I love that though, just the way he pauses to deliver the line the audience knows he’s alluding to a past memory but that’s all we’ll know about it. Fantastic writing and acting. incredible performance.

He is the true and tragic hero of the Star Wars saga. Without him there is no rebellion, no victory against evil, yet he has resigned himself to be forgotten or at best, remembered as a monster
What this show really shows perfectly, more than the original movies, is what every day people sacrificed for the rebellion, for democracy, for freedom. In the movies it was more heroic, here you see the real cost.
Shout out to Robert Emms too for being the other half of this. That’s a vastly underrated role. And I love how Luthan keeps acknowledging that Lonnie is a hero and how awful it is that his tactics have to be so awful. He hates that. He’s not mad at Lonnie, he’s so furious at the Empire for turning him into an inhuman person.
Andor IMHO is not only the best SW content but top 10 TV series all time... Acting Writing Production.... The second season will no doubt be awesomeness 🔥🔥

Mando and Ahsoka and the films get all the love but holy shit THIS is the the best Star Wars ever created. No force. No lightsabers. Just pure story and pure writing.
ANDOR is a great show.. it's quite dark in tone and there are no lightsabers, but that's great to see! There is much more to the Star Wars universe than just Jedi and Sith. Bring on another season!
I dont believe we've ever gotten a monologue quite like this one in all of Star Wars. Last time they gave a monologue like this to a good actor, it was Alec Guinness, but that was all expository dialogue to Luke. It's good that they cast ACTORS and they give them moments to shine as actors when they give characters more dimensions and compelling dialogue like this! Also the one Ewan McGregor gives at the end of Obi-Wan to little Leai, alluding to her parents, I love that one as well!
In acting, we call these monologues. And this is a damn good one. Encapsulates his heroic, yet ruthless and sad character quite well. Heroes are those who sacrifice for the greater good of all, but sometimes they're the ones brave enough to get their hands really dirty and do some nasty stuff in order to gain that greater good.

I used to play a Dungeons and Dragons campaign with a character who’d been a literal teenager and started off as a joke, but quickly evolved into something much more. To make a long story short, over the course of the campaign we were playing (which sadly got canceled before it completed) my character went on an increasing spiral of dark heroics: While many (not all) of the party flaunted themselves as “Heroes” for everyone to see, It was actually my character who was doing all the background dirty work to make things as successful as possible. While party members were constantly arguing and wanted to kill every hostile thing encounter, I was Making Blackhanded deals to recruit allies for the war effort. They wanted to just steal some intelligence and leave while making a mockery of themselves, I was Turning Rebellious elements of the enemy army to switching sides. They just wanted to grab a magic artifact from the hands of 3 Independent squabbling enemies of Devils, Vampires and Drow Inspired by Warhammer’s Dark Elves, but I instead managed to get them to cooperate against a common enemy without screwing anyone over. I was doing this and so much more, Dirtying my hands to such an extent that he was considered a loose cannon and not a true “Hero” to the others. It got to the point that eventually, most of the party barring a few confronted my character about all of this. And in a very similar monologue to this, I called ALL OF THEM out on their hypocrisy and my efforts. They called themselves heroes, but I was the one doing the REAL work behind the scenes and got everything as far as I did. I took full acceptance of all my actions and completely honesty with myself and everything. I knew that I wasn’t going to be publicly praised personally and Accepted myself as a monster, but my efforts were completely for the greater good of all. There’s a lot more to this story, but that’s the gist of it. More or less. 😅 I can go into further details if you like, but I completely understand Luther’s mindset entirely. And even at one point in that campaign, Me and the DM had a private conversation and admitted that out of the majority of the party, I was the Actual overlooked hero in the group. It was quite an interesting time! 😁 (Still good friends with the other members of the group, so no love lost.)
Sometimes you have to be a little bit of a monster to achieve your idealistic goal. Would you betray comrades or commit a war crime if it means your side wins the war? Would you condemn your soul to Hell if it means paradise for your loved ones? This man would.
I’ve honestly done the same in a Dnd game at one time. I was Playing a character who ended up making so many completely black decisions in order to achieve the greater good for all. He got confronted for his choices, but I called out everyone else on their hypocrisy for not doing the work that I was actually doing to succeed in the campaign. Gave an eerily similar monologue to this one here, and although it was sadly cancelled before completion, the DM admitted to me that not only was my Character the actual hero of the party, But all his work and efforts to win the War at the cost of his literal soul? He would’ve succeeded. I miss that campaign, but DAMN do I understand that mindset entirely.

After watching both this and Shogun, I've realized something. Luthen Rael is what Yoshi Toranaga would be if circumstances allowed to be completely honest with even just one person.
Well the thing is the studio executives and heads were least invested and barely had contact with this project and that's exactly why it is good both Andor and Rogue One. The less they are involved the better the material is the better the story is the closer we get to the true star wars!
Honestly I love the Star Wars universe, I really do and all its other media and stories have really opened up the universe. Saying that, I’m done with Jedi sith stories, done. Andor is the greatest thing Star Wars has done, a fleshed out universe showing us the real day to day life under an imperialistic regime, and there fight against it, I need more stories like this I couldn’t care less for force users anymore

But there are still BILLIONS who are mediocre morons (hint: NONE of the talented people are billionaires). 2) There are near infinite ways to fuck shit up...but only a tiny handful (sometimes only a single way) to get something right. So when nearly everyone is just rolling fuckin dice on just about everything, the outcome is almost always going to be bad.

Running an entertainment franchise is like running a shoe store. Everybody is a potential customer but not everyone wants the same thing. With Star Wars, some people want lore and some people want hard hitting stories. Disney is really trying to get both types of customers but the aren't threading the needle enough on the Lore side for the Stories people, and even the utter focus on lore at the absolute expense of a good story is killing their audience. Andor did not do well at first (dunno now) because the Lore audience did not care.
@@skiena I always thought Pixar solved that. They can make a movie for children that also carries adult themes, making them rewatchable for decades by the same children who've now grown up. And with the Star Wars shows we've seen so far, with the clear exception of Andor, I believe there simply is too much meddling from the top, too little trust in the artists and too little effort put into the stories, because they are busy moving on to the next show as soon as the first is done, instead of trying to make something special, memorable and long lasting.
