Great breakdown, Sasha. On a side note, I was super distracted by Xavier's new voice actor - every time he spoke it reminded me of the Invincible cartoon, but I couldn't place the voice! I had to pause and look it up; it's Ross Marquand, who voices the Immortal. Now I can't un-hear it, lol.
I liked this episode and it didn't feel like a "filler" episode. They easily could've done one to draw out tension from the end of episode 5. Xavier's part is a good "what has he been up to?" plus him realizing why he has to return to Earth. And the Storm part is satisfying just to see her get her powers back, even if it felt really abbreviated/accelerated from the source material in the comics.
Fun fact: I believe they used the whole "Power of electricity allows the user to make clothes" thing with Livewire from Superman The Animated Series, as well. Something about ionized air or the like.
Any fabric is just a chemical formula of carbon, hydrogen & oxygen. Since the air has traces of each of those elements & Ororo can manipulate the weather into any chemical formula she wants, she can make clothes.
I don't think a streaming service that drops a whole season at once needs a "Previously On" segment before each episode, but if your show takes a break for 27 years it would be nice to have a little refresher on what was happening.
Nope! You're not alone. I went back to rewatch Maddie and Ororo's conversation to see if I had missed something. The only lie I could see her telling herself was that she was better off leaving the mansion as quickly as she did. PS - Forge and Ororo forged (pun fully intended) their relationship pretty quickly in the comic as well. I'm glad she moved into forgiveness in this adaptation because he told her as opposed to her finding out on her own. That was the reason she left his home when she did in the original story. I dug the power couple that was Storm and Black Panther, but I always shipped Ororo and Forge. Also, the team was told he would have to be saved AND recover under Shiar care. He's been gone a year. Why is he acting like he was gone for sooooooooooooooo long he's going to have to explain himself? They knew the score! This feels like foreshadowing a problem that doesn't need to happen.
I ❤ X-Men 97 for what they are doing, I feel like the show has grown up with me. The 92 X-Men animated series was my Intro to wanting to read the comics as a kid & I super gotten into reading the Morrison era & the 00s Ultimate Universe X-Men comics
I think the best part was when Gladiator took an attack meant for the Emperess, and hoped the empresses sister in the face. Like "What did you think was gonna happen?" That followed by Xavier ringing the bell as he puts school in session.
Storm, unpowered, at one point in the comics was able to beat Cyclops in a danger room scenario to lead the XMen! She was able to accept herself without powers and then eventually got them back. I would have liked her to remain unpowered and with her mohawk a little longer.
Love the episode, even though as you said it was taking a step backwards, but probably a interlude we needed…The two stories were interwoven nicely, the guests stars Amazing, & Storm getting her powers back Awesome, except IMO her hair growing back & getting her OG costume was a bit much fan service…& Although I didn’t initially catch the differences in her conversation with Jean & how she discussed it with Forge ,yeah I see them now…& if she was just trying to comfort Jean it’s not like she could hide her true feelings from her 🤷🏾♂️ …Anyway I’m ready too strap in for what I anticipate to be a E Ticket Ride ( a old school Disneyland reference) of a finishing 3 episodes…Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
So, I took the costume manifesting being the demon's magic being used by Storm to form the costume as you see the feathers malting away. I later saw Beau DeMayo confirm this on Twitter when someone else brought it up
@@CasuallyComics yeah, I don't normally go on Twitter nowadays but I wanted to look up something and I saw his reply right there. I was totally surprised as I thought he wasn't going to engage much
This was a great video, but I have to say I disagree with your take on Storm's storyline. To me, it came across as an exploration of the negative feelings she has towards her powers which is why the dream of being human was so tempting. They didn't explore it previously because she was talking to comfort "Jean", but she had to have some conflict with her powers in order for her to even come up with the dream of being human and not part of the mutant/human conflict. This also is hinted at in the first episode when she responds to Bishop saying that she wants to give people a chance to walk away before leaping into the fight. Showing that she's holding herself to a higher (perhaps unattainable?) standard, which implies a complicated stance on her own powers vs other mutants. Still this was a great video and I'm hoping that, despite the epic way he went out, Gambit returns in one way or another. *fingers crossed*
Loved the Episode. Deathbird was awesome (as she should be), kink-bot Chuck was great, and i LOVED the old school Storm costume. It's still moving through these storylines SUPER fast, but I appreciate them being shown.
I think with Sinister being hinted to be the one behind the wild Sentinel, and with Cable in play trying to 'stop him'; i reckon that the serise big bad will be Stryfe.
