For me it is when he says "and when I looked down there was no ground beneath my feet" (or something like that), it feels so relatable the fact that you start something with a lot of energy, passion and dreams and you just keep pushing until at some point you can't stop no matter if that thing is destroying you, and the reasons of why you started it, while potentially still there, they don't matter anymore, it is about keep going because now others also depend on you, he actually eludes to this when he says "and the ego that started it all will never have recognition" (something along those lines)

@@prefon13 I am in no way downplaying the role writers can have being on-set but Tony Gilroy and Diego Luna has said the shooting script and the final product of Season 1 were the closest of any project they have worked on. Tony, and Lucasfilm, knew the strike was coming and prepared in advance with the directors/producers. The entire industry went thru hell in 2007/2008 because nobody knew what to expect but all the producers/directors involved were in Hollywood at that point and know the cost of not being prepared then. Hopefully the strike will end before shooting wraps in August but even if it does not, it's possible they can do re-shoots to fill in gaps. The show is stacked full of talented people top to bottom. I have faith and hope they will figure it out.

Interesting. Because this is the Star Wars i've wanted since the early 80s. It's the ruthless empire feared when it first was shown in the 70s. I even repeatedly said to a friend "what i really want is Star Wars but with the tone of Jason Bourne." I mean i said it over and over for years. To the point where my friend ignored it. I watched the whole thing loved it. And then found out the creator Tony Gilroy was a writer on the Bourne Trilogy. Well no wonder i loved it. It's literally what i've been asking for for a decade.

"I burned my life to make a sunrise I know I'll never see" wasn't just applying to Luthen. Kino knew he was doomed from the moment he found out no one was going to be released. But he not only participated in the escape, he led it. In a series whose lead character is fated to die in the not-too-distant future, I love that the focus of the series has been on more characters who have helped build the Rebellion even though they will never see the liberation they are fighting for.

That Kino couldn't swim was super thematic. The way Luthen say that he's sacreficing everything and that he is creating a sunrise that he'll never see is exactly what Kino does in that he helps people escape even if he cannot, because he can't swim. I mean, the inmates litrally uses the empires tools agianst them when escapeing, just like Luthen says he does.

Also, Holden, figured you'd like this tidbit. Andy Serkis has said that his characters arc is about a crisis of faith. He BELIEVES there is an "afterlife" waiting for him out of prison if he does good, but when he knows he isn't getting out and loses that faith he changes.

I don't think that Skarsgard's character is going to change in any way as we have seen it so far. Him making these decisions like sacrificing people, is truly necessary for the cause. In previous SW-installments we've known the rebels as the simply pure & good ones on a 2-dimensional axis. This series (and Rogue one has already started it) has brought in some grown-up reinterpretations of the rebels, which I for one at least absolutely welcome. Its just more real and beleivable.

We experience it from Cassian's viewpoint almost. Imagine in that moment he gets pushed off into the water and that is the last time he see's someone that was so impactful for him. Not knowing what his fate actually was. And that's the reality of rebellion and war. People are there one minute and gone the next.

Enjoyed the video, one point I had to address in your post-commentary: you mentioned Skarsgard's character (Luthen) as not being a "good rebel." While I understand the idea of seeing Leia and Mon Mothma and others as "righteous," one of the purposes of this show is to highlight an uncomfortable truth, which is, when running any rebellion, even one against something as evil as the Empire in Star Wars, you are inevitably going to have to make choices that are morally reprehensible for the sake of the greater cause.
It's nice to think that you can violently resist authoritarianism whilst being noble and morally upright, but that's unfortunately just not how reality tends to work. Of course, this doesn't make Luthen a good man, not at all. Rather, in the context of this story, it makes him a necessary man. He is the kind of person willing to make the choices that will bring about a better future for the majority, through actions that condemns his own soul, so that others don't have to share in his damnation.
The original movies show the Rebellion as altruistic to a fault, but it's important to keep in mind, you can't save everyone. Faced with the choice between sacrificing your own to move your cause against tyranny forward, or trying to preserve everyone even if it means sabotaging your movement, which one is truly the best option?

