One of my uncles would love something like this, I will check the written article to share it with him. Nice review as always James, video liked as always too
Wow, Ive been searching the internet trying to figure out how to get my notifications to show up on my phone and couldnt find anything with defender videos.. It is a ridiculous amount of steps to jump through just to set it up.. but thanks for have that part in your video. Really helped out a lot.
@@MakeUseOf -- I know they have them to the west and north of me, all the way to Alaska, but we don't have them here in Oklahoma. I know they're one of the smartest animals. Thanks!
What you can do if you want to view live on your desktop is to run another copy of windows in a virtual machine and then run an android emulator in that, or run an android box to your monitor with an x2 or more HDMI hub
@@MakeUseOf You can just download and install an Android emulator to your regular OS I just use VM's so I can separate the functionality of different OS
Not easy to answer unfortunately - assuming it's BNC+DC, not all cabling is the same, some is lower quality and you'll either get severe distortion or nothing at all. If it's Ethernet, much more likely to work (with PoE cameras that is, not analog). Honestly, I wouldn't recommend installing analog cameras (even 4k ones) at this point, the tech is just too antiquated. Run some new Ethernet cabling for best quality and features.
What camera system would work for a 3000sq foot home ? I want to use one camera to watch the front entry so I don't have to buy a video doorbell. Also, do you need a monitor at all? Can you just use the app?
The app on this isn't great, so I wouldn't suggest using it without a monitor. I love the Reolink systems because of the app on desktop & mobile. For a large house, I'd suggest maybe a separate Ethernet wiring circuit to for power and data to all the cams. You could go wireless, but then you'd be sucking the Wi-Fi signal away from other devices that need it. None of the CCTV systems will work well as a talkback door cam, so you'd need a Ring style camera for that.
I just purchased this and the fan runs continually and is loud. Comparable sound to a small microwave running all the time which is annoying. Since practically it needs to be by ethernet and monitor (we use our tv with HDMI), it is loud for a living room. Not sure why the fan runs all the time. It has plenty of space around it for air flow.
@@UFRooster I plug a laptop fan in one of the usb ports. The fan will take away some of the heat. Then I push the vent where the fan is against a partition board inside of the tv stand. That reduced the noise a ton.
Thanks for your review. The lack of field of view was the deal breaker for me. I'm however looking into that Reolink you mentioned.

This was very helpful and informative. Thank you.
Thank you for the great review video. Appreciate your time and the work involved in making it.

Glad I could help! Yeh, it's quite convoluted to put it mildly.
5:50 -- Are those magpies? Great review, James. I have no use for these (tiny apartment), but it's a nifty little system.
Yeah, loads of them come visit. Common in the UK I think?

Ingenious solution, but perhaps a little over engineered...

Do you find the fan on the system to be loud?

Interesting
What is the field of view in degrees for the reolink camera that you used as comparison to show how small the FOV for the defender was?
96 horizontal, 69 vertical
@@MakeUseOf Thank you sir. Do you recall which camera that is? Most of the newer reolink ip cameras I'm seeing are 87 horizontal and 44 vertical.

What is the wire with the covered push button that's attached to the camera for?
Physical reset, I believe.
Thank you!😊
Do you find that the fan on the dvr is loud ?
Hmm, not particularly, but it's out in the utility room rather than on my desk, and the house is full of noisy things anyway!¬

Yes extremely loud. I was going to install in our bedroom but there’s just no way because of the fan noise.
