  • Characters are created for a variety of reasons. In the case of Miss Martian she wasn't initially meant to be created at all. Her genesis came from necessity and a connection to Supergirl. These days the character is more well known for her roles in adaptations like Young Justice, Supergirl or The Fatal Five. However, this character started off in the 2000s as a Teen Titan. Find out how Miss Martian came to be and who she is named after here on Casually Comics!

seriously. young justice may be scattered at times, but the way it always keeps track of miss martian, dick, and aqualad on their journey from young inexperienced heroes to mentors and pillars of the superhero community makes it one of my favorite pieces of superhero media ever. it allows its characters to truly move forward instead of constantly bringing them back to square one and for a character like miss martian who really needs that level of character work it does so much to make her so human.

Oh I couldn’t agree more. I didn’t really know much about her at all before first watching Young Justice for the first time ever two weeks ago, but now that I have finished the first two series (I STILL need to read some of the comic book series and then get on with season 3 and 4), she‘s probably my top favourite character. Her abilities at such an incredible level that really warrant her existence ‘a lot sooner’, as well as her very interesting and surprisingly impactful back story, and her relationship with the other characters (not going to spoil who in particular for those who haven’t watched the series yet) really make her soo intriguing and shippable to me, and I think many others relate.
I just feel so ashamed that I hadn’t watched this story until now. 10+ years late to the party, but it looks like it is still going strong in fandom and notoriety and glad now to be a part of it.😁❤️

Young Justice was really the best, or at least most concise version of the character. I love the story arc of her getting too comfortable using her mental powers to the point she started having no moral qualms frying the brains of people who she felt deserved it. Sure, Psimon was an asshole and you could argue he deserved it (even though he eventually got better and arguably become even more dangerous), but I love when she uses her powers to rip apart Aqualad's brain when he was undercover trying to take down his father, Black Manta. It was an emotional way for Miss Martian to realize her powers could really hurt people, and I loved how her, Artemis, and Aqualad all ended up becoming close brain buddies in order to get out of that jam.

Each version of Miss Martian really became their own version, especially Young Justice's, who has a different dynamic since she's not a sole survivor of her race, appeared before YJ Kara, and is romantically tied to Superboy (Plus with use if time jumps, we see her grow to leadership role) Supergirl's is more comic based, but way more serious. DCAU's kinda... Makes no sense lore wise, but okay, new stuff happened. DC Superhero Girls is, um, I have no clue, not that serious I guess.

    • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 Год назад +1

The YJ version is by far my favorite, but of course it has the advantage of having ended. It was good, and will always be so because there's no danger of some future creative team pissing all over its legacy to feed their own vanity with ill-considered "re-imaginings" and careless retcons, nor can the show be ruined by editorial (or marketing department) mandates to participate in crossover events and daft reboots. The longer I live to compare the two, the more I'm struck by how much Western comics hurt themselves with their endless creative team rotations and corporate meddling with story direction. The manga business has many flaws of its own, but there's a lot to be said for (mostly) keeping one main creator in charge of a book for its lifetime and letting it end when they're done telling the story they wanted to tell.

This isnt exactly editorial interference, but Marvel's 2099 line dramatically collapsed in 1996. The line had a fairly tight creative team, but editor Joey Cavalieri was fired during 90s budget cuts. So Peter David and several others quit in protest. The 2099 books had to quickly get patched up by a last minute staff, and existing plans to bump the books to the year 2101 were nixed.

As far as comics go? The answer is always no 😂. Looking at Across the Spiderverse they could do some amazing existential crisis and/or imposter syndrome storylines with virtually every character. Pretty much all were made by accident or by copying another popular character. The ones that did stick on purpose have still be through a ton of changes. Like imagine a Jessica Drew Spiderwoman movie where she comes to gripes with her like 20 different origin stories all in the SAME continuity. Or Wally dealing with the fact he got shafted and all his accomplishments handed over to Barry because DC hates legacy characters (and can’t decide who actually are legacy characters considering how long Barry was dead and Wally the flash). Or just Peter getting traumatized over his entire life being constantly screwed over because of some sick game played by editorial and random writers just to sell more books.
… Actually they should really just make a full on horror animated adaptation of deadpool killing the marvel universe. Him realizing their entire reality is just a puppet show controlled by marvel to make money and entertain us (the audience) would make for a really surreal horror movie in theaters.

