If time travel existed, I’d travel to the first time I heard OMD. I was floored by their music!!!! I live in Montreal and this music didn’t normally play on the radio. You had to find the special radio shows or clubs that played alternative music. I miss those days!
@@yogamukta4669 Come on, don't be silly. We've HAD it all. A tiny percentage of apparent hopefuls do not a dead music scene make. The 80s is long gone. There can never be another Kim Wilde, OMD, China Crisis, Sandra, Talk Talk, T'Pau, Sheena Easton, Cock Robin, Shakespears Sister, Kate Bush, Sparks, ABBA, Alphaville, Voice Of The Beehive, Berlin, Crowded House, Big Country, Camouflage etc. All anyone can do today is not suck so badly when they ape the only greatest decade of music and talent combined that there ever was.
This was my dads favorite song from these guys. I'm about his age when this song first came out and I still remember the nights i would dance to this song with my sister and my dad would drink and join us. Miss him everyday
So I was in my local pub a couple of days ago, and the juke box in there plays random tunes when no one puts money in - and this came on. I'd totally forgotten about this OMD tune - so here I am. Absolutely timeless beauty.... 👍❤️
Beautiful 80s music is so timeless and so beautiful. Best era in music, nostalgic memories and beautiful times that we enjoyed and still do. This music lives on forever because it is incredible and great to enjoy, dance to, listen to and have fun, then and now.
I think a lot of the pop-rock of the later 80s has aged badly, but then I thought it was not that good at the time, too plasticky. The genuine synth-pop/electronica (basically IMV before the DX7 meant everything was layered with its cheese) stands up very well, because although it is "of its time" it is also classic and genuinely good, like classical music or film noir. Most of the synth-pop artistes lost their way in the DX7 era, like Numan wandering off into electro-funk and whatever the Human League thought they were doing with Jam And Lewis. Depeche Mode are an exception.
They played in Oakland last night, still one of the best bands out there. Amazing vocals and lush lovely keys. Going strong over 40 years! Go see them!
I was 11 years young when this was in the charts. At the time I was into Tight Fit, Bowie and The Police. I never truly appreciated OMD back then. I'm 53 Yrs young now and heard this yesterday for the first time since 1980, I've been playing it on repeat the last 2 days, including while out and about shopping, it's stuck in my head forever now, right where it should be.
I cannot believe it was 1979 when I bought their first album with this track on it. 17 years old......and I am 53 now. Some great music out there, then..........
That was the second album with "Souvenir" on it......the first was a white cover with an image in black and orange, something like a pill card. This had "The Messerchmitt Twins" on. :)
@@L33JONNO The original version was on their self-titled Feb 1980 release, though this one is the May 1980 single version produced by Mike Howlett. It was their first UK chart single, reaching #13.
Seventeen Top 40 singles over 16 years, highest chart position of 3 (twice - Souvenir and Sailing on the Seven Seas), still touring to this day....absolute legends!!
What absolutely fantastic years the 80’s were. Never to be repeated and never to be equalled. Just so glad I had the chance to experience to whole decade.
OMD's genius is turning cold sterile heartless electronic music into something lush, ethereal, organic and expressive and they did this better than any other band I could think of in their time.
I got to see them at The Old Waldorf in San Francisco (North Beach) in 1982, which was especially nice because it was a small venue, and I had a table next to the stage. It was a very intimate concert and one of my favorites.
I can't begin to imagine the sheer magic of the UK '80s chart ever being equalled... A truly fantastic time for those of us who were in our teens & lucky enough to be on the pub/club scene. Precious memories of my amazing youth playing back to me through RUclips 4-decades later. Who could've ever imagined that back then.
Absolutely spot on! Just started my first job when this particular song was charting. Fabulous times which will never be surpassed both personally and musically!
I can clearly remember playing this on my parents record player in the front room of my parents house in 1980 when i was 17 , cant believe that was 42 years ago , where has the time gone.
i never really rated OMD...then years later i heard this song. Changed my entire opinion. This is pure genius and should be in the electronic vault of classics.
