@@TheEmptytube we saw them a couple of weeks ago and they did all of A & M plus a greatest hits compilation. Sadly the only Dazzle Ships song was The Romance of the Telescope.
The 80s was the most amazing era of music. OMD was and still is, one of the most amazing musical gifts to the industry. Great song, great memories of dancing, hanging out, loving and enjoying life.
50 and just an 80's girl. OMD, Pet Shop Boys, Human League, Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants - such memories. Totally talented and still play to audiences 30 yrs later.
coming from a socially awkward person who loves dance music but isn't confident or good at dancing. i feel happy and empowered when i see andy's cute dorky manoeuvres 0:49 :' )
I think it is fair to say that I could probably type 1000 words, and never begin to do justice to how awesome this song is. Out of all the hundreds of absolutely stellar songs by various artists in the early 80s in the new wave genre, this song is literally in the top 5 of mine. I'd be hard pressed to put it any lower, even when considering every 'awesome' new wave band that I loved, 'Alphaville', 'Fancy', 'The Twins', 'Nash the Slash', 'Blancmange', 'Devo', 'Psychadelic Furs' the list goes on. This song and 'Genetic Engineer' are stupendous...
Saw them in chicago 85 smart bar. small crowd made the show even better. Nobody in the US knew who they were. It was the same with the Ramones and U2 5 years before. These bands were playing to 500 people max.Good time to see them
Great tune from 1983 of course. Remember the video too and had the words to it in smash hits as well too. One of their best for sure. Odd how this and the other single from dazzle ships they do not seem to play live compared to their other hits. I wonder why not though too.
I got the 12 inch single for Christmas, 1983, Telegraph and Genetic Engineering (Canadian release). It doesn't get much more "80s" than this! Bloody brilliant...
The 45 in the USA on Epic Records got released with This Is Helena on the B side. The UK Single on Virgin (both the 45 and 12" single) have 66 And Fading on the b-side.
This is such a timeless classic. It puts a big smile on my face. I remember when this was new and on the radio. I love it so! I can't get enough! I used to have this on cassette tape and listened on my Sony walkman or boom box. I remember I once got a telegraph back in the 80's. This is a Great video too. Thank you.
When it was released, Dazzle Ships was a commercial failure and almost killed OMD’s career. But in recent years, reviews for it have become more positive with many realising it was an underrated masterpiece and an album ahead of its time.

It was criminal in the USA that the album Dazzle Ships and the single Telegraph didn't get promoted by Epic Records in 1983. Virgin didn't have any offices in the USA at the time, and a number of their artists needed to get licensed by Virgin on other labels. Epic pushed Culture Club way more than Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark. The Human League, on the other hand, had a deal with A&M Records, and made a splash in the USA. OMD left Epic and signed with A&M on their follow up album Junk Culture. OMD did better in the US under the A&M label than Epic. There was another Virgin Records band that left Epic Records for another label: China Crisis. China Crisis signed onto Warner Brothers in 1983. OMD is one of the more memorable bands signed onto Virgin Records in the early 80s.
kraftwerk also used the same sound effect a bit earlier than this on radioactivity. it was a pleasant experience to be able to hear the morse code sfx being used once again on a magical song such as this! : D
I saw them twice, once at Nostalgie Beach Rock in Middelkerke, Belgium. Their songs really give me mesmerizing dreams about England... Luv' this awesome band... May they keep performing for a really long time
OMD - as one of the premier English New Wave bands really didn't get their due. To this day, from when I first heard them in the 80's is one of my favorite bands
i'm 19 going on 20 and i love OMD. one of the best bands i ever heard. much more better than the modern crap on the radio today. i hope OMD carry's on for another 10 years or more. real shame there's not many young people into these guy's, rarely hear them on radio stations. gud ol youtube to let let me hear their brillient tunes and watch their fantastic music videos
If memory serves me well, the redhead is Lorraine Whitmarsh, who was also a backing singer for Visage, as well as a Hot Gossip dancer. She can be seen in the video for 'Visage' by Visage...of course ;)