America was founded on a riot, so clearly there is a level of riot every American is comfortable with. Those who had a problem with the riots that led to American Independence were loyal to the status quo, the English crown. I love that this episode makes you ask yourself the question: Would I risk a riot, or would I have too much to lose?

Andy Serkis’ leadership and inability to see the entire escape to its uncertain end is being juxtaposed with Stellan Skarsgård’s problem of leading a rebellion that he may or may not survive to see. The Prison (and its flaws) can be seen as a microcosm of the Empire. Terrific writing. Great reaction.

2 major speeches by top tier actors, this is why you spend the money. "I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemies." Luthien sees only one way out for the rebellion, he doesn't count on farm boys with superpowers to save the day, and he shouldn't, in the end we have to beat back fascism in our own limited ways, and hope the numbers are large enough to do it. There are 2 great speeches coming up that address that, the need for unity in numbers. This show delivers more food for thought in a season than most do their entire run, and it comes at a great time. We need Focus.

Two absolute top tier banger monologues in ALL of Star Wars, within a single episode. This show is SO much better than it had any right to be. When this first got announced I remember almost doing a spit take and going “really? Are you kidding me? The backstory on the guy from Rogue One? WHY.”

I know we can have it both ways, this AND The Mandalorian but this show makes it incredibly hard to go back and watch Season 3 of Mando, BoBF, and the Obi-Wan show (which hurts the most if I'm being honest). I'm cautiously optimistic the Ahsoka show can get back to the highs of the first two seasons of Mando if Filoni is at his peak.

As a kid, growing up waiting for the original trilogy to come out. By the time the prequals came out I wanted something a bit more mature. I was at the opening night a little disappointed.
Not so much now, I get it. The mainline films are for children (and big kids. 😊)
But this is what I was hoping to see in '99. Star War for grown ups.
My love of this universe has never died, but I sure as hell didn't expect it to get renewed by this show.

I’ve seen some reactions to episode 10. The simping for the Empire because “some of these guys could be murderers” is hilarious. The obvious narrative in this series is that the Rebellion is growing, in large part by the Empire’s modus operandi, and dissidents (or, really, anyone around) are being thrown into slave labor camps to build the Death Star (the main tool used to terrify the galaxy along with solidifying their control throughout). Are people not getting that the Emperor and Empire are bad?🤔

If a couple of years ago you had told me that Andy Serkis, the master of motion capture acting would have two roles in this franchise, one in major motion picture events playing a giant imposing lord of evil who is pulling the strings behind a vast power, and the other as a secondary character in a streaming series for minimal episodes playing a prisoner with no real discerning background traits…. And that the latter role would be the one that becomes one of the most memorable performances the franchise ever saw… I would have said you were insane… yet here we are

One thing to keep in mind: Violent criminals were sent to other prisons. The ones that went here first were all for minor infractions that had extended sentences, and a Lot of them were inocent from even that, as Andor was.
The Empire couldnt send prisioners that wouldnt comply and obey the program to one of their most important forced labor camps.

The writing in this episode is only eclipsed by the acting by Serkis and Skarsgard. It is so. good. Those two speeches highlight the best and worst of the rebellion, and its the same for both of them. Both men who sacrifice themselves for the greater good knowing they’re not going to reap the rewards of their efforts. I love the fact that both men are fully aware that they’re doomed in their own ways but keep pushing on regardless, but there they separate and show the best and worst of the rebellion. Luthen says it himself, adopting the tactics of his enemy to defeat them he’s forced to be the very thing he’s fighting against and sacrificing others for his cause, but Kino sacrifices himself to help those he cares about. Kino sacrifices his life or his freedom, but Luthen sacrifices his soul. Ultimately, though, the rebellion needs both types of men to succeed, so they’re two sides of the same coin.
