The early fan-fiction stories can be traced back to 1893, when readers were furious that Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was battling Prof. Moriarty in "The Final Problem" and fell to his death. (Temporarily, as it turns out) So the early fan clubs began writing their own alternate stories where Holmes faked his death and lived. When Doyle brought Holmes back in " The Empty House" in 1903, he took this idea from the fans to reveal Holmes did fake his death.
Similar, though maybe not classified as fan fiction by stricter definitions, is the story of Don Quixote. The author wrote the first book, but didn't think it was a great work so put a sequel in the back burner while writing/ doing other jobs. A publisher and writer seeing money left on the table wrote their own un-offical sequel that was so terrible it forced the author to stop what he was doing, write the sequel, and end the story so no one can do something like that again.
There’s something adorably wholesome about Alfred sharing his fanfiction with Bruce and Bruce humoring him by reading them and encouraging his goofy fixation. It’s undeniably quirky and weird but for them it’s somewhat charming.
If Alfred enables Bruce's obsession with brutalizing mentally ill people in a bat costume with high tech weapons and incredible martial arts skill, I think Bruce owes him that.
Always challenge the odds. Man, can you believe Batman in real life. Elon Musk would just sleep all day and try to avoid mentioning why Batman has a network of satellites and a social media site just like his.
Fanfiction is indeed ubiquitous. One of the most famous examples is the Aeneid-commissioned fanfiction of Homer that Virgil, the author, was so embarrassed by that his dying wish was to have all copies of it burned.
I grant you this, if your bar is so low you already praise BAD SEQUELS, then fan-made sequels blend right in and those fan fics can be equally "good". They make you remember the previous works being good, without that pesky "notice something new with every re-read" effect. Just notice something OLD for the first time, with "but this time we made it with Velma as Seinfeld". Or it can spark fandom like The sorrows of Young Werther that's all really just about the fans themselves, navel gazing. Insistence that calling themselves fans or buying the IP makes them know better.
Virgil wasn't embarrassed. he was a perfectionist, always trying to make the poem better but he got sick and couldn't finish so He didn't want to have only half of the poem "published "
@LowellLucasJr. AMVs are fan edited videos thar traditionally blend clips from anime with popular music. RPF is a subgenre of fanfiction focusing on real people rather than fictional characters, most commonly celebrities.
You know, I can picture the Cesare Romero version of Joker getting old, living in a modest house, tending flowers, all while still scheming crimes in his mind and I find that image charming.
No shame in missing something with a 80 year history, especially when admitting it ,& acknowledging those who pointed it out …Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
Not sure if anyone has said but when the older Joker pulls out his extra long gun, to shoot at whatever he's shooting at; it reminded me of the gun Jack Nicholson's costumed Joker used, when he shoots the Bat-plane down near the end of the Batman film.
I love how Alfred thinks that the next generation absolutely can't handle themselves and they'll always need old Batman. This is like if Batman Beyond had Bruce always going out to bail Terry out of situations.
I had that hardcover Book “Batman from the 30s to the 70s” It was like an Omnibus long before Omnibuses existed I thought “How Cool! Able to read (and re-read) decades-old Batman comic books without having to buy the original comics ! “ I always wished they had done more :)😉
I must have checked that book out from my local library a dozen times! NGL the only bad part is that it wasn't all in color! I literally never knew that Batwoman's costume was yellow until she showed up on this channel!
My mother brought that and the Superman version for my brother and I for our thirteenth birthday in 1979. I lost count of the number of times I read it. I think I still have it somewhere. Hope so because I don't want to let it go.
It was disappointing the whole book isn't in color, no doubt due to the expense, but I appreciated having more pages with most in black in white, than fewer all in color. HOWEVER, there was no excuse for printing the Silver Age Joker & Luthor team up story in color.... except for the last two pages, suddenly in black & white...! Very jarring. That, plus the fact that adventures with the Penguin were promised, but not a single one was included, always puzzled me.@@Therese504
Just to add another layer, in the final act of "For the Man Who Has Everything", Batman gets under the influence of the Black Mercy to free Superman. Later, in the final pages, when asked how is he, Batman comments about dreaming that he was married to Katie Kane and having a teenage child... which might be a reference on Moore's part.