I’d like Stryfe, Onslaught, the Shadow King, Mystique, and Sinister to all be baddies together vs Rachel, Cable, Quentin and the other telepaths. What a fun season 2 subplot
11:11 Damn, New Sun would be a deep pull. I don't think there's much chance of X-Men '97 bringing her in and justifying the coverage, but I would love to see a Black Womb Project & Amanda Mueller video. Let the world know about the Summers (possible?) great great evil granny.
I really liked Storm's half of the story, personally. I'm glad she'll be heading back to the team; she needs to be with her family and they need her. Ororo can be a tricky character to get right, and overall, the series is doing an amazing job at adapting one of her most pivotal stories. The space opera... I LOVED Deathbird. Let me get that out first. She was pitch-perfect. And the Vulcan cameo was sweet! I wasn't really missing Charles, though. I'd personally have liked more without him, maybe holding him back until the second season. Let the X-Men handle this major crisis without him, deal with the aftermath, be super-competent, and have him come back to "fix" things, only to get reamed out that he didn't call sooner. Maybe that will happen. Charles says he needs to get back, but there's no guarantee he'll be able to return immediately (though I think most of the Shi'Ar council would be happy to shunt him home ASAP).
"Purple Superman?!" Dang - such disrespect for the Praetor of the Imperial Guard! Also, since the IG are meant to be Legion expys, wouldn't that make him "Purple Superboy?"
I think I agree with your assessment of Storm's arc in this Lifedeath adaptation. I got where it was going but in the end the emotional beats just didn't fully land with me. The scene of her regaining her powers, though, was glorious.
I agree, Storm got her powers back way too fast. If Vulcan is with the Shi’ar empire and they’re already beefing with the Kree my theory is War of Kings is on the way. Not sure how it’ll work though cuz the professor is gonna be Emporer
Charles is giving up his life with Lilandra to go back and be with his X-Men and focus on human-mutant coexistence. He won't be emperor and he doesn't get to live happily ever after with the person he loves. Him leaving also conveniently provides Deathbird and Vulcan an opportunity to usurp the throne.
I thought I was one of the few Cable fans laeft walking this earth. I like seeing that there are others that have their great Cable stories they enjoy.
Yeah, I’d agree that what Storm said to Forge didn’t quite match up with the conversation with Madelyne, and it felt super rushed her already getting her powers back already, but I loved seeing her original uniform. Also, it’s been great seeing other characters get the spotlight for a change, but as a huge Wolverine fan, I’m ready for a Wolverine centric episode. Not asking for him to take the spotlight for the whole series, but one episode would be nice lol Overall though, I’m still loving it! Can’t wait until the next episode!
I want to change Cassandra Nova’s origin to something other than mummudrai weird Shi’ar parasite thing to an alternate reality Charles Xavier (just like MCU Ancient One is Tilda Swinton) and Cassandra is in 616 through her ability to link with alternate reality minds of herself and manifest a body using that universe’s Xavier. She could also be the reason why Xavier became self aware and mutant gene activated in the womb, not waiting until puberty like most mutations.
Sasha, have you ever talked about the Team Titans, the Titans from the future that included a vampire, a megazord and a bdsm evil Nightwing with nipple piercings? I need to watch someone talk about this....
Not that I'm a big Cassandra Nova fan, but I admit I was a little disappointed that Mr. Sinister was revealed to be behind the Genosha attack. I mean, it just kind of feels like we've been seeing a lot of him, and while I don't think Mr. Sinister wouldn't be responsible for the Genova Genocide, I do hope they actually explain why he wanted so many mutants dead. I am tentatively willing to give them the chance to land the story, though, as I already love the fact we actually got the be in the genocide and see it first-hand, as opposed to what E for Extinction did. Also, I am perfectly fine if they bring Gambit back as a Horseman.
Specifically to Storm, I feel the idea was how she was trying to convince herself she was better without powers, rationalize her own feelings and even recontextualize why she had said before. TBH I felt that the point was that a lot of what she said before regaining her powers was BS, and not necessarily the Adversary's fault, who just was mining her insecurity. It's like, how easy is for Storm to lie to herself. To me it mostly works, but the issue is that is mostly just self reflection and no interaction beyond Forge, so it comes across as she is oscillating between feelings. Maybe it would have come across clearer if we saw this arc with more characters or situations to bounce of, but with the Adversary and Forge existing solely as foils as her, it was all very much an introspective journey that perhaps didn't go as hard as it could have gone. Maybe Lifedeath could have been a single episode that truly committed to the journey to the center of the mind, but the themes we got were one of my favorites of the show so far!