Total Classss!! I wasn't into OMD in the 80s but listening to Messages, is like a teleport through time and a fast track back to when life was just a dream..
I was priviledged to have seen these at least 10-15 times in the 80s.........................And yes, they were even better live!!!! Royal Court, Liverpool at 15!! Takes me back!
This is without question the greatest thing in all creation. So poignant, so reflective. Loved it when it first came out; still love it now. This is what will be played at my funeral.
This song is wonderful, liked so much since I was a child, far in the beggining of 80s. The moment about 0:18 when the sound "jumps" to a more organic, or powerful, composition of sounds (sorry for my english) is GREAT. For me It is like a kind of techno high.
Out there that is what got me in right from the intro to the end the bass the beat and of course the retrosynth v i b e how I remember and don't want to forget and for that I thank you
I was 4 years old in 1980 still remember this song, my older brother was 11 and introduced me to the superb world of music. Electro synth has always been close to my heart
My daughter & I got to see them in Nov '21 ... Finally, after four decades I got to see my favourite '80s' band. I was so incredibly lucky to turn 17 in 1980 ... What an honour & a pleasure to have been on the Brit pub/club scene from start to finish of the Epic Eighties ... Most of the '80s' music was to die for: though some such as AGADOO made me want to die 🤣😂🤣
I've loved this band for 30 years. Messages is probably my favourite song of theirs but it's so hard to chose a 'favourite' when they've produced so many memorable tunes.
Wow! I'm in my 60's and it's taken me since the 80's to determine what it was about the lead singers voice. Yearning! He has a vocal tone that projects a constant yearning. Genius!
A great piece of 80's song writing with an interesting style... it's cold yet emotional, simplistic and complicated, hopeful and kind of sad all at the same time.
The way that Mal has that fixed, steely gaze as he comes striding over to his kit with his sticks, you know without a doubt that he's metronomic man-machine on a mission, and *ish is about to get very real. Let the funky dancing commence! Like so many others have commented, I'm grateful to have been born an as an Xer, and to have been old enough to realize then that it was a very special time - yet still young enough to somewhat naïvely hope it could last forever. In a way, it has. :-)
When I first saw this video in the '80s, I never questioned the instruments being unhooked to a power source...I still don't question it now~ lol! Love my '80s~~~~~
Just saw them in concert Tuesday! Absolutely one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! I love them so much and so happy to have finally seen them live! ♥️
It was always unique and I remember being in Cumbria camping and I brought a little transistor radio. I was 14 and it has always reminded me of my adolescents. Good honest times.
One of the best bands to come out of the UK in the electronic period/era 1980s. I am biased as I was enthalled with the synth sound, couldn`t get enough of it! My only wish was to have danced opposite Andy in a club. I loved New Wave and went to many concerts, OMD being one of them. Hope to see OMD at the Leeds Festival June 2021. I hope Andy does his iconic style of dancing (Electricity) which was of its time in the 80s. Shame Malcolm won`t be there, great drummer! Stuart Kershaw is a good drummer too. Great dance music ... derelict warehouse, sign of the times, but AM dressed as a Yuppie ... hope they made lots of money and enjoying it 2nd time round. Bloody brilliant amazing 80s music love it 😍😊💜❤️💙 New Zealand
Hard to believe this piece of music is over 40 years old! Holds up well!
So modern; which after the terrible pre punk 70s made it like one was on another planet
Malcolm Holmes was an integral part of the OMD sound
Anything in the 80s that truly matters holds up well. What holds up well before it, apart from the few, and certainly very little beyond it.
So am I lol so people like us appreciate it
God it was good back then, so many brilliant bands, so many styles and genres, just incredible

How are this Band not in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME IS BEYOND ME. PIONEERS OF SYNTH
Because Andy McCluskey founded Atomic Kitten, which was a crime against humanity. Not even this song makes up for that.