I appreciate this followup covering the original comics. They came out even before my time, but I saw most of them as reprints in the 1970s, especially those 100-Page Spectaculars they did, where you'd have one, or maybe two new stories, and the rest were all reprints. DC in the 70s desperately wanted to remind the reader of the 'rich' history they had!
Brave and the Bold is such an underappreciated gem of a series. Like most DC fans, I got nuts for BTAS. But this would easily be my second favorite animated Batman series without question. And as amazing as Conroy was in the role, you have to love Deitrich Bater as Batman. He really nails this type of story and tone well.
That scene where old Batman chats with old Joker is oddly… brilliant. Even if the Joker going straight was a ruse, there’s somthing bittersweet about two arch enemies talking as retired old men.
Old Joker was also featured in a JSA annual that focused on Earth2 Robin and Huntress written by Geoff Johns. Also the guy in the top hat that’s in the Batman ‘66 homage looks to be The Robber Baron. An early possibly one and done villain Batman fought in the Golden Age. 😊
Good catch. I was just going to bring up how the Joker in that issue (JSA Annual 1 from 08) is also wheelchair-bound, which probably was inspiration for how he was depicted in this episode.
It's so insightful when Alfred writes his fictional view of what Batman's successor, Batman II, and declares that no-one except Batman and Robin can read it. Bruce replies the public wouldn't believe it anyway. Interesting that this was published in 1969, marking Batman's 30th anniversary in DC comics. 😄🦇🦇
That Batman outfit with the big shiny metallic bat on his chest reminded me of Justice Lords Batman, but it's unlikely their intent as I don't see why they'd want to refer to that Batman in the context of the show.
The other story that seems referenced here is John Byrne's Generations, in which Dick (Batman) Grayson and Bruce (Robin) Wayne Jr. go up against a Joker's son, who ends up being the OG Joker.
One of the first Batman comic books I read as a child had an Alfred-written Tale of the Future with the second Batman-Robin team. The last of these stories was in Batman 163..."Bat-Girl, Batwoman II."
Damian's costume looks more like an armored call back to nightwing and batmans costume. To honor his father and his older brother but also show he's going to do his own thing and the more tech oriented stuff of the future.
So, there's an episode of Super Friends/Guardians that was the first on screen depiction of the Wayne Murders, and that creater went on to work on Batman The Animated Series decades later. You might like looking into that episode.
That future Batsuit reminds me of a Batman Returns toy I had when I was a kid... Almost identical, actually. I think it came with a penguin with a rocket launcher?
One possible future that is seemingly forgotten is Batman #300, " The Last Batman.Story-- ?" which featured Dick Grayson about 30 years of age as sole protector of Gotham or is he as he is married to Barbara, who is Batwoman. Bruce became governor of the state and married to Catwoman. Dick and Bruce married who I ship them with, and Grayson succeeded Bruce. I would have loved to have gone further, and he took the bat cowl, if only in a follow-up.
I love how every Batman show seems to have so much genuine love and care and admiration of the comics while reinventing and coming up with new things .
Part of me wishes Dick and Damian wore the Batman and Robin II outfits in the episode. I'm kind of surprised they aren't here tbh, they're just the kind of silly that TBATB loved.
I'd note that 'Con's and fan-fic existed before the 60's or TOS. They were based around written SF, and they grew to include SF films and yes, cos play (Forrest Ackerman, go dig through his life). That then went and morphed as Comics and TV took precedence and then it all split into separate threads. TV, Movies and Comics became to famous Con's, Books became a seperate line, although they do have the Hugo awards for DILM & TV stories. So the 60's is where it went big, but they were around a couple of decades before then. Just a younger less sophisticated version.
So dark-haired Bruce Wayne and dark-haired Kathy Kane have a red-haired child? So much for 'World's Greatest Detective.' Bruce Wayne junior or should I say... Bruce Luthor!
