I had any X-Men games, but I played a lot of Golden Axe.
@@Dougeb7 also a great game! I highly recommend the X-Men games if you can find a rom and emulator. You can cheese the first game with Nightcrawler. You can literally teleport through almost all the levels lol
X-Men went to Invincible levels with the last episode, utterly fantastic
@@HyattHyatt3179same I think they are trying to catch up everyone due to it being 30 years since an active plot occured
Episode 5 is so MESSY... in every way possible. I'm here for it
Think I saw in the comments below, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Watcher in the sky over Genosha...
Even re-watched the scene to make sure I actually saw him.
I saw him, definitely meant as an omen of what's soon to come in the episode. So often in the What If series the Watcher looks in right before huge tragedies that end worlds, so seeing him watching here works on a story level for sure.
Ohhhh, that's what it was! I rewound that part twice trying to figure what was superimposed over the sky before deciding "oh, it was just clouds."
Gambit gonna return... remember the scene in the intro where he fought side by side with nightcralwer? We never saw that scene in this episode!! That's going to happen in the future
I feel like the inner council bit also pulled a large bit from Magneto's era as head master where he was pat of the Hellfire Club.
this episode was pure insanity. For production and story it deserves an award 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’m in tears my boy!!!!! GAMBIT!!!!
The part when Magneto was painting rouge had me LAUGHING. And I needed that laugh when the end came.
That ending was a gut punch and secondary kick to the balls when turning over on accident.
The "Motendo" un-suspended my disbelief for a second since it looks nothing like a 90s Nintendo console and so much like a Sega Genesis.😂
The whole Genosha Massacre is the X-Men equivalent of the Shibuya Incident from Jujutsu Kaisen.
currently reading Krakoa era X-Men so the Krakoan vibe were not lost on me.
Episode 4 was crazy to watch while tripping, and episode 5 is genuinely the best adaptation of the Xmen outside of comics.
In my view, it's one of the best pieces of television I can think of.
The Motendo looking like a Sega Genesis is so good.
I'm going to miss Magneto in the opening credits... this episode was insane in the best ways.
Magneto being the rich man friend of my mom who want to "help" was my "i knew it" moment yeah i seen this before
I loved it. Best American animated show I've ever watched. You don't often see American animation go this hard. It actually gave me strong Attack on Titan vibes.
I said, "Holy shit!" multiple times while watching this episode. It was great and it even had Ace of Base! Great episode!
As a comic book fan , it both surprised and amazed me that they even hinted at some of the plots ! I loved it
Pretty hypocritical of Jean to flip out on Cyclops for a psychic relationship, when she's outside kissing Wolverine.
She’s defending her turf. She doesn’t properly know who she even is right now, but she knows Scott is good for her and she wants to keep him, so yeah, she goes hard when the other woman Who Is The Same Woman tries to move in
@@RemySchraderAn explanation isn’t the same as an excuse. I can understand it while also thinking it’s insanely hypocritical
@@RemySchradershe is doing a poor job of defending it lmao
@@RemySchraderher weak ass can't even have kids without fainting probably
Y’all would benefit from applying your ear to hear a theme
"Motendo" had BIG Claremont/Byrne vibes. VERY slice-of-life stuff
I also got the Sims vibes from the sparkles. You are not alone. lol
The Watcher was there as the attack happened. It's going to be multiverse stuff like always lol.
With Cable around, I just need a 12th Doctor Capaldi Face The Raven moment of "I can't fix this.... but you can. Fix this, fix this now!"
Beau DeMayo clarified that Rogue's age was early 20's when she met Magneto, then again, that just depends if you can't stand large age gaps.
He's been out there answering all the questions lol except the one I'm most curious about which is what happened????
I was stunned and on the verge of tears. Holy. Shit. This show goes hard in ways I've desperately wanted any Marvel anything to in a while.
Emma Frost: "I saw what you did there Disney." 😂
I mean, they had been telegraphing it all along with the 'super happy mutant kids hooray!' vibe, but that was where I knew it was imminent,
Dang so no partying for mutants
Greatly enjoyed Logan being an honourable friend in that moment. And Gambit! While I’m sure he’ll be back somehow, he was just a perfect hero this episode with an incredible final moment.
It broke my heart. I sobbed.
They played Ace of Base during the dance. For Gambit they should've included Ace of Spades.
Leech is one of those characters that I never thought I would care about, but his moments have been handled so poignantly that he broke me.
Why would you never expect to care about Leech? He's always been used as the morlock to tug at the heartstrings for poor downtrodden vulnerable child. His very existence is to make you care about him.
Poor Leech
@@UnderChromey I guess the original series didn't do a very good job with him.
Thank you for your in depth insight and analysis!
I've watched episode 5 four times now, and I've cried every time.
I was absolutely not prepared for how brutal this episode was going go. It's going to take me a bit of time, and possible another viewing, to properly collect my thoughts on it.
The part I loved the most about episode 5 is the interview highlighting the miscommunication of both Scott and jean
How when they are recalling the events of one of their previous dates they both made assumptions about how the other felt after the Phoenix and the fact it implies that they never cleared up these assumptions they had towards each other
I personally love the relationship aspect of episode 5 so much.
What an episode. One of the greatest from the series. I can't wait for next week.
First episode that I didn’t cry on first watching. I was too upset with Rogues dance and rejection to go there so quick.
ep 5 made me cry when magneto was talking to leech
>draws a sega genesis
>names it after nintendo
"Hello, fellow '90s gamer kids!"
Thanks for both reactions and in-depth review for ‘97
Thank you Sasha! I’ve been waiting for this vid since the episode ended (3:35 am my time lol)
I watched the eps last night and one of my first thoughts was oh Casually Comics is going to have a lot of fun with this one.
This was insane 😮😢 I love every minute
4 was great as a Jubilee fan, it was nice to see her get a spotlight in this season. And yeah, sparks definitely flew after the fade out. 5 was just ... the best. I'm a Gambit/Rogue shipper so I loved their interaction & relationship stuff. And Gambit in the finale, I'll say it, he puts Levi Ackerman to shame. Loved the cameos throughout Genosha & the cross between Hellfire Innner Circle & Krakoan council. I can't wait to see where they go with the rest of the episodes.
