Great vid! But putting Past Lives at (vid spoilers......) number 9 is criminal! Talk about a moving film, it really got under my skin in a good way. And maybe it is a matter of different circles, but I've seen a lot of people sincerely calling it the best movie of 2023. I would not go that far (nothing will top Beau Is Afraid for me but I know that is NOT most people's cup of tea, but damn do I love my fucked up weirdo shit in movies lol) but I'd imagine Past Lives will stick in the mind of its viewers for a long long time.

  • @curthagens

I love Past Lives, I thought it was beautiful and it really resonated with me, by far my favorite BP nom.
Totally understand that it’s not for you, but I was admittedly a little surprised when you said you’d only recommend it to a select few. Basically everyone I’ve talked to about this movie loved it (no, not just cinephiles, I wouldn’t even call myself one), in fact you’re actually the first person I’m aware of that doesn’t. So, I love you Cody, hate to go against ya man, but for anyone who sees this comment, hasn’t seen Past Lives yet, and was turned off to watching it because of this video or anything else, I really don’t think you should be dissuaded. I’d highly recommend still checking it out.

The Sound Mix and Soundtrack volume was so problematic and ultimately detracted from an almost perfect movie in Oppenheimer. I'm also not on the Cillian Murphy hype train personally, he does very well, but I would argue that it's only really the last hour that he becomes "Oscar Worthy."

Great channel.🤓 Please help name a horror movie: A ghost hunter TV crew goes to an old hospital. They are being killed off by an internet cult. The cult wears masks and puts cameras on all their weapons. The TV crew was trying to scare a crew member, not the episode star. The episode star was a patient at the hospital when it was open. The TV crew goes to a morgue, and the security guard there has a fake gun. which scares everybody. It was the movie's first sense. I can't remember the name of this movie. It's been driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated. 😎

I just watched The Iron Claw a few hours ago and been going down a rabbit hole of how it didn't get nominated for anything. You were right about saying something along the lines of "if this movie doesn't get nominated for anything, it'll be one of the biggest snubs since I started doing RUclips.". Hopefully this year it'll get nominated for an award, but I'm very doubtful about that.

There might've been 10 best picture nominees for the last 15 or so years, but usually you can look at the list of nominees and narrow it down to 5 movies that are the actual contenders. The 5 that would've likely been nominated even if there were still just 5 nominees. Then you've got movies 6 through 10, which have virtually no chance, and aren't officially honorable mentions, but really might as well be. Just saw the Holdovers for the first time today, and it feels to me like a quintessential 6 through 10 best picture nominee. That's not simply a statement about its merit, it's mostly a statement about its style. It's got the honor of being a 6 through 10 best picture nominee, and it almost feels like it was made with that honor in mind, rather than best picture itself in mind
Though of course, all I'm saying is to be taken with a grain of salt, because I admit that I'm being vague and not really explaining my feelings.

I just don't get anatomy of a fall. I thought it was slow and boring. The subject matter (even after reading what the message being conveyed was) just did not resonate with me the way the film intends it to I think. It lost my attention a few times after that first hour as Cody also stated. The first hour was decent, but pacing, dialogue and story really really lacked into the latter half of the film. The acting is fine I thought. Nothing that blew me away. But mostly all served its purpose for what it was.
I just don't get the hype and praise for it. It's a fine film at a technical film makers perspective. But rather dull and uninteresting. I haven't seen all the films nominated or even the so called "snubs" of this year. But I can't imagine that I would be including this film in my own list of top ten nominees for best picture.

    2 cents on Scorsese:
    1. I really hope you're right about Killers of the Flower Moon, because it's easily the worst Scorsese film I've seen. It has a promising premise and it's superficially well-made, but the execution of the story makes for weak and unbelievable drama. First of all, the romance between DiCaprio and Gladstone is neither engaging nor convincing; I honestly have no idea what she saw in him in the first place, especially since she had a pretty good idea early on that he was mostly just interested in her family's money. In fact, the whole setup for their romance feels so rushed. (What is it, like, 10 minutes of screentime between their first meeting and their wedding? In a movie with such a lengthy runtime, there's something wrong with that). Compare their courtship with that of Henry Hill and Karen Friedman, in which she clearly told us (via some of Scorsese's trademark voiceovers) how she felt and what attracted her to Henry, thus making it completely understandable why she married him and stuck with him during all the hell he put her through. KOTFM doesn't justify Gladstone's feelings for DiCaprio very well at all, and I can't understand why it takes her so long to even suspect who was behind the deaths of her family members. (Again, she knew FROM THE BEGINNING that Ernest was interested in her headrights!) And finally, your one "mixed" aspect for the film became an outright negative for me once the FBI got involved; the fact that we know everything they're trying to find out just makes most of the third act redundant and thus kills the momentum of the narrative. So, yeah, I'm not rooting for KOTFM to win Best Picture, and I hope to hell it isn't the swan song on which the great Martin Scorsese goes out.
    2. I think The Departed is a good movie, but it's also a slick, glib cop thriller. It has a good deal of depth for a movie of that type, but it can't ever stand on the shelf next to such profound masterpieces as Taxi Driver or Goodfellas. And there's nothing wrong with that, except that it's the one Scorsese film to win Best Picture. I greatly prefer it to Killers of the Flower Moon, but it definitely isn't the Scorsese film that most deserved an Oscar.