Hello ! I have find another reference coming from The Knights of Tomorrow ! The Old Joker comes from the Justice Society of America Annual #1 (2008) of Geoff Johns and Fernando Pasarin. In this comics Joker from Earth 2 is old, in a wheelchair with balloons on it, exactly like in the episode of BTBATB forementionned, hope you'll see it ! Have a good day ! :D
This video is exactly why I love this channel so much!! There's so much history that references other points of history that we don't know about. That's what always amazes me about comic books.
Batman from the 30’s to the 70’s…such a great book! I first found it when it was published in the 1970’s at my local library. As an adult I found it again on Amazon and bought myself a copy😊
It's somehow nice to know that the modern comic writers have the same problem writing Batman out of stories that moderns do. Such a pity, because Wayne Family Adventures showed me that there is room for the Bat Family to stand on their own, with Batman as a supporting or side character, not needing to save them.
While I have to, as always, dispute that Wertham had anything to do with shelving Selina and creating Kathy and Betty, the most glaring thing about the "II" stories is the red-headed Bruce Jr. Was Alfred unaware of genetics? Able to honor Kathy, yet subtly accuse her of infidelity? Clearly, red-headed Junior is seen in and out of costume that way. An interesting possibility is the red-headed son of two brunettes, Dick Tracy's Junior, was an influence, who also, through his marriage to science fiction-based Moon Maid, influenced Dick and Starfire.
There's actually a fourth story with Batman II and Robin II, what I remember of it was the ending where Batman and Robin come into the study while Alfred is writing the climax and tell him how Robin saved the day, which inspires Alfred to have Robin II save the day in a similar manner. I'm pretty sure this is separate because it didn't have Bruce or Alfred winking at the readers.
Man, I'm glad you did another episode of this, I watched all of Batman the Brave and the Bold last year and was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was! And watching all your videos delving deeper into the references and inspirations has made my appreciation of all the work put into the show grow more and more. Thank you for continuing to make vids about this show, they're very well made and a fun watch every time. Also can't get over just how important fanfiction is to history in general, or how old it is, it's nuts
What is your options of the 3 mini series by John Byrne , Superman and Batman Generations ? This review you just did made me think you might enjoy this else world story series.
14:42 - I really feel like the future Batman costume is a mashup of different things, but heavily pulls from the Azrael-Batman costume…. The armor chest plate that extends up to pointy shoulders, the bat emblem on it, the belt, the gauntlets, and especially the strap around the thigh!
I think Alfred is just trying to cope with the idea that he knows how that life of reckless vigilantism is going to end sooner or later. Perhaps he's doing some self therapy to deal with the emotional stress of knowing any of this days Bruce's luck is going to run out, or maybe he just wants to delude himself into believing everything will still be fine, even after Bruce is gone. Who knows? Certainly not me.
Batman visit retired Joker and having him not approve of the new young Joker while secretly supporting him reminded me so much of the Flash TV show Trickster. With Hamil's Trickster not approving of the new young Trickster only to be supporting him from in prison. I doubt this comic inspired the show idea but just a fun connection I made
Have to recommend the ElseWorlds Superman & Batman: Generations 1 & 2 (1999 & 2001) by John Byrne. They’re very much in the spirit of those Batman stories,
Made me wonder if Lee Falks The Phantom had numbers on his chest to show which incarnationg he was... but I guess that would spoil the illusion that he lives forever 🙂
Regarding Joker's sons, I always prefer the one from Generations, where it turns out to be just Joker wearing one of those young self masks from back to the future 2.
Is Alfred ok?
No he's not😂😂
He had to raise THAT kid (and every single stray he brought in after the fact) and hasn't taken a vacation in 30 years.
Would you be?
He was in the military, none of these people are okay
My theory is that Alfred's been binging your fanfic vids on your old channel. :)
I'm reminded of one of his lines from the Batman's Grave: 'I'm permanently ripped to the gills on high quality crack cocaine, sir!'.