You make for a ravishing redhead and it truly sets the tone as you discuss Miss Martian. I have to admit I genuinely like Miss Martian primarily from the Young Justice animated series. Now that you bring it up, I can see how she would make for a Supergirl analog. I think that this was a wise editorial choice since the depiction of Supergirl at this time in comics has come to be one of the most definitive and endearing arcs of the character. I would love to see a story that allows for Supergirl, Miss Martian, Mary Marvel, Arrowette, Wondergirl, and Batgirl to join forces and play off of each other as the teenage girl counterpart of an established DC hero. They could represent the youthful idealism of their male counterpart, while still showing their own distinctive approach to problem solving and crimefighting that would allow them to step out of the shadows of the primary heroes and be a good jumping-on point for newer readers to be initiated into the larger DC Universe.

Never got to see much of Young Justice beyond season 1 but Me'gann was pretty good there and happy that she was created to give us a different dynamic. (oh and funny you mention the "lead-in" since I am a Linkara fan and with him a huge fan of the previous era (Techis Imperative/Titans...and sadly Graduation Day being a hated story for what it did to Omen and Donna Troy), it was neat finally seeing how Johns moved things forwards with stuff like Me'gann and the Superboy retcon)

I loved Ms. Martian in the post-no justice titans, it was my first exposure to her in the comics. I'm excited to read more about her, and i hope they do more with her in a leaderly position. It really suited her (sorry Dick)
This whole situation reminded me of how James Tynion IV created new characters for Batman in part due to the editorial restrictions in the characters. That's one of the reasons his "OCs" are so similar to pre-existing characters (the other is for thematic reasons), because he could do more with new characters that he couldn't do with Bruce, Harley, etc. And it led to characters I love, like Ghost-maker.
I agree that necessity is the mother of invention. A lot of cool stories come from writers working against restraints

I remember when a friend introduced me to Young Justice and I wasn't too up to date on comics lore (like the fact that Young Justice itself was team that had been around for over a decade when the first season debuted) and so I looked up who some of the members were. Weirdly enough, Miss Martian sounded familiar to me and to this day I don't know where I had heard of her first. My friend had me start watching Young Justice in 2014, so it is entirely possible I had heard about her through some kind of cultural osmosis, because it sure seems like she didn't have as much to do when Jones was writing her compared to what she's turned into thanks to YJ and Supergirl.
As far as how she was created, I guess when an exec tells you the Batman rule applies to a character you had your eye on, sometimes it can lead to a good thing? Well, eventually, after the shitshow that has been the DCEU, I am not prepared to hand anything to either Geoff Jones or DC execs

And those panels of him in the rocket he was piloting to save the day by sacrificing himself, as he says Titans Together before it blows. He made an impression.

Thanks for the dive on the character. I find Ms. M interesting in a character dynamic fashion. in YJ, one her own she'd be a little grating. Like how Teen Titans kinda infantalized Starfire. But her dynamic with Conner and Wally really brings a lot out of her. With Megan being initially innocent and Wally being NOT that. Conner flying off the handle easily and Megan being closest to a baby panda (something absolutely unkickable). I think that Triad allowed her to stand out more than the girls on Teen Titans.

The story arc Miss Martian has on S2 of Young Justice is imo one of the most fascinating in animated media. We have this character who was interesting in the first season but kind of unimpressive compared to the rest of the cast and suddenly, after a timeskip, she’s this ruthless powerful telepath that basically has a body count. They raise so many ethical questions with her characterization and her powerset, it’s genuinely one of the most interesting way to adapt a superhero I’ve seen. It also ended up making Superboy much more complex and interesting by proxy as he goes from being her strongest relationship on the show to the mouthpiece against this ethical question structured around her. YJ is kind of a mess of a show in how much it lacks focus but the themes tackled on the show are just so so interesting, especially for a children’s show that is often heavily sanitized by higher ups.