While it's awesome Storm is metaphorically reborn, it's a pity we didn't get to see Ororo defeat Cyclops for leadership of the team without her powers. Swapping Mr. Sinister for Cassandra Nova makes sense since she's so messy, but then why does Vulcan cameo? "Deadly Genesis" was a horrible retcon!
Storm’s return was definitely a wonderful one for sure but I do agree everything on her end was fast but I did expect that both her and Charles got the message late regarding Genosha. Not to mention as a best way to focus on both of them.
I was delighted that it started in space. I knew immediately that meant Xavier was coming back in this episode. Also, does nobody know anything about Gladiator? He’s the damn Superman of Marvel. He wrecks anyone he comes up across. Like everyone approaches him like they ain’t about to be knocked into the next galaxy.
One thing I noticed is they added Nightcrawler to the intro. So I hope they pull one more thing from E from Extinction, Nightcrawler joining the team because he has no where else to go, like they did with Emma.
11:49 There's also some people who belive that the big villain in the end of these season will be Apocalypse, since the Genosha incident fits with his motivation, of manipulating events in order to push humanity and mutants into a war. His apperance would justify Sinister and Cable presence in the series and explain how Gambit could come back to life (in this case Apocalypse could ressuect him as one of his Horsemen).
"No! They were dancing, drinking wine, making love!" This is why people are afraid of Xavier; it's not because he's dangerous, it's because he's a creeper.
@@notavailable2590 He had to keep tabs on the birthing garden though otherwise the orgy would get outta hand :( at least he’s not as messy or nosy as Emma … most of the time
I really think we needed to check in on Storm more without her powers before giving them back. Maybe an episode where she meets Yukio, who has a lot of fun without being a mutant.
I wouldn't mind having Gambit back, since the show already did that for Morph, but then again I'm very bias towards Gambit and I have always wanted some of his background as a Marauder animated. There's not a lot of Gambit outside the comics in general
I thought the Storm section was fine for what it was, my main thought is that I think it would have been better served if Lifedeath had been its own entire episode instead of being split with two other stories.
I love the Storm costume. Big fan of the headpieces for her. I was never big on the X-Men space plots. I have a feeling Age of Apocalypse will show up by the end. Bishop was trying to avoid his future and instead created Cable's. It'll be interesting
I can see your point on Storm’s resurgence of power not quite hitting the mark, just being a little off center. I’m in the camp that it would have been fine if she had came back to the X-Men, sent Cyclops to Divorce Court, led the team, and regained her powers at a later point. Buuuut, Charles is coming back. That seems like it was always the design of the show. I think the space & desert operas compounded with each other to provide what both of the relationships went through, i.e what wasn’t shown between Forge & Storm was demonstrated through the scenes with Xavier and Lilandra. Using themes of “pretending” and “believe the lie” that there is something tangible from keeping one from their family. Even though we didn’t get the purest adaptation of “Lifedeath”, I’m glad we can add The Adversary to the roster of X-Men animated villains. Perhaps taking a closer look of which animals keep recurring in future seasons may provide a hint on the demon’s return.
I much rather have Sinister being behind the Genosha attack then Cassandra Nova. This show is supposed to be a continuation of X-Men: TAS, I'd prefer to see characters from that show get explored more then having new characters getting shoehorned into an old narrative.
I kind of feel like them showing Vulcan is one of those easter eggs that detracts instead of adds to the show. instead of them building up his plot like in the comics, he's just there... with the imperial guard... SOMEHOW! kind of like the stuff with X-Factor (like the whole deal with Scott's brother Alex) felt more like a tease in the original show (and still in this one) instead of it building up to something.
When there is a death of a main character in a story (much less multiple main characters) that includes both Bishop AND Cable, I’m okay with bringing them back quickly because you know it’s going to happen anyway.
I've watched all the available episodes this week, and i like the show. I also think fans have hyoed it up as being more than it actually is. It's good, but not joygasmic good like others make it out to be. I would have liked to have seen Storm without her powers longer, and the fight between her and Cyclops for X-Men leadership. That would have been awesome. I guess I'm just a bigger fan of the comics up until 2015.
Someone made a post on fb about how toxic Lilandra was in this series and I was like damn she really was like move in with my whole family and get a lobotomy to forget your foster kids.