    • @paulinegallagher7821
      @paulinegallagher7821 6 месяцев назад +1

The Departed is a fast moving, expertly made, shoot em up cop thriller with one twist after another after another. It did not deserve to win best picture because it is just another twisty: 'who's really the bad guy?' cop movie. LA Confidential didn't win, brilliant as it was, for the same reason. Tokenism to a director as great as Scorsese is just plain insulting.

Haven’t seen American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, or Past Lives yet but here is my ranking of the rest.
Maestro (Fine but not very interesting and I found the portrayal of Leonard Bernstein made him come off as a bit of a selfish and self-obsessed ass, Carrey Mulligan was great though and the best part of the film 7/10)
The Zone of Interest (Haunting and really well done, I was expecting it to be a harder watch than it was. Overall it was an interesting perspective but I honestly didn’t know how exactly to feel about it after it was over 7.5/10)
The Holdovers (A really fun and heartfelt film with outstanding performances by all 3 of the leads, it was just a wholesome good time that had laughs and a lot of heart 8/10)
Barbie (Was not planning to see it in theatres even though I love Greta Gerwig’s other films, I just didn’t think it would be for me. My aunt was in town visiting and wanted to see it as she doesn’t have any local theatres so we went together. I ended up really enjoying this movie and Ryan Gosling cracked me up throughout, Margot Robbie is perfect in the role and my two other favs were Michael Cera and America Ferrara who both had stand out moments in the film 8.5/10)
Oppenheimer (3hrs of perfect editing and dialogue that keeps you locked in throughout. Saw it in IMAX and liked it, and saw it a second time later at a home theatre and loved it and caught some things I missed the first time round. The performances are phenomenal, it goes without saying, and Cillian and Downey Jr. deserve their Oscars, assuming they win, It is another masterpiece by Nolan and it just recently made my top 10 of the year after the second watch 9/10)
Poor Things (This film blew me away and I loved every second of it. Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and Emma Stone were sublime, and everyone around them did a top notch job! The vividness of the colours, the zaneiness of the world and the humor and heart of this film match the bizarre nature of the subject matter. Upon reflection the premise of what Bella actually is, it is disturbing and it’s heard to ignore the fact that she is essentially a child in an adults body doing very adult things. It didn’t bother me when I watched initially and I will see how I feel upon rewatch but right now it’s a 10/10 for me)
Killers of the Flower Moon (Dark, perfectly acted and one of the most meaningful movies I watched this year. This is my top movie of the year and Lilly Gladstone, Dicaprio and Robert Dinero put in all-time performances in this film. “The love of money is the root of all evil,” is the thesis of the film and it executes that perfectly and shows the sickening reality of human greed and the absolute disregard for the lives of the Osage People at this moment in history. It was a part of history I was not aware of and this is my personal favourite Scorcese Movie that I’ve seen and it’s incredible him making films in his 80’s that are arguably his best work 10/10)
If I could have placed a couple more films on this list it would be Beau is Afraid and Godzilla Minus One, completely different films but both are 10/10 for me!

The reason for Willem Dafoe’s bubbles in Poor Things was that his father (who was also a mad scientist) surgically removed some of his glands and prevented him from filtering his gastric acids. So he build a device that helped him release the gas orally.
    Hope that helped.

I work under an imprint of the WGA - I try to write observational cinema. THE ZONE OF INTEREST is the greatest film of 2010's. Major theme is repetition. Notice we’ll be in a room, then followed by the almost constant opening of doors, we are back in that same room just a moment later. Yet, it’s changed. Objects have been moved around and the wall paint has altered jusssst a bit - also how BIG is that damn house? The inside aint matchin the outside
Notice the amount of set picnic tables throughout the back yard during the garden tour. It makes no literal sense. But, it shows us multiple picnics in multiple places with the horror still in the background. Also
Don’t get me started on the children. Their ages are constantly fluctuating. Younger, older, younger, older. There’s even an actor change for the oldest son. Showing that complacency is anyone, anytime and everywhere.
A very close companion to Kubrick at his most contemplative

    4. Poor Things
    5. The Holdovers
    6. The Zone of Interest

Only one Martin Scorsese film has ever won Best Picture (The Departed), and even then I would say it’s hard to argue it didn’t deserve it even if it was a long overdue way to honor him. He doesn’t get pity awards.

Although I haven’t seen one of them yet, I do believe that The Iron Claw and Spider-Verse (I’ve see spider-verse) should have gotten more noms. Unfortunately, Iron Claw I think came out too late that the voters unfortunately missed it, but at least give it one nom. Doesn’t have to be best pic but maybe supporting actor for Zac. As for Spider-Verse, it unfortunately is animated. Animation doesn’t get the recognition it needs at the Oscars. It’s been 2 years since an animated movie has been nominated for anything other than animated feature, which is very sad since there have been an awful lot of fantastic animated movies like spider verse. It’s a huge shame. Love the video btw!
