I always think that scene cops more criticism than it deserves. IMO it was *supposed* to be awkward. Flag is a goody-two-shoes put in charge of a crew of villains who'd happily shank him first chance they get. The point was that he was trying to be intimidating and failing at it.

And... it turned out astonishingly well, especially on the TV show. For John Cena's Peacemaker, the whole "fighting for peace" thing seems to be something he's tenuously adopted to give the arbitrary violence he was trained to commit some kind of meaning. Funny but also tragic.
There's a fair bit of the later DC Comics Peacemaker in the character, though they changed a lot of the details to update the story.

Back in the 80s and 90s, the irony of a man who would kill for peace wasn't lost on us, but I think we normalized it and embraced the attitude. Look at all our 80s action heroes. I don't think we ever questioned how ludicrous the idea was.

When DC started turning up in DC and I first saw him, I wondered if his name was ironic. The guy just seemed like he was constantly ready to kill somebody! Honestly, at least with the Comedian, you see there is a reason he started slipping downhill. Peacemaker in his old appearances is just hilarious! Like you said, he "doesn't want to do violence", but he has tons of custom ammo and he goes out of his way to kill people. I mean, I think they wanted him to be something like the Golden Age Sandman, who used to just use a gas gun to knock people out and went out of his way to NOT kill people, and even tried to save them if they ended up in a situation they would die. But that failed miserably!
It's kind of funny when you look at it. Sometimes I think the Batman of later years is kind of based off of Sandman more than the Golden Age Batman. The old-school Batman would ghost you in a heartbeat in the early 40's, whereas at the same time Sandman was a hero with scruples whose main equipment was a fast car, a harpoon gun for scaling buildings, and his gas gun for incapacitating thugs so they can be kept in check until the cops show up.

I remember him crossing paths with john ostrander's suicide squad once. Maybe in the janus directive story arc or before that. I thought back then he looked ridiculous but was cool and kinda engaging. Don't remermber what he was up to or how his story ended there, and never heard of him again until the ss2 teaser trailer. He's an interesting obscure character imho. Just, please dc, don't overuse him.

The only Charlton comics characters that succeeded in DC were Blue Beetle, Captain Atom and the Question as everyone else either flopped, became forgotten or they were bit players. Makes me wonder if DC acquiring Charlton was ever beneficial. It would be a interesting video to delve into the history of Charlton Comics and why/how DC acquired Charlton Comics.

DC had always bought characters from defunct comics company. They bought Captain Marvel and others from Fawcett when they decided to get out of the business,. Plastic Man, Freedom Fighters and other comics were bought from Quality.
Charlton was a different company, because everything was in house. Editorial, printing and distribution were under one roof, which saved a lot of money. They also were known for their licensed books, (TV shows, Comic Strips and Cowboy Actors) as well as other regular magazines and books. Super hero stuff was actually very minor.
Dick Giordano got his start at Charlton, as did many of famous comics creators, Roger Stern, John Byrne, Dennis O’Neil and Joe Staton. Giordano was the one who headed up the “revitalized” action hero line that included PeaceMaker, Ted Kord Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Nightshade and The Question.
When Charlton publications started to falter (they never updated their presses and it was always run on the cheap) DC President Paul Levitz, bought several of the prominent superhero characters as a favor to Dick Giordano.
The sad part of it: the direct market (comic book stores) were about to boom.
It worked out well for DC because Captain Atom, the Question were popular series and Blue Beetle, Nightshade, Sarge Steel became great fan favorite characters. They also got Watchmen out of the deal.

Great video, Sasha. You do delve into the history and details. A nice skate backwards to the Charlton Comics days of the 60's. Such a hit or miss company. For every Dr Graves or Blue Beetle, you had Judo Master or the Tyro Team. Peacemaker being one of the back burners, but for a reason, the character stayed memorable. When Clooney was in The Peacemaker movie, for an instant I had hoped that it would be based on that character. Nice to see that he is being put out once again, over 50 years later.

Maybe he sees himself as being a wealthy diplomat by day, when really he's just an unstable killer full-time. Maybe take it further and have him viewing his acts of violence as acts of diplomacy.