I loved Xavier's anti imperialism lecture. It's something people don't really talk about any more here in the states since Obama normalized war for democrats. That made it refreshing radical and the sort of lesson about the world that is great to see im X-Men stories. It kind of makes me speculate that Beau may have been fired for being a little radical politically.
You were right on the mark. The Storm stuff, aside from the displays of her power and of course the fashion, has been rushed and very inconsistent. It’s telling to me that they couldn’t devote a whole episode to her arc and decided to split it up among two episodes where it wasn’t really the main story. And while I’m sure the nostalgia of using the original voice actress has its appeal for die hards, the over the top quality of her performance feels hammy to my ear.
Storm had such a banger of a line with an amazing score to back it up. And the horses. The original show had Storm and Rogue riding horses together where they used Storm's power as an allegory for how women of colour aren't allowed to be as wildly emotional as white women. Seeing Storm flying beside the stampede felt like a visual representation of her saying it's bullshit that she has to constantly rise above and be less outwardly emotional than others. And then she goes from composed to crying instead of tryign to be strong like in the original where she didn't cry in front of others; waiting until the jet was empty to grieve Morph and Beast. It does feel incomplete though, like the first episode where I said to myself "is that all?"
What plot do you think they'll pull from next?
Lorna accepting herself then she's mutant royalty
Edit: the yellow is nice

Great breakdown, Sasha. On a side note, I was super distracted by Xavier's new voice actor - every time he spoke it reminded me of the Invincible cartoon, but I couldn't place the voice! I had to pause and look it up; it's Ross Marquand, who voices the Immortal. Now I can't un-hear it, lol.
I wasn't ready to say goodbye to mohawk Storm!!!
When Deathbird said "GHETTO", I about cried from laughing EPIC!!!!
Twitter wanting to square up with Deathbird for calling us ghetto will forever be hilarious to me.
What? You mean like the twitter app?
Loved the visuals in this episode. The space explosion color palette brought me back to the 90s hard.

SPACE!
Hard to believe Pigs in Space is over 40 years old! The reference is always welcome.
Did people for get she could always do this? She did it in the First episode when the Sentinel was going after Jubilee in the Mall.
I don't think a streaming service that drops a whole season at once needs a "Previously On" segment before each episode, but if your show takes a break for 27 years it would be nice to have a little refresher on what was happening.
They need one because it's iconic to the show itself
Uh, what streaming service are you watching it on? Mine makes us wait a week between episodes
@@MisterTwitI think they only did the series drop for Echo.
I like it
The ammount of people who couldn't handle the phrase "making love" is insane.
I loved the energy and enthusiasm you had to just get straight to the discussion, lol really shows how passionate you are and love your job! 👍🏿😁
"NO! THEY WERE DANCING, DRINKING WINE MAKING LOVE" I can't help but laugh at that line
Gambit isn't dead! You take that back! 😅
Storm, unpowered, at one point in the comics was able to beat Cyclops in a danger room scenario to lead the XMen! She was able to accept herself without powers and then eventually got them back. I would have liked her to remain unpowered and with her mohawk a little longer.
Yes, I was so hoping for a depowered Storm to take the leadership. Scott and Jean could have them left to take care of Cable.
What no joke about how Charles doesn’t mind being called a pet? 😂
I’ve been watching your videos for some time now. And I am sooo happy that I get to watsh xmen 97 with you now!! Hugs from Argentina!
Usually female heroes wear more revealing and sexy clothes when they turn evil… nice to see Storm buck the trend
I think she was topless with her hair covering her in her first appearance.
@@notavailable2590 Artists loved to draw her naked back in the 70's and 80's, with just some fog or plants in the way.
@@brettwood1351 It was the style at the time.
Can I just say that Xavier was absolutely SLAYING in his entrance? They gave him SOOOOO much eyeliner 👀
He had to keep up with Lilandra the eyeliner queen.
Dope review , kinda wish Storm got her Jim Lee suit back though
Space makes everything better!
I later saw Beau DeMayo confirm this on Twitter when someone else brought it up
It's really cool that he engages with fans so much on twitter and answers questions like that.
@@CasuallyComics yeah, I don't normally go on Twitter nowadays but I wanted to look up something and I saw his reply right there. I was totally surprised as I thought he wasn't going to engage much
1st - Love the hair
2nd - OMG 😱😱😱 it was so good
This was a great video, but I have to say I disagree with your take on Storm's storyline.
They could have cut out the Jubilee part in 4 and just gave Storm and Professor X their own episodes.
Loved the Episode. Deathbird was awesome (as she should be), kink-bot Chuck was great, and i LOVED the old school Storm costume. It's still moving through these storylines SUPER fast, but I appreciate them being shown.
2:10
Didn’t know Storm was also a magical girl. Not that I’m complaining.
But man am I gonna miss that Mohawk.
The animators clearly LOVE Sailor Moon so of course we going to get another costume transformation and I'm here for it
Yeah, I got the feeling of a step being missing towards the moment Storm gets her powers back.
Let the world know about the Summers (possible?) great great evil granny.
thank you for covering xmen 97´ je l’adore
Deathbird was fantastic. 5/7 would recommend.
Him leaving also conveniently provides Deathbird and Vulcan an opportunity to usurp the throne.
my girlfriend who bgig xmen fan is just happy a xmen thing outside the comic remember froge also is trained in magic
"Froge" makes me think of Throg; now I want to see the frog version of Forge.
@@SimonBuchanNzsorry spelling names is hard learning disablie a bitch, but frog forge sounds cute
Storm's crown materializing when she came into her power made me think of MCU Scarlet Witch.
I thought I was one of the few Cable fans laeft walking this earth. I like seeing that there are others that have their great Cable stories they enjoy.
Agreed , DeMayo must be apart of the show !!! A must !!
Not asking for him to take the spotlight for the whole series, but one episode would be nice lol
Overall though, I’m still loving it! Can’t wait until the next episode!
I have a feeling they blended the demon days owl monster with Advasary with the owl creature.
Same reason he wanted Morlocks massacre? 🤷🏿
I see that JSA peeking out back there.
Welp to no one's surprise, Magneto is still alive. (He wouldve showed up in the vision for sure)
Even if he did he’s just too integral to toss away without a cool reprise
While it's awesome Storm is metaphorically reborn, it's a pity we didn't get to see Ororo defeat Cyclops for leadership of the team without her powers.
Swapping Mr. Sinister for Cassandra Nova makes sense since she's so messy, but then why does Vulcan cameo? "Deadly Genesis" was a horrible retcon!
Storm’s return was definitely a wonderful one for sure but I do agree everything on her end was fast but I did expect that both her and Charles got the message late regarding Genosha. Not to mention as a best way to focus on both of them.
Can't believe Charles is into pet play. The thirst is real in thia show and love it. Great episode, Storm plot felt a little rush but like it.
Nitpick: Would t Gladiator be “purple Superboy??”
Krakoa is a living island full of nosy telepaths.
@@notavailable2590 He had to keep tabs on the birthing garden though otherwise the orgy would get outta hand :( at least he’s not as messy or nosy as Emma … most of the time
Sinister makes more sense than anyone else. Especially with the supreme intelligence being missing. Like operation galactic storm.
I really think we needed to check in on Storm more without her powers before giving them back. Maybe an episode where she meets Yukio, who has a lot of fun without being a mutant.
We know gambit will come back to life because he showed up in the Spider-Man show
I wouldn't mind having Gambit back, since the show already did that for Morph, but then again I'm very bias towards Gambit and I have always wanted some of his background as a Marauder animated. There's not a lot of Gambit outside the comics in general
I thought the Storm section was fine for what it was, my main thought is that I think it would have been better served if Lifedeath had been its own entire episode instead of being split with two other stories.
I want Gambit to return so that Rouge can finally admit her feelings for him.
Well gambit is alive in the Spider-Man show with the technically after this show
I love the Storm costume. Big fan of the headpieces for her. I was never big on the X-Men space plots. I have a feeling Age of Apocalypse will show up by the end. Bishop was trying to avoid his future and instead created Cable's. It'll be interesting
They did AoA on the original series.
@starri they never finished. There was no real resolution to Cable's story.
Meanwhile me, still waiting for that point where Cyclops becomes Magneto 👀
~_~
I much rather have Sinister being behind the Genosha attack then Cassandra Nova. This show is supposed to be a continuation of X-Men: TAS, I'd prefer to see characters from that show get explored more then having new characters getting shoehorned into an old narrative.
Mohawk Storm is my fav.
Milky-way ghetto was just a great line read
Can you talk about the return of Flatline and maybe House of Brainiac too?
Little known fact. Stan Lee named Professor Charles Francis Xavier after the silent film star Francis Xavier Bushman .
